I am waiting Ryzen 9000, but expected pricing seems to be at 7000 release levels, so it will make sense only to few . But waiting seems contraproductive, 7500f will be probably sold out and new one won't come out soon, untill AMD collect some defective higher end chips or get demand saturated, making some 9500f just to sell something. Intel 14100f doesn't make sense and any of new ones i3 doesn't bring significant uplift over my i3-10100f. The only "cheap" 2x faster chip in single core is 7500f and its still 2x more money for 2x more performance. Not speaking about 2x more expensive DDR5. Maybe Arrow lake bring some competition. These productivity ones seem more iffy than the gaming ones imo. Intel's e-cores if used, are very useful for professional work. Gaming I'd honestly just expect to be pretty close to a 7800x3D, so these are also possibly a bit inflated but likely not as bad.
Same here! Waiting for 9800x3d to replace my 9900k. Sad it doesnt get increased cache, but I'm hoping for some decent (~15%) IPC and memory speed improvements. (edit: Compared to 7800x3d, that is).

B840 specs like only supporting PCIe3.0 stinks of intentionally misleading customers into thinking they get a midrange chipset instead of the successor of the A620. A820 would have been the appropriate name. In the face of entry level gpus not running on x16, that's a huge disadvantage for budget builds.

Isn't the B for budget? Lol Personally, I won't get anything less than a X board. Budget builds are at a disadvantage by nature. Today, X670e boards are going for around $200. They'll be even lower once the X800 series boards are released. Some X670e boards have PCIe 5.0x16, quad M.2, and 2.5Gb LAN. Great for those looking for a "budget build".

If the rumors about the Ring Bus is true and it is the thing that kills the i9s I don't think the 14900 or 13900 should even be on the benchmark charts at this point. Even Digital Extremes came out with their error figures and i7s seem to not be immune. They just degrade slower than the i9s intel gonna get sued, hard
Yeah, from Level1Tech's recent video even with a lower power profile the degradation still occurs. They really aren't stable even at lower performance levels.
I think this is a good call, realistically that CPU is fine, especially if you don't have a 4090. Jump all the way to the '10800X3D', which is hopefully a drop-in, and enjoy the gains.

@@bumperxx1 Are you asking for an explanation or???? The games I play largely depend on single core speed, so my 8700k at 5Ghz hardly trails behind the last few generations. I have a 4080 which helps a lot, but the system is not well balanced. Other games play just fine, but looking forward the latest and greatest in the coming months.
AMD has no competition in the high end space at this time, because Intel does not produce "reliable" competitive products in the same class. I hope Intel gets it's stuff together before it's too late, because we as consumers need a competitive market or we will be paying for it, literally.
Intel is more than financially fine, they still own the OEM market by a wide margin simply because Intel pays these OEMs enough to only make Intel high-end laptops. Intel needs to feel a lot more financial pain in order to get them to change their ways. They are still artificially segmenting their motherboards, they are still trying to block AMD from getting a foothold in the laptop market in an anti-competitive manner, and they are even trying to sweep the whole instability issue under the rug by not talking about it. Intel have clearly learned nothing.

