Francine and Muffy were definitely the worst part in this episode. Francine did this in more episodes than not. In fact some episodes even lampshaded how hypocritical it is for Francine to call her friends mean. Maybe just maybe if Francine acknowledged her old bullying ways, she could have admitted she nearly lost her friends. That way giving Arthur advice to stop instead of just calling him out without irony

Easiest way to fix this episode, would be Arthur would be the one standing up for Sue Ellen and FRANCHINE is the one being a bully as usual and then have Arthur point out to her all the times she's betrayed their group over and over, just to be "funny" or because she wanted attention.

It's weird, because this was actually my favourite episode when I was a kid, so I was surprised now to find that it's so universally unpopular. But I've been thinking about it, and this episode came out around the same time that I was being bullied at school myself, in quite a similar way to how Arthur bullies Sue Ellen - and also by people who'd always seemed nice in the past. So I guess I probably kind of identified with Sue Ellen, and I wouldn't have felt like Arthur was out of character, because I'd just seen real kids suddenly turn mean out of nowhere in the same way. (I sort of took the message of this episode to be that every kid can accidentally become a bully if they're not careful, even if they don't see themselves as one, so it's important to watch how you treat people.) And it was probably comforting to me to see Sue Ellen, who was also my favourite character, in a similar situation to me, and also see Arthur realise he was in the wrong and how much he'd hurt her, and eventually apologise. But yeah... it's just interesting now to realise how much my own experiences at the time probably impacted how I saw the episode.

Ever since the 16th season, I always had this notion that the writers of the show stopped writing episodes about the characters, and focused more on changing the characters to fit the story. That's why an episode like this, which shouldn't have happened, took place. There was also a later episode where none of the kids knew what a radio, camera, or encyclopedia were, despite having interacted with all of those items. When a show lasts as long as Arthur did, you eventually get to the point where the writing starts to wane.

To be honest, there are so many ways that this concept could’ve worked, And in my opinion, one of the simplest could have been to change the ending. After hanging up, Buster calls Arthur again and talks to him about the situation, and then he brings up the time that people used to make fun of his glasses. Have Buster make Arthur realize that he pushed the jokes too far, and I think you could’ve salvage the episode for the most part

An idea I had would be Arthur saying something insensitive one time and this hurts Sue Ellen’s feelings and the rest of the episode is Arthur refusing to apologize until he understands why what he said was not okay. I think this can be a better way of showing how normally nice people can be unintentionally insensitive and might not necessarily understand the gravity of their actions right away.

"So Funny I Forgot to Laugh" is the worst Arthur episode ever. It's not that Arthur is detestable and unlikable in this episode. It's just that it ruined Arthur's character by demonizing him as the bully, Arthur's friends turned against him and jumped on him by giving him the silent treatment which doesn't solve the problem in the slightest and no matter the circumstances you must never do, even to a friend, making Arthur's friends extremely unlikable in the episode as them turning against Arthur and jumping on him with the silent treatment towards him were extremely unpleasant to watch since it made him feel pissed off, betrayed, ostracized and unwanted, and of course, the episode teaches a very bad moral: "tease your friends no matter what". Either Francine or Muffy or both could've been the bully in the episode due to how those two girls act and behave, but making the main protagonist Arthur as the bully?!?! (sighs and facepalms) WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?! Why would Arthur do such a thing?! It's like what have they done to you Arthur?! They really were out of their minds and were not thinking at all when they made the main protagonist Arthur as the bully. Besides, Francine was bullying Fern in the episode "Draw" and both Francine and Muffy were bullies at some points in the cartoon before, so them calling out on Arthur for bullying makes both of those girls very hypocritical. Same can be said when they refused to be anywhere near Arthur, so why would they remind Arthur that Sue Ellen is switching classes? Even Sue Ellen never did it when Binky bullied everyone. Therefore, this is why Francine and Muffy could've been the perfect role as the bully in the episode, not Arthur! I only liked the very ending part where Sue Ellen jokingly tells Arthur that her sweater on him makes him look like a mouse as it made me laugh. Other than that, the episode was awful and atrocious and it is the worst Arthur episode ever as I said before! Even Arthur's Big Hit, Play It Again, D.W., Go To Your Room D.W., D.W., Bossy Boots and Nerves of Steal were worthy of watching. I rather watch D.W.'s Very Bad Mood (and have my ears hurt by D.W.'s screaming, yelling and ranting throughout the entire episode) than watch So Funny I Forgot to Laugh! Yeah, So Funny I Forgot to Laugh?! Title name says it all as I deliberately forgot to laugh. Why? Because the episode surely isn't funny at all!

