easily the most exciting baseball player to ever play the game. mad the game exciting for all races and genders along with those who didn't even care about baseball. stats can not do justice showing the impact he had on the game. more hall of fame players were influenced by mays than any other player in the game his energy was that infectious
Willie came up right after Jackie Robinson broke the color line in baseball. I think Robinson came up in 1947 and Mays in 1951. Mays was the first ballplayer that I ever idolized. I lived in Pelham Manor, N.Y during Mays' early years and the kids I grew up with in my neighborhood, were split among Giant, Yankee and Dodger loyalities. The arguement as to who was the better player, Duke Snider, Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays would rage all summers in the 1950's. Mays won hands down, even during Mickey's triple crowd year and the home run chase in 1961. Mays was the first black player who white kids could easily idolize. During that time, it was a big deal for young white kids to idolize a black athlete. But Willie won our hearts, it was his transcendent talent that allowed many of young kids living up north to want to be that kind of incredible ball player. We would wonder why people had something against blacks. Later in the 1960's when we were teens, friends and I worked to raise money for Civil Rights causes, helping out at car washes, bake sales, cutting lawns and other small time fund raisers at that time. Mays had an amazing impact on my life, and I'm a better person for watching him play ball at the highest level.
while one could make a case that he is the greatest of all time, its conclusive that he was the best of his own era. and his era included aaron, mantle, williams ,musial, clemente, banks, berra, koufax ,spahn, campanella, etc. he's also rather surely better than anyone who has come after him, and most likely the greatest centerfielder of them all. not only was he the greatest 5-tool player, but he's the man who caused the term 5-tool player to exist. while mantle was even better from 56-61, and aaron was the player of the 60s, mays was spectacular every year from 54-65. while he is revered and highly acknowledged, he is probably underrated by many.
Thanks for this video… I was born in San Francisco the year The Giants moved from New York. Willie Mays was my hero, and my God. So, any video that says the same thing gets my thumbs up. When I was 12 years old, I had a great experience of getting to go to the Giants clubhouse before a game, I met Willie briefly, and got his autograph with a lot of the other players. However, the 1954 World Series was against the Cleveland Indians not the New York Yankees… And I think you showed Joe DiMaggio’s picture when you mentioned Ted Williams. Anyway, thanks again for this video.
Watched a recent video about the dimensions of the Polo Grounds. Measurements taken by video creator stated that Mays caught Wertz' ball in the second deck of a normal ballpark today.
NOT overrated. By the way, you have a picture of Monte Irvin at one point but imply that it's Mays. Yes, they both played for the NY Giants and were in the outfield against the Indians when Mays made THE catch of Vic Wertz's drive over his head.
@@baseballplus Aaron was the greatest slugger of his era, even put up better numbers than Mays in some areas, but he never really captured the idolizing minds of the fans. I didn't live in Milwalkee or Atlanta, so I could be wrong.
Mays was great but he hit from 1960 thru the time he was traded to the Mets he hit more homers 204 at candle stick and 202 on the road.when he played in n.y in the 50s his team played 8 games per seasons against the Brooklyn dodgers s small park.after the giants move to San Fran he played 3 seasons at seals stadium and over 3 seasons have 29 34 29 in those 3 seasons at the end of the 1960 season mays complaint to the owner that they the giants should move the out field and they did .the distance was move 109 ft.420 became 400 ft right and left field be came 337 .in his career he hit into 254 double plays .with the shorter out field his stats in creased.wjen you compare candlestick to Yankee stadium and do the out fields dementioms Yankee stadium was from 51 thru 68 .get this 43.6 times larger than candlestick.had Mays played their his homes would have outs or doubles.great player in a reduced ball park.candlestick had one 400 outfield marker Yankee stadium had 4 400 plus markers.big difference.😅b
Last mantle hit appx between 15 and 18 baseballs right in front of the death valley 457 and 465 out field .had mantle played at candle stick his 536 homers would have been be appx 275 more hers.bit this only a speculation.total stats are great but it's how many world series rings do ball players have in their career? That's to me Hallmark of greatness.12 pendants vs 4 ? Mays vs mantle and 7 world series wins vs 1 .also mays nu have been reduced when you add 1 more season to his previously 22 seasons his homes per season go to 28.4 vs mantles 29.77 that plus his r.b.is avg per season also take a reductions plus his .302 life time batting avg goes to .301.😢
If you're going to put out content that you don't know anything about, do your research, the Giants played the Indians in the 1954 WS when he made "The catch", not the Yankees!

The Greatest Centre fielder of all time .
Even if you may have hated the teams they were on, you couldn't hate Willie and Yogi.
I caught Willie Mays's 559th homerun in August 1967
You still have it?
You are so lucky. I hope you still have it.
Greatest all-around player ever. Say hey, Willie!

The way he pronounced Willie McCovey’s last name hurt to hear
Vic Wertz played for the Cleveland Indians in the 1954 world series.

Your correct. He never played for the Yankees.
NOT overrated.

He was The Elvis Presley of Baseball. Meaning he was The King of the Game
Well put. :)
Thanks for the reply. Willie was better than them all. Many greats - But Willie was the Greatest of All Time@@dougamundson6836
He should have won 2 or 3 more MVPs since he had the best stats and defense in years he came in 3rd, 4th, or 5th.
I heard it was because he was a "warlock." He made a cameo appearance on "Bewitched" as himself, but with magical powers! 😉
👍⚾️
Thanks Aaron

It's not pronounced: Willie McCoevy It's: McCuvee.
Do you realize that you have a picture of Monte Irvin and NOT Willie Mays at about 0:16??? You may want to change that. A tad insulting.

..@ 4:53 ..that’s not a picture of Mays .. I appreciate the respect given to Willie ..but this is lame ..
The Yankees, Vick Wertz??? Come on man!!! If you are not a baseball fan you prolly shouldn’t be doing these types of videos. Man!
"the MLB" is extremely incorrect English and pure cringe. Just say "the majors."
