      The script was great, the cast was excellent, the film was creepy, without copying the original, Brad Dourif is brilliant as ever and the possessed Father Karras scared the shit out of me, when I was a kid... hell, it even had a Samuel Jackson, playing piano in heaven! What more would you want out of life? Under-rated to no end...
      ... this turd however, was one of the first horror-films, that I turned off, halfway through, and started doing something else... or perhaps put on another movie. Can't quite remember. Which is a shame, because it had a nice cast: Richard Burton, James Earl Jones, Linda Blair's T&A... for the love of Pazuzu, it even had a score by Ennio Morricone! The literal case of a pearl-necklace being put around a sow's neck, before throwing the pearls down a toilet... what went through the heads of everybody involved, will forever remain a mystery. Or perhaps it was some kind of demonic possession....

    I saw this as kid on TV -- I was around 13 (give or take a couple of years -- it was a long time ago: I am in my 50's). I remember it made very little sense to me, and in my recollection I had always attributed it to me being too young to understand its complex plot. And now I see your review, and how accurate my memory was: the movie made no sense because it had none to begin with! 😆

I recall the movie being very long, so the editing must have been fairly light, and probably they just removed some small bits; but the story just didn't make much sense to me, the plot just seemed to me overly complicated. People complain that Hollywood today only invests in sequels and remakes, and yes they do it for money, but you have to remember there was an era in Hollywood where they made sequels purely for money with absolutely no effort to make a movie actually worth watching. For a very long time, The Godfather Part II and Aliens were the only sequels EVER that you could argue were better than the original. Sequels have definitely improved in the past decade or so.

    The empty spots on the balcony actually gave me nightmares as a child. I don't even remember seeing the movie, I probably didn't, but I must have stumbled on the trailer because that image crept into brain and I immediately recognised it when I saw it years later. Oddly enough, of the entire Exorcist franchise, it was the one thing that did scare me. A hell lot, even.
    Then again, I was raised Catholic schools, in Europe, which meant very old churches and demon-related talk was actually per usual for me as a small kid and perhaps against all odds did not even scare me. Now falling to my death from a gap in the balcony railing did scareme.

      @Bertaut 5 лет назад +4

      @@thedarkness4052 True. It wasn't even supposed to be called Exorcist III, nor was there supposed to be an exorcism in it. As you probably know, it's based on a book by William Peter Blatty called Legion, and he wanted the film called the same thing. For some reason, the producers thought the Exorcist IP still had value so they made him call it Exorcist III: Legion, before dropping Legion altogether. But once they'd changed the name, they watched his rough cut and were horrified that a film called Exorcist III had no exorcism in it, so they made Blatty do all the stuff with Nicol Williamson's character, which is okay in and of itself, but tonally divorced from the rest of the film. Honestly, with all the interference, the fact that film didn't disappear is a testament to just how good it is. And it also has the greatest jump scare in history.

Ya can't force a flower to grow, you can't force yourself to go to sleep, and you can't force creativity.

    I`ve been in the highrise glass business for almost 40 years. Sure back in the 70`s we`d install railings on skyscrapers with portions missing. That way kids, pets, the old or drunk would plummet to sidewalk below. Then, to protect people on the sidewalk, we'd sell the building owner sturdy glass canopies over the storefronts at street level.
    Of course party-poopers made us stop leaving out portions of the railings on highrises, but we still, for fun, leave out the welds and bolts on one panel of every railing. If you lean too hard it'll snap off and you'll plummet to the sidewalk... sorry, sturdy glass canopy below.
    "Hey! This railing is unsafe!"
    "Then don't lean on it. Didn't you read your railing warranty?"

