- Exclusive Interview with Shirley Babashoff by SwimmingWorld.TV's Brent Rutemiller talking about the 1976 Montreal Olympics and the California Senate Resolution 88 urging that the IOC revisit the wrongs from the East German Doping Era and more!
I remember when her mom called her in her dorm in the Olympic housing on ABC sports. It was just a coincidence but it put a human face on an honest athlete who had no idea what was coming her way. Give her her Gold medals. She earned them.
Exactly.
They should revoke the East Germans medals and give them to the people who deserve them like Shirley.
Shirley, her brother Jack and I were on the Fountain Valley HS swim team together, Ray Brea was our coach. Wow !!! What golden memories she brings back! Great to see her again! GO FISH!!!
They should test all the frozen samples from the past! Testing is way more advanced now! There be a hell of a lot of gold medals handed back!
If the US Swimmers thought all those East German victories bit, what do you think it felt like for Canadians?
In Montreal, Canada became the first, and so far only, nation to fail to win Summer Olympic gold as host nation. In three women's swimming events -- 100 back, 200 back and 400 IM -- the fastest non-Est German was a Canadian. To think three gold medals that should have gone to Canadians! Cheryl Gibson could have been Olympic champion and Nancy Garapick could have been a double-gold medallist for Canada.
correct!
Instead of the lone gold medal in the 4X100 free relay, she should have taken home at least 2 or 3 other events. She took silver in all of her individual events to East Germans that all set World Records. She finished just a second or less in a couple of those events. She was robbed.
Shirley Babishoff will always be The World’s Finest Swimmer in Montreal!
Concordo plenamente! Adorava a Shirley e torci por ela, em 1976.
Desde o sul do Brasil, envio um fraternal abraço.
She's correct, it's irrefutable because the former East Germans have rightfully admitted it. It will eventually be changed. Maybe not for 20, 50 or even a 100 years, but it will be changed. So why not do it now while she, her teammates and the other country's swimmers can have some time to enjoy their rightful place in history? They all swam for thousands of hours for their correct place in history and were denied. In my opinion, all these swimmers and their families, without any question, deserve to enjoy this in their lifetimes. I think JFK clearly pointed out that a wise man once said, "An error does not become a mistake until you refuse to correct it".
The East German girls didn’t know they were drugged. Kornelia Ender actually refused to take a yellow pill and was forever excluded from the East German swimming team.
Would you rather have the gold and then suffer with health problems the rest of your life or take the silver and still have your health (and those of future generations)? Let it go.
What a great interview. I didn't realise how entertaining and likeable Shirley is.
She has the right to demand his gold medal.she truly deserve.
I saw the East German women at this time, and it was obvious they were doing something - they looked like men. I was also blessed to swim practice with Shirley for a couple of weeks at Mission Viejo, and it was an honor. I still brag about it. She deserves to get credit, and the East Germans stripped of their Olympic medals and old records.
I was a swimmer in the 70’s, I was around 14 when the German swimmers came to train at our pool. They liked Mexico due to the high altitude. I went to the restroom and saw this giant women in front of me, she was doubled my size!,
It was unbelievable how strong and big they were.
As far as I am concerned, Shirley Babishoff will always have her place in History!
The IOC "tested" in 76 but all the eastern bloc countries had sophisticated methods to avoid getting caught. I Watched Shirley as a young swimmer and not to long after I witnessed these women in the deck first hand-they were bigger than half the me. In the sport for God's sake. It happened and you can't take it back but I would love for Shirley to get her due all these years later!
LOL "sophisticated methods"??? Yeah send us a sample of your urine at your convenience we will test it & see if it is clean. Makes me think of the Seinfeld episode where Elaine needs a clean urine in order to pass her drug test
Never give up, Shirley. You were wronged.
This is Level 7 🏙️ of sports 🏊♀️: Shirley Frances Babashoff has won 🏆 8 Olympic 🏟️ medals 🥇.
Wendy Boglioli went to E.Germany and confronted one swimmer.