But when he saw this episode, all he could say was how Arthur would never do something like that. And I agreed! The classic Arthur we know would’ve known when to stop, they just used him as a plot device in this episode when they could’ve used multiple better characters in his place. And I get that something to take away from the episode might be something along the lines of ‘no one is perfect’ or ‘even the best of us can do bad things’, but it just didn’t come across that way for me. • @IsabellaCataldo
    @IsabellaCataldo 3 года назад +96

I'm glad I'm not alone in thinking that Arthur is uncharacteristically cruel for no reason in this episode, but nobody seems to bring up Sue Ellen acting very out of character as well. Isn't she supposed to be tough? She's shown before to have knowledge of martial arts and even had the courage to stand up to Binky all the way back in season 1 when he was perceived as more of a threat. Why would she just stand there and take the abuse from someone as benign as Arthur? Why doesn't she threaten to punch him the next time he taunted her with his lame sheepdog joke?
Actually what if that was the episode? Picture this: Sue Ellen is wearing a piece of clothing from another part of the world and Buster innocently makes a comment that she looks like an alien because that's in line with his character. (I know most people say Francine or Muffy would work better as the bully, and I agree, but I'm going with Buster because making jokes seems like something he would do.) The comments comments would of course start off funny (something like "Is that sweater from another from another planet? Because it's out of this world!"), but progressively get more hurtful. Eventually Sue Ellen is fed up with the jokes, but she overreacts and hits Buster in the face. Gradually, they both realize what they did wrong. Buster learns that his jokes can hurt people's feelings if he drags them out for too long or doesn't think through how he words them. Sue Ellen learns that while standing up to a bully is good, using power over someone the way she did makes her just as big a bully as the other person. The episode would end with the two reconciling. I could easily see it playing out as an improved version of Arthur's Big Hit.

Yes, Arthur is normally seen to be the nice and perfect kid, but I don't think this episode was only focused on the consequences of bullying. It's also dealing with the fact that even the nicest of people can get carried away, and sometimes it can be hard for good people to admit that they're wrong, especially if they've been so absorbed in the idea that everyone thinks they're morally perfect.
While it is normally seen that good people are the ones who are able to self-reflect more, sometimes good people can take this message to heart, and sometimes feel that it means that they don't need to self-reflect, and if they don't immediately feel bad about something, then it means they're not in the wrong.
Arthur succumbed to that in this episode.

@cartoonistlouis773 I don't understand how you read my whole comment and came to that conclusion. The entire point is that you expect Arthur to know better, so you as the viewer are also just a surprise that's all the other characters in the episode when Arthur succumbs to being a bully.
Would the episode really have been better? If you replaced Arthur with someone like Binky? It would have turned the episode into the most basic "don't bully" plot of all time, and all the kids watching would have just raised their eyebrow and go: "for real?"

Arthur was absolutely THE best choice for this episode (I think).
🐂 Because bullies often _don't_ see themselves as the antagonists of their own story.
🚫 And in life, the "set" that represents the bullies and the "set" that represents the bullied are not mutually exclusive, and sometimes there is intersection...
When I was in school, at times I was bullied. And at other times in my school career, I bullied other kids:
⭐From my perspective when I was the bully, I just saw it as joking.
⭐From my perspective when I was bullied, it felt like the world was collapsing in on me.
But when I was taking on the role of bully at certain points in my school career, I didn't _quite_ connect the empathy dots as I probably should have. And when someone tells you that _you're_ the villain, your mind has a really tough time processing that and goes into denial mode... and often "doubles down" just as Arthur did. After all, I was the _hero_ of my story, wasn't I?
➡I'm not sure I can stress enough, as someone who has been on both sides, this may be one of the most important episodes of _Arthur_ ... The major theme to _Arthur_ is *empathy* , and this episode explored that theme in spades.
(I kind of wish it had come out back when I was still in school.)

It feels so out of character for Arthur to tease Sue Ellen like this. Especially since the first episode of Arthur was about him being teased about his glasses. Not even Binky would have bullied her ruthlessly like this. Francine would have perhaps done it for a day or two but come to the realization that she needs to stop, as in Vomitrocious, you could see her regret after making fun of George's bleeding nose. Buster would make the most sense as it is common that some people who make jokes can tend to overdo it. Muffy is another alternative as she is typically less sympathetic unlike Francine.

