Ok just finished a pull out drawer set up in my Tacoma shortbed. It’s really for tools as I don’t have a cap. The one issue is the reduced depth of my truck bed and no where to walk. Now I see this absolutely genius idea and I’m goin to scrap everything and start over so I can do it like yours. And the ladder ide is amazing too. Although I may just buy a $35 tailgate ladder on amazon so I can keep the middle of bed open all the time. The one idea I had which I think was original was I used roofing rubber bought at Ace Hardware for 12 bucks and stapled it to top of drawer covers so it waterproofed the top and made for great grip and keeps anything stored on top from sliding. Also added to the color as I painted the drawers flat black to match bedliner. If I can ever find a five foot cap (Tacoma ones that size seem impossible to get aftermarket ) I could convert set up to accommodate camping. Thank you Zack for the inspiration 💪🏻👍🏻
I can't believe someone stole my fix for you !! But I have 2 lol. Stolen one was the hammock idea, but it comes with fond memories. 1963 and we had a Ford econoline van my dad made 2 hammocks that went side 2 side. We made a trip from California to Missouri. Big SMILES !! 2nd thought for a solution is to use a 2x4 runner along each side by the window but sitting on the truck, put some rubber along bottom so it won't slip and screw from the top of plywood to the 2x4 possibly put a brace between the two 2x4 s but far enough away that you don't hit it rolling over. Thanks for sharing your videos, Rodney
My first thought when I saw your first bedding arrangements, "I hope his kids are past the bed wetting phase." You did a nice job with that setup. It has given me an idea for our 15 passenger van.
Looks very functional, please keep us all updated on the progress of this project. On my dads pick up, he made some small cabinets right as you enter the shell for more storage. Just an idea
Nice work Zach. I've also built my own drawer set up in a couple of vehicles and you don't quite realise how much work is involved till you start. Virtually every piece is custom measured and fitted. Yeah..love you work. Nice! :)
The ladder is impressive how it pops out. I don’t know how 4 people even is little kids can fit in there! There are truck tent add ons you can buy that would give extra space and protections from bugs, rain too.
Like your ideas. Especially the slot idea.I made a pull-out recently but didn't think to do the contour for the wheel-well, great idea. I went to Harbor Freight and bought some steel roller ball rollers, low profile, mounted on underside of slide-out (had to measure exactly so they would run in the channels of the bed liner. Helps reduce friction but they do occasionally come out of the grooves, your slot idea would keep it aligned. Thanks.
You can put these table leg grommets that mount flat at the very edge bottom end and screw in the legs to support your slide out when out . I have seen this done with hardware from Ikea for little bedside tables
GREAT VIDEO, THANKS FOR SHARING! Im sure others have said this, but I cant get caught on YT reading all of the comments, LOL.. That ladder you built could easily serve as a support if you made it a tad bit shorter, so it sits at a 90 degree to the slide out. Add some scrap wood to the inside walls of the ladder (2X4's) to reinforce it and you would have as stable a surface as you could get, without sacrificing the intended function as a ladder.
Good job I've seen many truck fixed up love the way you did yours. I deff would like to fix one like that if I ever get me another truck mine blew loved that truck. Now got suv which I could still do that in it. So depends if I keep or swap or sell and get truck. But great video y'all have fun and god bless
Hey Zack Andy from New York came across your videos surfing RUclips trying to build some pull outs for my adventure van anyways awesome videos. Love your mild humor .triple thumbs up. Happy trails
I like that pull out ideas. You got me thinking on that awning, may make a canoe rack with awning perchs on ends, but I'm going out the back & sides with mine.
I think from now on I'm just going to watch and see what you come up with. This is why I have enjoyed watching your channel all along. Look forward to hearing from you. Take care brother.
His first effort for a place for the kids to sleep reminds me of that episode of Seinfeld where Kramer was renting drawer space for Chinese guys to sleep in but the humidity of the sauna made the wood swell and the drawers wouldn't open, I do like the hammocks though.
Ingenious. You did a great job. Tweak it a bit after a few uses and start building them for sale. There are a lot of van dwellers that would buy. One big suggestion though; Don't serve beans for the evening cook out.
I know this is an older video but another thing that works good to slide the drawers on is old cutting boards the white ones that are made from that plastic type material.
Stumbled across this video - cool build! I think your drawer design with the incorporated ladder is really nice and would work well if someone could market it
what does the setup look like now? I've purchased a camper shell tent for our 2500 ram, have yet to use it but would be a lot better than the cloth door. I was thinking of sending it back to purchase a tent that goes over the camper and onto the ground to make for more room which i think would work great for the boys!
When you finish that design. Some type of finish on the wood if it's bees wax or something else. Finish your door for the back of it. Have your stove and everything all set and finished in the design you could get $1,8000 - $2,000 dollars for every unit you build. Building that for a full size Chevy truck or extra long bed you could get probably around $3,000 for every unit you build and install.
Hopefully that doesn’t cause your bed to rocks loose maybe figure the thread pitch buy a longer bolt so you can use a jam but to keep the bed solid as well
Thanks Underground, I’ve used it once and have a long weekend camp out planned for Memorial Day and will hopefully be able to give a fair assessment afterwards. The first time seemed to be really good.
you can lift with the lift eyes strait up, but you can not lift from the side, it will break at the shoulder if the eye is laying flat. If the eye is plumb up and down and on its side you can lift a little more with it , but it will also break. It is my biggest worry when I am setting I-Beam legs on buildings. Getting them from laying on the ground to standing up sucks.
Right, my beef was just the fact that an item marketed as a “lifting eye” carries a warning not to use it for lifting. Utterly ridiculous. I could understand if, like you pointed out, it carried a warning that said something like “do not apply side load to this lifting eye or it will fail”.
Great job but you should really put some temporary support legs on those especially because they are not treated they will warp when they get wet and split water seal will work as well
I can’t believe the slide out drawers don’t have hinged lids on them so you can open them for storage... I saw you cut holes in them but I thought the whole point of video was so you could use them, haha lol... Maybe you’ll be able to get out your caulk gun too. It’s worth a try. 👍🏻
still, remember the camping box my dad build for my mom it had all the thing we need for camping we had tent trailer at first, now they have a motorhome to travel with the funning thing about the box they still have the same dishes they started with and the pots as well too we all have pull or 5 wheel trailers now too and when we all go out camping together we fill the campground up now too family has grown much bigger now too love the group sites in the campground very use a much better use for the weekend fun
Very interesting setup and I like the fact that you're using a liquid fuel Coleman stove instead of propane. If that truck is a gasser you could easily have spare fuel for the truck or the appliances if you use Liquid fuel. Unfortunately the trucks at diesel all bets are off. I am curious why you didn't go the obvious route and just have the kids sleep in the cab of the truck? That's what we did when I was a kid
Yeah, I've read that there are some stoves out there that will burn diesel which would be optimal but for now I'm of the "use what you've got" school of thought. as to having the kids sleep up front, the idea dragging the car seats out along with anything else thats in the back seat in order to lay it down didnt appeal to me so I went for stuffing us all in the back lol. so far so good.
@@ZackOfAllTrades Sorry about the super slow reply. Just came across your video again. I hadn't considered car seats. Sorry kind of kidless so no experience there... Yeah, Diesel stoves exist. They tend to be spendy, and honestly, are kind of hard to use. At least the old ones were... I'm still loving my old Coleman stove. From 1984. Yeah I agree on the use what you got philosphy.
I'm trying to put a 5 ft x 6 ft truck top on a 4 ft x 6 ft military style steel utility trailer . Any suggestions on how to make the sides wider and taller so theres room to sit up inside and still be able to make a slide out under- neath for storage unless maybe what I was thinking of doing is making outside shelves/ lock storage boxes outside to extend the length out enough ( 6 in ea side ) to securely attach to the shell only problem I am having really is the back door ? And how to make it taller on the sides . How can I make a door without losing the pop up window

