You don’t have to spend all of that money buying them from a stealership just get the Asin kit asin is owned by Toyota made in Japan I use a Japanese made water pump and gates Japanese made belt
Looks like it wasn’t the belts fault more with that grenade style tensioner which RUclipsr Bundys garage said it’s best to use the old style shorter butterfly tensioner and they will work with other Honda engine later models because even I noticed Hondaa V6 engines that had old style butterfly tensioner didn’t have the timing failure problems the later Honda engine do especially the 3.5 V6 with that stupid VCM bundys garage he doesn’t understand why Honda switched to that grenade style hydraulic one if can use the short old style tensioner or the non hydraulic one’s made by specialty shop P2R available eBay $99.00 end of tensioner fail
Thanks for the video. When I did change my timing belt just recently, I've noticed the belt tensioner was leaking oil too, just like yours. Had I waited to reach 100K Miles before i changed the belt (my Acura RDX is 10 y/o, low mileage at 65K) i might have experienced a similar failure and RDX also has an interference engine. It's a good thing that GATES timing belt kit comes with a new tensioner.
I just experienced the same belt failure on my 2006 Pilot. It was torn just like this one, and had no signs of age cracking. At 104K miles, I had replaced the original belt, tensioner, idler pulley, and water pump with an Aisin kit from RockAuto. The Aisin kit included a Mitsuboshi belt, which is supposedly the OEM manufacturer for Honda. The failure occurred at 171K miles, so it was not past the mileage mark to be changed again. It was totally unexpected; I am diligent about proper maintenance. I'm not sure if I want to roll the dice and go through process of changing it again, only to find out I'm not as lucky as you. Because I know that I won't invest the time and money to rebuild/replace the cylinder heads and anything else associated on a 17 year old vehicle. It sucks, because I had planned to drive it until the "wheels fell off".
Earlier this year I also installed an Aisin kit on my 2006 Toyota Highlander. My kit included a Mitsuboshi belt which is OEM for Toyota. So far it's been fine but I'm nowhere close to putting 70k miles on the new belt. I am aware of the huge problem of counterfeit parts and my understanding is RockAuto is very safe, so it's surprising and concerning to hear about your belt failure. If you did the job yourself the first time I assume you took a chance and put in a new timing belt as even a 17 y/o Honda Pilot is still worth driving in my opinion (we also have a 2012 Odyssey). Did you end up giving it a shot or did you sell it with a healthy discount?
@@donaldlee6760 I ultimately decided to repair it. The rest of the vehicle was in too good of condition not to do so. I pulled the heads, took them to a machine shop for repair, and reinstalled them with Felpro gaskets and another Aisin kit from RockAuto. HOWEVER, I used a Honda belt from my local dealer this time. All in, my costs were under $1400 by doing it myself. The vehicle was sold to a family member who was very grateful to get a well-cared-for SUV!
@CodyPowers-wj4qg the main, obvious problem was the 2 bent valves. The machine shop replaced them, the guides, seals, grinded the valves, seats, surfaced the heads and pressure tested them.
I have given up on Ebay for new parts after I purchased two O2 sensors for a 2001 Lexus RX300. The O2 sensors came in a box that said Toyota and the O2 sensors were labeled Toyota also, but after changing them the error came back. I took it to Toyota cause nI couldn't figure it out. They changed the sensors again and informed me that the Ebay ones were clones. Chinese cloners are very good but their clone parts are not.
Ross Knittel - fordtekmakuloco just made a very informative video about fake Ford Motorcraft parts being sold online. Must be a bigger issue than I realized. The loves of money is the root of all evil, folks will do almost anything to make a little more of it. And they do it at our expense! Sorry you had to find out the hard way.
Great job on this engine. A lot of people working on SOHC or DOHC engines with internal timing chains(i.e. the 2.2L and 2.4L GM engines) or external timing belts, fail to check the operation of the tensioner before starting to make expensive repairs on the head when the valve timing gets out of sync and all the money lights come on. In your case the belt obviously had to be replaced, but if you hadn't noticed the weakness of the chain tensioner and had not replaced it, you would have had a valve timing problem pretty soon after the belt was replaced. You really dodged a bullet, if that is a true interference engine. To restore some of the lost compression, trying adding a can of Restore (Restore 00012 Engine, 12.5 Fluid_Ounces ) an additive that actually works on restoring compression, or a can of Seafoam, which also works, and both are available from Amazon, Walmart, or your local auto parts store. The Project Farm channel tests just about everything related to tools, engines and products relating to repair work, and he has done long term testing on his old Ford Ranger farm truck with a 4-cylinder gasoline engine treated with Seafoam (and Lucas) (ruclips.net/video/prXiQgVVnDY/видео.html ) and he tested Restore on his Ford turbo-diesel tractor ( ruclips.net/video/VXIu3oo8z4c/видео.html ) that was very hard to start due to low compression. GREAT video!! It can happen. Guy had a 2006 Honda van with near 250k miles & bragging on it & how he has saved thousands sleeping in it as always on the road in sales. I asked him about Timing belt & he replied... " What is that"? He researched & had me change out all items... *Blackest belt I ever changed! Now I own a 2007 & yes, you can inspect from fireside was top cover by removing 5 bolts. But more often than not, high revs with a defective tensioner will get ya!
After researching timing belt parts I gave up and bought Honda OEM parts from a local dealer. I could not convince myself that any aftermarket part was of sufficient quality or wasn't counterfeit.