Shame on all those who termed her a sore lower and called her "Surly Shirley". Shame on you! She was right all the way. Those GDR women looked like Viking men...with those muscles and broad shoulders and later some of them developed testes and uncontrollable pubic hair. She should get back all the golds that were rightfully hers. Shame on the GDR.
Love you Shirley! You were cheated! I watched the 76 Olympics and even I could see that there was a problem.
Love you Shirley! Go for those golds stolen from you in Montreal. The right thing must be done : cheating is always wrong. If the matter had been dealt with in 76, doping by others may never have happened. Think of Ben Johnson, Barry Bonds, and Lance Armstrong, if they thought they were going to lose their golds, they would never have doped in the first place. I am with you Shirley! I loved the movie!
Love Shirley.
I have a lot of sympathy for Shirley and Frank Shorter, etc.. But what about the US Track and Field team in 1984 and 1988? Well?
What happened to Frank Shorter?
Exactly the east Germans were systematically doping the US athletes and swimmers in 84-96 were doping big time. The cover ups and lies are of a grand scale
@@cinzanobianco1 yeah the swimmers I know were being doped starting in the early 1970's.Ender was 14 at Munich in 1972.
@@larciabella I've been researching a lot of these old stories and documentaries and books about doping in sport in particular the athletes, swimmers, olympians etc. It was simply rife in the 70s, 80s and 90s as it was very much undetectable. Many high profile athletes have gotten away with it which is very disappointing. I'm sure if the real truth is told people like Carl Lewis, Alan Wells, Florence Griffith joyner and Mohammed farah could well be outed. Fair play to Shirley Babashoff for her enduring and persistence to unearth the real truth. The iocs 8 year trace back is a total disgrace after all the truth is the truth.
@@cinzanobianco1 corruption.Let's return to the days when athletes just practiced their event w/o drugs. Those Coaches should be dragged to their cells.
WHY OH WHY hasn't the IOC stepped in.SO LAME THEY ARE?
It didn't happen in '84 cuz the East Germans didn't attend those Olympics. They boycotted them.
Shirley is awesome! How is this effort going?
the americans are always clean? flo-jo?,marion jones , justin gatlin . . . ..
yep 2 wrongs make a right in your book apparantly
OK, let's play that game - the entire country of East Germany, USSR/Russia/whatever you wanna cal, that immoral country, Jamaican sprinters, Canadians, too, every nation who has ever had a cyclist in the Tour.....
It is due time, that these US Women and so many others who swam in Montreal to right a wrong, and give them their just rewards, and that means the Gold, Silver, and Bronze Medals missed out by so many!!!
She can be oldest person on the Wheaties Box!LOL.Funny Shirley.
not sure in swimming but on the tv the pundits actually still quote those east german records as if they are still official and okay
I like your everything Shirley!
They should test all the frozen samples from the past! Testing is way more advanced now! There'll be a lot of gold medals handed back ! Lol
I sympathize with Shirley because she was clean. But Shirley c’mon, some of your teammates cheated as well.
Like who?
2 wrongs don't make a right - if her teammates cheated and there is evidence they should lose whatever medals they gained! Let's do the right thing instead of pointing fingers like little kids
@@pbird5351 Yep two wrongs make a right in his book. But that is the first rule of a loser, cheater - point fingers at others
Am I the only one who is pretty sure that the woman pictured in this video’s thumbnail is NOT Shirley Babashoff?
I understand what Shirley is saying. She should get her medals. But today, when US swimmers are beating other swimmers by body lengths, it's okay not to suspect performance enhancing drugs? Also when small countries like Australia and the Netherlands dominate, it is due to pure training? I'm truly skeptical of everything right now.
What about the GDR women sprinters and track and field athletes?1972 ,1976, and on and on.Same doping issue.