As with anything, the PC gaming community completely overblows issues. A vocal minority of people making a big stink about issues that affect VERY few systems. In the end, high end consumer make up very little of intels sales. I don't blame Nvidia for scamming gamers because in the end you're gonna buy the product anyways.
If this stuff has been going on for a while now in servers and whatnot I'm sure AMD is already aware about how bad it is as some are switching to AMD as per Level1tech's video. Now will they? possibly but I doubt it will be higher. I think it will be the same as the 7000 chips and then when intel comes out with their -whatever the fuck they call it- ultra AMD will drop prices SUPER hard to shut intel out of the market as much as possible. The 9000 chips will be on the same process node so it wont cost them any more for TSMC to make (probably less as it is an older node now). We'll see tho.
8:40 I don't think this explanation about the memory timings is the main reason for the difference in latency AMD is talking about. There is a much more likely to be the bigger factor based in Buildzoid's (Actually Hardcare Overclocking) previous testing with DDR5-8000 speeds on AM5. In order for Zen 4 to go significantly higher than DDR5-6000, it has to significantly reduce its memory controller clock in order to maintain a fixed ratio between memory clock and memory controller clock. The reduced memory controller clock is what hurts latency which is why it isn't benifical to go over DDR5-6000 or so on AM5 even after the Bios updates rolled out allowing for 8000+ speeds on motherboards that can support it. Memory timings are measured in clock cycles so to get the actual latency in seconds, you have to devide the clock cycles by the frequency of the memory. For example you have a DDR5 6000 CL30 kit so to find the Cas latency of the memory you have to devide the 30 clock cycles by 3000 since DDR5 6000 actually runs at 3000mhz which gets 10 nano seconds. This means that a DDR5 4000 CL20 and DDR5 8000 CL40 has the same Cas Latency measured in seconds. I also don't believe that AMD isn't going to massively improve the Memory Controller speed since the IO die should be on the same or very similar process node. This means that the situation with Zen 4 is going to be pretty much identical to Zen 5. If you want more details, check out Buildzoid's video where he tests near DDR5-8000 speed memory for the first time. His channel is called Actually Hardcore Overclocking, and the video is called "Testing out new AMD AGESA 1007b: DDR5-7600 CL34 on the Asrock B650 Live Mixer". Edit: If Steve or Tim ends up reading this, please contact Buildzoid or someone of similar experience if you guys end up testing the memory frequency switching feature that was talked about in this video. He can help with testing, the explanations on how this all works, with what circumstances it would make sense for (very niche) and what hardware would be most optimal to take advantage of the feature. Based on his testing yearly a year ago with Zen 4, you need a dual CCD for the extra bandwidth of the higher frequencies to even come into play, since the Infinity fabric bandwidth going to one CCD is less than the bandwidth running significantly above DDR5-6000. And since AMD didn't mention any changes to the Infinity fabric for Zen 5, this should apply as well. My guess is that this is AMD doing this to test the feature for Zen 6 since that is rumored to have a new IO die. They could also have developed this Incase they needed to launch a 24 core 8+16c core config or a 8 core die with v-cashe and 16C core for the ultimate i9 killer. Though this could always just be the engineers messing around and coming up with something cool for super enthusiasts. Either way it is cool but probably very few people will try it let alone have the feature turned on all the time.
Cheers for the buildzoid-info -- he's pretty much THE guy when it comes to memory-overclocking on YT. Interesting notion that btw -- AMD themselves have said that there will be little difference in the actual IO-die, compared to Zen4 -- but they show higher official supported speeds in their slides here. Does that mean that they essentially just normalized the rare OC-speeds that Zen4 could achieve? So, in essence, more of the chips can reach those speeds now.
@@predabot__6778 i think its pure marketing. the IO die is identical, and i guess the infinity fabric clock will be identical aswell, which also means that you can probably just run the same zen4 memory speed without going async mode. going async mode drops the fabric clock to a lower ratio which introduces a huge latency penalty because the speed is halved. you have to have insanely high dram clockspeeds to get the infinity fabric back to its initial 1:1 speed. thats why its not worth to run memory at higher speeds that dont run in 1:1 mode with the infinity fabric clock. in theory you can already run 7000+ MT clockspeeds on zen4, but you lose performance, because you cannot run it in 1:1 mode. and this wont change with zen5, so being able to run DDR5 8000 instead of DDR5 7600 while you'd need DDR5 12000 to equalize the lower clock divider for the IF is rather pointless. amd needs more divider steps so you can always run the infinity fabric at close to max speed, but that surely would need a new IOD.

Honestly, until my 5800X3D starts holding back GPU as badly as my i7 4790K was (some games saw my GTX 1070 being bottlenecked), I am someone who will be quite happy to stay on AM4 for a very long time. More than enough bandwidth between the CPU and chipset for my storage needs (X570S), and with the performance of the CPU itself, and the fact that I am content with gaming on 75Hz screens, I'm better off spending money on improved cooling and better GPU (when prices aren't absurd).
Same here brother, same here. That cpu can last a long time still. Maybe even one additional generation. I don’t have anything currently that stresses it so I really expect a very long life for it
If the AM4 trend holds for AM5, you'll either be on the last generation of AM5 (meaning boards should be cheap and quality), or have another generation to upgrade to in the future. 👌
Yeah only reason to upgrade is if you are someone who doesn't feel 60fps is a great experience. I expect the vast majority of games will hit 60fps on that chip until the next console generation.

Thought about getting the 5700x because I already have an AM4 board. Only problem, it's from tuf-gaming and I try to do a white build if the budget doesn't absolutely prevent it. I'll probably go with a 7000 COU after the new ones drop
Upgrading gen-on-gen is rarely worth it. Which is why "two generations per motherboard" is completely and utterly useless. If we take AMD's claims about 16% IPC increase as gospel, and speculate that the X3D chips won't see a clock increase either, then the 9800X3D will be 16% faster than the 7800X3D. Heck let's say the new dynamic memory tuning thingie also kicks in and does a few percent, then at an absolute stretch you'd be looking at +20%. There is no way I'm reaching for my wallet for 20% more.... I have a 7950X3D and XTX at 1440p myself, and the only way AMD can make me reach for my wallet this generation is if they make a "9970X3D" with 8 Zen 5X3D cores and 16 Zen 5c cores. Getting a 15-20% gaming uplift AND a 30-40% productivity uplift would be worth it.

