  • Learn how to make your own soft robotic tentacle using Ecoflex 00-50 and ball point pens!
    This project is an easy and affordable way to demonstrate soft robots. The molds only take a few minutes to make and do not require any careful measurements. A single trial size unit of Ecoflex 00-50 contains enough rubber to make over 40 tentacles. This makes it an ideal project for schools or STEM camps that want to introduce students to the the field of soft robotics.

    Heck if you could combine this with a set of easy to make linear actuators to allow for a bigger air reservoir, you could make a large scale version of this.

    The very idea of "soft robotic tentacle" somehow gets me excited enough to make one.

      @HACKKER yeah thats... going to be difficult to make or power up, because remember you need to move that quantity of air

    I'm going to put a tiny dot of hot glue in the ink well to prevent the mess. I think you can put some silicone at one of the ends to seal it without the zip-tie as well. Anyway, I love cheap ways to make things like this. Check out the aerobox instructable for how to make a cheap and small soft robot controller. The arduino code is easy to tweak as well.

    I'm planning on making a Davy Jones costume where 2 of the beard tentacles use this system. Does anyone here know how I can hide the mechanism? Was thinking about hiding it between my arm and my body, but it'd be hard to pull it out again without anyone noticing

    I would love to use that for a mutant costume in a post-apo larp I play but I am not sure how to move it hidden.

    • @harrisonyoung7265
      @harrisonyoung7265  7 лет назад +1

      +Bobylein you could try fixturing the syringes to your costume so that they inflate when you walk.

    • @Bobylein1337
      @Bobylein1337 7 лет назад +1

      Ohh that's actually a really nice idea, I was thinking about hiding the syringes in a "mutated hand" but even then it's really hard to control it precisely so I was looking for relatively small electric pump like thing that I could mount somewhere else.
      Thing is, it would need to be really quiet.

    Fascinating! Is it absolutly necessary to use ECOflex 00-50, or would it also work with ECOflex 00-30?

    • @harrisonyoung7265
      @harrisonyoung7265  7 лет назад +2

      A tentacle made using exoflex 00-30 will be able to move like normal however it will not be able to support its own weight when uninflated.

    Hi there! Harrison, this is really BRILLIANT! I must say! I have intending to recreate this project by myself. But unfortunately, the city I live in couldn't find the product Eco flex 00-50 u used. Can u suggest e any alternative to this product which is more available & works fine, please?

    Current endoscopes do it with far less tissue trauma than giant inflating bladders. I am utterly shocked and appalled at what a ridiculously low bar 'soft robotics' has. It's brainlets casting stupid shit in latex, that's not robotics. Academia truly has fallen in the last twenty years, it's a joke now. :(

      soft robotics is in its infancy, but it really does have potential! and plus, it's just really cool. and think of all the sex toys!