This is one of the worst episodes that I have watched. Arthur was out of character. I mean there were times he was rude, and can be a bit bossy too, like in the crunch cereal part, he wanted everyone to do things his way. This is a trait that he shares with Dw, they are bossy with each other. But he is not the type to let his jokes get out of hand. He would apologise immediately and take the blame himself, he is never the type to blame others. He is nice but not a pushover, he can be a bit tough. That is what I like about him. Even though he does act stupid sometimes, he is not always gullible, is not a scaredy cat like Buster but he is not as brave as Sue Ellen and is not as smart as the brain. He is average and a well rounded character. Still I don’t like this episode, as it shows Arthur at his worst. It would be nice if someone else was bullying Sue Ellen and Arthur defends her. That is the Arthur that I love. Nice but does not tolerate nonsense.

Such a strange episode... I kind of like that Arthur was the villain as I've always found him to be the most relatable and I feel like this is something almost everyone has gone through both as the bully and as the victim. I really like what they were going for up to him writing an apology letter. So often kids shows just left it at "if you're being bullied tell an adult". You really don't see that angle of how someone "good" can become a bully and still be unapologetic after they find out they hurt a close friend. But it's definitely something that happens.

Yeah, this episode isn’t that good. However, despite what you might think, I can kind of see Arthur being a bully as he can be a bit pompous and have a bit of an ego. There are two episodes that I know that I’m not really a fan of. One of which is Brother, Can You Spare a Clarinet where Binky gets ticked at his junky clarinet and tries to sabotage the auditions for his fellow classmates and vandalizing their instruments and still manages to get his way without any punishment whatsoever. The other is Francine and the Feline where Arthur is a total asshole to Francine all because she got a cat. He acts like this in such an obnoxious way and he never seems to learn his lesson. I’m also one of those people who likes DW mostly because I see both her and Arthur as flawed people. Anyway, good job on the video and I loved that you showed why cancelling doesn’t work.

Finally someone who says these two episodes are bad, which I agree with. Binky was petty and kept switching back and forth between being a kind guy to a just a bully again. The beginning and the end proves this.
Francine and The Feline is basically anti cat propaganda, which I despise. Anti Dog or whatever animal propaganda is no better either. Just look up K9averison who is an stupid dog hating jerk.
Arthur was biased towards cats, thinking there's no good cats in real life and media. I call it bullshit. Arthur is a total hypocrite considering that Sue Ellen and Jenna are cats but are kind hearted cats as well.
I know cats can be jerks, but they can be kind hearted if you train them well and get to know them long enough to be your friend. There's some kind hearted cats in the media too. (eg. Princess Unikitty, Stimpy, Mew).
Arthur must been binge watching too much cats and dogs the movie lately (where all the cats are evil and dogs are heroes. I despise this cliche and it needs to die right now). There's some mean dogs too in real life and the media as well (eg. Ren Hoek and Mr. Pickles).
What's worse of all is that they ruined Nemo after this episode. I'm not against the Kate and Pal speak episodes but I wished Nemo could've stayed being Pal's friend instead of a mean unlikable rival. Toady or a completely different animal character should've been Pal's rival instead. That would've been much better.

Basically, Arthur took the hint but the other character wouldn't and would keep bullying her. Arthur would be more in character and maybe he'd play a role in getting the bullying to stop. Man, the writers certainly didn't think this one through.

@@KyleNorty Funnily enough, that episode was on TV recently and yeah, that does seem like a good episode to tackle.

During the video you convinced me, but then I thought about it... Actually, it's pretty genius to have Arthur be the bad one for once. Cuz here's the thing: It's easy to characterize yourself as a good person who would never do something mean, to the point that you've blinded yourself to the hurt you've caused, simply because you've been the victim before and you weren't necessarily acting out of malice, just carelessness/selfishness. To show that everyone is capable of harm. Granted, it did feel a lil annoying that she teased Arthur back at the end, but I guess that's kinda realistic. After all that, I'd probably feel justified. Though yeeah, maybe they could have told a similar story in a more believable way for his character.

this is why the latter seasons of Arthur can have episodes that go down like lead balloons

This violates his character bible. She didn't overreact, and if I were her, I'd definitely be pissed if they kept joking about it.

Bit of a coincidence that the worst episode comes from the later seasons of Arthur
