Leo Tolstoy, The Death of Ivan Ilych: A Christian Critique

- Tolstoy's The Death of Ivan Ilyich is a defence of a curious but powerful existentialist approach to life, one that embraces death rather than living to avoid it.
In this lecture, I support Tolstoy's critique of the "theology of glory" of the world but also critique Tolstoy's existentialist response, offering instead the Christian understanding of the theology of the cross.

Just finished this today. I know you were mentioning it's not specifically Christian, but then on the last page:
-- In the place of death there was light. "So that's what it is!" he suddenly exclaimed aloud. "What joy!" --
and then
-- "Death is finished! It is no more!" --
struck me as straight Gospel eucatastrophe. It was a glorious turn. I don't know what else but the Christian system that can do that.
Christian sentiments without Christ or his cross.
Glory to lord Jesus Christ