I get the feeling this will be only a lukewarm generation. I don't see sense of the 9000 series over the 7000 right now. B850 over B650 seems to be so negligible as well.
People have opinions about CPU temps for reasons that are not technically sound. The Pentium 4 Prescott ran at 105C all day, every day (people called it "Preshot" and "Pentium Teacooker") and no premature failures were ever detected. The 13/14900Ks that are failing left right and center now are failing on people who run 420mm AIOs that keep them below 80C. If AMD thinks it's perfectly fine for Zen 4 to peek at 95C (and thus provide 3 years of warranty for that in the EU) then that's not a problem. My 7950X3D never goes there, even on multi hour long compile jobs, but if it did I'd be perfectly fine with it.

That being said, I would sooner buy a 7800X3D and a 5080 or 5090 than spend the extra money to stick with a 4090 and get a 9800X3D. I imagine the 9800X3D is going to be probably $450-480, so there's probably going to be a $150-180 to be saved if you go 7800X3D. Especially considering that you're still GPU bottlenecked in most games
if you are on 7000 series, use your money for a gpu upgrade not a cpu upgrade. You will get a lot more performance with that then a cpu upgrade.. we are gpu bound anyway currently. cpu tech has leaped light years ahead of gpu tech.
Still rocking a 8086k and a 1080Ti, but these Ryzen processors are getiing more and more enticing. I like how AMD are going the efficiency and not the brureforce path. I'd much rather have a little slower but hugely more efficient tech in my computer. Same goes for graphic cards.
@@GameBacardi Uh, yes. You basically get a 7800X3D for gaming and a 7950X for productivity. HUBs last review had it 2% slower in gaming than the 78000X3D and the number is largely driven down by Cyberpunk being a bitch about it without manual intervention, but HUB always tests default behaviour (which is the correct approach if you ask me). I cooked up a powershell script on Windows and a shell script on Linux that launches games tied to the CCD of my choosing ("gamelaunch -0 /path/to/game" ties it to the V-Cache CCD and -1 ties it to the vanilla CCD) and then edited my game shortcuts. Some older games prefer frequency over cache, so I'm effectively choosing between a 7700X and a 7800X3D for each game. The neat part is that I can start a compile job in the background on the 8 remaining cores, and because compiling is pretty lax on memory bandwidth I get close to the same AVG FPS and about 10% reduced 1% lows, which is perfectly acceptable with an XTX at 1440p.

@@edwinwelch1946 The top RDNA 4 card will apparently be slower than the 7900 XTX, but it will still be a generational improvement in terms of die size (and therefore cost). In other words it can still be competitive in the midrange if priced appropriately, think of it as an RDNA 1 type generation instead of 2 or 3. They reportedly cancelled their largest and most complex die for this gen because they decided it wouldn't be price competitive, was going to take too long and the silicon would be better used elsewhere - like in that lovely two letter buzzword that we can't get away from at the moment. But also, what are you even doing that actually requires more power than a 7900 XTX? Like that card is going to kick arse for years yet

If you want a new build just build it whenever unless there is something new coming up really soon like less than a month soon. There will always be something around the corner so just build the pc and be happy about the performance.
My Ryzen 7840U laptop from Lenovo already does this. It only has two modes: 5600 and 6400, though. Haven't had a single system hiccup on Linux and the once-in-a-blue-moon hiccups on Windows 10 are, according to the event log, down to Windows being Windows.
The claims are made regarding thermals, not instructions in at least one of the charts shown. I wonder, how much simply results from the TSMC node, as an upgraded manufacturing process.
Nice idea, that CPU it's so powerful that it has a long life before thinking to get a new one. I bought mine like 2 months ago(same model) and ufff, was the best money spent this year.

