I am 38 and my skin is pretty "normal" with no dryness or particular oily areas. I do have early signs of aging like fine lines/texture, as well as some sun damage and REDNESS!
I don't use fake tan, but I get very tan naturally in the summer as I have an olive undertone so my face is often a LOT lighter than my body, because I keep my face very well protected to keep my melasma under control and signs of aging at bay!

I’ve been deep into the perfume world for about 10 years. The more I’ve smelt, the more picky I have realised I am. I may like a perfume enough to buy a bottle of after smelling 20 samples, and I tend to like certain houses but not others, where nothing works for me. Also I have learned to take my time with a perfume sample or decant and never buy something on a first impression.

Strongly agree. I've learned to consider carefully whether or not to buy a full bottle. Miniatures, travel sprays, and half used sprays are available on eBay, and quite often, I'll use those up and decide to move on to something else.
I wouldn't feel safe buying a partially used splash, aka dabber, but I do buying a spray. I suppose somebody could tamper with a spray, but I'd guess it's hard to do it without it being visible.
Also, I learned about decants! Bless the people who sell those! If I just hate something (looking at you, Paloma Picasso EDP), I can just throw away the decant without feeling guilty.

I have to admit: I am a fraghead. But I do think it's very important to not fall in the rabbit hole, because I do want to enjoy my collection. Having too much means I can enjoy them less. I don't want that. So I have set myself a boundary, I don't want to own more than twenty fragrances. This includes travel sizes. Ideally I would finish one up before buying something new, but I still find that a challenge.
I know I like variety, I know I am usually tired of a scent by the time I'm done with it, so I buy the small option. I prefer 30 ml, but not everyone provides that, so 50 ml is okay too. I really prefer not buying 100 ml bottles, because I'm never going to finish that. I do know that this is not the most value for money, but neither is decluttering big bottles because I don't want them anymore.
I don't force myself to finish a perfume I fell out of love with. Those ones I put in a separate box, and ever so often I look at what is in it. I then decide to either give it away or start using it again. Sometimes the love returns.
But the most important thing to me is that I want to enjoy it, and owning too many would take away from that.

Well now you've done it! I've been happily going along *only* into makeup and clueless/uninterested about fragrance, thinking that I don't like most of them anyway.... after watching this video, I've tried your recommended steps, and now I'm IN! I got a big sampler from Macy's, I've been taking copious notes, I've been looking them up at fragrantica, and paying attention to which notes keep coming up in the ones I like. THEN I was shopping in a department store with a friend killing time while she tried some things, and when a salesperson at a fragrance counter asked what I like, I could finally answer that question, and then they presented me with a sample I actually loved! It works!

This video is such a delight, Charlotte! Thank you! I rotated 4 aquatic fragrances until just about last year when I started getting that same feeling you described about wanting more from my fragrances. I’ve since discovered that I also really enjoy tobacco notes, which has led me to currently explore some warmer, spicier scents. It’s like an entire world has just opened up to me 😅

At 60, I’ve used the Tova Borgnine fragrances, still sold on QVC. You don’t smell them a lot on anyone else & yes, people will ask what you are wearing. There is also a website here in the US called Fragrance Revival, that sells copies of discontinued perfumes. If it’s not exact, it’s very close. Sorry, but at present, they don’t ship internationally. I listen to some videos on the favorite perfumes of Princess Katherine, the late Queen Elizabeth & out of curiosity, I order samples of those. My Mom’s signature perfume was Hypnotique by Max Factor. They quit making that back in the late 70’s. Philosophy, also sold on QVC, has some really nice perfumes. Amazing Grace & Pure Grace are two of my favorites & they also have small bottles for you to try. Sometimes if a fragrance doesn’t last on your skin, use a scent free lotion on your skin first for any fragrance to stick to & maybe that will help. Or maybe see if they have a scented lotion & layer. It’s also good to wear a perfume that matches the season. More spices for autumn, for example. I found Tova’s Love Everlasting perfume reminds me of Christmas. Not heavy but great scent for Winter.😉

Loved this video Charlotte, wish I had it a couple of years ago :D Great tips as well about discovery sets and ordering from the house directly. I haven't been too adventurous yet but when I've bought from say, Dior or Atelier Cologne, I was so impressed with the packages I got and the little treats that came with. Dior for a while kept sending me lots of samples as well - probably because I was spending too much haha!