Much respect, I’m sure that your family and you will be making wonderful memories. Hopefully I’ll meet you 1 day on the trails! Safe travels.

Truly the most innovative use of space that I have ever seen.
What a cool dude. Wish i had these kinds of skills. What a lucky kid to have such a neat dad.
My first thought when I saw your first bedding arrangements, "I hope his kids are past the bed wetting phase."
You did a nice job with that setup. It has given me an idea for our 15 passenger van.
lol, yeah that could be troublesome. "why is it raining in here?"

I certainly will do so Greg
Nice work Zach. I've also built my own drawer set up in a couple of vehicles and you don't quite realise how much work is involved till you start. Virtually every piece is custom measured and fitted. Yeah..love you work. Nice! :)
Yeah that's the truth! I was a little surprised how intricate it got once I really got into it.
The fact that you are trying to work your system with your kids? ----- Kudos to you Sir!
The hammocks are a stroke of genius!! I have so much truck envy now, I've always wanted to do this.....
First I probably need a truck....... lol
Thanks Glen, I thought it was a good way to solve the problem!
I freaking LOVE the CAPTIVE BOLT for the slider. Sheer brilliance :D
I've never done any wood working in my entire life, but I'm going to attempt to make one sliding draw table like you have. Wish me luck
Nicely built looks like it will hold up for you and your family safe camping Zack.
That's what I'm hoping :)
👍nice👍
While I NEVER “got” outdoor camping much less “tail-gating”, I can & do appreciate the overall skill you put in this/your project. Good job👍
Hey thanks a bunch MP!