I didn't understand the movie. It wasn't scary at all. It was just confusing. It was like some first year art students were asked to make their own version of the Exorcist. • @ashleywetherall
    @ashleywetherall 5 лет назад +1

    The Heretic is not the worst movie sequel of all time. Yes its bad.In fact in terms of screenplay,its pretty much appalling. The trouble is that Mr Kermode rates the Exorcist as his all time favourite movie of all time. So I can quite understand his hatred of its first official sequel. So firstly I would like to point out why people dislike Exorcist II: The Heretic so much.
    1)The screenplay is terrible.It really doesn't hold water. We are supposed to believe that Regan still has that demon Pazuzu trapped and suppressed inside her and the only way to uncover the truth is to use a hypnosis strobing machine so that another person can travel in to her subconscious and witness the events of father Merrins death in the first movie. Plus we find out the Regan can cure the sick ,see the future and draw scary pictures depicting forthcoming events that only father Lamont can decipher.
    2)The acting.. Well its pretty much hilarious. Richard Burton made this movie when he was fighting his Alcohol addiction. Half the time, he seems to be reading all his lines off cue cards. This makes his performance both mesmerising and infuriating. Linda Blair fairs little better. She really hasn't got much to do and Like Burton she is saddled with terrible dialogue that keeps her character two dimensional though the entire film. This also applies to Louise Fletcher who had just won a deserved Oscar for One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. In this movies she is forced to say the the most inane lines, with which she speaks with total indifference. Kitty Winn, James Earl Jones and Max Von Sydow fair only slightly better with Ned DELIVERANCE Beaty having a great cameo as the Pilot.
    And finally
    3)John Boorman. A great director who seems totally out of his depth with this material.The trouble is that Boorman has always been a straight story teller but the film storyline is so all over the place that no director could rain it in. The original worked because it presented its story in the most realistic way possible. Its almost scientific in its presentation of good verses evil leaving its meaning up to its audience. Boormans film is overly complex and as a result it becomes slightly pretentious.
    So you may ask yourself, what is right with Exorcist II: The Heretic and why did I give it a 6 stars when most people have given it one or even none. Well. I think its is one of the most visually stunning movies ever made. I personally watch it for the visuals alone. Strangely Exorcist II: The Heretic is as film of many different palates and styles and although some say this is a weakness in my humble opinion it is one of its strengths. Also the films horror elements have a strange and eerie beauty to them. from the opening where the possessed women burns to death to the aerial demon riding the wind sequence with reminds me of those cinema virtual roller coasters. There are also tremendous visuals that utilise models, such as the climb to the cliff top Temple. Plus the African Locust attack. All these sequences have a dream like quality to them that is as good visually as anything we can do to day with computer graphics. I should also mention Ennio Morricones excellent score. Although it seems out of place in some sequences it is non the less powerful and works well with some of the visuals. To sum up.
    As I have said before Exorcist II: The Heretic is not a good movie. But its isn't no where near as bad as certain critics would have you believe. Over the past 10 years I have seen many movies that I would class as a lot worse than Exorcist II: The Heretic.
    I believe you should try watching Exorcist II: The Heretic. Or if you have already seen it and hated it. Try watching it again it may grow on you. It did on me. To me Exorcist II: The Heretic is like a Wedding video where someone has filmed you dancing like you dad or doing Karaoke. You know you shouldn't watch it, but some how you can't help yourself. Plus secretly you quite like it.

    I am impressed you reviewed the original full house of crap that was Eexorcist 2 Heretic.
    I reviewed it for my college paper when the wtf movie came out.
    I pointed out that at the end when Burton and Linda Blair walk off, they are walking towards a drop of about a hundred feet or more, onto a gas station, my having visited the famous site.
    The stairs down which Jason Miller's character fell in the original film are to the left of the screen, the house to the right; my friends and I parked down in the parking lot below, and climbed the stairs to the house.
    You didn't show what my review included: Louis Fletcher after the car wreck, running about in circles with barbed wire or such in her side, calling for help in the silent street with all the urgency of calling a puppy to come indoors.

    This needed a heavy rewrite. The script was shit. It reeks of too many people with different ideas trying to cram them all in. Needed to be more simple. I would have written a story where another kid, this time a teenager, is being possessed and the church feels like it might be the same demon so send the priest to interview Regan in the psychiatric hospital about her memories to find out if it's the same or a different one. In the finale, which would be similar to the ending of this(because the movie at least gets interesting in the finale), the Demon which turns out to be the more powerful demon Baal attempts to possess Reagan and seduce Burton's character. They succeed defeating the demon together, but Reagan dies at the end of the battle. I would have used that famous German case(which also inspired Emily Rose) where the girl died during the exorcism as the inspiration for the second film.