@@RNtechmom At least double the price of a name brand aftermarket parts kit. Best to call a dealer to get exact prices, or visit the web site of one of the dealers with an online parts store.
@@RNtechmomhink I paid about $700 from dealer for belt, pulleys, tensioner, and water pump back in 2021. With inflation that might br $10,000 nowadays 😅.
So I just did a belt for my neighbor about 2 months ago and it snapped just like yours did. It was a Honda oem belt and I replaced all the pulleys with oem parts. Same as you never saw a belt rip like that. It actually ripped apart in 3 spots. And some of the tracks ripped from the belt itself. I put a new belt on and it started up just fine. No miss yet but I can hear air escaping through one of the valves (maybe). Only thing I noticed was the Honda belt was much stiffer. I replaced with a like oem part from WorldPack. 🤷♂️
I had the same problem using an aftermarket tensioner. Redid the job with a Honda tensioner and a Honda belt. I noticed a strange noise after a few weeks. Took off the upper front timing cover and saw a disturbance in the belt. Made a slow motion video and saw a loop of slack repeatedly showing up then disappearing. I would recommend waiting until 2x the recommended interval Those belts are fine at 100k and do not need changing.
Belt just went in our 04 pilot.. slow speed, i knew exactly what it was.. didn't try to restart.. going to replace belt water pump and pray!!! I hope we are lucky too, can't afford a new car right now!!! God Bless You
I think that Honda engine is an interference engine, most often really bad things happen when the belt breaks. Rebuilding both heads is expensive, but mainly the time required to remove and replace is many hours, often too much at the shop rate.
My brother also got his belt from ebay. Same issue on his 2014 odyssey. He wasn’t the lucky. Bended valves and scratched cylinders. Ended up with buying another 2014 odyssey. Don’t mess with timing belt - get it from your local dealer or store
Wish I saw this and the comments earlier. Just bought a full set of timing belt kit for $250 from eBay :( They have not arrived so I have not put them in yet. Plan to get another belt and hydraulic tensioner from the local Honda dealer now, but will use those sealers and pulley in the eBay kit.
Follow up on my repair after belt broke from ebay parts. The hydraulic tensioner was completely froze and would not retract inside itself. I also noticed the bearings were slightly worn and the water pump had a few drops of coolant leaking out. I scraped all the crap parts and got the asin kit from Napa. I was lucky, no misfire or damage and back on the road.
so glad no damage occurred. is the tensioner a counter fit part? there are a lot of the Chinese clones on ebay. I have seen it on spark plugs, tpms sensors and oil filters mainly for Toyota and Honda.
Those replica kits fail because the belt is slightly shorter then OEM and when install they fit super tight as If the tensioner was already placing tension even before releasing the pin.. after driving for a while the belt just gives up.. I notice that when I install the replica kit and knew that was not right but I went ahead and install it anyways (that was before all of the failures started showing up online and decided to remove the whole kit.)
I just had an eBay timing belt fail on pilot. Fake Chinese knockoffs marking them Honda. Honda water pumps are made by another company and will never say Honda on them. Never again will I buy a timing belt from eBay!
happened to me this week on my 07 odyssey. changed timing belt with ebay "fake" oem honda kit 8k miles ago. belt shredded and killed my engine. very frustrating! beware of fake/counterfeit part from ebay!!!
I've seen several of these pilots in my shop after someone replace their own timing belt. And almost every time the only thing they changed was the belt. Answer me this question did you also replace the bearings and the tensioner? If not that is why the new belt failed.
Same thing happened to me. I fell for the cheap price for so called OEM. Replaced everything like the tensioner, idler, water pump etc. now I have a ruined engine less than 20k miles. Never again
Yup, sane here all Honda oem fake parts on ebay as a kit. Put 10k on the new installation and belt blew,. Both cams are at 3oclock belt wrapped around crank..putting the old one on to test, if it's OK going right up to honda counter not ebay..fake china crap
There are reputable companies on eBay that sell them for less I’ve bought Japanese made pumps and belts never had one fail for a fraction of the stealership
I have gotten burned on fake parts from ebay. Purchased 4 different sets of up and down stream O2 sensors for my wife's Equinox before giving up and buying the real ones local. Drove me crazy with codes and lean/rich fuel conditions lol. Glad it worked out for you with the timing belt, that could have ended very badly.
Sorry to hear about this issue, I don't understand why ebay and amazon won't remove this sellers selling fake oem Honda timing belt kits.. I myself also had one of those install and after seen and reading all of the people that had issues and belts breaking I went ahead and remove the whole kit and replace it with a dayco belt and Aisin water pump and tensioner and koyo idler and bearing.. I only had 2k miles on this ebay replica kit before I decided to remove it, I did not felt safe driving around on that.. for 2k miles the belt actually look bad like if it had way more miles then that, I am glad I remove it.
Wow, you made the right decision to remove that counterfeit kit from Ebay, just in time. I wish I had known about that problem, to have saved my '05 Honda Odyssey. I will have to junk it, after the catastrophic failure of one of those timing belt kits, which I purchased on Ebay and after only 4000 miles from the intalation, the belt broke off and ruined my engine.
Changed mine but i went STRAIGHT to the dealer for these critical parts. Wouldn't even trust Autozone, much less Ebay. Ebay is good for floor mats or something. Some evil scammer type people out there that take pride in causing others nothing but grief and misery, while taking your hard earned cash. #TrustAbsolutelyNoOne

