Jackie's weakest Sport was Baseball ........ Football , Basketball and Track were stronger. Having read several of his Bio's and other info I've come to the conclusion that running was his strongest asset. Not only was he Fast but he was Very Fast from a standing start. His base running skill is I think the "Best Runner" ever in Baseball. Why , because the leads he would take off 1st 2nd and 3rd bases. He drove pitcher's crazy getting many Balks. I remember several years ago one of the Dodger Hitters saying "They got many extra hits with Robinson on base" because it was hard for the pitcher to concentrate on their pitching. I remember reading where Robinson got the Dodgers a "Run" from his base running skill - He could take "Long Leads" off the bases( longer than the average runner) and they couldn't pick him off. First he was walked to First base , then He stole 2nd ... now dancing off 2nd pitcher is getting worried but Robinson steals 3rd. Now on 3rd Robinson liked to not just take a big lead But do a "Fake Mini Run down the Base Line". Now He didn't have to steal "Home" the pitcher "Balked" Robinson Home. The greatest Year any Collage Athlete Ever had was probably Robinson's Jr. Year at UCLA 4 sport letterman(only time in UCLA History) . Football he averaged 12.2 yards a carry new school record. then in Basketball lead the PAC 8 back then in Scoring twice. then in Track He broke His Brother's running broad jump record with a leap of 24 feet 10 1/4 inches. That's right His older brother Mack went to UCLA and Mack went to the 1938 Olympic's and came in 2nd to Jessie Owens in the 200yd Dash Silver Medal.

When I was probably 6 or 7 in the late 80s, my Grandfather took me and my cousin to a Braves game in Atlanta. We were from Jacksonville and were staying with my grandfather’s brother for the weekend. Late in the game, my cousin was a quarter short of enough money to buy a hotdog, and this pretty lady gave him that quarter. She then walked him back to our seats and told us she was Tom Glavine’s fiancé and offered to take us down on the field after the game (which was about to end) to meet some of the players in the dugout! Would you like to know what my grandfather said? “No thanks, it’s too late. Y’all need to get to bed.” I’m 41 now and it still stings 😫 That being said, I loved my grandfather and I’d rather have him back than to have ever gone down to that dugout!

I know there were other great switch hitters , but he is the best that i ever witnessed. He could bust the cover off the ball from either side. I also witnessed Hank Aaron golf many a homer out of the park in Atlanta. I'd have to say Henry Aaron was the greatest hitter all time.

He is a hall of famer and my favorite player growing up. I had his Topps rookie card and a friend of mine brought it to a game and got him to autograph it for me. He always batted above .300 and regularly hit 30+ HR’s and over 100 RBI’s and he had some gold gloves too.

A year ago I would have disagreed with the Hall of Fame talk. But, since Joe Mauer has been selected to the Baseball Hall of Fame, this certainly opens the door for Don Mattingly. He should be in the MLB HoF. Like Boston should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

As a Yankee fan, Mattingly is my second biggest omission after Munson, who is only excluded because he died. In the 1970s, he was the best overall catcher in baseball, besting Bench and Fisk in nearly every defensive and offensive statistic. He was an MVP and ROY and possibly the greatest postseason player in history. He played the requisite ten seasons and his ten season career was certainly HOF caliber. His exclusion is honestly disgusting to me. Because as I said, he's literally not in because he died.
