hello, hema practitioner here! I mostly do longsword (two handed weapon) and have some thoughts on the gear.
It's always recommended to have hard elbow pads with any hema jacket. You can buy some from the same website that will attach to the jacket you bought. We also use hard forearm protection to disperse force; this can be very minimal, like a thin sheet of kydex or similar. The gloves used depends on how hard the weapon hits. Longsword hits pretty hard, so I don't think kendo kote are good for that, though they might be fine for that katana you use. A hard plastic gorget, or throat protector, is also very highly recommended, because thrusts can slip under the mask and jacket collar and impact directly onto the throat.
the jacket you use doesn't have great shoulder mobility, though it's tolerable. there are other jacket options available with different pros and cons. mobility will get better as you break in the jacket, and the way you do certain techniques may need to be adjusted because of the jacket restrictions.
it's super cool to see y'all expanding into metal weapon simulators! it's a ton of fun and gives more context to the other weapon sports

Everyone thinking of buying one of these: PLEASE GET A GORGET TOO
I'm a HEMA longsword practitioner who uses a SPES jacket, and it's generally very good protection, but without a gorget (throat protector) worn underneath it won't save your neck from a hard thrust.

Those jackets can be stiff at the start but get better over time.
Also she might be using a jacket too big for her,the sizing matters a lot for getting into certain stances.
Check out the spes womens jackets(they have more than one model) and the custom sizing options(not sure about purpleheart armory but spes offers it for a small extra fee and it can make a huge difference in fit if you don't fit the regular sizing)

Id also suggest plastic protection for the chest, but especially elbows and hands.
Kvetun makes some great pieces of protection for example, but they're not the only ones around, lots of HEMA gear would suit you using that sparring katana.

Loving the videos where steel is getting involved! I have a HEMA background and been practicing kenjutsu against other HEMA people. I hope you guys will listen to one piece of advice on gear.
Please look into getting hand protection with a hard outer layer. Sparring Gloves Infinity Gloves are the ones I use as they allow me to manipulate the sword more, but SPES Heavy gloves will protect you more.
Please also look into getting a gorget for under the gambeson jacket as it protects your throat from getting seriously injured. Elbow protection is also highly recommended.
Back of the head protection should be mandatory as well, at the school I go to we tell people to not hit the back of the head, but accidents happen.

That answered all my question from last time. Myself, I bought a Red Dragon Armoury jacket, which is a bit stiffer. When you have trained two-handed for a time, the material in the joints becomes more pliable and one can move more easily.

It's cool you guys are exploring HEMA as well. It's good.
Two-handed sword, one-handed sword, dual wielding swords martial arts all got knowledge & techniques that are useful & relate to each other anyway.
It's not the type of sword that makes you a good swordsman it's the years of experience trying out what techniques work for you.

if you're buying a SPES jacket anyway, you should order a custom size one that fits you. it will not get in the way much while you're fencing, especially after you break it in.

Getting custom fitting, or just carefully selecting your size, will make a big difference in how the jacket feels and how much it restricts your mobility. The jackets also take some amount of time and use to soften up, and will then move more freely. They never stop being at least somewhat restrictive though.
The jacket Kim is wearing in this video looks at least a size or two too large for her.
A note to remember: the newton rating (350N, 800N, +) is the amount of puncture resistance the jacket or piece of equipment provides. It is NOT a measure of it's padding and how much it will soften strikes.
Hope to see you all continuing to experiment and have fun with weapon fighting. Be well.

Is there anyway a jacket can be made that look similar to the armor pieces of a Samurai? I really wish Kendo armor worked in HEMA. At least it looks much cooler than a hema jacket… :/. It reminds me of my motorcycle jacket. No thanks…

you can definitely play chudan in this jacket, that is the main guard that I use in longsword. It does feel strange at first, but once you wear it more it will become more broken in and more flexible at the joints. You'll figure it out though, I'm sure. Also it helps a lot to have the right sleeve length, I think the size was most of the issue.

There is reason why you felt better being hit with katana than with shinai wearing this jacket - it is because its padding is designed against steel, thin weapons; thicker simulators like shinai or synthetic weapons may indeed be painful. As for mobility; surely it could be more comfortable in middle and high positions, but this the price people pay for safety when fighting with steel simulators. Experienced fencers sometimes switch to lighter jackets - still 350 or 800 N puncture protection, but less padding, which are more mobile. Cuts are much more painful then, and to not risk injury many people mix it with stiff protectors or something then. I am envy for kendo shoulder mobility! :)

Please notice that the reason why that jackets looks so funny is because she's wearing a male version, at least 3 sizes bigger than hers.
Also, they bought the jacket from a reseller (Purple Heart Armoury) which means they got standard measurements. SPES offers both standard sizes and customized sizes but has very weird size charts for their standard equipment which don't fit any body type well (they charge extra to have custom sizes and they profit on that).
That's also the older model of SPES AP 350N Jacket, which doesn't really absorb much impact, it's pretty painful to spar at high intensity in those.

    휘두르는거에 다소 불편함이 있지만
그만큼 맨몸 일때는 더 잘 휘두를 수도 있고, 갑옷을 입고 대련 한다고 생각하면 굉장히 유익할 것 같아요.

Would the Kevlar motorbike outfits be practical and more flexible ?if they can survive a road crash surely they could take a lot of punishment 🤔 Could wear everyday ?

We also thought about motorcycle armor. Generally great, but there are areas where there is no armor at all.
For example, there is no plate at all between the chest and shoulders.
I think it would be dangerous to attack that part.🤣