Best to take off plastic covers and inspect the belt. It takes 10 minutes. Or just take it down and replace as necessary. Belt tensioner and water pump would be cheaper than the whole kit with sprockets and gears
Its the failed tensioner. 99.99% of the time when a acura or honda timing belt failed is due to the failed tensioner. Sometime the tensioner failed one time and worked again within seconds or minutes, you would not know. Some will failed directly and you will see it failed. Most time the tensioner failed within seconds, the belt become lose within the second and slide its way out of place and get jam up by the crank gear or xam gear , what will cause a broken belt.
Me and my dad put a "OEM" timing belt kit from ebay in my 2006 pilot. Well guess what just broke.... we are hoping the damage was minimal like yours was. Where would you suggest buying the new belt and tensioner from? Also did you replace the ebay pullies or just leave them in.
95% of the claimed "oem" honda kits on ebay and amazon are fake, very well faked, these cheap knockoffs last anywhere from 5-50k miles, i have seen this happen too much, ( 14-18 incidences per year) if the price is too good to be true it is !!! buy oem from the dealer

Hi, You dint show that how to bring the crack shaft and cam shafts at TDC. I have a 2008 accord 3.5 EX, and the timing belt jumped....can you help me.I had done few timing belts before , but that was 15 yrs ago.
Finally made #1 on the likes Ramon. I know there are two style tensioners used and that one from what I’m told is prone to leakage. I know my 07 odyssey is my next project and maybe I’ll go with the other style. Who knows. Yes you or your sister or both are lucky. Didn’t look good in the beginning but glad it worked out. Question: same happened to me, i have bent valves, i lined up crank and both cams, how do i know if the crank is 180 out or does it matter? I owe a lot so gota fix it, thanks👍
KT Tangos don’t pull your heads just yet. Set your engine in time and check compression on your cylinders. You my get lucky as I did or you may have bent valve on one head only. If that’s the case you will need to pull only one head off. Hope this make sense. Thank you
KY Home Garage ya i did that, 0 and low compression on 4 out of 6 so i put it at TDC, removed belt and started disassembly. Cant get exhaust off, bolts are rusty and half size they shud be. Tried heat n PB blaster. Gona order sum gearwrench bolt biter sockets.
A shop close by had this happen to them once almost exact same failure as yours. He used a genuine belt. Also there is a huge amount of counterfeit “Honda” parts on amazon and eBay lately. I have been using mitsuboshi belts for 10 years with zero comebacks. Pulleys are always koyo and aisian tensioner and pump. Glad you got lucky man.
@@kyhomegarage3430Burning oil is usually worn piston rings. That won’t effect driving at all I recommend just topping the oil off every 2-4 weeks and you’ll be set to keep driving I do that in my brothers honda prelude
Did you turn the rear camshaft by hand to line it up? The one on front you said it was right on but the rear. Same happened to my wife's van I'm in the process of removing timing covers.
@@kyhomegarage3430 is not going to hit the pistons? I have done timing in this engine before but the belt wasn't broken so I put it at TDC but this one broke so I wasn't sure if I can turn the camshafts by hand. I was thinking on removing rockers so all the valves are close then turn the cams.
@@kyhomegarage3430 Yeah can that be good call? Like if crankshaft is at TDC it is not possible to hit valve. However, some cam and valves can be in way of it. Real rocket science.

I just bought. A 2009 pilot noticed the timing belt sittin on service slot are not spinning only serpentine belt rolls over but timing belt doesn’t roll over
I've seen several of these pilots in my shop after someone replaced their own timing belt. And almost every time the only thing they replaced was the belt. Answer me this question. Did you also replace the guide bearings and the tensioner? I bet you didn't and that is why the new belt failed. Sometimes you don't have to replace the bearings but that tensioner piston and the tensioner should always be replaced when replacing the timing belt it usually comes as a kit if you bought from a reputable source.
Had this happen on an interference Hyundai 4 cylinder and it turned out that there was engine damage from the failure. Have an 05 by honda in the ahop now with the same issue involving a broken belt with less than 20k miles since it's replacement. Got my fingers crossed that there's no head damage

I have a honda ridgeline broke timing belt front camshaft is at 12 oclock on the money, back camshaft is at 6 oclock from timing mark, and crankshaft is at 3 oclock from timing mark. How do go about the lower crankshaft cw or ccw? And back camshaft cw or ccw to get it lined back up?

