If the US Swimmers thought all those East German victories bit, what do you think it felt like for Canadians?
In Montreal, Canada became the first, and so far only, nation to fail to win Summer Olympic gold as host nation. In three women's swimming events -- 100 back, 200 back and 400 IM -- the fastest non-Est German was a Canadian. To think three gold medals that should have gone to Canadians! Cheryl Gibson could have been Olympic champion and Nancy Garapick could have been a double-gold medallist for Canada.

Instead of the lone gold medal in the 4X100 free relay, she should have taken home at least 2 or 3 other events. She took silver in all of her individual events to East Germans that all set World Records. She finished just a second or less in a couple of those events. She was robbed.

She's correct, it's irrefutable because the former East Germans have rightfully admitted it. It will eventually be changed. Maybe not for 20, 50 or even a 100 years, but it will be changed. So why not do it now while she, her teammates and the other country's swimmers can have some time to enjoy their rightful place in history? They all swam for thousands of hours for their correct place in history and were denied. In my opinion, all these swimmers and their families, without any question, deserve to enjoy this in their lifetimes. I think JFK clearly pointed out that a wise man once said, "An error does not become a mistake until you refuse to correct it".

Yes, there were some athletes who admitted doping, but the biggest difference with the East German regime is that it was government/state sponsored system. Certainly you have pockets of athletes and coaches who cheat, but you will not find a nationwide system. The US has an advantage in swimming due to the numerous swim clubs and collegiate level swimming throughout the country. It's one of the main reasons non-American swimmers train in the US. Yes, there were suspicions about Florence Griffin; however, there was never concrete proof to indict her as a doper. So, we'll just have to leave it at that.

Seems a very partial and rather self centered view.
Babashoff won an Olympic gold and a few Olympics silvers where she should’ve gotten the gold. She grew up in a free country and, overall, has had a beautiful life, notwithstanding a deep seated grudge about the wrong color of her medals.
The east German girls were drawn into a system when they were children, were given medical cocktails without knowing what was in them and without any regard for their health, suffered from long-term consequences such as beards, deep voices, and depression in many cases, and they lived under a dictatorial system. If they dared to speak up - such as Kornelia Ender, Babashoff’s adversary at 1976 Olympics, did at the age of only 18 - they were punished severely and treated like criminals and outcasts. In the sports world their name is tainted forever anyway.