Yeah, but on Zen 4 launch day the 5800X3D was about on par with the 7700X. It took a few new games in the benchmark suite, that were more memory bandwidth limited than compute limited, for the 7600X to "climb up there". If the 9600X already goes toe-to-toe with the 7800X3D then, in gaming, the IPC uplift is more than 16%, as the 7800X3D is about 16-18% faster than the 7700X but at ~5% lower clocks.
B840 without even PCIe 4.0 whilst the A620 even supports it?! Is this some kind of joke? Especially with graphics cards at the lower end or even midrange not getting 16 lanes and even enough VRAM to bypass that former limitation?! Should i laugh or cry?
It took a few weeks before prices really started moving. Then those kept declining until AMD seems to have found a price point they where comfortable with. But I suspect Ryzen 7000 won't be falling in price that much anymore. *It usually goes like that with AMD:* They are getting ready to announce and then release the next generation. During that period, they start lowering prices of the current gen. Then after release they continue to do some adjustments where needed to clear inventory. It also tends to work like that for video cards. Ryzen 5000 to 7000 however had two things going on. The first was the end of the COVID scarcity and high demand. AMD seems to have found itself with a lot of surplus Zen 3 and also RDNA2 chips because of that somewhat sudden collapse in demand. They still haven't sold all RDNA2 stock seeing as you can still find RX6600 and RX6700 series video cards. For Zen 3 they started price dumping after they had maintained quite high prices for a long time. Like that, they also cleared AM4 motherboard inventory. I suspect they are still making Zen 3, mainly for server applications. The lower quality chips that don't reach server standards, get sold as Ryzen 5000. Second was that DDR5 and AM5 motherboards where really expensive in the first few months. It allowed AMD to keep its Ryzen 7000 prices high, because the total platform costs where so high, that not everybody would be interested in going to AM5. If you where, you where willing to pay the premium. Once the DDR5 and motherboard prices started dropping, AMD also dropped its CPU pricing. And then AMD seems to have carried out a strategy of volume over maximum profits. All in all, I doubt AMD will be lowering Ryzen 7000 pricing by much. They seem to have done most of that already. It could still pay off to wait for a bit, but I would not expect much. 🙂
Ryzen 5000 uses the same core complex die as Epyc 7003. As long as Epyc 7003 is in production it costs amd nothing to keep making new Ryzen 5000 cpus. Ryzen 7000 doesn't use the same core complex die as Epyc 9004. I would imagine amd has stopped ordering new Ryzen 7000 CCDs and it will go out of production relatively soon.
Can't wait for real testing and benchmarking paired with a Nvidia 50xx Series card. I am also curious what number of cores will give better performance espcially on modern games.
Honestly the 9700X being the same in games as the 7800X3D without 3D-VCache is great news for people who want a good gaming cpu and a good productivity CPU, since the 9700X will easily crush the 7800X3D in productivity.

The 7700X is better than the 7950X in gaming too. It's not that surprising. The 9700X will have 8 cores in one CCD, while the 9900X will have 6 per CCD for 2 CCDs. The 9950X will have 2 eight core CCDs. Games generally typically use a max of eight cores, so the extra cores on the 9950X can actually be disadvantageous and lower performance.
I went AM5 and got a 7500F a couple months ago. Got a X670 MB because i wanted to overclock. I’m waiting to see what the 9800X3D has to offer, and if the rumors are true. I will gladly overclock, and curve optimize the cpu, and get the most out of it, I’ll just throw my 7500F into my itx build i have on the side.

I'll be waiting for the 9800X3D before deciding whether I'm upgrading or not. I'm on a B550m/5700X system and my main problem right now is lack of IO, particularly USB. I would really like to build a new full ATX system and if I'm doing that I might as well get as much gaming headroom from my CPU as possible (within reasonable budget constraints). Of course this assumes the pricing is reasonable. If they jack the prices up, something that I wouldn't discount considering what's going on with team blue right now, I'll just continue to cope with the annoyance of not having enough USB. Ninety percent of my gaming happens on a Steam deck now so it's not like I'm desperate for more powerful silicon.
Literally went from my old Intel 7700k that I made like 7 years ago for a 7800X3D. I am going team red this time cause team blue isn't doing too well. They got complacent and thus started making bad products for absurd prices.

If you understand the architecture, you understand the first party benchmarks and the selection of these. Not a fan of the usb 4.0, I would rather have some PCIE-Lanes to plug in an affordable 25G NIC, but that seems nearly impossible for AM5 ...
I should upgrade from 5800x3d. It does look a bit anaemic next to 4090. But I hate the hassle of full platform upgrades and dealing with selling leftovers (people rarely want to buy a full set and don't want to come and pick it up). Too bad there is no official trade in/2nd hand stores where you can sell older hardware .
4:44 The chart did say 65W 9700x, AMD maybe cited the 120w tdp or PBO performance due to lackluster result compared to 7800x3d. 65w is just too low anyway for x model skus. So imo 65w tdp is 12% better than 5800x3d and 120w tdp/ PBO turned on is 2% better than 7800x3d. AMD and their last minute changes lol.

x670e latest bios firmware takes a very long time to boot unless you enable context memory but that will create ram latency. AMD still sucks when it comes to memory compatibility. I guess they will never learn.

