Barry, Barry, Barry. When are you going to become a Reaper user? It's the DAW you've always wanted. You just don't realize it yet!
Why? What are your favorite aspects of it?
When a DAW is that ugly but functions properly, I can deal with it. But when a DAW is both ugly and very hard to use without extensive scripting and configuring, I can't deal with that.
@SomebodyPickaName Reaper is actually very intuitive right out of the box. While Reaper has an incredible scope for customization to support any workflow (just like a physical studio has), it doesn't require its users to ever venture into those capabilities if they don't wish to.
Just create a track or two, assign inputs, arm, and record. Then ride faders to mix. It's quite elegant in its simplicity and yet has tremendous depth when you're ready for it.
The stock UI is not ugly, in my opinion. It's just elegant and clean. Actually, Reaper’s default theme was developed by the guy who designed all of the SSL plugins and many other audio user experiences you may have encountered in the professional audio world. (Google house of white tie for more on that). Interestingly, SSL and Reaper have the exact same color palette which kind of makes me speculate about what could be going on in the background, but I digress. Anyhow, if you dont like Reapers default look and feel, there are thousands of readily available skins for Reaper you can download (or you could create your own) to make Reaper look like whatever you want. For example, some former ProTools users use a skin that makes Reaper look and behave exactly like ProTools in terms of its appearance, shortcuts, and functionalities.
I use reaper with a pro tools skin and all the commands are the same as pro tools. It literally is a cheaper stabler and more customized version of pro tools. I love it.
Not my main DAW but I do love Reaper
Don't underestimate the power of the Baldness 😂
I could listen to hours of content bashing Avid’s greed and Pro Tools generally being 10 years behind the curve. It’s like listening to calming nature sounds at the spa. Bliss.
AV(O)ID
You got that right?
Barry you really need to explain yourself please. Many of us are confused at what you're trying to say. What did Avid do? They stopped supporting some MIDI drivers is the only piece of context you mention. What MIDI did they stop supporting?
“Hey, you kids get off my lawn!” Just use studio one pro and get on with your life😂
I’m a Nuendo guy, but my next video I used Studio One. Great DAW!
Every time I see your header and the word avid I'm gonna get my popcorn ready😂😂
I love Pro Tools. My yearly updates on my perpetual license is up in June. I am done renewing. I am keeping what I have with my HD Native setup and will use it, but also moving on.
Love it when Barry goes on a tear and calling out company BS.
Moved to Studio One after 20 years with Pro Tools. Tried Reaper, Cubase and Nuendo but immediately Studio One was instinctively the right one for me. Pro Tools became a mess and Avid started charging ridiculous money for a DAW that was second rate. Reaper felt like a school project. Won't list the benefits of Studio One... there are far too many. 😎
Reaper > Avid Pro-Tools
Haven't tried reaper and it makes me wanna try
I agree. I bailed on Avid at rev 12.5 (around 2015), the last version that I could get without them forcing me into their "subscription plan" at that time. As you said, they've continued their arrogant "business plan" ways throughout the past 14 years and just don't seem open to anything that their end-users really want (unless they can find a way to really stick it to them somehow). Their greed and unwillingness to keep up with competitors (at all, or at times by making us pay an unreasonable up-charge) is just blatant corporate gouging. I still use that old version 12.5 on my older computer (it works fine and is stable), but I've transitioned to Studio One for all future DAW needs and don't see myself ever going back. I too was an early MIDI adapter, and this is just another reminder of why I won't give them another cent.
Same time here. I paid $60 for Reaper and had free upgrades up until version 7 which was only some months ago where I paid another $60. It's fully comparable feature-wise and because it's endlessly less CPU hungry the transport is far, far superior, not to speak of being much less buggy - at less than $10 a year!
Reaper. It just f&%king works. Always.
The licensing price is so ridiculously affordable.
Tutorials out the wazoo. For free.
Completely, 100% customizable. Ok, maybe 98.5%
Why do people pull their hair out like this? Bail on the ‘industry standard’ overpriced BS and get back to making music.
Reaper. It just f&%king works. Always!!
✌️
I'm British. And in Britain, when you call someone a 'tool' you are calling them a dick. And in Britain, in the old days (I'm antediluvian too), a 'pro' was a prostitute. Gives a different angle on 'Pro' 'Tools', huh? I can't stand the software. Remember when it was still unable to handle floating point audio? PT9? In 2011! Very 'pro'...