He asked if the crank cam relation passed non danger angle what would be say 60 degree and one of two cams went say 100 degrees off to crank than you cannot return it back without piston hitting valve. Yours answer is ok only if you get lucky.
This is your lucky, lucky day. Had visions of bent valves, twisted con rods and God knows what else. This deserves a celebration night out. Beware of items claiming to be genuine. Seen identical Toyota items on Ebay, one oem and the other pretending to be. I challenge any tech to spot the difference. Everything including numbers and official colours were matching. The only giveaway was very small writing, made in China. For critical parts, such as timing and sensors, use certified parts from above average reputable company or next time there may not be such a happy ending. Learned this lesson from experience.
Hey man I have the same issue timing belt broke front cam shaft is on time 12 o clock, back camshaft is at 6 oclock, and lower crankshaft is 3 ocloc. Timing belt snapped due to leaking weeping water pump? how did you get the back camshaft and lower crankshaft realigned? Did you just realign them seperate I don't know any other way to go about other then get your timing arrow marks back where they need to be did you go clockwise ccwseems like I could go ccw on lower crankshaft being its not far from 12 oclock on the mark and maybe cw to back camshaft to get it realigned hope I get er done like you that would be great!
Those were knockoffs parts, don't EVER buy timing belt or components from ebay. Buy from your local parts store or from Rock Auto. You were very fortunate, it could have been way worse.
I bought a gates timing belt kit for my 2008 Odyssey (same engine as this pilot) and the belt broke after 69k miles. Idler, tensioner pulley, and water pump all seized at the same time. Never seen that before, but I put in all Honda parts from the dealer and it started and ran just like in this video. So thankful
I bought my kit from dealer parts department.It doesn’t say “Honda”.Waterpump says Aisin,and the belt says Mitsubisho.Maybe you got an inferior counterfeit part.

Bought a Timing belt Kit From ebay May las year OEM as it seems on the packages. Installed, Today April 17 2022 Belt Fail at NJ TurnPike at 70 MPH. Very scary sound.😢. Had it towed to a local Mechanic. He said when this happens it is more common missive damage on the internal of the engine. I could put a Timing belt, but not guarantee it will last or even run at all. Recommend me to Replace the whole engine. After seeing in this, i see no difference at all. I haven't decided what to do yep. Of course Timing belt way lot cheaper than the whole engine, but im also scare that i may need to replace the engine soon due to failures.😔
You just need to align your cam and crank pulleys with timing marks and install timing belt. Same procedure as you would have to do if you changing head gasket.
Great Video, Question, was the Hydraulic Tensioner part of the kit? Was it a OEM Honda/Is that the mileage 101k? Seems like respectfully saying, I believe I will stick to my Nissan Chain. I am glad it worked out well for you. Truly.
There's a lesson to be learned. CHEAP GETS EXPENSIVE. most of the time on-line parts are counterfeit to look like OEM. When you can buy a part for a fraction of the cost of OEM, QUESTION THAT.
Dayco actually had a recall on a certain date-range of tensioners they made for exactly this problem; leaking cylinder leading to failure. I actually had one of these tensioners on my 2010 pilot that did the same thing. Fortunately I heard the timing belt banging one of the cam sprocket covers and caught the problem before it got out of hand. My bet is that the tensioner on this pilot failed and the belt got physically caught on the forward cam sprocket and it literally ripped the belt apart. I think that if this were the case, the crank and cam would stop moving because of the jammed belt, which protected the valves. As this IS an interference motor, no stems were bent etc. Lucky for absolute sure!! Those belts are super tough and you sister's timing belt looks totally ripped. There was a lot of force involved in this failure - luckily it was so easily repaired : )
You should have had the belt analyzed and compared it to a known Honda belt. From what keeps happening with all these so called genuine Honda Parts off Ebay, the online photos that show the parts show all Honda but several mechanics have already found that the actual parts are not Honda but they are all stamped Honda.

I have seen this before. Parts bought on eBay may or may not be boot leg regardless of labels. Better to take a second mortgage and go to the dealership. Sorry, very sorry!
I just did plugs on mine 66,000 miles on the plugs engine seemed to be running fine no misfires,But the porcelain on #2 spark plug was broken off and i guess it went into the cylinder i put a bora scope down the cylinder and the valve had some pretty good gashes in it and was darker then the other cylinders But it still runs fine I didnt do a compression ck. im thinking the cylinder deactivation is the cause I bought from the original owner it has 177000 miles with the cylinder deactivation still enabled
Same thing just happened to me but i must have somehow gotten a Shit Belt😐 it also tore off the timing belt stopper and the lower cast aluminum piece it bolts too. I will jb weld it and buy new stoppee n belt😐 But its 1 in 10 million thar theres no valve damage in interference engines☹️ Just like yours Everything looks good even my tensioner
Great video, primary failed part was the tensioner. The belt snapped when the slack worked over to the wrong side then snapped back. Tensioners are unreliable, I've read some OE tensioner fail at less than 5K miles. I use the Gates Blue Kevlar reinforced belt. A company called P2R makes a manual tensioner I'll install next time I do this. Honda added Kevlar to the belt teeth in 2010 but I gather Gates went full Kevlar in the chords also and what I'm running now. Run a synthetic oil in both the engine and trans. Run a 0-10W-30 change at 10K, change the filter every 5K. Replace the PCV Valve or clean and check every 40-50K miles, the most overlooked under the hood. You dodged a bullet on this one with no bent valves but replacing valves is a 15 minute problem with parts and tools in hand, heads off. I had to replace both cams at 265K, dealer wanted 2,500 per head + labor. It cost me 650 in the garage. Nola Guy yeah the shop said that it might not be worth fixing cause of that, and that we’ll just waste money on it for no reason since they thought the internals were damaged, we took the chance and told them to do it anyway risking it cause my brother really wanted to keep the car, I did keep good care of it(besides the belt) and by some miracle they manage to get it going again cause the engine was still good somehow. If that ain’t proof of how durable Honda engines are I don’t know what is lol
Problem I've with my 2005 Honda pilot anytime I enter water with my hondat pilot 2005 the timing bet will cut off? What is actually the problem please I need help I've change timing bet within one month 3 times I finally discover when I enter water with it the time bet will cut... please I need help.
Maybe a cheap water pump or pulley's but considering how much is riding on that belt (no pun intended) it's not worth taking the chance. I'd opt for the Gates blue racing belt.