I am waiting Ryzen 9000, but expected pricing seems to be at 7000 release levels, so it will make sense only to few .
But waiting seems contraproductive, 7500f will be probably sold out and new one won't come out soon, untill AMD collect some defective higher end chips or get demand saturated, making some 9500f just to sell something.
Intel 14100f doesn't make sense and any of new ones i3 doesn't bring significant uplift over my i3-10100f.
The only "cheap" 2x faster chip in single core is 7500f and its still 2x more money for 2x more performance. Not speaking about 2x more expensive DDR5.
Maybe Arrow lake bring some competition.

These productivity ones seem more iffy than the gaming ones imo. Intel's e-cores if used, are very useful for professional work. Gaming I'd honestly just expect to be pretty close to a 7800x3D, so these are also possibly a bit inflated but likely not as bad.

Personally, I won't get anything less than a X board. Budget builds are at a disadvantage by nature. Today, X670e boards are going for around $200. They'll be even lower once the X800 series boards are released. Some X670e boards have PCIe 5.0x16, quad M.2, and 2.5Gb LAN. Great for those looking for a "budget build".

If the rumors about the Ring Bus is true and it is the thing that kills the i9s I don't think the 14900 or 13900 should even be on the benchmark charts at this point. Even Digital Extremes came out with their error figures and i7s seem to not be immune. They just degrade slower than the i9s

I think this is a good call, realistically that CPU is fine, especially if you don't have a 4090. Jump all the way to the '10800X3D', which is hopefully a drop-in, and enjoy the gains.

@@bumperxx1 Are you asking for an explanation or???? The games I play largely depend on single core speed, so my 8700k at 5Ghz hardly trails behind the last few generations. I have a 4080 which helps a lot, but the system is not well balanced. Other games play just fine, but looking forward the latest and greatest in the coming months.
AMD has no competition in the high end space at this time, because Intel does not produce "reliable" competitive products in the same class. I hope Intel gets it's stuff together before it's too late, because we as consumers need a competitive market or we will be paying for it, literally.

Intel is more than financially fine, they still own the OEM market by a wide margin simply because Intel pays these OEMs enough to only make Intel high-end laptops.
Intel needs to feel a lot more financial pain in order to get them to change their ways. They are still artificially segmenting their motherboards, they are still trying to block AMD from getting a foothold in the laptop market in an anti-competitive manner, and they are even trying to sweep the whole instability issue under the rug by not talking about it.
Intel have clearly learned nothing.

As with anything, the PC gaming community completely overblows issues. A vocal minority of people making a big stink about issues that affect VERY few systems. In the end, high end consumer make up very little of intels sales.
I don't blame Nvidia for scamming gamers because in the end you're gonna buy the product anyways.
Due to the current issues coming out about Intel CPUs AMD will probably charge a premium for their new CPUs.

Now will they? possibly but I doubt it will be higher. I think it will be the same as the 7000 chips and then when intel comes out with their -whatever the fuck they call it- ultra AMD will drop prices SUPER hard to shut intel out of the market as much as possible. The 9000 chips will be on the same process node so it wont cost them any more for TSMC to make (probably less as it is an older node now).
We'll see tho.

