@@thedarkness4052 True. It wasn't even supposed to be called Exorcist III, nor was there supposed to be an exorcism in it. Honestly, with all the interference, the fact that film didn't disappear is a testament to just how good it is. And it also has the greatest jump scare in history.
The Exorcist holds it's value even today. Not only the horror aspect, but the incredible acting. Ellen Burstyn, Jason Miller and Max Von Sydow do an amazing job, especially the character of father Karras by Miller. He is one of my favorite characters of all time.

I love how a cab crashes through a front gate, a fire starts and burns someone to death, and a townhouse collapses, and no one in this densely populated neighborhood seems to notice. If it happened in my neighborhood, there would be a bunch of people outside trying to figure out what is going on.
The main problem is the P13 trend to attract teens in theaters. And add to that the fact that every (non scary)creepy pasta circulating on medias are the main theme and voila! You have the least scary horror films in existence. I have nothing against movies that are aimed at a younger audience, but you need more to scare hardcore horror fans and very often the trailers for these things are very misleading for the kind of audience it's targeted at.
@@jjwp-ql5rv It has a lot of things hiding under the surface in that film. Someone on RUclips has done a video about the film hints at Regan having been sexually abused, without making it blatantly obvious. So the Exorcist is as much about the harm done to her by people. The film critic Mark Kermode rates it as one of his best films. While I don't entirely agree, I respect Kermode's opinion in other areas (unlike most critics) so he must see something in it.
He definitely deserves more subs. He's one of the few that hasn't posted click-bait, nor does he have those obnoxious 'Raid: Shadow Legends' ads inserted into his vids. Edit: Nor does he ask every video for people to subscribe and vote. He's humble about it.
@@shugaroony I think so. Other horrific films I can think of with half decent casts include Caligula (which sunk many careers, or at least submerged Malcolm McDowell's for a while), the Devil within Her, 1941 by Spielberg... I guess I should probably give an honourable mention to Jan Michael Vincent, because while he was never that good of an actor, I loved Airwolf as a boy and he appeared in a string of bad films.
The British tax code at that time left iconic actors buried under taxes because they were financially on the line between middle class and wealthy. If they wanted even a semi-comfortable middle class lifestyle, they would have to take whatever decent-paying crap came their way. That's how Alec Guinness was roped into Star Wars and Laurence Olivier ended up in a Moonie cult film. Guinness was actually grateful for doing Star Wars because the royalties meant he wouldn't have to do any more films he didn't like.
@@newguy90 A lot of these people just went to live overseas. Connery ended up in Spain, a lot of others went to live in the Irish Republic for similar reasons.
I've been watching horror movies since I was 9, and fifteen yars later, The Exorcist is one of the very few movies that still terrifies the shit out of me. The sequel though... it makes me laugh.
Forgive me for my cinematic heresy, but...I actually LIKE Exorcist II The Heretic. It is wacky, often makes no sense, and at times it IS laughable. Yet, I found it to be enjoyable.
Ironically the fact that Pazuzu exists (no really, look it up) makes this even funnier. They took a demon from actual mythology, made him terrifying, and then slowly diminished his supposed effectiveness by making the sequels crappier.
I was a teen when this came out. I just remember Linda Blair was cute and how liberating it must be to walk around in see through nightgowns ll day in public.
So many times people think they need to add to what is already a masterpiece. I don't get that. You can't just force creativity. It comes on spontaneously, yet all too often we try to force it. Ya can't force a flower to grow, you can't force yourself to go to sleep, and you can't force creativity. This reminds me, why in the fuck are they making a fourth Toy Story?
I`ve been in the highrise glass business for almost 40 years. Sure back in the 70`s we`d install railings on skyscrapers with portions missing. That way kids, pets, the old or drunk would plummet to sidewalk below. Then, to protect people on the sidewalk, we'd sell the building owner sturdy glass canopies over the storefronts at street level. Of course party-poopers made us stop leaving out portions of the railings on highrises, but we still, for fun, leave out the welds and bolts on one panel of every railing. If you lean too hard it'll snap off and you'll plummet to the sidewalk... sorry, sturdy glass canopy below. "Hey! This railing is unsafe!" "Then don't lean on it. Didn't you read your railing warranty?"
In all fairness, if people are going to call Bruce sick over this, then maybe they should realize she was literally dressed up in a nightie in one scene and seducing a grown man. They were doing their darnedest to make her "hot" for this movie.
OMG i forgot the psychiatrist in this was the evil Nurse Ratchet from 'Cuckoo's Nest'! How the great John Boorman managed to make such a turkey is incredible to me. 'Point Blank' is a stone classic, and 'Excalibur' though it is undeniably odd, has a firm grip on its material and possesses real magic.
I saw this in a double bill with the original Exorcist film. My girlfriend spent most of the first film covering her eyes in fear and most of this film covering her mouth because she was laughing so much.
I am really glad this review exists. There are times I watch a movie, not like it, but feel like the world will hate me because I find fault with it. Exorcist 2 was one of those. I didn't understand the movie. It wasn't scary at all. It was just confusing. It was like some first year art students were asked to make their own version of the Exorcist. When I hear Mark talk about these movies I feel like I'm not alone anymore.
I mean, it's a universally disliked film, and many fans of the original hate the sequel. Even the third film gets more love (and rightly so) than this rubbish. So there never was any need to think you were alone with this. I was actually angry when I watched this film the first time, because it felt so insulting to the original Exorcist.
I can predict the future..done it many times and I will say this..you will be the ultimate movie producer/director in 10 years..you see thru all the bullshit and will make the best movie of 2030...buckle up and we will be looking for mistakes yet there will be none.
I saw it when I was 11 (exorcist) and I lost my shit. When she started floating and furniture started moving I was done! By the time I saw part 2 I was in my teens and I was jaded by horror movies. So yeah I showed no interest. Especially after all the interviews I read and videos I watched.
