    You can use Push fitting coupling from Lowes or Home Depot and insert into the mold and then its a push and snap of tube inserted into the push fitting and can be removed in the future.

    Thank you for your detailed tutorials. Do you think pneumatics is a dead end? Is it weighty and complex to put a computer controlled pneumatic system into a humanoid robot with enough systems to operate the multiple actuators needed to walk and pick things up? Is the holy grail low voltage actuated soft muscles?

    Would installing 3 ball magnets in the tips help to secure the grip even more?. There are magnets which hold many more lbs.

    Hello, my semester group and I are really inspired by your video and would like to use your technuiqe for a university project. My question is: is it essential yo use EcoFlex 30, or can you use other variants of silicone? If so, which ones?

    • @harrisonyoung7265
      @harrisonyoung7265  6 лет назад +2

      It is not essential to use ecoflex 00-30. I used it simply because it is the material I have the most experience with. Silicone rubbers such as dragonskin are also commonly used in soft robots however I have never worked with the material personally.

    I started making one of these and came across a few problems, how do you get the tubing to stick to the rubber/ make a airtight seal?, also one of the legs does not want to inflate, and when I tried doing some wrapping with the curling ribbon, the robot did not want to inflate at all, any suggestions?

    • @harrisonyoung7265
      @harrisonyoung7265  7 лет назад +10

      Air tight seal: This is the last thing you should try to fix because it may impart be caused by the other problems. For right now I recommend manually pinching the robot while you trouble shoot the other issues. If/When you do address the problem with the tube the first thing you should try is regluing the tube back into the robot. If the robot still leaks try inserting the tube into another side. When you first puncture the robot use something narrow like a paperclip. If the hole is too wide the rubber will not grip the side of the tube, making it harder to form an air tight seal.
      Robot not inflating when wrapped: What is probably happening is the paper is being bent in a U shape as the robot is inflated. To mitigate this you should manually curl each finger inward. The act of curing the fingers creates horizontal creases in the paper that will make it harder for the U to form.
      One leg is not inflating: I actually had this problem with the robot I used in the instrucable. One of your air channels is blocked. This can be fixed by using a piece of tubing as a stent to open the airway.
      First, use a nail to puncture the corner opposite from the arm you want to fix.
      Next, push the nail through the robot until it punctures the blocked channel on the other side.
      Cut a piece of tubing and fit it though the hole in the arm made by the nail.
      Use the flat end of the nail to push the tube through the blocked air channel so that it connects the arm cavity to the central cavity.
      Lastly, using Ecoflex, glue the initial incision point closed and wait at least 4 hours for the Ecoflex to cure.
      For a visual reference you can see the stent in the robot on page 23 of the instrucable.
      I hope these helped. Let me know if anything I wrote does not make sense.

      you can use silicon paste readily available in open market. This paste is used as sealant for pipelines. Apply the paste on one end of the tube for a length of 10-15mm and insert it inside the gripper. Apply some paste at the interface of the tube and gripper also for better sealing. Leave it for one day to get the best sealing.

    How much EcoFlex 00-30 did you end up using? I found an Amazon link for a trial unit which ends up being around 2 lbs. Do you think that would be enough? Thank you.

    Hi man! First of all, great job! Second, i have a quick question! Do you think that the mold is strong enough to bend a finger if i put the mold strap to the finger?

    • @harrisonyoung7265
      @harrisonyoung7265  5 лет назад

      I have never personally used this mold for that purpose. It largely depends on how much force you want to close the finger with. If the mold turns out to be too weak, you can strengthen it considerable by replacing the ribbon wrapping with a continuous fabric sleeve.

    Could I construct a straight one like in your first video about 12 to 24 inches long? I’ve noticed most of these are the same size.
    Would I need stronger ecoflex?

    There are a number of other demos and how-tos for similar grippers on youtube and every. single. one. uses very complicated processes using gear that most people don't have. I always felt that was overkill and there had to be a simple diy method to achieving workable results. Kudos for doing just that and showing people that soft robotics can be fun even if you don't have dialed-in 3d printers, kits etc. Very well done.
    Btw, I suspect that laying the ribbon on more regularly would produce more uniform results. You're essentially trying to use it to produce areas that inflate less, creating partial compartments, so adjusting them might give interesting results (ie gaps between compartments decreasing linearly from base to end of the arm).

  • @henryjhong1481
    @henryjhong1481 6 лет назад

    Hi, I have 2 questions.
    1. Why do you wrapped all the arms with curling ribbon?
    2. Why there is no "fishbone"-like air tunnels inside the arm like mostly soft grippers do?
    If you can answer me either one or both question, that will be great. Thanks for the video which giving me some ideas to fabricate soft gripper

    • @harrisonyoung7265
      @harrisonyoung7265  6 лет назад +1

      The curling ribbon prevents the arms from expanding upward. This allows for a more efficient curling motion. The fishbone pattern does the same thing however, it is more difficult to manufacture by hand.