😂
If Avid isn't careful they'll become the Blackberry of DAWs
Maybe - or they become the expensive niche product among a select group of producers that have a different use case than the up and coming prosumer market other products work for. This might just be a way of trimming the administrative support ‘fat’. In businesses that are built around a specific model the cost to changeover is high.
Younger generation will soon be those people and they are not loyal to Avid.
@@trebleboost7 I get what you’re saying however there are too many options out there.. how many niche customers are there that Avid can make money off of in the long term?
@@trebleboost7They wouldn't succeed at that, there is already niche players at that level who have solid loyal customers and that niche is occupied by the 3 players (Prism Sound - Sadie, Merging Technologies - Pyramix & Magix - Sequoia).
Happy with Steinberg cubase and nuendo 13 pro they never do this type of stuff to us
Software has become a very dirty business. I've been an IT pro since the 90s. AVID is one of the very worst out there.
Work for a software company, ye old shipped, run on your computer, turned SaaS, so much insider baseball nobody knows.
Love Your insight Barry. I have the 61 key version and feel your pain. I go back to the Late 80's with my first commercial studio. Then onto 6 DA-88's (that Hurt) Then on to building custom computers and Raid arrays with Fibre Channel Disk arrays to get incredible track counts for the time. Pro tools could not keep up, and Nuendo 1.6 became the thing to use. We were only using Pro Tools to fly in tracks from other facilities with lesser Track Counts. Still Do. But MIDI has been a part of my life since 84 and when I got my First Kurzweil K250 from sweetwater Scoring became a real thing. Don't ever change Barry! And Please keep the Video's coming. I find them highly Inspirational and very Motivational! God Bless.
avid only pee'd me off once then i refused to buy anything from them , that was 15yrs ago
You brought back memories of the first kind of DAW I ever saw in 1989 or 1990. It was Steinberg Cubase running on an Atari 😀
I dropped Pro Tools a few years ago. Studio One works just fine for me. F Avid. Too expensive.
Barry, please explain what you're talking about. I'm searching for "AVID MIDI" and "ProTools MIDI" but can't figure it out.
I had to use Protools last night at another “professional” studio to mix a song & I was annoyed as phuck… I don’t understand why people even use the DAW
I watched the video but i still don't know exactly what happened to cause your upset, can someone explain? Looked for avid midi news but couldn't find anything
Same. Barry ranting with no context.
You might want to watch it again. MIDI is the key word, pr should i say acronym. It is absolutely inexcusable for them to maroon long-time users because they can’t/won’t produce compatible MIDI drivers.
Studio one all the way :)
Yeah Barry my man you left Avid for Steingberg and went back against your better judgment 😂. Trust me I get it though because I have similar frustrations with Cubase and I use Pro Tools as well. They both have their strengths and weaknesses, but what I do not understand, and I chalk it up to my lack of experience is how and why people got so invested in Pro Tools in the first place. Sure they were one of the first DAWs, but one of the least innovative. Anytime an equity firm takes over the product and service dies. Just ask Guitar Center.
I’m on Logic Pro and staying there!!!
I cannot stand working in logic. I hate the feel of it especially when editing audio regions.
Barry, Man I could not have said it better. I was told that the Axiom Direct Link driver was "messing with" the latest release midi implementation and doing weird things. So they took it out. My options were to find a controller with HUI or roll back to the previous version. My issue with that was this driver has worked since forever so for you to introduce an issue in a new feature and infer that M-Audio was a problem, but I could roll back to any old version says volumes about your commitment to a product that you used to own. And it was for that reason, I purchased the M-Audio for use with Protools in the first place. So here's to you Avid and your abandonment philosophy. It rings true that your decision-making process ranks customers at the very bottom of your priority list.
Midi controller's prices are not that bad but the dismissiveness of this decision from a customer standpoint says a lot. Thank you, Barry, for validating how I felt when support basically told me to get over it and you are not important. I thought it was just me....
Hahahahah You trusted avid shame on you.
What I hate about Avid is their Pace licensing. It’s been logging me out very often because they refuse to change their ways. Pace keeps calling home every damn minute
Let us authorize our damn HD with ilok PLEASE
I love how you're calling out BS. This is such a stupid move AVID. You're just asking people to NOT try ProTools or to look for something else. I just recently got into Music and was exploring various DAWS, Studio One, Logic, ProTools, Cubase. I almost went Pro Tools, but all your stupid, anti customer decisions (like this for example) turned me away. Ironically, I went Cubase because of their strong..... MIDI support.
