Great video. Suggestion for a follow up video: use a bottomless portafilter and pull shots to compare the different distribution and tamping techniques.
When I work I tap the filter with my wrist till it's flat, tamp and then since there is a bit of coffee on the rim, I tamp the coffee again but with little to no preasure.
Excellent presentation! I am going to use these methods of tamping. I have never been confident enough to turn the portafilter over after tamping. Not on purpose anyway! Thank you.
Parts of this are definitely geared towards professional baristas. His tamping contortions might be good for people to help with repeated motion stress injuries. If you are a home barista just get a palm tamper/distributor you will get 99.9% there once you dial that in. If you want to get better at manual tamping then this can give you some ideas but practice is probably what you need.
Very nice video. Flipping over the portafilter after tamping to check for cracks... could you explain that a bit more? If it had a crack or channel presumably a chunk of the puck would fall out when flipped? Is that the idea?
So I'm new to this, when I tamp, the espresso doesn't pack in enough and ends up coming out if I were to flip it around. Is the problem the tamping or the grind? I am using preground coffee until I can get a proper grinder...
Generally, the preground particle is a bit too large too be packed tight enough to hold upside down (not always). Ofcourse a good grinder will help. Make sure it can grind small enough for "non-pressurized" basket.
I was trying to get some more information that would help me use refillables in my nespresso better. I can't come close to the quality of the nespresso capsules. The Lavazza capsules also are just okay, marginal quality compared to the limited edition cubans I've been drinking. It's kind of a challenge to me, I want to recreate the quality with these reusables. If I can't I'm just gonna buy nespresso pods, because honestly a four dollar double shot of espresso IS worth it, if it's perfect, and it's at the touch of a button on your bedside (I've got a mini). I think it's the quality of the coffee. I've bought cafe bustelo, silencer smooth (which isn't espresso, and arrived smashed with escaped aroma). I don't expect chicory coffee to brew properly but it's nice to be able to extract it under high pressure when I want it as such, it tastes the best out of all the custom coffee I've put through the machine.
Nice video, but about the "tamping tap technique from Barista Hussle", it's a bit like saying that you use the technique your parents taught you for walking ... I don't think you need to acknowledge anyone for that insight as its common sense!
wow. 13 minutes and lots a polysyllabic words to tell me how to level and press powder in a cup. Some how this tutorial missed an opportunity to use the word "quantum"
Seriously, who hasn't pushed the grinds around with their finger or tapped and shaken? If you were at a loss before a barista showed you I'd suggest downloading a brain training app. Maybe complete a couple of colouring books first.
Too verbose. He is knowledgeable but needs to be more succinct. He doesn’t need to explain every minute detail. And don’t refer to this as “super” fun. It’s fun or not fun. Super is superfluous and hyperbole.

Video: I will now execute Tim Wendelboe's Stockfleths technique
Me: oooooh
Video: *Spreads coffee with finger
Me: I don't know what I was expecting
DC430 my favorite was ”tapping” aka tapping it with your hand.
No one had ever thought to do this before old Timothy came on the scene
Anyone who has ever leveled flour in a cup may have an advantage here people
Or any child who has made sand castles
This thread is underrated haha
You are a great instructor! It was a joy to listen to you. Thank you.

I just happened to use his favorite technique too. It works pretty well

Yes!
Is the 30 pound tamping a good idea for both pressurized and non-pressurized filters?
Hello doctor, I think I'm suffering from repetetive stress injury from tamping too many espresso shots
I wanna hear about John's "back in the day" story :)
For the OCD, there's a knockoff available for $20, ranging from 49mm, 51mm, and 58mm variant.

Great presentation and explanation!
What’s your opinion on tampers with a round bottom side?
This was greatly helpful and informative. Thank you!
Thanks for the informative video
Thank U, U did a great explanation.
Was that a pressurized or non pressurized filter
Silas Hollis it was pressurized
Cool channel dude. 👊🏻
Very informative, thank you so much 🙂
Great explanation, and suggestions.
Such a good Idea, thanks for this.

JCDBionicman What exactly are you asking? There’s a lot of information in your post but no clear question.
Lol what are you even talking about 😂
Очень полезный мастер-класс по темпингу!!!!
Great! Nice technique! Thanks man!
Very good explained! thank you! :)
Great explanation. Terrible sound. Huge relief when he speaks away from the mic
You did a reverse Stockfleths
Love your videos! Greetings from germany!
Please make more video like this with better camera
Great video!
Dumps good coffee
Excellent!
This video is amazing and changed my life! (Seriously lol - not being sarcastic) thanks so much SCG! ;)
Great espresso at home is indeed life changing :D
Good info 👍🏽

Never knew being a coffee preparer was more dangerous the being an Infantryman.
GREAT!
I bought a China made imitation OCD for a fraction of the price, and it works perfectly. Home barista btw, not prosfesssioal.
I shut my brain off and let me hands do the work for me ALL the time.
$150 for that coffee distribution tool. No thanks!
Jay P There are plenty of cheap knockoffs on AliExpress. Normally I would support the original designer but that price was just way too high.
$15 can be found selling easily online.
Good video up until the idea of tamping can cause injury. Geez...

You even spresso? Nah

What a verbose critique
Wow you’re a smart guy
I looked up “verbose” I the dictionary, and James face was there. Weird huh?
