Crohn's/UC is a bastard. I was diagnosed at 33. Looking back, it explains so many things I experienced growing up, that were usually blamed on my growth, weight, or being lazy. I've been lucky, and while I nearly shat myself to death, I've been able to mostly recover thanks to Remicade and later Stelara. However, ancillary issues, like consolidated pneumonia and prednisone induced diabetes have been added on top of everything else. The best description I can give to people about any of these chronic illnesses is that everyone has a stamina bar, and mine just happens to normally be about half of a normal persons. However, sometimes, I can extend it, and other times, it won't refill as fast.
Sorry you were in the hospital. The 3 weeks I spent (over two visits), was annoying to say the least, especially those nights when you just can't sleep, regardless of what the disease is actually doing. Stay Strong!

Thank you for your post and sharing your experience with Crohn’s disease. I was only recently diagnosed with Crohn’s about 3 years ago (I started getting sick 4 years ago). It was very late in life that I got it (late 40’s). I spent my 30’s into my 40’s with IBS. If I had to choose between the two, I’d go back to IBS (of course I’d much rather be healthy again!). It’s been a tough journey thus far, without much support. Many of my friends or others I’ve spoken to about it (outside of the medical field) don’t know much or anything at all about the disease. Some haven’t even heard of it which is crazy considering there are at least 17,000 people in my city of Vancouver BC alone living with this disease. With that I’ve found it difficult to get support from friends and some family, even my GP. Most “friends” lost their patience because they don’t understand and don’t contact me anymore, and some very rarely. They don’t understand when I have to cancel plans last minute or if it’s going for a bite to eat, they don’t fully grasp my dietary needs (which consists of very little on my food list). I can’t help but then feel selfish and needy (I’m much a work in progress). This has presented such a huge change in my life. I’m on my 3rd biologic (trying to find one that works) which is now Entyvio. I’ve had a few runs of prednisone, the first when I was admitted to hospital with a blockage. That combined with my first biologic (Humira) seemed to make my weight rapidly increase daily-sometimes as much as 5 pounds a day! I gained about 45 pounds and two years later I have only lost about 15. The rest just won’t budge! I’ve been on two…or three? more runs of prednisone and luckily no more weight gain, just moon face and every other symptom that it’s known to potentially cause! I’m praying the Entyvio will start to do it’s magic soon (I’ve had 4 doses). Thankfully I’ve been approved for subcutaneous injection so I will be able to give it to myself instead of going to the clinic for IV infusions. I’m still frustrated with my GI specialist because I have painful and odd (to me) issues going on that he just won’t address every time I talk to him or see him (which is a rare occurrence), for example the tight pressure and distention under my ribs and feeling as if my liver is badly bruised along with every type of pain throughout my digestive system…and Oy Vey, the sounds it makes sometimes! My last colonoscopy in late March showed that things have much improved (Dr said like a 2 out of 10, 10 being horrible), so why do I still feel so rotten? And for some reason the Drs at this hospital that I’ve seen here in Vancouver BC, have performed my colonoscopy’s without the proper sedation, so I’m awake and feel all the pain and expressing myself about the pain doesn’t matter. This was my third test like this, from 2 separate Drs…so now I have anxiety about having another colonoscopy. A new symptom popped up eleven months ago. I went to bed feeling ok and able to walk just fine but I woke up the next day unable to walk properly! My left knee was completely inflamed all around the patella and my leg was frozen into a bent position. The numerous Drs I’ve since been to see, don’t have any answer as to why this is happening. The best answer I’ve received is from my Orthopaedic surgeon who said it may be caused by my fibromyalgia and Crohn’s disease being flared up? She seemed unsure. I was told to try physio and see what happened. I have a difficult time this would happen over night just like that.
I had my first Covid vaccination two weeks previous to this happening which for me raises some suspicion. It could very well have an odd effect on those with autoimmune diseases-especially those who are having a flare and are inflamed. It has been 11 months on crutches now. I’m at my wits end and feel so alone with it. I can’t seem to eat much of anything without having pain, even broth. I’m hoping I find an answer and/or relief soon! I’m tired of feeling this way. My life mostly consists of laying in bed, watching RUclips or whatever! Oy Vey! When I feel adventurous and go out to do something very gentle, I often end up in pain for the next few days. Last couple of times I ended up feeling as if I had the flu, with a fever that only lasted 1 day (each time). So, I again find myself back in bed.
I apologize for the length of this “comment”! I’m feeling rather desperate for some possible answers and advice from someone who gets it!
I’m so sorry you’ve had to deal with this illness for the majority of your life, Jeff. I hope you feel better these days and have been in remission! Some say it can be healed-any thoughts on this? Would you happen to have any tidbits of advice for me? Feel free to email me at: jmnvan@yahoo.ca
    Cheers, all the best!!

He played with EVERYONE, like The Beatles, The Who, The Rolling Stones etc etc.I love his playing sooo much; it has been a great inspiration in my work as a musician. Yes, he had Crohn's Disease, just like you. May we all live long and prosper.

As someone with rheumatoid arthritis, thanks for sharing your experience to encourage others to understand the need to take care for others during this challenging time. Thankful to now be vaccinated and able to travel to more COVID-free environments! Maybe not to St Louis yet but, God willing, hopefully soon!

I’m 22, diagnosed at 14. I’ve gotten used to living like this but my first surgery is in a few months so I’m nervously watching random videos. Loved this one so much and I wish you all the luck!

@@Artofwarthebookof5rings yes, I’ve been on infusion medicine since my diagnosis. but as we all know being on a certain med for a long period of time can cause tolerance so lately I’ve gotten worse which is why I’m getting surgery soon

Great video - hope it helps people to see that every day takes a bit more courage for some of us. Personalising the stakes involved in COVID helps transcend the whole “team blue vs team red” aspect of people’s response. All the best.

Great job man, that is a good video on Chrons...it runs in my own family, although I do not believe I have it or it is mild if I do. I am type two diabetic though and deal with that. I would also appreciate it if everyone would do there part and where a mask and social distance. Your awesome man!!! Prayers and keep up the great work! Your Ansible 101 series was awesome, highly recommended!!

You have a hilarious way to discuss a tough medical issue. I enjoyed the programming and eruption comparisons too. Oh, consider Old Faithful rather than Mt. Vesuvius but i get the picture...funny my doc called today...my covis delayed colonoscopy is back on. Best wishes in your fight to avoid covid and keep making great videos.

Having Multiple Sclerosis myself, I can totally relate to everything you said.
I would not wish what I go thru each day on anyone, I could never hate that much, but I do despair over some folks attitude towards Covid.
I along with my partner who has a compromised immune system, did not leave the house for 18 months, we coped with that by learning something we are interested in, for myself that is coding and for them 3d modelling, ya just gotta keep at it eh.
Best of to you and yours, keep fighting geez :D

Kudos for stepping out in the public and talking about Crohn. In fact I have a friend who's suffering from it and he doesn't do PHP, either. Coincidence? I don't hink so. Seriously, that made me laugh much more than it should have ;-) Thank you for all the work you've done, without that my professional world would be quite different. I do hope you're continuing with that.

Oh man, I do have IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), probably i would say its only 20% as severe comparing with chrons disease, maybe less, but this is already horrible. It changed my life completely and stopped me to really enjoy things outside. Pretty icompatible with travelling and social life :(. I had the enema and could not hold it when doing the scan, that was embarrassing, and remember doctor shouting to me, probably as he did not understand at all what it is. Glad to see you keep you sense of humour, don't loose it!. Respect. Regards

I appreciate your humor too. I'm learning a lot with your ansible videos. And the raspberry pi dramble is awesome.
