    I bought this edition last year, but only recently set out to read it cover to cover. I've finished Matthew and Romans, and already it has become my #2 NT version, replacing the NKJV. This version fills a huge gap in available Byzantine-type English New Testaments.
    For a "layman" like myself, the footnotes are some of the most valuable I have seen. I know practically nothing of Greek, but it strikes me as being a quite formal translation. I have high hopes for the future of the EOB.
    Regarding physicality, I can't help but feel that those wide margins are wasted real estate; we could have had a much larger text to fill all that space. Still a very nice edition, though.

    My Dear Sir, thank you once again for a great review. I also still have my Gideon’s KJ-NT. It’s been my “car bible” for over 40 yrs. I find your work on the EONT most helpful & will be returning to your earlier video on the larger paperback volume. As I’m sure you know mainline NT textual criticism these days (using CBGM) seems to be trending towards text types such as the MT & the PT. Maybe our Gideon’s KJV’s were right all along.

      Thanks for commenting, Sandy! I can remember a substitute teacher in high school who read aloud from the King James Bible. By that time, the Supreme Court had ruled against it -- or at least that was the way the court ruling was interpreted. But no one had the nerve to tell this woman to stop. She was about 80 years old at the time and had been a missionary in China when the Communists took over.

    Now the sound is perfect in this video. Thanks for fixing it! I have this same Orthodox new testament but the font is too small for me to barely read. I like the "uniquely-begotten Son" in John 3:16 and "deliver us from the evil one" in the Lord's Prayer. I don't generally have much use for the maps so i wish they had put in the Psalms instead.

    Oh my, that Gideon's NT in the NKJV version was my very first ever Bible back in the early 90s. I've continued to use the NKJV ever since. Wonderful video. While I'm in no way a TR or KJV only person (I use the NKJV instead), I do prefer the Byzantine Text type. That's again the advantage of the NKJV with the translation notes.

I only own two Psalters, both of which were gifts: A Psalter for Prayer (Holy Trinity Publications) and Reading the Psalms with Luther (Concordia Publishing House). Both books are of good quality and have a sewn binding (which is strangely important to me). However, they both have a similar downfall: they are denomination specific.

      @@rachelkarslake7787 I have two psalters and would recommend them both, one is from Holy Transfiguration Monastery (Greek Orthodox) available in two sizes, Smyth Sewn, beautiful layout with red drop caps, ornamental designs and images/icons, the language is Old English similar to KJV but the translation has been worked on for many years as they sought to render an English translation to sing/chant with the Byzantine tones used by Greek speaking monks and laity. The other psalter is a collection of Saint Ephraim the Syrians psalms (4th Cent) compiled by Bishop Theophan the Recluse (19th Cent) it has a similar layout but has a ribbon marker and gold guilded edges, it includes 150 psalms to mirror the Psalms of David, published by St. John of Kronstadt Press (Russian Orthodox) Personally I would use the latter more often. Random sample - Psalm 74:1 ' Who will cure my soul if not Thou, O Christ, the only Physician of souls! Where will I find a remedy for the diseases of my soul, if not with Thee, O fountain of healing!... Thou Who didst cure the ailing woman, cure also my soul from the ruin of sin.' God Bless.

    What’s the case for not having the red letters? Is it that it’s all just as important? Just curious

    • @RGrantJones
      @RGrantJones  Месяц назад

      That question comes up often. Here's my response:
      Red letters often cause me eye strain -- actual physical pain. Publishers seem to have difficulty printing them evenly, so you’re more likely to find faded sections of red text. Black text is often printed on the opposite side of the page, causing show-through/ghosting, and I find red characters on a cluttered background harder to read than black characters on the same background.
      I made a video on this topic, which can be viewed here: ruclips.net/video/Bzz2Bu9IjrA/видео.html .

    I have a question. Do Christians consider entire Bible the verbatim word of God, or is it an inspired word of God? Is all of the Bible holy for you guys or only a part of it? To me it is clear that Gospels will have higher value than the letters in New Testament. And Torah ought to have more value than other books in Old Testament? According to Quran Abraham was given a scripture (not named in Quran), Moses (Torah), David (Psalms), and Jesus (Gospel) were given too, and their scriptures are named. So, from Quranic perspective only these books are holy in Bible + the pamphlets of other minor prophets (which are included in the Prophets of Old Testament).

    • @RGrantJones
      @RGrantJones  4 года назад +1

      Thanks for the questions, Hassan! Various Christian groups have different views. Some believe the words of Scripture were dictated by God. At the other extreme you'll find those who assert that the Bible is a purely human book.
      As to the status of the books, views vary here as well. I believe that the Orthodox value some books (e.g., the Gospels) more than others. I've heard that some Lutherans consider Hebrews, James, Jude, 2 Peter, 2 and 3 John, and Revelation (collectively referred to as the Antilegomena) to be less authoritative than other books.
      And I think there are Christians who treat only the words in the Gospels printed in red ink as relevant.

    • @hassanmirza2392
      @hassanmirza2392 4 года назад

      @@RGrantJones It is all very diverse, the interpretations. But I think it is not surprising, Bible is a collection of many books, so opinions can differ widely. Maybe Jews do the same with their Jewish Bible, the have 24 books (which are actually 39 books of Protestant Bible). I personally think that Jews and Christians have done an enormous job of preserving whatever they could of Abrahamic tradition in Bible. That is why Muslims should read Bible too, not to criticize but to read it as literature at least. There are secondary sources too, like Talmud and Church Father books (like Hadiths) but those are less important Bible and Quran. If there is truth to world religions, then it has to be in these two books only. Rest of the traditions (Far Eastern, Indian, African) are sheer paganism and confusion.