Pretty cool. I was wondering about using the side compartments for storage, but you nailed it. Thank you.
Thanks Bruce
that's awesome, and if you didn't get enough footage, thats a good thing, means you and the family were enjoying it and each other, well done
That's pretty much what I thought!
Nice build setup. Great ideas and great job on the video.
Thanks Waterdog, I'm really happy with how it turned out!
I love it!! Exactly the sort of idea I’m looking for but going to tweak it a bit, I love the hammock that is an awesome touch

Great Dad enjoyed.. All for the kids
You have amazing skills. What a wonderful build.
Yay ! This is the best thing iv seen in truck camping. I want one now !
#1 Dad.... kids are going to remember this for years.
That’s very kind of you to say, I sure hope they do.

Thanks onelung(McLung?) I have mad a point not to have the musical fruit on our campouts :)
This is the first of your videos that I've seen. Looks like I've got some catching up to do. Great content.
That's badass! we just got 2 ft of snow here, but I'd still use it.
might have to dig out for the ladder though lol
Came out nice. I'm guessing it will be providing lots of good memories for you and your family...
Thanks Bill, that's what I'm hoping
Nice design. All that matters is that its functional you can make it a little perty later
Your video randomly popped up in my feed. Love the ingenuity. Entertaining as well. Subscribing.

Thanks Todd! It works pretty well
"BRAVO"
You are Dad of the Year!!!!
Thank You for keeping it real and fun also! You have a new viewer.
Love watching the designs that fellow parents come up with.... more practical for family travel.. also, you're very funny. Thank you. Chicken feed. 😅😅
Clever design. Thanks for sharing.

Hey brother, nicely done. Lets go camping!
Your desert southwest looks waaaaaaaaayyyyyy greener than my desert southwest lol. Cool camper.
Cool design. Enjoyable video. Thanks!
Hey Suz I'm glad you enjoyed it. It was fun to build and has been a lot of fun to use.
Zack _ GENIUS Buddy! Love the concept Thx!
Haha wow. I never would have thought I'd see you on here man. I've been wanting to build one of these
I like it alot. I wish I was able to come up with those ideas.

That's what I grew up with too, a camp box that my Grandma had made long ago.
That's awesome I love it I subscribed to your channel I'll be watching for more thanks for sharing
Thanks a lot Andy, I really appreciate it.
good job !
How long is the bed of the truck and your hammock? I did not think that was possible but apparently I was wrong.
Rad!!!! cool set up!!!!
I really enjoyed this! Nice work on the project with some really good ideas. Also, nice job on the video and editing.
Pretty cool slide out there, looks like it should work---
Thanks Beerbelly, I'm thinking it will.
Pretty cool. Subscribed.
Samurai Zack, scourge of Watermelon Demons. Carry on oh noble warrior.
That melon didn't even see it coming! Take care Al
Have fun my friend👍
4 people sleeping there?? Wow. Do not eat beans. You might suffocate. Otherwise, just brilliant, as usual.
Too late, he is already full of beans ;-)
Yeah that'd be a bad way to go out, methane death lol
Remember, chili dogs bark at night
Just found this! Love your creative ingenuity! Its been over a year, how do you like it? What changes have you made?
Man, after the first one I was quite literally asking myself how the #$% is he going to put this thing together? Very cool!
lol you and me both
Good job bro
You are full of inspiration. Thanks
Thanks a lot 1fanger, that means a lot!
Doesn't backing those bolts off loosen the truck bed and make it vibrate and bounce?
Happy to be 1000 like. Great video thanks for making it.
Cool build...👍👍👍👍 any more updates on the build?
Did a nice job.
a wrestlers' mat is extremely comfortable and yet super thin but somewhat pricey just a thought because this is what I have used

Ok, you got wax on your cooking top, try put plastic strips under the bottom of your bed. It should help with slides and prevent damage.
i'm going to subscribe to your channel. You won me with the chicken feed counterweight joke. :)
Hey thanks for subscribing Nicholas. If you enjoy that sort of oddball humor you're in the right place!

You have a green KRS - I always wanted one of those!
Indeed I do :) she’s a dandy, my daily driver.
I would be jealous but my K1 is keeping me happy. Keep on riding. I enjoy your vids.
lol nice, glad to hear it!
Hammocks! AWESOME! Cheers brother... Chris.
Cheers Chris!
👍 makin’ it work.
Pretty nifty! How about a 2x6 along the Windows instead of 2x4? 2inches may give you enough fanny room.
It may do the trick
Love it, hammock in your truck.
The production quality of this video is for some reason screaming Good Eats. You’re like the Alton Brown of the outdoors.
Freakin geniuse work brother!! Uhhmazin work!!☝️☝️👍👍
