Toxoplasmosis is a parasitic disease caused by Toxoplasma gondii, an apicomplexan.[3] Infections with toxoplasmosis are associated with a variety of neuropsychiatric and behavioral conditions.[8] Occasionally, people may have a few weeks or months of mild, flu-like illness such as muscle aches and tender lymph nodes.[1] In a small number of people, eye problems may develop.[1] In those with a weak immune system, severe symptoms such as seizures and poor coordination may occur.[1] If a person becomes infected during pregnancy, a condition known as congenital toxoplasmosis may affect the child.[1]
Toxoplasmosis is usually spread by eating poorly cooked food that contains cysts, exposure to infected cat feces, and from an infected woman to their baby during pregnancy.[3] Rarely, the disease may be spread by blood transfusion.[3] It is not otherwise spread between people.[3] The parasite is known to reproduce sexually only in the cat family.[9] However, it can infect most types of warm-blooded animals, including humans.[9] Diagnosis is typically by testing blood for antibodies or by testing the amniotic fluid in pregnant women for the parasite's DNA.[4]
Prevention is by properly preparing and cooking food.[10] Pregnant women are also recommended not to clean cat litter boxes or, if they must, to wear gloves and wash their hands afterwards.[10] Treatment of otherwise healthy people is usually not needed.[5] During pregnancy, spiramycin or pyrimethamine/sulfadiazine and folinic acid may be used for treatment.[5]
Up to half of the world's population is infected by toxoplasmosis, but have no symptoms.[7] In the United States, approximately 11% of people have been infected, while in some areas of the world this is more than 60%.[3] Approximately 200,000 cases of congenital toxoplasmosis occur a year.[6] Charles Nicolle and Louis Manceaux first described the organism in 1908.[11] In 1941, transmission during pregnancy from a pregnant parent to their baby was confirmed.[11] There is tentative evidence that infection may affect people's behavior.[12]

My dog ate my cats shit once and got toxoplasmosis. What really happens is the parasites swell the brain to a level where the animal is not thinking properly and puts themselves in danger. Luckily my mother’s friend was a veterinarian who specialised in toxoplasmosis and she noticed the symptoms straight away. What happened was he randomly started screaming and running around. He was in pain. Usually the tests for toxoplasmosis cost a lot of money. Money we did not have. So we were lucky to have someone who knew. We saved him and he lived along a nice life. He is a German shepherd x husky and his height did get stunted, but we are lucky to still have him.

Toxoplasmosis can indeed cause severe neurological symptoms in pets, but early diagnosis and treatment, as in your case, can significantly improve outcomes and quality of life.

The main way that people are infected these days is, not by eating meat, but by eating raw produce, both organic and conventional. This is really important since people are eating more raw fruits and vegetables now. "In the 1960s and 1990s, toxoplasmosis outbreaks mainly occurred through ingestion of cysts in meat and meat derivatives; in the 1980s, through milk contaminated with tachyzoites; in 2000, due to the presence of oocysts in water, sand, and soil; and in 2010, due to oocysts in raw fruits and vegetables. Our study suggests a possible change in the epidemiology of reported toxoplasmosis outbreaks. Because of this change, we suggest that greater attention be paid to the disinfection of vegetables, as well as to the quality of water used for drinking and irrigation." (2019 study)

My mom died on toxoplasmosis, she wasn't pregnant. When I was 10 years old I've brought little kitten from my friend Casper, his cat which was a girl gave a birth to a few kittens. So I took one kitten cause I wanted to show that I can be responsible.... Yeah...I wasn't. Instead of taking kitten to the vet and give my cat a baths I just was happy that I had a cat. And he liked to go and come back when he wanted and one day he got sick. My Mom took care of him and he returned to being healthy cat and my Mom got sick, it started with headaches, then She was walking and talking fast at night and we went with dad and with Mom to the doctors and they gave her antidepressants only without looking for problem with her health further and her sickness went further and faster. And after my 11th birthday at april 30th 2004 doctor called that Mom died and before death She started to loosing more consiousness and after section they found out that it was toxoplasmosis. But it was my fault cause I was irresponsible and stupid little girl and because of me my Mom died😢

I'm so sorry for your loss. Toxoplasmosis can be serious, especially if left untreated. Remember that it's not your fault; understanding and addressing the risk factors can help prevent future cases. ❤️

Why would one prescribe an antibiotic for a parasitic infection?

Depends on the symptoms but typically an anti parasitic is prescribed

Antibiotic refers to any kind of compound that kills living organisms which cause an infection, it isn't necessarily used exclusively to bacterial

@@eduardoBR1991most antibiotics we use and when I say most I mean literally 99% have almost 0 anti protozoal properties and that's the reason why we generally tend to differentiate medication that works antagonistically to bacteria and parasites with a few substances being effective at both.

Honestly crazy that almost 1/3 people have it.
Wonder if that's why humans are so attracted to owning cats even though they are a weird and ironic pet to have evolutionarily.
Makes me want to blood test for everything now yikes

Using Toxoplasma gondii to manipulate rat behavior is an interesting but ethically and scientifically concerning approach to pest control. It's important to consider humane and safe methods.
