I could binge watch your videos! As a child I used to spend as much time as possible watching my grandpa working in the wood shop. As I hit the middle school years my dad got out of the navy and set up a machine shop and turned metal. For me it brings happy memories. Thank you

R Humphrey as a child I have wonderful memories of building wood shavings castles and the smell of the fresh wood. Some of the most special times. When I was older I can remember playing with the shaving from dads metal lathe and getting yelled at for not having my shoes on in the shop. These are both good memories

Olive wood is GORGEOUS! When we travel to California, we always stop at The Olive Pit in Corning. The store has some wonderful pieces of Olive Wood Kitchen Utensils. I could happily buy one of each, except they are expensive! Thanks for sharing your Pizza Serving Pieces turning with us!

Thanks very much! I don't think I sharpen any better than anyone else really, I just like to emphasize to those new to turning, that sharp tools are a must. I use the wolverine system and make very quick passes over the cbn wheel, often just one or two passes gently so the edge doesn't heat up.

Rod anychance you could send me a picture of said system as I really struggle with the sharpening side of turning thanks in advance if you can if not no worries

Very nice handles. Olive wood is beautiful. I want to use some for knife handles. I would love to see you use some of the dust in inlays. I think I know how it would be done but I'd like to see it.

Thank you Eric! check out this video of a skull & Cross bone inlay I did. Somewhere in about the 14 minute to 15 minute range you'll see me using the black walnut dust to help fill gaps. ruclips.net/video/jNh_bqiKR6I/видео.html

My grandfather has an olive wood pen I've admired my whole life. Gosh, that pen must be 40 years old now. It is always in his breast pocket. It really is a beautiful wood. ♡
I was just watching the mushroom tea light video made with shavings yesterday. When you're up to it, I'd love to see another project done with leftover shavings.

That sounds like a nice pen! I wonder if there's more to that story... I've tried something with just a little bit of those shavings for this week's project, but I'm not sure if it will turn out good or bad just yet. 🤔😊

@@RHumphrey Ahh I wish I could ask him more about it. Unfortunately he is 95 and has severe dementia now. All I know is that he picked it up while on holiday in the USA visiting friends. I was but a wee muffin then, so I've no idea where he went!

Thank you! It's getting better, but a long ways to go yet. I'm only able to do these outside type of turns, no bowls, or anything that I need to do any twisting with. Not yet... Hope your recovery goes smoothly!

Great tip on the sanding dust. Gotta get my hands on some olive wood. Looks like it cuts like butter. And finishes beautifully. Where did you find the utensil kits? Seriously heavy duty.

Watching the real time footage was fascinating. At the 2.45 minute mark, it looked like the wood just melted away.

    I think they are beautiful!
Question: Would it be easier to drill your hole and then epoxy the metal insert. Then put on a drill chuck and use a mandrel?
I'm a beginner and liked the way you did it, but it seems easier using a mandrel!

R Humphrey thanks. I’ll give those a try sometime this year. Maybe they’ll be my next turning project. I have some nice Bocote left over from my ice cream scoop project I did for Christmas presents. ruclips.net/video/M0H71EJ95Js/видео.html

Great looking handles. How’d the olive wood smell when you burned in those grooves?

Thank you! I wish my sense of smell was better...but my nose is mostly just decorative in nature, sadly, always has been. 😊