Why is it so difficult for honda to use timing chains in their V6 interference engines? You dont hear toyota users talking about routine changing of timing belt. Toyota has since stopped making engines with timing belts. What is stopping honda from transitioning to chains in their V6 engines?

Looks like it wasn’t the belts fault more with that grenade style tensioner which RUclipsr Bundys garage said it’s best to use the old style shorter butterfly tensioner and they will work with other Honda engine later models because even I noticed Hondaa V6 engines that had old style butterfly tensioner didn’t have the timing failure problems the later Honda engine do especially the 3.5 V6 with that stupid VCM bundys garage he doesn’t understand why Honda switched to that grenade style hydraulic one if can use the short old style tensioner or the non hydraulic one’s made by specialty shop P2R available eBay $99.00 end of tensioner fail

Thanks for the video. When I did change my timing belt just recently, I've noticed the belt tensioner was leaking oil too, just like yours. Had I waited to reach 100K Miles before i changed the belt (my Acura RDX is 10 y/o, low mileage at 65K) i might have experienced a similar failure and RDX also has an interference engine. It's a good thing that GATES timing belt kit comes with a new tensioner.
I just experienced the same belt failure on my 2006 Pilot. It was torn just like this one, and had no signs of age cracking. At 104K miles, I had replaced the original belt, tensioner, idler pulley, and water pump with an Aisin kit from RockAuto. The Aisin kit included a Mitsuboshi belt, which is supposedly the OEM manufacturer for Honda. The failure occurred at 171K miles, so it was not past the mileage mark to be changed again. It was totally unexpected; I am diligent about proper maintenance.
I'm not sure if I want to roll the dice and go through process of changing it again, only to find out I'm not as lucky as you. Because I know that I won't invest the time and money to rebuild/replace the cylinder heads and anything else associated on a 17 year old vehicle. It sucks, because I had planned to drive it until the "wheels fell off".
If you want your timing belt to last always replace with genuine OEM parts from your local dealer.
Earlier this year I also installed an Aisin kit on my 2006 Toyota Highlander. My kit included a Mitsuboshi belt which is OEM for Toyota. So far it's been fine but I'm nowhere close to putting 70k miles on the new belt. I am aware of the huge problem of counterfeit parts and my understanding is RockAuto is very safe, so it's surprising and concerning to hear about your belt failure. If you did the job yourself the first time I assume you took a chance and put in a new timing belt as even a 17 y/o Honda Pilot is still worth driving in my opinion (we also have a 2012 Odyssey). Did you end up giving it a shot or did you sell it with a healthy discount?
@@donaldlee6760 I ultimately decided to repair it. The rest of the vehicle was in too good of condition not to do so. I pulled the heads, took them to a machine shop for repair, and reinstalled them with Felpro gaskets and another Aisin kit from RockAuto. HOWEVER, I used a Honda belt from my local dealer this time. All in, my costs were under $1400 by doing it myself. The vehicle was sold to a family member who was very grateful to get a well-cared-for SUV!

@CodyPowers-wj4qg the main, obvious problem was the 2 bent valves. The machine shop replaced them, the guides, seals, grinded the valves, seats, surfaced the heads and pressure tested them.
I have given up on Ebay for new parts after I purchased two O2 sensors for a 2001 Lexus RX300. The O2 sensors came in a box that said Toyota and the O2 sensors were labeled Toyota also, but after changing them the error came back. I took it to Toyota cause nI couldn't figure it out. They changed the sensors again and informed me that the Ebay ones were clones.
Chinese cloners are very good but their clone parts are not.

The loves of money is the root of all evil, folks will do almost anything to make a little more of it. And they do it at our expense! Sorry you had to find out the hard way.
Great job on this engine. A lot of people working on SOHC or DOHC engines with internal timing chains(i.e. the 2.2L and 2.4L GM engines) or external timing belts, fail to check the operation of the tensioner before starting to make expensive repairs on the head when the valve timing gets out of sync and all the money lights come on. In your case the belt obviously had to be replaced, but if you hadn't noticed the weakness of the chain tensioner and had not replaced it, you would have had a valve timing problem pretty soon after the belt was replaced. You really dodged a bullet, if that is a true interference engine.
To restore some of the lost compression, trying adding a can of Restore (Restore 00012 Engine, 12.5 Fluid_Ounces ) an additive that actually works on restoring compression, or a can of Seafoam, which also works, and both are available from Amazon, Walmart, or your local auto parts store.
The Project Farm channel tests just about everything related to tools, engines and products relating to repair work, and he has done long term testing on his old Ford Ranger farm truck with a 4-cylinder gasoline engine treated with Seafoam (and Lucas) (ruclips.net/video/prXiQgVVnDY/видео.html ) and he tested Restore on his Ford turbo-diesel tractor ( ruclips.net/video/VXIu3oo8z4c/видео.html ) that was very hard to start due to low compression. Those test results speak for themselves. Cody the Car Guy used Restore on a Honda 4 cylinder and was surprised that it worked - ruclips.net/video/YvyYkW42yOc/видео.html.

