I really loved the review especially the photo side of it, regarding the R5 and R6 overheating you did not cover the topic as detailed as the rest of stuff (I understand that cause these tests are time consuming on another level), for example with 1.1.1 firmware the outside temperature influences more, to a degree where the overheat will not happened if the outside temperature is lower than 15 degrease C at all and its preventable with a external cooling device (small usb ventilator will do, until some third party solutions apear), also with the choice of using an external record device you can use it in 4kHQ mode without the overheating, external recording is something that happens often at professional shoots. Also the R6 has a better cool down times than the R6 and cools down while using 1080p modes and taking photos. Regarding sharpness in video R5 also has a 4K crop mode(close to super 35) that is a decent quality and similar to HQ mode regarding detail and it does not overheat. Interesting video, thanks to share it. Which of both Sony A7 IV and Canon R6 cameras would you suggest to buy to make 4K documentaries only (NO stills)? Thanks for your advice.
Awesome lengthy review Ralph! For the R6 is it better to use UHS-II cards or would it still be okay with UHS-I? The main issue probably towards the video side with the UHS-II, the photos can handle UHS-I think.
Thanks for a thorough and straight to the point review! I’m wondering if the R6 can playback images whilst writing to the buffer after a long burst of stills? It’s something that’s slowed me down at events wanting to quickly check just-shot photos, and even affects a lot of recent models including 80D and 5D IV so if you can confirm if R6 can do that it would be greatly appreciated!
Great review! Love my R AND my R5. Have been shooting with the R5 for about 2 1/2 months now, and it fits perfectly in my photo and video workflow. I have never had an overheating warning, and I shoot a lot of interview type footage and corporate stuff. The footage from both cameras works perfectly with the C100 and C200 footage we shoot as well. I love Canon’s ease of use, ergonomics, out-of-camera colours, and professional support - and glass! EF glass works natively on the Rs, and the RF glass is amazing! I also own Fujifilm, recently had Lumix, and shoot at work (day job) with a GH5, and C100/200 combo. I always bring my Canons though! So many great cameras to choose from! Just go shoot!
Thanks. Great review, I am looking to purchase either R5 or R6. How is R6 1080P and 4k normal video quality compared to R5? And what is R6 video recording time limit?
1080 and normal 4K are pretty much the same but the only difference is you only get IPB on the R6. They didn't overheat while shooting normal 4K 24p for me.
Great comparison! Just a question: what about the battery life. Is it true that the a7iii has almost the double of the battery life compared to the r6? (Videomaker perspective) Thanks!
Thanks, if I remember correctly, the Sony lasts about an hour longer while shooting 4k, but the Canon lasts about 20 mins longer while shooting 1080. I don’t know how it is now with the latest firmware but the R6 also overheated a lot while shooting 4K after around 50 mins.
Super useful thx. :) Guess another upgrade from the R is the IBIS which is useful in low light / events work etc. I also wonder how well the 24-70 f4 resolves on high resolution sensors. Is IBIS really a game changer? I currently own an RP and was thinking about selling it and getting an R6 for IBIS alone, the other improvements are also great, like the uncropped 4k. What are your thoughts on IBIS?
Depends on what you shoot or how you shoot. I never really cared about it but It’s good for some short handheld videos and long exposures up to 1 or 2 seconds.
i have seen in other reviews Canon's eye-tracking working very fast but the camera still doesn't focus on the subject. i am curious if you experienced anything like that.
Thumbs up; already subbed. Easy to watch for a longer review. RE the R6, seen some troubling reviews with autofocus (surprising to me) and color (red-yellow shift). Potato Jet among others is seeing some issues. Some of it might be due to backlighting. Have you seen any difference with the R6? Also, Panasonic's S5 seems very interesting, particularly for video. If you ever get your hands on one, it would be interesting to see that compared. Interesting comparison with 4K video with the R vs R5 & R6. I have the R and it seems it's video resolution is quite good when compared (also the Sony A7r4 which surprised me).
Phenomenal review! Image quality and autofocus is so similar now it really comes down to camera bodies and functionality. I have an A7III. I love what it does and absolutely hate using it. Sony really needs to step it up with their bodies and functionality. Canon bodies are on a completely different level.
As someone who has the SIII and my old A7III getting the R6 would be dumb for me, even if a lot of the photography features are better. Nothing in canon comes close to the SIII without either costing more (c70), or overheating (R5). I need the A7IV pronto. Regarding the Ergos, I think the SIII is perfect. I have fairly big hads, but I'm willing to sacrifice the ergos of canon for the smaller body size of sony. My backpack can be smaller, and i can afford to have larger lenses in a said bag with a smaller body. Also I see a lot of new A7III going on sale frequently for 1799 just deal hunt!
Really helpful, thanks! I just returned a recently purchased Canon RP due to feeling its dynamic range was just too poor (I do a lot of landscape photography). So do i spend a LOT more to get the R6, or get a sigma lens adapter and go with Sony (currently $800(!) less than the R6). Gotta decide in the next day, as i have an RF 24-105 from a separate store that i gotta request an RMA for, or keep! ;-)
Thanks, I think it depends on what lenses you want to use with it and which body design you like better. The A7III is probably the best value right now and Sony has more native lenses available at the moment but I find the R6's body more comfortable to use.
I use the 6D MKII and it hasn't broken down on me once. I'm considering grabbing the R6 and using it for photos and 4KHQ/ 1080P. You have to save some cash for HDs, cards and updated batteries.
So.... let me think... besides ISO the Canon R5 performs similarly to the 7RIV... it’s been reported that the 7RIII has better ISO performance than the 7RIV and comparable image quality, so, in conclusion the 7RII which has the same sensor and almost the same IQ of the R7III and sells brand new today for $1200, it’s the greatest bargain for photography and non-pro video. Excellent!
Indeed....”Go out and shoot and stop watching camera reviews!” Best advice in a long while!

a little higher preference for quality photos.
one of our senior suggested us to go for mirrorless in canon or sony both for video and photo shoot..
when i compared the difference inbetween 5D mark -iv, eos R and eos R5...
mainly i observed that the number of focus points varies from camera to camera...
where
eos R have 5655
focus points
5D mark -vi have 61
focus points
and
eos R5 have 1053 focus points
I dont know how far having more focus points plays key role irrespective of having 15 mega pixel lesser than eos R5

or need to look at Sony a7R IV

Very detailed and well-done comparison 👍👍.
What about canon lense prices
Very informative and helpful review! Thank you!!
Great review and comparison of the bodies. Thank you!
Brilliant, detailed and comprehensive review. Must have taken you a considerable amount of time to produce, thank you.
Excellent review!
You know we were waiting for your review
Great comparison thankyou for your time and effort.
I need a mirrorless camera. The Canon 6d mark 2 keeps breaking down on me. :c
Excellent!
Excellent review, Hyun. Thanks.
Is it true the photo Raws on the R5 are only 50mb?
Usually lower around 45
