You've got the catcher's gear rule all messed up. The catcher can catch the ball with either hand or even trap the ball against their body. In other words the ball can definitely hit "any other gears" as you put it. It is only when the catcher intentionally uses the gear on his body to assist in catching or picking up a ball, that is a 3-base award. Usually this is when the catcher has the mask in his hand and the ball is rolling away from him while a play is going on, and he reaches out with the mask to scoop it up or pull it to him. But, he definitely *can* catch the ball with his body or against gear on his body.

If MLB changed the rules for minor leaguers, less bonus money, but a yearly salary starting at $75K a year, would this be approved by the players association? A ball $75K AA $85K AAA $100k? So there should be no reason for a minor league player to report out of shape! If they’re getting roughly $5000 per month, they don’t have to work other jobs, and can concentrate on being in shape.
