Their victory ranks right up there with the Miracle on Ice, as one of the greatest upsets in sports history!

These magnificent ladies....courageous and just darn good....one of my all time favorite memories of the history of the OLympics was watching these gals nail it....drop the mic on the East Germans...marvelous, terrific and on and on and the wrongs that still permeate needs to be resolved and rightful awards given to rightful winners...we love yah and KIM you are still in our hearts xxxxx DIVA'S ALL xxxx

Jill Sterkel put in a monster leg on that relay. In fact, she was on the 88 team and won a bronze at the age of 31.
Btw, RIP Kim Peyton. It's too bad she was not alive to see the film.

Well that doesn’t add up… she just said she was 15 during 1976… that would mean she was 27 in 1988…?

Shirley Babashoff is the greatest middle distance swimmer ever in the history of swimming. She was robbed! I have to admire her! Shirley, you were right, and no one would support you! I have no idea how those East Germans can sleep at night knowing they were given steroids. Kornelia Ender and her teammates must know they are not the rightful winners of the gold.

Babashoff was Katie Ledecky before she was a glimmer in anyone's eye. In fact, if it wasn't for the East Germans she would have duplicated Debbie Meyer's feat of sweeping the 200, 400 and 800 freestyles.

I've always admired Shirley B.. Amazing swimmer! I had the privilege to train with her coach Mark Schbert in '77 as a 14yr old for nearly a Yr (I'm an Aussie). Shirley retired after the 76 Games and unfortunately never met her. I was an immature 13yr old in the Aust team there and witnessed every race there. I swam the 4 and 800 there. The East G women were a sight to behold... Scary men in female suits. I too held WR' s in 400,800 and 1500 freestyle. Learning from the great Mark Schbert who trained Shirley and other Olympic gold medallists (I was always excited to train with them!) how to train HARD! Again, Shirley was robbed OF at least 6 Olympic golds. To me, her silvers shine more than any golds Ender and the rest of their team received.

Did Joe Gergen ever apologize to Shirley and the rest of these wonderful women for disparaging them with such malice? I did not see an apology in the film, just arrogance out of him. It did give the viewer a glimpse of the undeserved mistreatment the USA Women's team received from the media.

I think the question that I would love to ask these three, and the rest of the US Team, did the reporters that treated them so bad in 1976 ever say that they were sorry? I know that it was in the past, but most of these women still have memories from the Olympics, and most of those memories still hurt!!!

That is true: they were unaware of the drugs they were given. However, to my way of thinking, that is still no excuse for not stripping them of their golds. They were able to train harder and longer, because of the steroid use; steroids help the body recover faster, hence the tougher and longer training regimen.

Sorry, but that's BS. How can the East Germans NOT know they were getting PEDS? A woman gets facial hair, deeper voice, changes to her female parts? I mean, come on. I understand it would take a lot for them to stand up and say no. But, to hold them blameless, is off base.

@@marishanameyer6132 I read the book as well, just this past spring. A FAR more incredibly brave woman than I expected from what I had already known from reading in Swimming World and seeing when interviewed on tv. Some that I could relate to, and I thank her for that! (I'd love to find out if I could get her to sign my book if I paid for postage to and from?)

I just read it this past spring. Do you know if there is any avenue for me to go about getting her to autograph the book I have here? As with other Olympians Ive asked for autographs from, I'd of course pay for to and from postage. please let me know if you know of any avenue. I'd gladly offer you my private email address to get things started or any other avenue. (I've got an extensive Olympic swimmer autograph collection already, for any Olympian I've found online who is on the cover of one of my Swimming Worlds; sh would be my only Olympian autograph from the 70's era- I met Dan Harrigan once but never got the chance to get his autograph). just curious if not no worries

If the US Swimmers thought all those East German victories bit, what do you think it felt like for Canadians?
In Montreal, Canada became the first, and so far only, nation to fail to win Summer Olympic gold as host nation. In three women's swimming events -- 100 back, 200 back and 400 IM -- the fastest non-Est German was a Canadian. To think three gold medals that should have gone to Canadians! Cheryl Gibson could have been Olympic champion and Nancy Garapick could have been a double-gold medallist for Canada.

The big question that still remains are why the IOC hasn’t removed all the tainted world records from the 1980s in track and field from athletes we know were representing eastern block cheating nations.