I think Discovery Sets are a great idea. I bought two Commodity discovery sets, one for myself obvs and the other for my daughter as a Xmas gift. I'm glad I did as I didn't like any of them so saved myself from shelling out on a full bottle (I gave my discovery set to my SIL). Just hoping my daughter likes hers 😳. I also bought a Mancera set which I actually chose the samples myself and liked a couple but not enough to buy a full bottle. I'm eyeing up Ormonde Jayne as a next possible try out. Some great tips Charlotte and I'll be looking more into Fragrantica than I have already, I didn't realise you could have an account and do the comparisons etc, so thanks for the heads up👍. I'd love to go on a perfume/fragrance course or experience just to be able to identify notes as I'm rubbish at that. I know what I do and don't like but no clue as to identifying them🙄.

I'm lucky I live within 5 minutes of an Ulta and now Sephora too so I am able to try a lot fragrances in store, especially the "new hot" ones and it really is helpful. Actually wearing the perfume on your body for a full day tells you a lot if you really want to buy it or not just blind buying online like I've done in the past. Sometimes I think I will love something and then I don't and vice versa..

Saffron, Orange Blossom, & Tobacco are my favs. It's crazy how D&G light blue was my signature scent for 10 years, but now I am drawn to gourmand, smoky, spicy, dark sensual scents.

I’ve had cases where I thought I’d like a specific fragrance from a house and then ended up not liking the one I wanted and loved another from the sample kits. I have a couple hundred samples and give them away to people who want to try new things (if it’s not for me).
I also always opt for travel sizes if available because I’m going to take a long time to get through them since I wear something different each time.

I've been using Fragrantica for years just for the "smells like" section, but not once did I stop and think I should make an account... oops. Doing it right now lol

This is a FANTASTIC video Charlotte. I’m in the early stages of my fragrance journey. I’m Maybe a year in and I have not headed your advice in at least one way. I do have a rather enormous collection of those tiny samples. I have discarded the ones I hate and discovered ones I like and even love. If I finish 2 or 3 ml and still like it, I just get a larger decant. I have a few exceptions to this. It definitely depends on whether a travel size/small size is easy to find, whether the perfume is both love and easy to wear often and is it relatively affordable? If so I’ll try and get the smallest bottle available. But I’m finding the larger decants especially for very pricey fragrances are so great! I fell hard for Initio Atomic Rose but I spray so little of it (I don’t seem to eat pefumes as you do) and I don’t want to wear it every day so a 10Ml decant makes much more sense. I’m also hopeful this hoarding of tiny samples helps me realize what is my tippy top favs. Im hopeful I can carefully and methodically curate a collection of things I am obsessed with. Rather than have 7 bottles of a scent profile I love, I’d like big bottles of one or two that I’ve discovered are my absolute favs, if that makes sense. Thanks again for doing this!
Lastly, Demi Rawlings App sniff is a really great resource as well!

I went down this rabbit hole and selected 7 perfume samples, 1ml each, with a 10% discount it was $45. Only liked one of them, and didn’t love any. Waste of $45! I ended up just trying the ones available locally (like at Ulta) - I just tested maybe 8-12 on strips, then from those I selected 4-6, and then I went in every day and sprayed a different one. That’s how I found my favorite perfumes. I wish I could try niche fragrances, but I’m not willing to waste a lot of money on things I end up disliking.

I like using Fragrantica as well. I just recently tried Angel’s Share and it’s a fascinating scent. Have you ever tried Replica’s By the Fireplace? I wonder if you would like it. I really enjoy your videos. Thank you!

