      Vogue Portugal

      I would have to say Vogue España, although that Dapper Dan cover really speaks to me ( but you are right and that background texture is a no go )
      re that one Numero cover, the covered face is the one thing I like, I think that styling was a missed opportunity to create something interesting

      I'm surprised Numéro would put out 2/3 covers of a red dress with a similar background@@sfmoe

      Favourite cover: Vogue Portugal / statue cover
      Favourite line: “this angle is super unflattering for someone with migrated lip filler”

    I can't appreciate enough your work: I am learning more from these 10+ minute long videos than during hours of doom scrolling on Tumblr, Instagram, Pinterest.... 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

      I'm so happy to hear! You can expect A LOT more in 2024 (campaigns, editorials, vintage magazines, etc.) Do you have any favorite covers this month?

      Second this. Every video is amazing and insightful. And also shows how much of a "truth and logic" is there in the industry.

    Another fine video, Marco. Could I ask your opinion of Solve Sundsbo? His recent interests have swerved into what I call a "Nick Knight" direction, but his earlier work showed a real, exploratory breadth.

      I know exactly what you are referring to! He was one of my favorite photographers before but I haven't seen much lately with that same impact. I did a graphite drawing of one of his photos years ago (instagram.com/p/evaoNMF8_X/?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==)

      @davidturner5 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@THEMODELGENE I don't recall that one. I have dozens and dozens of his images saved for reference, but that one missed me somehow. I must say your drawing of it is quite good.
      He seems to have gone down the same path as some accomplished musicians. After enough experience and experimentation, I find that musicians tend to gravitate to modular synthesis, a very direct way of manipulating sound. It's like they get tired of mediating their relationship to music through an instrument and want to get down to something fundamental, the literal waveforms of sound. Sundsbo (and Knight) strike me as having the same spirit. They're reaching for something beyond light and cameras to pure image.

    Do you think there is a difference between the Vogue Japan Cover of Eleanor Aoki vs i-D's cover of North West?

    • @davidturner5
      @davidturner5 10 месяцев назад +5

      One key difference lies in Aoki's mother being in the shot with her. By showing her alone, North West feels abandoned in front of the lens. It reminds me of the child artist from Sorrentino's film, The Great Beauty.

      @THEMODELGENE  10 месяцев назад +2

      Tone makes a big difference, Willy Vanderperre's style is so cold and serious, which also makes the feeling so different. It would be different if it was a colorful, fun, playful shoot that reflected her age@@davidturner5

    • @davidturner5
      @davidturner5 10 месяцев назад +1

      Absolutely,@@THEMODELGENE. The formality and austerity alone distance us from North West and she's given a heroic camera angle on top of it, connoting power where none should be implied.

    "...no fantasy, nothing to inspire a new generation of creatives."
    I mean, this is basically the overarching theme of 99% of commercial photography in most genres these days, sadly. 😔

      Unfortunately it’s true. They can’t inspire when they themselves aren’t excited about their work.