GREAT video!! It can happen. Guy had a 2006 Honda van with near 250k miles & bragging on it & how he has saved thousands sleeping in it as always on the road in sales. I asked him about Timing belt & he replied... " What is that"? He researched & had me change out all items... *Blackest belt I ever changed! Now I own a 2007 & yes, you can inspect from fireside was top cover by removing 5 bolts. But more often than not, high revs with a defective tensioner will get ya!

After researching timing belt parts I gave up and bought Honda OEM parts from a local dealer. I could not convince myself that any aftermarket part was of sufficient quality or wasn't counterfeit.

So I just did a belt for my neighbor about 2 months ago and it snapped just like yours did. It was a Honda oem belt and I replaced all the pulleys with oem parts. Same as you never saw a belt rip like that. It actually ripped apart in 3 spots. And some of the tracks ripped from the belt itself. I put a new belt on and it started up just fine. No miss yet but I can hear air escaping through one of the valves (maybe). Only thing I noticed was the Honda belt was much stiffer. I replaced with a like oem part from WorldPack. 🤷♂️

I had the same problem using an aftermarket tensioner. Redid the job with a Honda tensioner and a Honda belt. I noticed a strange noise after a few weeks. Took off the upper front timing cover and saw a disturbance in the belt. Made a slow motion video and saw a loop of slack repeatedly showing up then disappearing.
I would recommend waiting until 2x the recommended interval Those belts are fine at 100k and do not need changing.

I think that Honda engine is an interference engine, most often really bad things happen when the belt breaks. Rebuilding both heads is expensive, but mainly the time required to remove and replace is many hours, often too much at the shop rate.
My brother also got his belt from ebay. Same issue on his 2014 odyssey. He wasn’t the lucky. Bended valves and scratched cylinders. Ended up with buying another 2014 odyssey. Don’t mess with timing belt - get it from your local dealer or store

They have not arrived so I have not put them in yet. Plan to get another belt and hydraulic tensioner from the local Honda dealer now, but will use those sealers and pulley in the eBay kit.

Follow up on my repair after belt broke from ebay parts. The hydraulic tensioner was completely froze and would not retract inside itself. I also noticed the bearings were slightly worn and the water pump had a few drops of coolant leaking out. I scraped all the crap parts and got the asin kit from Napa. I was lucky, no misfire or damage and back on the road.
Would not but timing belt on E bay or Amazon.
OEM only! No compromise with the timing belt. 😢 (Cheaping out isn’t worth it).

so glad no damage occurred. is the tensioner a counter fit part? there are a lot of the Chinese clones on ebay. I have seen it on spark plugs, tpms sensors and oil filters mainly for Toyota and Honda.
Those replica kits fail because the belt is slightly shorter then OEM and when install they fit super tight as If the tensioner was already placing tension even before releasing the pin.. after driving for a while the belt just gives up.. I notice that when I install the replica kit and knew that was not right but I went ahead and install it anyways (that was before all of the failures started showing up online and decided to remove the whole kit.)
I just had an eBay timing belt fail on pilot. Fake Chinese knockoffs marking them Honda. Honda water pumps are made by another company and will never say Honda on them. Never again will I buy a timing belt from eBay!
happened to me this week on my 07 odyssey. changed timing belt with ebay "fake" oem honda kit 8k miles ago. belt shredded and killed my engine. very frustrating! beware of fake/counterfeit part from ebay!!!
I've seen several of these pilots in my shop after someone replace their own timing belt. And almost every time the only thing they changed was the belt. Answer me this question did you also replace the bearings and the tensioner? If not that is why the new belt failed.
Same thing happened to me. I fell for the cheap price for so called OEM. Replaced everything like the tensioner, idler, water pump etc. now I have a ruined engine less than 20k miles. Never again

I have gotten burned on fake parts from ebay. Purchased 4 different sets of up and down stream O2 sensors for my wife's Equinox before giving up and buying the real ones local. Drove me crazy with codes and lean/rich fuel conditions lol. Glad it worked out for you with the timing belt, that could have ended very badly.

Sorry to hear about this issue, I don't understand why ebay and amazon won't remove this sellers selling fake oem Honda timing belt kits.. I myself also had one of those install and after seen and reading all of the people that had issues and belts breaking I went ahead and remove the whole kit and replace it with a dayco belt and Aisin water pump and tensioner and koyo idler and bearing.. I only had 2k miles on this ebay replica kit before I decided to remove it, I did not felt safe driving around on that.. for 2k miles the belt actually look bad like if it had way more miles then that, I am glad I remove it.
Wow, you made the right decision to remove that counterfeit kit from Ebay, just in time. I wish I had known about that problem, to have saved my '05 Honda Odyssey. Best to take off plastic covers and inspect the belt. It takes 10 minutes. Or just take it down and replace as necessary. Belt tensioner and water pump would be cheaper than the whole kit with sprockets and gears

99.99% of the time when a acura or honda timing belt failed is due to the failed tensioner.
Sometime the tensioner failed one time and worked again within seconds or minutes, you would not know. Some will failed directly and you will see it failed.
Most time the tensioner failed within seconds, the belt become lose within the second and slide its way out of place and get jam up by the crank gear or xam gear , what will cause a broken belt.
A lot of people are reporting counterfeit Honda parts coming from eBay, resulting in premature failure.

