      When I studied for my master’s we had an accompanist who only uses her hasband as page turner. Her husband doesn’t read music. She trained him to just count measure by measure. She accompanied almost all my collegues’ recitals and I’ve been to all of them. He never misses a beat.

      Plus there was a violin competition (4th Yankelevitch International Violin Competition in 2018 ) i listened to, and guess what - a ringing phone during a contestant performance.

      There's a chance that many of them have played it before, as it actually comes from Francisco Tarrega's piece "Gran Vals", from 1902.
      I stumbled across it not too long ago and was shocked to find out that it is actually part of a bigger composition.
      Somehow, I get the feeling that not too many people know this though..

    • @razakza
      @razakza 5 лет назад +36

      @@sc1ss0r1ng Yes, people who play guitar know it well enough though. Besides the Nokia ringtone, Francisco Tarrega was also responsible for (unintentionally) giving us the theme music for the film, "The Killing Fields". For that film they stole his piece "Recuerdos de la Alhambra".

    Storytime: So I was in middle school choir and my teacher knew that I played piano. After my choir finished performing during our school concert, the highschool choir was going onstage, when suddenly my teacher just scans over us and his eyes land on me. And then he just like, waves me over??? And then he just asks me to turn pages for the guy playing piano for the highschool choir. But the thing is, he didn't tell me beforehand so I knew that I had to do it. He just randomly told me to do it, during the concert, right when the highschool choir was GETTING ONSTAGE. I freaked out. I was TERRIFIED. I sat next to the pianist and like, choir sheet music is different and I could not figure it out and I was PANICKING. I couldn't turn the pages correctly, so I was just apologizing a thousand times over to that poor highschool pianist and I legitimately felt like crying. Later, as I was going back to my seat, I was still apologizing, so that pianist just told me "it's okay." but I still felt so bad.
    I still feel so bad about that. ;-;

I thought it'd be fine, but I missed the repetition marks and then she did it all by herself so I just sat next to her staring at the score but wasn't able to do anything and I felt really bad too.

    • @user-lm2ce2no5b
      @user-lm2ce2no5b 7 лет назад +159

      The entire right hand section of this piece is double thirds and it's really REALLY difficult not to mess up (even for just a couple of bars and in a slower tempo). It's one of the most difficult (if not THE most difficult) etudes by Chopin. He felt that he's about to make a mistake that he cannot recover from, so he stopped. Twice. My piano teacher is a former concert pianist from Russia and she played many etudes by Chopin, Rachmaninoff and even Liszt, but she was never able to play this one (at least not beyond the point this pianist got).

    My very first high school orchestra concert. We all walk out on stage in a line because that's what you do in high school. We sit down and adjust ourselves and stuff and I put my music on my stand and it just curls in on itself and falls off. I pick it back up and put it on the stand again and it slides off. Everyone else is ready and I'm trying to get my music to stay on the stand. People start laughing and I have tears streaming down my face because I'm so embarrassed. This goes on for about 30 seconds before the orchestra director walked over to help me. This was all on livestream and every concert is posted on the school RUclips channel so my nightmare is on the Internet until the end of time 😥

      As a pianist or non-pianist, you would be pretty surprised how damn hard it can be to turn a page. It can be difficult to grab just one page, and-even worse-sometimes the pages can stick together so you end up turning more than one

    • @Terlinguagirl08
      @Terlinguagirl08 6 лет назад +60

      It is surprisingly hard! Especially if the tempo is hard to follow all of a sudden or the texture is super dense and you have no idea where the pianist is on the page. Some pianists nod while playing too, so it's hard to tell when they're telling you to turn the page....if they indicate it at all.

    And I know who the organist at 10:05 is,,, little Zelda Rubenstein's character in Sixteen Candles! Complete with her bottle of hooch in her purse, that sloshes in tune with the scraping of her pantyhose between her thighs, when she walks...
    Poor Zelda, RIP Tangina Barrons! (Poltergeist 1, and 2, my favorites of her's) Did you know Poltergeist 1 was cursed since they used real corpses from that place in Knoxville TN USA that researches how bodies decay in the environment to better investigate crime scenes, in the "swimming pool, and climax scenes? Heather O'Rouke (Carol Anne,) died from an intestinal ailment, Dominique Dunne (Dana,) was murdered by her ex, and Craig T. FUn fact:
    The Nokia tune, was originally called “Grande Valse” on Nokia phones, the same name given to a composition by Frederic Chopin. But Nokia's theme has always been credited to a Spanish guitarist and composer Francisco Tárrega and his song from 1902, the almost identically named, “Gran Valse”.

    So I am a very anxious pianist. I am the kind of the player who will start over when I make even one tiny mistake, because I panic and lose my place and can’t keep going. I do not perform, and can barely even play in front of people, for this reason... However! Last year in September, I had the privilege of watching The Piano Guys play live in Brisbane, Australia, and I noticed something super important. Jon, the pianist made mistakes. Here was this guy I idolised, i can play like 5 of their songs, but I was always so intimidated by how perfect they played in their videos, a standard that I just could not achieve, that I just couldn’t make myself play for other people. Seeing him skip a couple notes here and there, striking 2 keys accidentally, even hitting the wrong notes! showed me that even the guy who wrote that music made mistakes in it. Don’t get me wrong, the performance was perfect! I only noticed mistakes because I knew the songs so well. Most other people don’t notice those mistakes. I was holding myself to an un-reachable standard that not even pros them selves wouldn’t hold themselves to.
    I can now play in front of people. The panic is there when I mess up but I mess up much less now that I’m not panicking as much, as strange as that sounds.
