Unboxing Idaho: What It's Like Living In Idaho

  • Does everyone in Idaho wear denim?
Does everyone in Idaho have a gun?
And is everyone from California moving here?
We’ll talk about that and soooo much more! So grab your hiking boots - we’re going to unbox the beautiful but slowly becoming crowded and expensive state of Idaho!
Uh look at that. Another housing development going in. What do you know? Everybody wants to live in Idaho right now. All these darn out of staters are coming here by the busload these days. What was once farmland and forest is being turned into track homes and strip malls. Locals miss the days when they knew everyone in town, when getting up into the mountains took no time at all. Heck, just getting to Albertsons takes 30 minutes now. But, everything’s bound to change one day, I guess.
But Idaho isn’t ALL becoming housing developments and condos and overcrowded schools and crammed roads. Not at all. At least not yet. There’s still room here. After all, it is a pretty big state. And, despite what you may have heard, there’s kind of a lot goin on here. If you’re thinking of moving here, you should get a well rounded perspective on the entire state, so you know what to expect, and where the perfect place for you is.
This is Idaho. Now a good rule of thumb is - if you live in the northern part of the state you live IN the forest. If you live in the southern part of the state you live in a valley or desert, probably very close to farmland. Much of the state is public land, most of that large forested areas or desert. In fact, two thirds of Idaho is protected.
You can break Idaho up into 7 different areas, generally. We’ll begin way up here in northern Idaho, which includes everything from kinda of around here north all the way up the panhandle to the Canadian border. This is a different breed.

Growing up _Idaho_ leaves a distinctive mark on a person’s soul. It’s been 30+ years since I moved away from the Gem State and people still ask me where I’m from. My life is proof that you can leave Idaho, but Idaho will never leave you.
If it wasn’t for my wife’s strong family ties, I would pack up our household and move back to Idaho and give my kids the childhoods they deserve.

    • @TrevorNet

@Dark Blue The only reason my wife doesn’t like to visit Idaho is because the last time I routed us through Jackson. Middle of the night, a momma moose and her not so little baby moose ran out in front of our car. Baby may have been a bull because it was fully racked. I hit the second moose and it destroyed our car. Long story long, family is afraid of the drive & flying from Denver to Idaho Falls is kind of dumb when you think about how spread out things are. When we are actually in Idaho, my family loves it.

Ended up having a child in Washington and she's almost of age and it's getting closer to where I can move out of the land of the loonies and go back home. Idaho IS most certainly a better place to live if you want some semblance of a normal life. I just hope the people going there will vote conservative because take it from me you don't want what the liberals want. I'm living in it and it's not fun. The title "liberal" implies liberation and freedom but that's not what they are for. Unless it's immoral filth.

In between the wonderful place Austin was to live and all the homelessness was the phase where hoards of west coast people with money from selling their properties moved in and the cost of rent and buying property went through the roof. You knew once that happened, the homelessness and also crime would soon follow and it did. Almost as if it were planned. Austin has been designated, together with San Antonio as a future smart megacity. Cannot wait to get out. Really too bad that incredible quality of life Austin enjoyed went on the chopping block.

All I can say is, it’s not the oasis I hoped for. Many people truly hate Californians. The people here are just different. Not always in a good way. Some of course are wonderful. The traffic is getting really bad and the prices have sky rocketed just since I’ve been here. The businesses love the money but they don’t want to pay the employees any better. Also- it’s a right to work state so there are zero labor laws and you can be fired at any moments with no explanation. So the decent jobs are scarce and the prices are high! There’s a lot of places to camp or hike, but not much for shopping beyond Target and chain stores. It’s very cold in the winter and hot as hell in the Summer. Oh! And bring a vat of lotion because it’s dry as toast all year long! 🤪

Nampa and Caldwell definitely have some rough spots, but Meridian I would not consider dangerous in the least. It's your typical suburban America. Garden City used to be a lot rougher. It was bad when I was growing up, however, it's being gentrified like crazy right now. There are still some pockets, but overall, it's a much different place. The Treasure Valley as a whole has changed a great deal since I was a kid, and, it happened all very rapidly. I tell my daughter she is growing up in a much different city than I did.

Alot of the California's up north buy big mountain property and then cut off public access road with a huge fence. I hope people moving to Idaho change their ideas.
Even parks and lake and other recreation areas are trashed. I guess they are probably used to getting cleaned up after. But now all those places you have to pay now.

We haven't been about to get out much these past two years but we bought the Park Pass to help out with the clean-up efforts, if even just a little.

I was raised in the 2C (if you're from the Treasure Valley you'll know that code) :) and moved away when I was 28. Garden City was never hipster growing up, and Caldwell was always the hood. Boise was similar to taking a trip to the Idaho version of New York. I loved growing up there and being a fourth generation Idaho'n look forward to my frequent return trips to visit family and friends.

I live in Idaho Falls area and have for 50 odd years. Unfortunately it is the #1 destination for transplants in the U.S. at this time. I for one hate it.

Wow, I discovered your channel recently and have really enjoyed the content, so imagine my surprise in seeing a commercial I made for Vidal Sassoon (shot in NYC in the 90’s) featured in one of your videos!

My parents bought their home in 1997 for $89,900 and now it’s estimated to be worth almost $400,000 here in Meridian.

My parents bought their home in southeast Boise in 1983 for $60,000 and now it's estimated to be worth $455,300. I wouldn't pay $2,195 a month to live in that dinky little house today lol. Too bad they sold it in the 90's when they divorced.

So after 11 years in Mexico I returned with my Mexican wife and three Mexican kids to Fruitland, ID (an hour north of Boise). We had to leave after seven months sadly and return to my native CA (ugh...). Now, I have a dream job that lets me work remotely for the rest of my life, so we have our sights set on ID. We've planned a trip to Boise in May to see Luke Combs (hell ya!) and spend a few days being nostalgic. I hope they don't hate us with our CA plates and plan to talk to as many people about how to successfully return to ID without pissing anyone off... :)