I’m late to your channel but was recommended by pampered wolf. Thank you so much for recommending fragantica. I’ve looked at it before but didn’t realise how it works. It’s fantastic. Trouble is I’m going to be spending even more on perfumes now 😂

Sample websites have saved me a fortune. A lot of the time, I don't like a fragrance I thought I would. So ended up not buying the big size

Thank you! This was great information. We were always asked not to wear perfume in the office so when I'm not working it's like a special treat! I will admit I get overwhelmed trying fragrances in a store setting so ordering samples is a great way to go. Haha, my husband doesn't understand why you would need more than one or two perfumes 😂

In my life I only had like 6 different perfumes I liked and was wearing. One of them was limited edition. One of them was discontinued. And the other 4 I have bought several botels of during the years. I have 2 perfumes in my beauty cabinet. One more wintery and one more fresh. And now I found out buy looking them up in the website you recommend that there is one note that is in all of them. And that is " rose". I was shocked. Because I thought I don't liked rose smell at all. And I was not considering myself as a girl dat liked floral scent. But there is also Musk, amber, vanille and citrus and even Apple and pear coming back in the perfum I love. So interesting.

I've learned a lot about fragrance from you and Fragrantica over the last couple of years and I'm loving learning about the different notes etc and can identify some of the more obvious ones. However, there is an amazing fragrance house/shop in Havana in Cuba called Habana 1791 where I bought a fragrance called Emocion and got to choose a vintage bottle for it. I absolutely love the fragrance but have absolutely no idea what the notes are and I'm trying to find a similar fragrance in the UK. It seems impossible to contact the company to get information. I keep sniffing my fragrance every day desperate to try and work out the notes but I can't pick them out. It's so frustrating!!

I actually never bought perfume in my life, every perfume I have ever used has been gifts, usually from parents who pick up stuff in the duty free. I usually like vanilla notes, I think people assume I like Armani because I must have been gifted Armani perfumes at least over 10 times from various family members. I actually like the Huda ones but of course, no one ever gifts what I actually want unless I ask lol. Armani My Way is my all time favourite perfume, its the only one I don’t share and keep it out of sight so no one nicks a spray.

@@CharlotteHoldcroft to mix it up I guess I would need a bigger collection than the 4 that I currently own. Very tempting... although the minimalist in me is trying to convince me not to buy more perfumes until I finish the ones I have. Mixed feelings here 😅

I've been on Fragrantica so long that they used to do giveaways and I won it once. lol I know getting samples helps, and I agree to an extent. The discovery sets and samples add up though, and pretty soon a big part of your budget is in samples. So I tell people do a lot of research, read reviews, and test at a fragrance counter if you can.

    • @CharlotteHoldcroft
      @CharlotteHoldcroft  9 месяцев назад +1

Yes like I said don't go wild on samples! But testing is not an option for niche fragrances for most people. Certainly not in the UK 💞

I started with discovery sets but soon learned that they all smell the same. Also, my expectations were a little too high. I want a fresh, green scent. Rain, grass, leaves, and non-foodie type fruits are my scents. But when I want fresh,I end up with sandalwood and although that’s a nice scent, that’s not what I want. If you know of a brand that actually makes a true petrichor scent, I’ll love you forever. 💕🐾💕⛈️

I definitely qualify as a fragrance dummy because my impression of them is not very nuanced. I can pick out one main note, maybe two at the most. I also tend to hate the fragrances that are most talked up on social media. I want to get into it but I just don’t feel like I have the nose for it. Would love to know how you tell the difference between poor performance and nose blindness because I have a real problem with the latter.

    • @CharlotteHoldcroft

I thought last night to pull out some samples I’d received and NOT liked and put them in the website to try to figure out why I don’t like them. As you said, that is also very valuable information. Turns out, I like vanilla in pancakes but not in perfume! Makes sense, I generally don’t like things to smell like food unless they are food.