Me and my dad put a "OEM" timing belt kit from ebay in my 2006 pilot. Well guess what just broke.... we are hoping the damage was minimal like yours was. Where would you suggest buying the new belt and tensioner from? Also did you replace the ebay pullies or just leave them in.
95% of the claimed "oem" honda kits on ebay and amazon are fake, very well faked, these cheap knockoffs last anywhere from 5-50k miles, i have seen this happen too much, ( 14-18 incidences per year) if the price is too good to be true it is !!! buy oem from the dealer

KT Tangos don’t pull your heads just yet. Set your engine in time and check compression on your cylinders. You my get lucky as I did or you may have bent valve on one head only. If that’s the case you will need to pull only one head off. Hope this make sense. Thank you
KY Home Garage ya i did that, 0 and low compression on 4 out of 6 so i put it at TDC, removed belt and started disassembly. Cant get exhaust off, bolts are rusty and half size they shud be. Tried heat n PB blaster. Gona order sum gearwrench bolt biter sockets.

A shop close by had this happen to them once almost exact same failure as yours. He used a genuine belt. Also there is a huge amount of counterfeit “Honda” parts on amazon and eBay lately. I have been using mitsuboshi belts for 10 years with zero comebacks. Pulleys are always koyo and aisian tensioner and pump. Glad you got lucky man.

@@kyhomegarage3430Burning oil is usually worn piston rings. That won’t effect driving at all I recommend just topping the oil off every 2-4 weeks and you’ll be set to keep driving I do that in my brothers honda prelude
Did you turn the rear camshaft by hand to line it up? The one on front you said it was right on but the rear. Same happened to my wife's van I'm in the process of removing timing covers.

@@kyhomegarage3430 is not going to hit the pistons? I have done timing in this engine before but the belt wasn't broken so I put it at TDC but this one broke so I wasn't sure if I can turn the camshafts by hand. I was thinking on removing rockers so all the valves are close then turn the cams.

I just bought. A 2009 pilot noticed the timing belt sittin on service slot are not spinning only serpentine belt rolls over but timing belt doesn’t roll over
I've seen several of these pilots in my shop after someone replaced their own timing belt. And almost every time the only thing they replaced was the belt. Answer me this question. Did you also replace the guide bearings and the tensioner? I bet you didn't and that is why the new belt failed. Sometimes you don't have to replace the bearings but that tensioner piston and the tensioner should always be replaced when replacing the timing belt it usually comes as a kit if you bought from a reputable source.
Had this happen on an interference Hyundai 4 cylinder and it turned out that there was engine damage from the failure. Have an 05 by honda in the ahop now with the same issue involving a broken belt with less than 20k miles since it's replacement. Got my fingers crossed that there's no head damage

You just line up your cam and crank and install a belt. Its the same way as you would have to do you changing head gasket.👍
I have a honda ridgeline broke timing belt front camshaft is at 12 oclock on the money, back camshaft is at 6 oclock from timing mark, and crankshaft is at 3 oclock from timing mark. How do go about the lower crankshaft cw or ccw? And back camshaft cw or ccw to get it lined back up?

He asked if the crank cam relation passed non danger angle what would be say 60 degree and one of two cams went say 100 degrees off to crank than you cannot return it back without piston hitting valve. Yours answer is ok only if you get lucky.

This is your lucky, lucky day. Had visions of bent valves, twisted con rods and God knows what else. This deserves a celebration night out. Beware of items claiming to be genuine. Seen identical Toyota items on Ebay, one oem and the other pretending to be. I challenge any tech to spot the difference. Everything including numbers and official colours were matching. The only giveaway was very small writing, made in China. For critical parts, such as timing and sensors, use certified parts from above average reputable company or next time there may not be such a happy ending. Learned this lesson from experience.

Interference engines should be banned for passenger vehicles, don't need such close tolerances for a road engine.
Hey man I have the same issue timing belt broke front cam shaft is on time 12 o clock, back camshaft is at 6 oclock, and lower crankshaft is 3 ocloc. Timing belt snapped due to leaking weeping water pump? how did you get the back camshaft and lower crankshaft realigned? Did you just realign them seperate I don't know any other way to go about other then get your timing arrow marks back where they need to be did you go clockwise ccwseems like I could go ccw on lower crankshaft being its not far from 12 oclock on the mark and maybe cw to back camshaft to get it realigned hope I get er done like you that would be great!
Turn your camshaft left or right to line up your mark. If it gets hard to turn turn the other way.

I bought a gates timing belt kit for my 2008 Odyssey (same engine as this pilot) and the belt broke after 69k miles. Idler, tensioner pulley, and water pump all seized at the same time. Never seen that before, but I put in all Honda parts from the dealer and it started and ran just like in this video. So thankful

Bought a Timing belt Kit From ebay May las year OEM as it seems on the packages. Installed, Today April 17 2022 Belt Fail at NJ TurnPike at 70 MPH. Very scary sound.😢.
Had it towed to a local Mechanic. He said when this happens it is more common missive damage on the internal of the engine. I could put a Timing belt, but not guarantee it will last or even run at all.
Recommend me to Replace the whole engine. After seeing in this, i see no difference at all.