8:40 I don't think this explanation about the memory timings is the main reason for the difference in latency AMD is talking about. There is a much more likely to be the bigger factor based in Buildzoid's (Actually Hardcare Overclocking) previous testing with DDR5-8000 speeds on AM5.
In order for Zen 4 to go significantly higher than DDR5-6000, it has to significantly reduce its memory controller clock in order to maintain a fixed ratio between memory clock and memory controller clock. The reduced memory controller clock is what hurts latency which is why it isn't benifical to go over DDR5-6000 or so on AM5 even after the Bios updates rolled out allowing for 8000+ speeds on motherboards that can support it.
Memory timings are measured in clock cycles so to get the actual latency in seconds, you have to devide the clock cycles by the frequency of the memory. For example you have a DDR5 6000 CL30 kit so to find the Cas latency of the memory you have to devide the 30 clock cycles by 3000 since DDR5 6000 actually runs at 3000mhz which gets 10 nano seconds.
This means that a DDR5 4000 CL20 and DDR5 8000 CL40 has the same Cas Latency measured in seconds.
I also don't believe that AMD isn't going to massively improve the Memory Controller speed since the IO die should be on the same or very similar process node. This means that the situation with Zen 4 is going to be pretty much identical to Zen 5.
If you want more details, check out Buildzoid's video where he tests near DDR5-8000 speed memory for the first time. His channel is called Actually Hardcore Overclocking, and the video is called "Testing out new AMD AGESA 1007b: DDR5-7600 CL34 on the Asrock B650 Live Mixer".
Edit: If Steve or Tim ends up reading this, please contact Buildzoid or someone of similar experience if you guys end up testing the memory frequency switching feature that was talked about in this video. He can help with testing, the explanations on how this all works, with what circumstances it would make sense for (very niche) and what hardware would be most optimal to take advantage of the feature.
Based on his testing yearly a year ago with Zen 4, you need a dual CCD for the extra bandwidth of the higher frequencies to even come into play, since the Infinity fabric bandwidth going to one CCD is less than the bandwidth running significantly above DDR5-6000. And since AMD didn't mention any changes to the Infinity fabric for Zen 5, this should apply as well.
My guess is that this is AMD doing this to test the feature for Zen 6 since that is rumored to have a new IO die. They could also have developed this Incase they needed to launch a 24 core 8+16c core config or a 8 core die with v-cashe and 16C core for the ultimate i9 killer. Though this could always just be the engineers messing around and coming up with something cool for super enthusiasts. Either way it is cool but probably very few people will try it let alone have the feature turned on all the time.
Cheers for the buildzoid-info -- he's pretty much THE guy when it comes to memory-overclocking on YT. Interesting notion that btw -- AMD themselves have said that there will be little difference in the actual IO-die, compared to Zen4 -- but they show higher official supported speeds in their slides here. Does that mean that they essentially just normalized the rare OC-speeds that Zen4 could achieve? So, in essence, more of the chips can reach those speeds now.
@@predabot__6778 i think its pure marketing. the IO die is identical, and i guess the infinity fabric clock will be identical aswell, which also means that you can probably just run the same zen4 memory speed without going async mode. going async mode drops the fabric clock to a lower ratio which introduces a huge latency penalty because the speed is halved. you have to have insanely high dram clockspeeds to get the infinity fabric back to its initial 1:1 speed. thats why its not worth to run memory at higher speeds that dont run in 1:1 mode with the infinity fabric clock.
in theory you can already run 7000+ MT clockspeeds on zen4, but you lose performance, because you cannot run it in 1:1 mode. and this wont change with zen5, so being able to run DDR5 8000 instead of DDR5 7600 while you'd need DDR5 12000 to equalize the lower clock divider for the IF is rather pointless. amd needs more divider steps so you can always run the infinity fabric at close to max speed, but that surely would need a new IOD.

Honestly, until my 5800X3D starts holding back GPU as badly as my i7 4790K was (some games saw my GTX 1070 being bottlenecked), I am someone who will be quite happy to stay on AM4 for a very long time.
More than enough bandwidth between the CPU and chipset for my storage needs (X570S), and with the performance of the CPU itself, and the fact that I am content with gaming on 75Hz screens, I'm better off spending money on improved cooling and better GPU (when prices aren't absurd).

Upgrading gen-on-gen is rarely worth it. Which is why "two generations per motherboard" is completely and utterly useless. If we take AMD's claims about 16% IPC increase as gospel, and speculate that the X3D chips won't see a clock increase either, then the 9800X3D will be 16% faster than the 7800X3D. Heck let's say the new dynamic memory tuning thingie also kicks in and does a few percent, then at an absolute stretch you'd be looking at +20%. There is no way I'm reaching for my wallet for 20% more....
I have a 7950X3D and XTX at 1440p myself, and the only way AMD can make me reach for my wallet this generation is if they make a "9970X3D" with 8 Zen 5X3D cores and 16 Zen 5c cores. Getting a 15-20% gaming uplift AND a 30-40% productivity uplift would be worth it.

I get the feeling this will be only a lukewarm generation. I don't see sense of the 9000 series over the 7000 right now. B850 over B650 seems to be so negligible as well.
I don't trust those Handbrake uplift numbers lol. Also the temp claims are good if true, was one of the reasons why I still kept my AM4 ITX system.
People have opinions about CPU temps for reasons that are not technically sound. The Pentium 4 Prescott ran at 105C all day, every day (people called it "Preshot" and "Pentium Teacooker") and no premature failures were ever detected. The 13/14900Ks that are failing left right and center now are failing on people who run 420mm AIOs that keep them below 80C.
If AMD thinks it's perfectly fine for Zen 4 to peek at 95C (and thus provide 3 years of warranty for that in the EU) then that's not a problem. My 7950X3D never goes there, even on multi hour long compile jobs, but if it did I'd be perfectly fine with it.