My dad saw the exorcist when it first came out and they almost kicked him out of the theater because he was laughing so hard. It is not even close to scary unless you have satanophobia or are easily scared in general.
This movie makes total sense. You need to calm down with the medicine my fishtank doctor gave me...hold on, doctor, the RUclips's asking me to explain the movie I..hang on...
BRING BACK PRACTICAL EFFECTS!!!!!!!!!!! Also, have you noticed that the 80s and 90s are notorious for having TERRIBLE horror movie sequels. Like I know we have bad sequels now, but think about how many horror movies have had a ton of sequels that are largely considered bad. Jaws, Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, Child's Play, Alien.
most of these franchises have sequels better than the original and did you quote Alien as having a bad sequel. I hope they reversed that lobotomy in the past 4 years.
I'm so old, I saw this in the theatre as a young person. Yup saw Exorcist in the theatre too. I was freaked out by the Exorcist, as was everyone in the theatre, and kind of like Ex. 2. BUT I LOVE the way Mark uses the James Earl Jones thing to go full Darth Vader, Way cool !!!
The exorcist is most scariest and terror inducing movie still to this day. It is no horror movie at all. It's a well written and interpreted story of unstoppable fear. Fear that shows itself to your face and terror that seeps into your imagination.
I actually really like the Father Marrin Africa exorcism flashback scenes in this. Its got this weird, orange dreamlike vibe that works. It’s about the only part of the sequel that should’ve stayed cannon.
9:02 It's always funny to see street scenes in movies with a famous actor/actress and they did not use a closed set. Instead of all the people going about their regular business in the movie like they should you have a bunch of people staring at this "character" thinking, "Is that Linda Blair?"
The Heretic is not the worst movie sequel of all time. Yes its bad.In fact in terms of screenplay, its pretty much appalling. The trouble is that Mr Kermode rates the Exorcist as his all time favourite movie of all time. So I can quite understand his hatred of its first official sequel. So firstly I would like to point out why people dislike Exorcist II: The Heretic so much. 1)The screenplay is terrible. It really doesn't hold water. We are supposed to believe that Regan still has that demon Pazuzu trapped and suppressed inside her and the only way to uncover the truth is to use a hypnosis strobing machine so that another person can travel in to her subconscious and witness the events of father Merrins death in the first movie. Plus we find out the Regan can cure the sick ,see the future and draw scary pictures depicting forthcoming events that only father Lamont can decipher. 2)The acting.. Well its pretty much hilarious. Richard Burton made this movie when he was fighting his Alcohol addiction. Half the time, he seems to be reading all his lines off cue cards. This makes his performance both mesmerising and infuriating. Linda Blair fairs little better. She really hasn't got much to do and Like Burton she is saddled with terrible dialogue that keeps her character two dimensional though the entire film. This also applies to Louise Fletcher who had just won a deserved Oscar for One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. In this movies she is forced to say the the most inane lines, with which she speaks with total indifference. Kitty Winn, James Earl Jones and Max Von Sydow fair only slightly better with Ned DELIVERANCE Beaty having a great cameo as the Pilot. And finally 3)John Boorman. A great director who seems totally out of his depth with this material. The trouble is that Boorman has always been a straight story teller but the film storyline is so all over the place that no director could rain it in. The original worked because it presented its story in the most realistic way possible. Its almost scientific in its presentation of good verses evil leaving its meaning up to its audience. Boormans film is overly complex and as a result it becomes slightly pretentious. So you may ask yourself, what is right with Exorcist II: The Heretic and why did I give it a 6 stars when most people have given it one or even none. Well. I think its is one of the most visually stunning movies ever made. I personally watch it for the visuals alone. Strangely Exorcist II: The Heretic is as film of many different palates and styles and although some say this is a weakness in my humble opinion it is one of its strengths. Also the films horror elements have a strange and eerie beauty to them. from the opening where the possessed women burns to death to the aerial demon riding the wind sequence with reminds me of those cinema virtual roller coasters. There are also tremendous visuals that utilise models, such as the climb to the cliff top Temple. Plus the African Locust attack. All these sequences have a dream like quality to them that is as good visually as anything we can do to day with computer graphics. I should also mention Ennio Morricones excellent score. Although it seems out of place in some sequences it is non the less powerful and works well with some of the visuals. To sum up. As I have said before Exorcist II: The Heretic is not a good movie. But its isn't no where near as bad as certain critics would have you believe. Over the past 10 years I have seen many movies that I would class as a lot worse than Exorcist II: The Heretic. I believe you should try watching Exorcist II: The Heretic. Or if you have already seen it and hated it. Try watching it again it may grow on you. It did on me. To me Exorcist II: The Heretic is like a Wedding video where someone has filmed you dancing like you dad or doing Karaoke. You know you shouldn't watch it, but some how you can't help yourself. Plus secretly you quite like it.
Pazuzu is the king of the demons of the wind. Mortal enemy of the evil Lamashtu and other evil entities. So much, that he was a protector of the humans against plagues and misfortunes. And, specially, he was a protector of the mothers in childbirth. So yeah, they choose for this movie the only f*cking good demon to be the main antagonist.
I am impressed you reviewed the original full house of crap that was Eexorcist 2 Heretic. I reviewed it for my college paper when the wtf movie came out. I pointed out that at the end when Burton and Linda Blair walk off, they are walking towards a drop of about a hundred feet or more, onto a gas station, my having visited the famous site. The stairs down which Jason Miller's character fell in the original film are to the left of the screen, the house to the right; my friends and I parked down in the parking lot below, and climbed the stairs to the house. You didn't show what my review included: Louis Fletcher after the car wreck, running about in circles with barbed wire or such in her side, calling for help in the silent street with all the urgency of calling a puppy to come indoors. Great review! It was so panfuil to watch when I saw it in the theater (apart from Linda as Sexy Sultry Demon Regan).
There is one positive about this movie: this review. Hilarious!

