Is Terraria's Hive Pack actually BAD?

- In this video I investigate both the Hive Pack and the Honey Comb (and its upgrades), and see if they're actually worth using and when they should be used!

Hive Pack being able to possibly reduce DPS makes me question reality & further grows my hatred for the i-frames system in this game
The system is good in theory, but was implemented so poorly
Yo no way shyguymask I'm a huge fan of your vids especially the terraria no arrows keys
I mean, reworking it now might change the game too much that the balance breaks completely, ESPECIALLY for mods
Just mod em out that'd fix it
@Horbiflorbin You'd just have to move from global to static and nerf the affected weapons and accessories accordingly
i LOVE i-frames in this game
i LIKE bees in this game
i DISLIKE good coding in this game
I'm INDIFFERENT to this game
Global I-frames literally have NO reason to exist in Terraria. 😭
balancing reasons
Without global immunity frames most piercing weapons would be even more of a direct upgrade over their normal counterparts
Especially on multiplayer dude
@@june9914 I really dont see the disadvantage of using local i frames for everything (i frames for single projectile that prevents that one projectile from hitting multiple times). More summons should = more damage. More arrows should = more damage. Stronger bees should = more damage.
@@june9914 then they just use static s instead so they block themselves ??
This is incredibly detailed and informative...Though I fear a visit from ShyGuy in your very near future *ShUdDeR*
Also had no idea the Honey Comb spawns bees upon damage, Nor that the Hive Pack effect the Hornet minion, Both very good bits of info to of learned!
He has no reason to fear criticism because this video is actually (very) well researched unlike a lot of others that are straight up filled with misinformation lol.
Shyguymask only loves high quality testing and informations
Like me and kepples he always watching.
There's no reason for him to get angry at well researched channels
I kinda wish we had a variation of the hive pack for hard mode, one that could work with the Wasp Gun among other things, because i remember really enjoying using hive pack with bees knees and sometimes bee gun because it's just really fun to shoot an army of bees at enemies
Very underappreciated accessory and i wish they kinda change it's immunity frame system to buff it with melees and in general lol
Actually the hive pack has been updated to affect the wasp gun now
@corrymuth2997 oh huh neat
Still tho i wish we got a stronger variation lol
A lot of the Expert mode items are super underwhelming tbh, but Hive Pack definitely stands out for its incredibly specific use case. I didn't have the hard numbers but I already suspected the bees would interfere quite significantly with your damage due to the way piercing damage sources work in this game, so I figured it'd only be good if you're banking on bees as your main damage source, which is only realistic if you're spamming beenades on WoF or Skeletron.
I guess there's not much point in putting work into Expert-exclusive boss drops but it'd be pretty neat if the more obscure pre-HM items could at least get some progression into HM, if they already can't have generically powerful effects like Worm Scarf or Shield.
Yeah bone glove, mechanical cart, hive pack, shiny stone, and royal slime(spore sack and regal gelatin too kinda even though I’d say they are pretty useful) are so situational they just are worthless 90% of the time
I feel like a lot of them should be like Lucy where they become stronger with every boss defeated
I think it'd be neat if the hive pack gave EVERY weapon a chance to spawn bees on hit, kinda like a (hopefully) better version of the bone glove. Even if the bees only dealt flat damage, it could still scale way better into hardmode instead of being limited to a small handful of pre-hardmode items. Plus, the gimmick of spewing hundreds of bees at your enemies is just really fun.
...y'know, assuming they fix the issues first.
never seen you before but this is a really high quality video mate, nice work
how haven't you seen kepples from the hit (not really) series; survivor terraria
(i feel like "haven't you seen" is a wrong phrase, someone, correct me if this is actually wrong)
@@voiky752 it isn't
Love it when someone makes a high detailed and effort video on a accessory that I will never use (boomstick superior)
But the bees
@MilkBake blame the hornets for ptsbre
I think it would be great to have an added effect for the Hive Pack: a double jump functioning the same as the ones from Rocket Boots. It would actually make the player consider going for a bee build for the double jump, since they are in all cases outclassed by other weapons.
0:46 "... or are the Stardust Dragon for whatever reason."
The Stardust Dragon *has to* use local invincibility frames so that it can hit enemies with multiple of its segments at the same time. Otherwise it would be a godawful summon to use, since it'd function like shotguns with e.g. meteor shot *used to* function in the past, meaning that of all shotgun projectiles from the spread, only one would ever hit the enemy and the others harmlessly pass through.