Especially considering that you're still GPU bottlenecked in most games

if you are on 7000 series, use your money for a gpu upgrade not a cpu upgrade. You will get a lot more performance with that then a cpu upgrade.. we are gpu bound anyway currently. cpu tech has leaped light years ahead of gpu tech.
About half the games on the 5800X3D vs 9700X slide showed that the 5800X3D was still really fast.
Still rocking a 8086k and a 1080Ti, but these Ryzen processors are getiing more and more enticing. I like how AMD are going the efficiency and not the brureforce path. I'd much rather have a little slower but hugely more efficient tech in my computer. Same goes for graphic cards.

@@GameBacardi Uh, yes. You basically get a 7800X3D for gaming and a 7950X for productivity. HUBs last review had it 2% slower in gaming than the 78000X3D and the number is largely driven down by Cyberpunk being a bitch about it without manual intervention, but HUB always tests default behaviour (which is the correct approach if you ask me).
I cooked up a powershell script on Windows and a shell script on Linux that launches games tied to the CCD of my choosing ("gamelaunch -0 /path/to/game" ties it to the V-Cache CCD and -1 ties it to the vanilla CCD) and then edited my game shortcuts. Some older games prefer frequency over cache, so I'm effectively choosing between a 7700X and a 7800X3D for each game. The neat part is that I can start a compile job in the background on the 8 remaining cores, and because compiling is pretty lax on memory bandwidth I get close to the same AVG FPS and about 10% reduced 1% lows, which is perfectly acceptable with an XTX at 1440p.

@@edwinwelch1946 The top RDNA 4 card will apparently be slower than the 7900 XTX, but it will still be a generational improvement in terms of die size (and therefore cost). In other words it can still be competitive in the midrange if priced appropriately, think of it as an RDNA 1 type generation instead of 2 or 3. They reportedly cancelled their largest and most complex die for this gen because they decided it wouldn't be price competitive, was going to take too long and the silicon would be better used elsewhere - like in that lovely two letter buzzword that we can't get away from at the moment.
But also, what are you even doing that actually requires more power than a 7900 XTX? Like that card is going to kick arse for years yet

If you want a new build just build it whenever unless there is something new coming up really soon like less than a month soon. There will always be something around the corner so just build the pc and be happy about the performance.

My Ryzen 7840U laptop from Lenovo already does this. It only has two modes: 5600 and 6400, though. Haven't had a single system hiccup on Linux and the once-in-a-blue-moon hiccups on Windows 10 are, according to the event log, down to Windows being Windows.
Will the 9600X have integrated graphics on the chip?

Nice idea, that CPU it's so powerful that it has a long life before thinking to get a new one. I bought mine like 2 months ago(same model) and ufff, was the best money spent this year.

AMD never said the 9700X would be faster than the 7800X3D? They said it would be a bit slower.
AMD also claimed they'll bring the 9700X TDP to 120W yet the slides just 2 weeks before launch states it'll have the same 65W TDP.

The 7600X is fairly close to the 5800X3D, so it isn't too shocking. Makes me excited to get the 9800X3D.
Yeah, but on Zen 4 launch day the 5800X3D was about on par with the 7700X. It took a few new games in the benchmark suite, that were more memory bandwidth limited than compute limited, for the 7600X to "climb up there". If the 9600X already goes toe-to-toe with the 7800X3D then, in gaming, the IPC uplift is more than 16%, as the 7800X3D is about 16-18% faster than the 7700X but at ~5% lower clocks.
B840 without even PCIe 4.0 whilst the A620 even supports it?! Is this some kind of joke? Especially with graphics cards at the lower end or even midrange not getting 16 lanes and even enough VRAM to bypass that former limitation?!

How long after the release of 7000 series did 5000 series price bottom out? Anyone think 7000 will hit the price floor by November?
It took a few weeks before prices really started moving. Then those kept declining until AMD seems to have found a price point they where comfortable with. But I suspect Ryzen 7000 won't be falling in price that much anymore.

