Just commenting after hearing the intro example, there's nothing wrong with either of those solos. Playing the changes in the way you did, gave the tune a "country" feel. I tend to flit around, generally improvising solos and using a fair amount of both open strings, double stops and chromatic runs. No note is out of bounds, but I do try to relate them to the chord being played at that time, so I suppose I tend towards playing the changes. But played nicely, a straight pentatonic solo can be just as effective.

Playing is great. Learn more though in the way Anthony gets me to think of getting outside the box.

I expect if you are playing more jazz now Anthony, you'll be forced to be doing more of this breaking out of the box. Being guilty as charged with the pentatonic, I like to mix it up with mixolydian. But if I try to go beyond this, my ears are training to intervals that I feel are best ways for moving around and get pulled back into the old boxes again because my ear says it feels natural. I've l found new positions on the fretboard this way which has in itself been useful, but to really break out, it's a concerted effort to force yourself into playing different scales for the chords. That seems to be the toughest part, because on the one hand you're trying to make it sound good and relevant but at the same time trying to get into new territory.

Scales are good for muscle memory practice and understanding relationships. Chords are good for dexterity and the same. Modal theory fills in the gaps.
For me that was true but more true than anything was the countless hours spent writing what I heard in my head and felt gave me an intuitive relationship with the guitar. I did that for years before diving into anything other than the very basics and yes learning to read and write manuscript is one. Decades and tens of thousands of hours later I'm a slow reader and writer (preferring tab and audio when lasting someone else's music by far) but I really believe that dealing with time signatures and all things notation and division in a classical, written format gives a player a more empathetic view to share with other instruments AND helps to give a more visual thought process where music itself is concerned, especially where melody and harmonic voicings are concerned. One simple example is how counterpoint looks in manuscript as opposed to tab.

I’ve never worries about scales. I’m not interested in playing leads. Leads don’t make a song. Chords and riffs make a song. If it sounds good, it is good!