Global invincibility frames are honestly outdated and shouldn't exist at all any more.
one thing worth noting is the giant bees are also faster than smaller bees, making it easier for them to catch up with faster bosses. this might not be significant if you already know the bosses well and can manipulate them well (for example expert skeletron), but could help new players a lot
although even then the hive pack is still roughly equivalent to a shark tooth necklace in terms of dps...
Some insight on why a number of weapons get a much smaller DPS gap with a damage build: the bees themselves face a downside from being big, their greater pierce. Piercing projectiles don't apply immunity frames on their last hit, so small bees deal 9 hits per second while large bees only deal 8. Against high defense targets, big bees still give more DPS due to their better damage, but as armor penetration and damage multipliers increase (and especially if defense reaches 0), big bees start losing their edge entirely. A Ruthless Bee Gun with 9% damage bonus or Mythical with 20% damage bonus (Ruthless rounds up damage while Mythical rounds down due to shenanigans, given how often the thing reaches the limit I'd say Ruthless is better) should start to deal more damage without the hive pack than with when fired on a target with 0 defense.
In practice, big bees and the greater number of bees are useful against Skeletron due to hands and high defense even with necklaces, and better tracking probably helps too. I'd expect a different story against Deerclops, though.
I like how well put together this vid was, and now I'm informed about terraria's bee mechanics. thank you john graph
4:10 RISK OF RAIN MUSIC HEARD RAHHHH
this is awesome! I often use the honey comb accesories, so this is definitely going to change how/when i choose to use them
great work on this video, hopefully re-logic sees and gives hive pack and bees a buff so they don’t stop other damage sources (not bee nades though, those are strong already)
This was very well produced and has excellent research, great stuff man
So thats why my friend didnt want me to use wasp gun for moonlord
No
why are you using a post plantera weapon on moon lord anyway
no aim
this man does NOT miss.
Relogic needs to change this on Terraria 2, that i-frame thing is just tomfoolery
As someone who only ever plays tank melee I've only equipped the Honeycomb a few times early game and the pack to boost beenades. Interesting video.
Only expert item people like is shield of cthulu it seems.
work scarf and brain of confusion are decent items
Hive pack sometime not worth and sometime worth.
For melee against a skeletron, the hive five is really good option but you have to sacrifice one accessory slot for hive pack but still worth it. Same for ranger when using Bees knee against skeletron and beenade against wof if you want safety strategy.
Unlike bee gun, there's better weapons for it, Demon scythe and gray zapinator are much better and no need to sacrifice one accessory slot for hive pack.
And for hornet, the 2 Flinx, 2 frog and 1 imp is still the best combo and you also don't need to sacrifice a slot for hive pack.
Good good
funnily enough bees were the only way i could kill wall of flesh and to this day i don't know how i did it
Was literally just doing a Mage playthrough, just killed Queen Bee and was wondering if I should sacrifice a slot for the Hive Pack. Thanks for the informative and stupidly well-timed video showing up in my recommendations lel.
They just need to make it so bees create tiny weak explosions every 5 frames instead of doing contact damage. That would fix all the immunity frame nonsense. Also they should make the hive pack spawn 3 bees every 10s when an enemy is reasonably close to the player.
As is, it seems like the only reason to use the Hive Pack is with the bee armor + hornet wand + bees knees.
sounds to me like a change from global to local s on the bees but also reduce their damage a quite a bit would help quite a bit
they don't need another damage nerf, they're already outclassed by some pre-boss weapons (boomstick comes to mind)
@@carbonmonteroy don't think you realise how much of a change going from global to local s will be
it means each bee spawned will be able to hit no matter the amount of them being spawned
so long as they can reach te target, they basically won't despawn due to lifetime
This was extremely well made and informative, good video
Im not the biggest fan of Hive Pack conceptually because when it comes down to it, its just an alternative Avenger emblem that only very few weapons benefit from
Strange that big bees dont use local frames. But I guess thats the nature of limiting FPS because for something like hivecomb it could deal insane damage
ngl ive never used the hive pack bc i feel like theres just better options at the time when you can kill the queen bee. Especially because in order to make full use of it you would need a full bee set.