They are getting ready to announce and then release the next generation. During that period, they start lowering prices of the current gen. Then after release they continue to do some adjustments where needed to clear inventory. It also tends to work like that for video cards.
Ryzen 5000 to 7000 however had two things going on.
The first was the end of the COVID scarcity and high demand. AMD seems to have found itself with a lot of surplus Zen 3 and also RDNA2 chips because of that somewhat sudden collapse in demand. They still haven't sold all RDNA2 stock seeing as you can still find RX6600 and RX6700 series video cards. For Zen 3 they started price dumping after they had maintained quite high prices for a long time. Like that, they also cleared AM4 motherboard inventory. I suspect they are still making Zen 3, mainly for server applications. The lower quality chips that don't reach server standards, get sold as Ryzen 5000.
Second was that DDR5 and AM5 motherboards where really expensive in the first few months. It allowed AMD to keep its Ryzen 7000 prices high, because the total platform costs where so high, that not everybody would be interested in going to AM5. If you where, you where willing to pay the premium. Once the DDR5 and motherboard prices started dropping, AMD also dropped its CPU pricing. And then AMD seems to have carried out a strategy of volume over maximum profits.
All in all, I doubt AMD will be lowering Ryzen 7000 pricing by much. They seem to have done most of that already. It could still pay off to wait for a bit, but I would not expect much. 🙂
Ryzen 5000 uses the same core complex die as Epyc 7003. As long as Epyc 7003 is in production it costs amd nothing to keep making new Ryzen 5000 cpus. Ryzen 7000 doesn't use the same core complex die as Epyc 9004. I would imagine amd has stopped ordering new Ryzen 7000 CCDs and it will go out of production relatively soon.
If they're hiding the price this close to launch, it means they raised prices and are trying to stave off the negative PR.
Can't wait for real testing and benchmarking paired with a Nvidia 50xx Series card. I am also curious what number of cores will give better performance espcially on modern games.

Honestly the 9700X being the same in games as the 7800X3D without 3D-VCache is great news for people who want a good gaming cpu and a good productivity CPU, since the 9700X will easily crush the 7800X3D in productivity.

The 7700X is better than the 7950X in gaming too. It's not that surprising. The 9700X will have 8 cores in one CCD, while the 9900X will have 6 per CCD for 2 CCDs. The 9950X will have 2 eight core CCDs. Games generally typically use a max of eight cores, so the extra cores on the 9950X can actually be disadvantageous and lower performance.
I went AM5 and got a 7500F a couple months ago. Got a X670 MB because i wanted to overclock. I’m waiting to see what the 9800X3D has to offer, and if the rumors are true. I will gladly overclock, and curve optimize the cpu, and get the most out of it, I’ll just throw my 7500F into my itx build i have on the side.

I'll be waiting for the 9800X3D before deciding whether I'm upgrading or not. I'm on a B550m/5700X system and my main problem right now is lack of IO, particularly USB. I would really like to build a new full ATX system and if I'm doing that I might as well get as much gaming headroom from my CPU as possible (within reasonable budget constraints).
Of course this assumes the pricing is reasonable. If they jack the prices up, something that I wouldn't discount considering what's going on with team blue right now, I'll just continue to cope with the annoyance of not having enough USB. Ninety percent of my gaming happens on a Steam deck now so it's not like I'm desperate for more powerful silicon.

Literally went from my old Intel 7700k that I made like 7 years ago for a 7800X3D. I am going team red this time cause team blue isn't doing too well. They got complacent and thus started making bad products for absurd prices.

I should upgrade from 5800x3d. It does look a bit anaemic next to 4090.
But I hate the hassle of full platform upgrades and dealing with selling leftovers (people rarely want to buy a full set and don't want to come and pick it up).
Too bad there is no official trade in/2nd hand stores where you can sell older hardware .

65w is just too low anyway for x model skus. So imo 65w tdp is 12% better than 5800x3d and 120w tdp/ PBO turned on is 2% better than 7800x3d.

The 7700x is 245 US on Amazon. Is that a good entry point into AM5. I am a retiree and I have to watch what I spend. I currently have a 5800x3d on AM4
If you have a Micro Center nearby you can do better with a bundle still. The 7800X3D bundle has the best motherboard pick, $499 for CPU, RAM, and MB.

I've seen the 7900x3d dip to 309 before. Not the best x3d chip for gaming, but 299-309 is pretty good for an all rounder.

If it still does memory training with every boot up then it will still suck. Intel never needed any of that nonsense.
Early Z790 bios versions (05XX) did in fact need memory training on EVERY single boot.
x670e latest bios firmware takes a very long time to boot unless you enable context memory but that will create ram latency. AMD still sucks when it comes to memory compatibility. I guess they will never learn.