Reaper for life 💯
I love your style and videos. Maybe you have already done it, but I’d love to see your “Best Avid software alternatives video” where you do deep into evaluations of best options including analysis of audio engines
I’m feeling this video. My hunch is that some folks still use pt out of some un-warranted expectations from their clients. Almost as if someone walks in a studio, sees the studio using a different daw, and says, “what, you mean you don’t have pt”? People assume it’s the bees knees currently because it used to be, and some may even think that if they don’t use pt then their music won’t be radio worthy. I also feel not everyone in the film industry uses pt, there must be at least one that uses something else. Is pt really the only daw that can handle audio editing?🎹♥️
I love it when you fully GO THERE Barry !! LOL!! It’s the half measure rants that I don’t care for.
I mean ….i truly FEEL your frustration, and dedication to the point.
Way to go man.
I actually don’t think Avid is doing so hot right now. Not surprised to hear theyre joining the “shrinkflation” brigade.
Pro Tools enjoys its position because all the top studios in LA and NASHVILLE, are running it, on the street level, its not a popular choice. But as long as Taylor swift, Beyonce, and every rapper in the billboard is having there mixes done in it, it will sit arrogantly at the peak.
You are making me SO glad I never went down the AVID rabbit hole. And I considered it early on. And actually it was the clunky MIDI integration at the time that wasn’t up to par with Cubase and Sonar for my use case.
This is funny I just removed Pro tools from my computers. I restarted last computer to make sure sound was working correctly. I saw this video it is 29 min old ,I put this on for sound check and it is just what I am doing, Pro tool out. No more hassle.
everybody complains, and then they go back buying Avid stuff........classic stockholm syndrom......and they know it......
Great video. Especially the Dinosaur reference. MIDI became central to pop, r&b and hip hop in the late 80's. The DAWs of the late 80's were Keyboards like the Yamaha V50 and others. For company to make such a weak excuse that AVID is making tells me that GREED has taken the place of common sense.
What did they do? Charging separate for midi? I’m unclear.
Also, it’s crazy to me that if you open a session in the basic ProTools Intro possibly unintentionally , it will delete all but 10 tracks from your session permanently, not just be unable to play all tracks..!
@@reded23 I believe that just opening the session deletes tracks beyond 10.
Are you saying if when I close it and ‘don’t save’ it won’t delete them?
Still it’s a terrible aspect.
Why would this even be a possibility?
In my experience, just opening a session deletes the tracks. Are you sure?
All I wish for Avid is to become obsolete!!
Studio One 🚀
M-Audio MIDI will not work with latest PT? My original PT buy (like 13 years ago) included an "M-Box Mini" and "Oxygen 49" MIDI keyboard which was a PITA to get it to work in PT. Whatever, after so long the keyboard still works just fine with Studio One Pro. Just plug it in, no additional drivers, I even mapped the controls easily to S1. Yet one more reason to ignore all of the "please buy an upgrade plan for your perpetual license" emails from PT. I didn't even load PT on my latest studio computer, built in 2020.
Barry, calm down. We need you for a longer time...
I'm stuck with PT: I need to be able to scale my tempo map, tempo curves don't suit beat based music, classical and film yes. I need to be able to select a ramp *a different tempo per bar) and with minimal operation, vary the ramp's steepness from either the front and/or end of the selection: only pt does this. Please correct me if I'm wrong
You can do that in Ableton, easily. Fuck slow tools
@@attilabeats thanks!
WAIT! I haven't used my Arturia mini-keys in a bit. I tried last night with no luck. Is there a work-around? Is my keyboard now obsolete? I also updated an old account of mine back to perpetual. I had created another account and was paying monthly. Now I'm paid up for the year using my old account (I had my sub account removed) but now it seems I'm on ProTools Ultimate. Hasn't been particularly reliable lately. But it's what I know best. Love this channel. Thanks for keeping folks like me in the loop. HOPING my keyboard isn't useless in PT.
I have seen some older M audio devices not transmit midi very well on the mac. I have an edirol controller and a yamaha drum module that don't work either.
Right on point! I had to revert back to Protools 2023.12.1 for my M Audio Axiom to work. Can't afford the high-end gear yet..
I'm still using PT 12. I don't plan to pay for support or upgrade.
what exactly is going on with MIDI inPT? seems I missed something about recent PT changes?
They did remove M Audio from the setup
That was a beautiful and funny deep rant, and it's so funny because it's so true 😄
you are right
Maybe it's time to move on. Cubase, Logic Pro, Studio One, Performer and Reaper are ALL excellent options depending upon your needs. I did the same with Adobe more than a decade ago. Kick them to the curb and watch everyone else complain while you stay productive.