They could have just made it so with that thing equipped you would passively spawn bees all the time and it would have been good
As a player who sticks to the mage class, I have essentially learned that I need to change nothing in my current post-Queen Bee pre hardmode loadout.
I only really used it against the wall of flesh whenever i was using beenades and bees knees bow
With how few weapons are compatible with it im surprised it just doesn't have more unique reactions
Would make it a lot cooler if they got cool effects
used the hive pack to shred through WOF didnt know it was actually making it harder, oopsies
I don't knwo if it's worth mentioning but seems like some of the honecomb accesories effect stack, like you can wear different accesories with honeycomb in them, so possibly it could amke this item a little more worth it.
@@arigatoespacialsuperadmiti7316 I just meant that stacking the honey comb accessories don't spawn additional bees when hurt, but yeah their other effects should be able to be used in conjunction
I think The main conclusion from this video is that the stardust dragon staff should use global immunity frames
Really is interesting how many terraria youtubers use Rivals of Aether music.
JUELSVILLE!!!
underrated vid
I love bees in this game
Haven't really cared about this thing before but now I kinda do ngl
Whatever... go my -scarab- bee
Hive Pack update should make all spawned bees change from global to local immunity. Without it, bees use global
Someone should make a mod for an entire Bee class
There actually is one! It's called BombusApis
So basically I could solo Pre Hardmode with just Bees?
The Hive Pack is so good and I don't see why anyone wouldn't like if you're using a bee weapon. It's so good that if you're ever using a bee weapon in hardmode, I would even go as far to say as to replace your emblum with it. Its a nessecary for any bee based weapon.
THE BeES
@@MilkBake "Not the bees!"
if the next update don't fix it, i aint terraria next year
So what you're saying is... if I use it I can lower other people's damage?
Unfortunately for that scenario it only affects your own damage, since it doesn't change anything about others damage
risk of rain ost, rivals of aether ost, and youre playing terraria
i bet you play noita, and if you dont, that it would be a game youd enjoy...
This dude needs waaay more views
very good content you have done a good job
No matter how bad an accessory is, the royal gel is worse
I mean if you haven't explored the underground jungle after king slime, royal gel stops those pesky spiked jungle slimes from shooting at you allowing you to kill them with ease!
this vid is really good but the ror2 music hits diffirent
It's actually from ror, not ror2! Still quite like ror2 music and prob will feature that in videos too eventually.
This comment also reminded me that I never added the music in the description like I usually do...
@@Kepples my apologies how could i have done such a mistake (joke)
nice video 🔥
From my personal experience, the Hornet staff + hive pack is better than imp staff
Yes. The imps are slow and shouldn't be the only minions summoned in a group.
Interesting...
Now surely nobody would make a mod, or ask red, to fix it... because nobody uses the hive pa-
And why would you use other weapons with beegun or beebow or beenade?
Choose one, and others wont block you attacks
good i want more
For when you get it, the hive pack is kinda mid. It’ll get outclassed super quickly.
nice
ITS NOT BAD NOOOOO
I like bees
red logic pls fix 💔
bees
Man just remove I-frames by mods
Try the honey pack on video it's a lot better
?
@@Kepples search for what is that
@@SuushsJshsjsj the honey pack doesn't exist in vanilla Terraria, perhaps you were referring to the hive pack or the honey comb? Both of which I did cover in this video
bee-ps
Just make bee i-frames not global!!!
While it can reduce us high-level min-max players, if you're playing theme over min-max, making a Bee-themed character makes it a requirement.
Like MANY items, it's meant for specific builds and more for fun than function
nobody ever said the hive pack is bad what is bro on about ? 🙏😭
I am nobody ever🙏
(but yeah only mainly bad with bee keeper and for some i-frame shenanigans really, the title was just being a bit dramatic for RUclips's sake)
Please dont use the music from that car game. It is HORRIBLE
first
Does this mean that if in a multiplayer game multiple players use bee focused weapons they could actually be hurting other players' damage due to i frames?
Iirc only per-projectile-type (static) immunity frames are shared between players, and maybe not even those
Just tested this, and i-frames seem to be separated by player. So as an example if one player uses the Bee Gun with the Hive Pack for example, the other players can still use any of their weapons with no change in damage or issue whatsoever!
@@Kepples Does that apply if two players are both using the bee gun and hive pack?
@@neonjoe529 I don't see why multiplayer i-frames would work different for that specific combo, since they would already be separate per player.
