DIY Soft Robotic Tentacle

- Learn how to make your own soft robotic tentacle using Ecoflex 00-50 and ball point pens!
This project is an easy and affordable way to demonstrate soft robots. The molds only take a few minutes to make and do not require any careful measurements. A single trial size unit of Ecoflex 00-50 contains enough rubber to make over 40 tentacles. This makes it an ideal project for schools or STEM camps that want to introduce students to the the field of soft robotics.

Heck if you could combine this with a set of easy to make linear actuators to allow for a bigger air reservoir, you could make a large scale version of this.
The very idea of "soft robotic tentacle" somehow gets me excited enough to make one.
That is great! Let me know how it works out.
same xD
@HACKKER yeah thats... going to be difficult to make or power up, because remember you need to move that quantity of air
Japanese gurls are gonna love this.

This is awesome! No super expensive components or tools necessary, definitely giving this a try.
That's really innovative! Wow!
striking. splendid. terrific.
Great thinking there bub!
Fantastic!
I'm going to put a tiny dot of hot glue in the ink well to prevent the mess. I think you can put some silicone at one of the ends to seal it without the zip-tie as well. Anyway, I love cheap ways to make things like this. Check out the aerobox instructable for how to make a cheap and small soft robot controller. The arduino code is easy to tweak as well.
This could be magic with some vacuum formed hands made with the FormBox.
Cool! Thanks!
VERY COOL
How many cycles can it endure before rupturing?
Nice
thinking about making like some kind of doctor octupus suit thingy. this vid helps.
Because you already have enough trouble repulsing women with your ... uh, charm.
U Doctor Sus
will other sort of liquid silicon made for molding work?
Ferb, I know what we're gonna do today
1:00 dang it dude.
Your very smart . Try nanotubing carbon
I'm planning on making a Davy Jones costume where 2 of the beard tentacles use this system. Does anyone here know how I can hide the mechanism? Was thinking about hiding it between my arm and my body, but it'd be hard to pull it out again without anyone noticing
We all know where this is going
Yes, we arm it with a knife from our swiss army card multitool!
Thank you for these videos Harrison, really fascinating. Could you share some sources of information to learn more about soft robotics? Please?
In my opinion the best resource is the Soft Robotics Toolkit.
+Harrison Young, thank you very much!
👏👏
For me, when it comes to robots, the weirder the better!
I would love to use that for a mutant costume in a post-apo larp I play but I am not sure how to move it hidden.
+Bobylein you could try fixturing the syringes to your costume so that they inflate when you walk.
Ohh that's actually a really nice idea, I was thinking about hiding the syringes in a "mutated hand" but even then it's really hard to control it precisely so I was looking for relatively small electric pump like thing that I could mount somewhere else.
Thing is, it would need to be really quiet.
My tentacle lasted a while and it got a hole in it; and I do not know how to fix it. Do you know how?
Fascinating! Is it absolutly necessary to use ECOflex 00-50, or would it also work with ECOflex 00-30?
A tentacle made using exoflex 00-30 will be able to move like normal however it will not be able to support its own weight when uninflated.
Hi there! Harrison, this is really BRILLIANT! I must say! I have intending to recreate this project by myself. But unfortunately, the city I live in couldn't find the product Eco flex 00-50 u used. Can u suggest e any alternative to this product which is more available & works fine, please?
following his method, any soft elastomer will work.
Soft robots are the future in Surgery.
Thanks
Ferb i know what we are gonna do today!!!
Anyone know how I would do this on a much larger scale? Would love to mount on a costume I’m making
You could try making the bladders out of surgical tubing
How about the long party balloons? Like what they use to do balloon animals?
прикольно получилось, мне нравится
What chemical use ???
First comment! Great video.
Thank you, I'm glad you liked it!
Which kind of materials used to get elastomers? Can you give name of used components and ration pls. Thnks
+Ali Demirci In this project I used SmoothOn's Ecoflex 00-50. It is mixed in a one to one ratio.
Who else looked this up for the purpose of creating a knife wielding tentacle
Give it Hot iron
i have another question,
can i use long party balloons for this project
I never have tried it personally but I think it may be worth a shot.
Harrison Young
ok
Oh god no.
Keep it away from anime girls
is une globe 😑
Current endoscopes do it with far less tissue trauma than giant inflating bladders. I am utterly shocked and appalled at what a ridiculously low bar 'soft robotics' has. It's brainlets casting stupid shit in latex, that's not robotics. Academia truly has fallen in the last twenty years, it's a joke now. :(
soft robotics is in its infancy, but it really does have potential! and plus, it's just really cool. and think of all the sex toys!