Wow…very well said.👍🏾
That’s how I feel with PC’s. Since I went to Mac in 2006, every time I here a PC user complain, it’s always (and I’m not lying) the same stuff from damn near 20 years ago…now that’s crazy.🤨
@@doodoogtube I have to agree. My personal experience (like yours) is that as soon as I replaced my PC for a MAC for my creative work (still have a PC for gaming 😄) I ended up spending less time troubleshooting and more time being productive.
Can u do a review of your big six?
I don’t see any new updates, when was support dropped and where is that documented?
yea im lost too.
“You get your best people together. Your smartest people that work for your company.”
BWAH-HA-HA-HA! You’re *hilarious*, Barry.
what exactly are you talking about? i had to maybe piece together that certain midi devices will now be unsupported? any link to a list of what? i have a couple m-audio controllers that are "legacy". one still works in "studio b" on an intel mac, the other is unsupported on studio a's mac silicon, but i can use with the MOTU Fastlane which is ANCIENT, but the driver still works.
anyone please fill me in on the details? because this video is not quite succinct enough, despite being nearly six minutes long...
I didn't get it either. What has Avid done this time?
@@DiogoSarcinelli aaaaand still no definitive answer from anyone...
Can someone please explain to the rest of us mortals what the actual heck is going on this time?
Read my comment above, but mainly, Avid is attacking Mulligan, the 3rd-party tool that allows MIDI controllers to be used as fancy PT controllers by pretending to be M-Audio keyboards (since the M-Audio keyboard is the only device that you can add when you're trying to add MIDI controllers in the PT settings). They clearly didn't want us using awesome tools that were cheap and worked great. They want us using their Eucon stuff, which I actually own, but I also have a MIDI Fighter Twister that I can no longer use in Pro Tools since the update.
@@SomebodyPickaName thank you for taking the time to re-explain this to the rest of late comers like me! Avid definition of progress is taking one step forward and two steps backwards it seems!
I use Ableton. Very happy with it.
I only use ProTools at work... because someone else is picking up the tab and everyone in audio-post-production expects ProTools. At home, it's Ableton Live. My old Oxygen 8 keyboard still works with it. My Push Mk1 still works. So I'm content with Live.
I’ve just dropped Avid because of its stupid 64 I/o issue due to it using only the first 64 I/o it sees, well guess what Avid most interfaces have lots of digital I/o so when you have multiple interfaces and are using just the audio jack i/o sockets there is a lot of digital connections not being used and these are eating up most of first 64 channels, between my three interfaces I have over 90i/o but only 48 of them are analog I/o the rest are digital, and I cannot use all the audio connections.Every other daw would let me use all the I/o I have without making you pay three times the price of its competitors. It’s Studio One from now on for me.
How do most of you guys still making profit? Even with the downturn of economy and ever increasing life standards
Well, I picked the challenge to put my finances in order. Then I invested in cryptocurrency and stocks, through the assistance of my discretionary fund manager
Mrs Caroline Arnold
The first step to successful investment is figuring your goals and risk tolerance either on your own or with the help of a financial professional but it's very advisable you make use of professional
Yeah that's right I think it's right to invest with professional at least it saves the trauma of too much loses
~Mrs Caroline Arnold was my hope during the bear summer last year. I did so many mistakes but also learnt so much from it, and of course from Caroline Arnold. She is my number one when it comes to crypto and TA.
Avid sucks. They are SO stupid and treat their base like crap. Perfect template for Adobe to follow...and THEY ARE.
That's called greed
Sorry, but I’m loving my Avid hybrid engine. It kicks serious ass. And if I do anything midi, I use my Yamaha motif do all my sequencing in there and then just sync it to ProTools works like a charm
Oh did you have to mention MIDI begingings. As a LIve user i look back fondly to the late eighties at my Roland MPU midi interface, ms-dos, and Texture (better piano roll than Live - but that is not saying much) and the multi timbrial MT 32.
You could do a piano concerto (a la music minus one) with ease.
My company in the eighties was a big Mac shop and Sound Tools impressed the hell out of us, too bad they become so arrogant and self-satisfied. Are they listed should i sell short?
It would be fun to go back and do a lot of it again!
Ditched protools for Logic Pro 4 years ago. Haven’t looked back
Steinberg really has all that would be needed for most studios. If it wasn’t for the PT “defacto standard”
This is the last straw for me. I have been with Pro Tools since the beginning and have been through a long series of assaults by Digi/Avid on their VERY loyal customer base. I have both Logic and Digital Performer and I will make the transition beginning with my next project. Enough is enough.