Unfortunately that is tru. Until you put engine back in time with new timing belt you will not know what damage has been done to your engine.☹️
So, if you replace with used engine, you will want to timing belt on it with install. So do the timing belt, labor cost is your risk
How did you align it without the belt?
You just need to align your cam and crank pulleys with timing marks and install timing belt. Same procedure as you would have to do if you changing head gasket.

broke the timing belt in my old 97 pass port about 10 or 15 years ago ......... and was able to just replace it ...... no damage.

There's a lesson to be learned. CHEAP GETS EXPENSIVE. most of the time on-line parts are counterfeit to look like OEM. When you can buy a part for a fraction of the cost of OEM, QUESTION THAT.
Dayco actually had a recall on a certain date-range of tensioners they made for exactly this problem; leaking cylinder leading to failure. I actually had one of these tensioners on my 2010 pilot that did the same thing. Fortunately I heard the timing belt banging one of the cam sprocket covers and caught the problem before it got out of hand. My bet is that the tensioner on this pilot failed and the belt got physically caught on the forward cam sprocket and it literally ripped the belt apart. I think that if this were the case, the crank and cam would stop moving because of the jammed belt, which protected the valves. As this IS an interference motor, no stems were bent etc. Lucky for absolute sure!! Those belts are super tough and you sister's timing belt looks totally ripped. There was a lot of force involved in this failure - luckily it was so easily repaired : )

Why would you ever mess around with timing belt quality? Honda parts, Honda service when it comes to critical components.
You should have had the belt analyzed and compared it to a known Honda belt. From what keeps happening with all these so called genuine Honda Parts off Ebay, the online photos that show the parts show all Honda but several mechanics have already found that the actual parts are not Honda but they are all stamped Honda.

I have seen this before. Parts bought on eBay may or may not be boot leg regardless of labels. Better to take a second mortgage and go to the dealership. Sorry, very sorry!

I just did plugs on mine 66,000 miles on the plugs engine seemed to be running fine no misfires,But the porcelain on #2 spark plug was broken off and i guess it went into the cylinder i put a bora scope down the cylinder and the valve had some pretty good gashes in it and was darker then the other cylinders But it still runs fine I didnt do a compression ck. im thinking the cylinder deactivation is the cause I bought from the original owner it has 177000 miles with the cylinder deactivation still enabled

Same thing just happened to me but i must have somehow gotten a Shit Belt😐 it also tore off the timing belt stopper and the lower cast aluminum piece it bolts too. I will jb weld it and buy new stoppee n belt😐 But its 1 in 10 million thar theres no valve damage in interference engines☹️ Just like yours Everything looks good even my tensioner
Just had a mechanic change mine in May 2022 and was not fitted correctly, trashed engine which he will have to pay for !. Happy Days lol
Great video, primary failed part was the tensioner. The belt snapped when the slack worked over to the wrong side then snapped back. Tensioners are unreliable, I've read some OE tensioner fail at less than 5K miles. I use the Gates Blue Kevlar reinforced belt. A company called P2R makes a manual tensioner I'll install next time I do this. Honda added Kevlar to the belt teeth in 2010 but I gather Gates went full Kevlar in the chords also and what I'm running now.
Run a synthetic oil in both the engine and trans. Run a 0-10W-30 change at 10K, change the filter every 5K. Replace the PCV Valve or clean and check every 40-50K miles, the most overlooked under the hood.
You dodged a bullet on this one with no bent valves but replacing valves is a 15 minute problem with parts and tools in hand, heads off. I had to replace both cams at 265K, dealer wanted 2,500 per head + labor. It cost me 650 in the garage. You don't have to pull the heads to swap them out.

My brother works at Honda dealer and breaking a t-belt doesn't always bend valves on interference engine. My Civic snapped at idle and it was fine😁
Had a 99 Honda Civic and my belt snapped going 60+mph, no damage to the engine, really lucky on my part and was able to fix it
@@EpicMel0ns I guess the question everyone would have is how? How could there be no damage if this happens at thousands RPM? Those cylinders and valves seem bound to clash. Happy for you that there wasn't damage though.
Nola Guy yeah the shop said that it might not be worth fixing cause of that, and that we’ll just waste money on it for no reason since they thought the internals were damaged, we took the chance and told them to do it anyway risking it cause my brother really wanted to keep the car, I did keep good care of it(besides the belt) and by some miracle they manage to get it going again cause the engine was still good somehow. If that ain’t proof of how durable Honda engines are I don’t know what is lol
Always always always replace the timing belt hydraulic tensioner on 02 and up v6 Hondas when doing timing belt and use oem parts

You are probably talking about the serpentine belt. The Timing belt breaking that many times would have ruined your engine.

Maybe a cheap water pump or pulley's but considering how much is riding on that belt (no pun intended) it's not worth taking the chance. I'd opt for the Gates blue racing belt.

That's why I would never own a vehicle with a timing belt instead of a timing chain.
In that case don’t ever buy OHC engines driven by timing chain because plastic guides will brake at some point.

Why is it so difficult for honda to use timing chains in their V6 interference engines? You dont hear toyota users talking about routine changing of timing belt. Toyota has since stopped making engines with timing belts. What is stopping honda from transitioning to chains in their V6 engines?