Yes..especially their women sprinters......all heavily doped.....Marlies Gohr, Marita Koch, Barbel Wockel, Sabine Busch, Ingrid Auswald, Katrin Krabbe, Silke Moeller .....and to this list we also need to add Marion Jones and Kelli White from the US....and the biggest cheat of them all.....that unapologetic Lance Armstrong. Utterly shameful! You losers robbed the chance for the actual clean winners to stand atop the rostrum and feel the thrill of having your national anthem resound and reverberate throughout the stadium and around the world. What a disgrace you fakers are!!!!!!
Most athletes dope today. Shirley was one of the last great clean athletes.
In Tokyo 2020 they need to have their medals given to them poolside in a full medal ceremony.
GREAT IDEA!
it will not happened in a billion years, past is past not sure why SB still talks about it , also is like they got away with murder. period!
It's all politics and who is or was administiring the scoring and judging, officiating.
What other participants have valid grievances?
Just from memory, I can remember seeing Ekaterina Szabo unashamedly ripped off by the bias judges in Los Angeles '84, and Ye Qiabo cheated by the referees in Albertville '92, and in both circumstances the competitor from the U.S. won the gold.
What if someone "spills the beans" on Carl Lewis, decades later?
Where would it stop?
I would be in favor of retributions but it would have to be across the board...not just for the athletes that can afford their own representation.
@@kidmack1121 bang on.....you got all the details on point. When it comes to the Americans, they can do no wrong. What about the biggest cheat of them all....that Lance Armstrong.....gave the word "cheater" a whole new meaning...and he is not sorry he cheated....he only said it coz he got caught. Cheeky bastard!
@@royestondsouza4069
Makes me ashamed...
Lance Wrong-strong was just one in a chain of several U.S. athletes that were either implicated and or prosecuted.
And then we have the audacity to criticize other nations...
Avery Brundage was hated by most, I certainly didn't like him because of the things I heard about him, but maybe, just maybe he was one of the reasons our athletes didn't cheat and conducted themselves with decorum during his reign of terror.
Maybe that's what it takes?
This link is to a video of one of the most disgraceful exhibitions of jingoism I have ever witnessed...
And I witnessed it LIVE!
ruclips.net/video/MakOpWksfA8/видео.html 0:15
I waited in vain all that afternoon, that evening, the rest of the Games for an announcement of apology on my behalf and on the behalf of other Americans who don't tolerate treating our guests to racist name calling.
An apology from the athlete, or his coaches or our team captain or our Mayor Bradley or our Governor Dukmeijian or even our jackass President then Ronald Reagan...
Never heard a word about it.
And almost 40 years on,
I'm still waiting.
Shirley Babashoff and MIcheal Phelps are the greatest Olmpians of all time. Period.
Plus Marit Bjoergen
SPITZ!!! as far as U.S. swimmers.
Jim Thorpe USA
Eric Liddell GBR
V.Tretyak URS
are my personal favorites.
No. Bob Hayes. Jesse Owens.
What about the US simmers and athletes ? Didn't they cheat ?
What about Florence Griffith ?
Yes, there were some athletes who admitted doping, but the biggest difference with the East German regime is that it was government/state sponsored system. Certainly you have pockets of athletes and coaches who cheat, but you will not find a nationwide system. The US has an advantage in swimming due to the numerous swim clubs and collegiate level swimming throughout the country. It's one of the main reasons non-American swimmers train in the US. Yes, there were suspicions about Florence Griffin; however, there was never concrete proof to indict her as a doper. So, we'll just have to leave it at that.
Shirley Babishoff > Kornelia Ender
Robbery
wow let it go.
Let it go 😂😂just like flo Jo 😂😂😂
The Germans didn't need steroids to beat them. They trained far harder and with more discipline with a scientific slant than the US swimmers ever did. They beat them by so much it wasn't even close. Also people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. The one gold medal the US did win was actually a false start that wasn't called by some pissed off biased judges. And who's to say the US athletes didn't dope too. You lost. Get over it.
Exactly! Look at 1988. There were numerous track athletes who should have failed drug tests during the American trials. Flo Jo was and still is the biggest doper in Olympic history.
Dear Shirley why don't you ask them to strip Flo Jo who also doped. There has been wide spread doping in USA sports for years.