If i wasnt entrenched in protools hdx with my console and convertors Im gone. I just saw samplitude i was like wow!
Logic Pro X11 is the New New thing. It’s great. Add in a UA Apollo + Console and you’re done.
whats with the blur?
I still can't believe you went back, Barry. You even tried some of the good DAWs....and you STILL went back?! My heart goes out to you, friend. Your relationship with Avid is an abusive one.
Told you…. Avid will never get a penny from me again since 2009
I have five 2011 macs , ssd’s max ram protools HD10 works like a dream , I would pay Avid for a legit copy of old Protools but they won’t sell it , their loss , I’m not made of money and have no problem running old hardware
I have a similar setup (only two old Macs, though) with Pro Tools 11, works great for me, as well!
You are the Glenn Fricker (without the potty mouth) of studio talk (thats a complement, I really like Glenn's blunt but entertaining truth). Stay on them if they deserve it, great job!
Just wait until avid hear about midi 2.0
@@reded23 u missed the joke

I do not know what to say. You left Avid for Steinberg then you went back to Avid and now this. Avid is over priced and over rated. There is nothing I can do in Pro Tools that I cannot do and Cubase 13 pro and more so. Most people, engineers and a like are continuing to be on this band wagon of keeping up with the Jones and Avid. Sorry I am not going to be victim to it. Just like Waves they screwed the people and with me they are done pretty much for good. After living for 57 years I learned a lot from my own mistakes and mistakes of others. Nothing against you Barry. I just do not understand what the hold on is about Avid. Let them rot.
I never went back to ProTools, not sure why folks think that. I’ve only dabbled back, I still do 90% in Nuendo. Sometimes if I’m working on something someone else sent me and it’s in PT I use PT.
That said, I can name you at least 10 things that you cannot do in new window that you can easily do and have always been able to do in ProTools. It’s only a few, but there are things. Just like there are things innuendo that you can’t do in ProTools.
Agree at 100%. Nuendo samplitude Reaper studio one Logic are 100x better than protrools . No more avid crappy stuff for me. Nuendo 13 is a great software with a lot of offers by Steinberg and a huge package not ridiculous aax sold with protools if you have pt x sessions take aatranslator 2.
@@BarryJohns I apologize Barry but I can swear you had a video that you said you were going back to Avid because you quit them and once you went to Steinberg you said you missed them and they went back to the perpetual license. Again I apologize with respect.
@@BarryJohns boy that reply I made was confusing. That's what I get for replying so quick. Get em Barry!!!! This is my favorite of all the vids. Brutal honesty.
Once upon a time, I was in a pretty big band, 20 years ago…. I was a dummy and had an ego because of it for a while’s. I finally realized that no one gives a damn what you did years ago. It’s what you are able to offer now.
Sounds like Avid needs a the same reality check that I needed and got. No one cares who dominated the market years ago. They just want tools that they can use now in an efficient manner.
I left avid a few years ago because I thought their midi workflow was terrible. Now this????
I was freaking out and reset so much of my hardware and software just to realize it was because avid all of a sudden stopped supporting the driver for my akai mpk249.
Have you ever felt like Charlie Brown trying to kick the football? At some point you have to accept that Lucy will always pull it away or you'll end up flat on your back again.
Yea but sometimes it’s fun to keep trying😁
Barry… hey is there a way you can send this video to Avid? I’m grateful that you’re making this effort for the people who use Pro Tools. Makes me glad I picked Studio One instead!
I can assure you they watch.
Didn't he transition to Cubase/Nuendo? What happened to that?
Still spend most of my time in Nuendo, this video is as much for me as it is for others.
DAWBench podcast has a lot about the new MIDI 2.0 specs

Midi in general has always been crap in Pro Tools. Will anyone even notice if it becomes Avid's official policy? I enjoy my Carbon but use Cubase with my Fireface UFX III for anything requiring virtual instruments or midi. Life is too short for that kind of punishment in PT.
I have a version of Steinberg Pro16 on my Commodore 64 and a couple MIDI carts, one new, one original, want to borrow it?
It’s actually kinda cool to see the great, great, great grandpa of the modern sequencer. No DAW though, sorry, no disk to save the stuff to. 😂
I was a pt user with hd2 accel. When I wanted to get a new mac my hd accel cards wouldn’t work in it. They told me I could trade my gear in, give them an additional $9000 to get their new hd1. That’s when I left them and started using logic. Then I discovered s1 and loved it.