John Boorman going from directing the excellent Deliverance to directing Exorcist II: proof how far a director can fall (although he did rebound in '81 with Excalibur and again in '85 with the underrated The Emerald Forest). Also, William Friedkin could only watch the first half hour of this. Can't believe he even made it THAT far.
Peter Gorman I watched that one in spite of my husband’s warnings about how awful it is... the song in the movie is awful... and I am pretty sure it contributed to my irrational fear of children...
This needed a heavy rewrite. The script was shit. It reeks of too many people with different ideas trying to cram them all in. Needed to be more simple. I would have written a story where another kid, this time a teenager, is being possessed and the church feels like it might be the same demon so send the priest to interview Regan in the psychiatric hospital about her memories to find out if it's the same or a different one. In the finale, which would be similar to the ending of this(because the movie at least gets interesting in the finale), the Demon which turns out to be the more powerful demon Baal attempts to possess Reagan and seduce Burton's character. They succeed defeating the demon together, but Reagan dies at the end of the battle. I would have used that famous German case(which also inspired Emily Rose) where the girl died during the exorcism as the inspiration for the second film.
@Carol Bogdanowitz What? They're remaking it? Aww man.. why can't they just leave well enough alone. They're running out of ideas so they have to recycle movies. 😭

Honestly, with all the interference, the fact that film didn't disappear is a testament to just how good it is. And it also has the greatest jump scare in history.
"Repossessed" was the true sequel.
Thanks Leslie Nielson

The Exorcist holds it's value even today. Not only the horror aspect, but the incredible acting. Ellen Burstyn, Jason Miller and Max Von Sydow do an amazing job, especially the character of father Karras by Miller. He is one of my favorite characters of all time.
Yeah, today's "horror" movies are just gore and don't hold a candle to this.
LMFAO at how you do these bad reviews. it's so blaze and sarcastic, it's comedy gold. that Darth Vader voice over was hilarious, and the planet earth with wailing reference was so funny and i loved how fixated you were on the dead cab driver. i just subscribed and can't wait to go through the bad review playlist. :D
That younger girl who Regan helped was actually Dana Plato who later was on Different Strokes.
I know someone who got blown by Dana for crack. True story.
I still say that shot of her going down the stairs backwards is the creepiest thing
I can't believe they got poor James Earl Jones in this movie.

