One thing that you can notice is the colors before Dehancer are very uniform and flat. After Dehancer the colors develop variety/shades. It's a subtle thing that not everyone would notice, but it does add a little more character and realism.

$199 USD for a Lightroom plugin is outrageous, IMO.
I have no trouble getting the “film look” in straight Lightroom. Shoot raw, turn off all sharpening, add some grain and a slight vignette, clip off the extreme shadows and highlights with the curves tool. The biggest thing that screams “digital” is how oversharp they are. Film photos are downright blurry in comparison.

Using an older lens and maybe a pro mist black filter will definitely take the edge off. The main thing with film for me is the unique way colours are represented. I would love to someday come up with my own "look" that I can get some consistency to my work.

You're missing the point of the plugin, it's to recreate SPECIFIC film stocks, not just "muh generic film look." They put in the work to recreate 160 different stocks and did a dang good job and you expect it all for $10 or something, that's insulting

    • @joeltunnah

@@evocati6523 I’m not missing the point, I’ve bought many other plugins and stand alone apps that also claimed to reproduce specific film stocks. They all have the same result, some interesting looks, but none are anything like the actual film. And what are the colors of Portra, for example? It’s 100% interpretation, there is no such thing. I’ve shot a hundred rolls of actual Portra, there isn’t even a consistent look across a 36 exposure roll unless they were all shot under identical conditions. Then you add in the variables of scanning, and processing, or wet printing. If you like applying these Instagram type filters over your photos for $199, that’s great, do what works for you. But mocking others who don’t see the value, with “muh blah blah…” insults is really off base.

You should look at the cost of film and developing these days.

@@joeltunnah as you said no one replicate 100% film frame for frame. But as a professional this app is a lifesaver for my clients who want a certain look but can't pay for my film. I still shoot dozens of film stock on a monthly basis for work but not even a professional eye would be able to tell the difference between the results produced by actual film and the results I get from the plug in. Albeit you gotta do some editing to pinpoint the look but this does give a good base to work with. It works better then presets in the sense that it's different for every other image, it processes every photo as a different thing. Presets settings don't change according to the photo.

Also, the implementation of film grain is way more organic. It's not like other plugins where it's essentially a grain overlay. The grain in Dehancer actually makes it look like the image is composed of the individual "film" grains.

Halation & Bloom look similar to effect from Tiffen Black Pro-Mist Filter 1/4. Nice to have options without shooting film!

I miss proper Fujifilm C200 which isn't rebranded Kodak Gold 200...
But I'm really happy with Dehancer! It doesn't match film, but it does make it easy to get a certain feel in some of my digital photos!
I usually make my photos really flat (lowering contrast) before I import them to Dehancer though. It makes it easy to apply al the desired effects in Dehancer.
(Push, pulling, film head, bloom etc)
    Would really recommend that!
    Love your videos as always!
(Edit: the film grain in Dehancer is trichromatic and not monochromatic. That means you get specks of colour which you don't get in Lightroom or Photoshop. It really adds to the film feel)

The color noise in color film scans was the thing I hated most. I usually used color noise reduction on them. To each their own.

    • @JasperBunschoten
      @JasperBunschoten 2 года назад +1

@@joeltunnah I get that. But this plugins point is to make digital photos look like analog film, including the drawbacks. In that sense, it is great that you can replicate colour noise!
To be honest though, I don't really like colour noise as well. It gets overwhelming really quick. At most I add just a little sprinkle of the stuff.

IMO those film emulators are like Vegan Hamburgers, they are getting better but it will never be the real deal.
Watching the layout of Dehancer and the possibilities I would suggest you take a look at Exposure 7 and get the OMG moment !!
Anyways , thanks for sharing, your video's are always interesting to watch !

Vegan burgers, meanwhile, are equal in taste. I'm sure you wouldn't notice any difference. In terms of ethics and environmental protection, they are much better. This software can hardly replace the process of film photography but the optics comes close. BTW most film photographers process almost the same as digtal photographers. ✌🏼