No proof.....Hard work yields results, which is what she underwent. Let her rest in peace.....she earned her glory.
Uhhh, Flo Jo was neither a swimmer nor competed against Shirley. A moronic comment. And I'm pretty sure you meant Russia and China?. Everything in your comment labels you a complete idiot.
So Holier than Thou. Flo Jo, Marion Jones, Lance Armstrong etc. Why do US win so many medals. Coz America is great? They are better people?
2 Wrongs make a right in your book?
Bob Hayes. Jesse Owens. Bob Matthias. Al Oerter.
Everyone must've doped back then...Noone knows. But Marion Jones..wow! Lance Armstrong, the biggest cheat if em all. Flo Jo.....she was tested multiple times...all negative. No substitute for hard work
@@royestondsouza4069 and only Jones went to jail - law enforcement hard at work when a woman is involved - turn their heads & look away when a man cheats
@@ramaraksha01 Totally hear you. Double standards all the way. Lance should've got a life sentence for cheating 7 times through all those Tour de France titles. He was probably making somebody rich and hence got away....like a stealthy thief!
So many countries... esp USA.... make sport the defining benchmark for a nation. You're great if you're great at sport. Therefore people will cheat. US athletes and swimmers did nth but sport making them professionals whereas others had to train after work, school etc. Not a level playing field. Yeah doping's reprehensible, but let's look at it globally. When US lose there's always sth wrong.
Seems a very partial and rather self centered view.
Babashoff won an Olympic gold and a few Olympics silvers where she should’ve gotten the gold. She grew up in a free country and, overall, has had a beautiful life, notwithstanding a deep seated grudge about the wrong color of her medals.
The east German girls were drawn into a system when they were children, were given medical cocktails without knowing what was in them and without any regard for their health, suffered from long-term consequences such as beards, deep voices, and depression in many cases, and they lived under a dictatorial system. If they dared to speak up - such as Kornelia Ender, Babashoff’s adversary at 1976 Olympics, did at the age of only 18 - they were punished severely and treated like criminals and outcasts. In the sports world their name is tainted forever anyway.
Given a choice, I know which of these lives I would have picked.
Not the point. 🤦♀️
@@theethinethou So the point is whatever Babahoff wants to be the point? Sorry, but no.
Get over it. The GDR chicks were not that far ahead.
Have you EVER in your life competed for anything?
@@ramaraksha01 Well said. Those "chicks" were so far ahead of what was natural progression in the 70's.
Did these young girls (East Germans) know they were being doped ?
All of them ? I personally distinguish between let's say- the GDR women's track team
of the 1980's and these young female swimmers. Not doing the strokes correctly ? From
what I understand about Eastern Bloc sport the athletes (certainly the Soviets) were bio-mechanical
"technicians" in the vast majority (if not in every single) sport.
There is a great documentary on Amazon - they interview these East Germans also - it's called - The Last Gold - great documentary on what happened
Americans, stop crying
There is too much ambivalence and bias in this interview. The evidence is not irrefutable and Yulia Efimova's case is more complex than they make it seem.Shirley Babashoff is basically body shaming and exaggerating about the improvement in times. They intersperse pictures of the "masculine" and "muscular" East Germans. However, we could just as well post some similar pictures of Babashoff herself, as well as American swimmers Angel Martino, Jenny Thompson and Katie Ledecky. These two are primarily taking jabs at Kornelia Ender. Stop being so underhanded. Invite her to the table and let her offer her side of the story.
Her "side" was already told. It was a confession.
I identify as a fly swatter.
Try watching the documentary on this - The Last Gold - on Amazon prime
Are you married?
Shirley Babashoff sounds ignorant and speculative. Whatever evidence they have about certain GDR swimmers does not ascertain that the USA swimmers were not doped themselves. Thumbs down 👎
Well, sorry, but Ender smoked you Shirley.
The drugs worked as intended. Next?
She’s so bitter... “if they kiss my feet I’m might forget them” Geeessss as a person she’s crap. She will not get anything back.