the Exorcist tame? no freaking way. that movie still scares me today.
I love how a cab crashes through a front gate, a fire starts and burns someone to death, and a townhouse collapses, and no one in this densely populated neighborhood seems to notice. If it happened in my neighborhood, there would be a bunch of people outside trying to figure out what is going on.
The Exorcist from 1973 is way more scary than most of the horror movies nowadays
The main problem is the P13 trend to attract teens in theaters. And add to that the fact that every (non scary)creepy pasta circulating on medias are the main theme and voila! You have the least scary horror films in existence.
I have nothing against movies that are aimed at a younger audience, but you need more to scare hardcore horror fans and very often the trailers for these things are very misleading for the kind of audience it's targeted at.
khaleesi k it is
I don't understand how it's scary. I watched it as a child too the first time. It's not very good.

The only reason why it was worth watching was Linda Blair in her a prime!!!!!!😍😍😍😍😍
Why do so many bad films have good actors? Burton is one of the greats.
This has to be up there with one of the worst films with the best cast?
Paycheck. Also, sometimes a movie looks good in script form, but sucks on film

Define "exists" lol mythology specifically DOESN'T exist
and so what makes that ironic?? i dont see anything ironic at all about that.

They are?
Toy Story 5 now-
Toy story 4 was actually REALLY good
4:10 That was an actual place, and the crew had NO WAY to help Linda Blair if she fell.
"Hey! This railing is unsafe!"
"Then don't lean on it. Didn't you read your railing warranty?"
Linda blair was SO hot though
Dude she was like 17 you pervert!
Literally not a single attractive person in this movie...
Troy Baker in most islamic countries the age of consent is 9.
Allan's Snackbar!!
When I hear Mark talk about these movies I feel like I'm not alone anymore.
dumb.

When my father saw the exorcist in the theater, he passed out. I guess from fear.
My dad saw the exorcist when it first came out and they almost kicked him out of the theater because he was laughing so hard. It is not even close to scary unless you have satanophobia or are easily scared in general.
Darth vadar part was epic xD

The exorcist is most scariest and terror inducing movie still to this day. It is no horror movie at all. It's a well written and interpreted story of unstoppable fear. Fear that shows itself to your face and terror that seeps into your imagination.
The original exorcist terrified me. But the sequel was a comedy. I laughed so hard during the movie...IMO it's a great comedy
S'ok. Linda Blair is always delightful.
I actually really like the Father Marrin Africa exorcism flashback scenes in this. Its got this weird, orange dreamlike vibe that works. It’s about the only part of the sequel that should’ve stayed cannon.
You’re doing a great job sarcasticly. That’s not even a word, but you’re great. Thank you

It waa fucking retarded. I'd rather watch Exorcist III. Brad Dourif as a serial killer is bad ass.
Well, you kinda did watch it now. :P
"The Cab Driver...." L o L
Only great thing about Exorcist 2 Linda Blair is absolutely beautiful in it.
And finally
3)John Boorman.
Plus secretly you quite like it.
linda blair looks so good tho

Pazuzu is the king of the demons of the wind. Mortal enemy of the evil Lamashtu and other evil entities. So much, that he was a protector of the humans against plagues and misfortunes. And, specially, he was a protector of the mothers in childbirth. So yeah, they choose for this movie the only f*cking good demon to be the main antagonist.
All DEVILS ARE EVIL! WTF are you saying by implying there good?
The only thing that I'll ever remember from this is James Earl Jones dressed as a locust.
I saw it when I was a kid (80's), I called it The Locust Movie
So exorcist 2 is essentially the last 2 hours of a bad acid trip
There is one positive about this movie: this review. Hilarious!
John Boorman going from directing the excellent Deliverance to directing Exorcist II: proof how far a director can fall (although he did rebound in '81 with Excalibur and again in '85 with the underrated The Emerald Forest).
Also, William Friedkin could only watch the first half hour of this. Can't believe he even made it THAT far.
This was a bad movie. But its one of those bad movies I really enjoyed. I love Exorcist 2. It was scary as hell to me when I was younger.

Exorcists1 and 3 are excellent, but for some reason I love Exorcist 2:) Thanks for review.
Trust me when I say that The Exorcist 3 is pretty awesome.
Linda Blair survived the Exorcist but was forever traumatized by the making of this movie.
The Exorcist is my all time favourite movie to this day it's still the scariest movie I've watched. Linda Blair is gorgeous!
