- Scott Toy Guru Neitlich dives into the slightly complex but always entertaining Origin of Hec-Tor Kurr, AKA Hordak Ruthless "Leader" of the Evil Horde. His origins, his banishment, his grand plans and his death at Skeletor's hands. It's all here! Plus his scheming older brother and a look at his concept art too!
Artwork by Tom Krohne used at 4:30 mark. Awesome work Tom.
Never was a huge fan of He-Man back in the days, but watching those videos, I realize what amazing lore this show had.
Quite epic!
@@spectorcreative1872 This is the sort of lore which could spawn a good tabletop roleplaying game/wargame. Look at Warhammer 40K... Is there any He-Man RPGs out there? I mean outside the one made in the 80s...
the show itself didn't have much coherent lore lol, but the minicomics and also all the "newer" stuff are all pretty solid
I always thought the original 4 horde-members where based on classic monsters with Hordak as a vampire, Grizzlor was the werewolf, Leech the creature from the black lagoon and Mantenna, as the least "obvious", as the Fly...
I suppose that could certainly been part of the original design idea.
Modulok = Frankenstein's Monster?
I always saw them as inspired by Skeletor and his minions: Hordak/Skeletor, Grizzlor/Beast-Man, Leech/Mer-Man, and Mantenna/Tri-Klops.
Interesting. I always saw Skeletor and his minions as Classic Monsters:
Skeletor: Skeleton
Evil Lyn: Classic Witch
Beast Man: Werewolf/Wolfman
Merman: Creature from the Black Lagoon
Trap-Jaw: Frankenstein

That is a great assumption!!!
Man, that was amazing with the chronological order of events. You summed it all up very well.
Glad it was easy to understand. I was afraid with so much stuff it might get mixed up
Wow, all the points of the storylines are coming together. I really need to get the comics and get caught up on this. Great video!!!

This entire story needs to be made into one big live action movie. 🎦
Make it happen Sony!
Wow, this is deep deep. I can see this surviving decades

From what i see, its alot of rewriting of the end point, starting with the battle that throws Hordak into Atheria. But, from that point on its alternate universe stuff. Alternate Dispondose. This is where the new 2018 She-Ra came into play.

So really, She-Ra actually has the more powerful arch enemy, plus Hordak has more troops, and She-ra has no Royal guard as back-up
She does though, she has many powerful princess and has the rebel forces.
From a certain point of view, yes
@@spectorcreative1872 From the way they interact, it seems Filmation intended for Skeletor to be the slightly stronger of the two in terms of personal combat ability and is the better planner, but Hordak has an army and Skeletor does not. That alone makes Hordak more dangerous.
Skeletor wins their fight on Horde Prime's ship one on one, and he always outsmarts Hordak, right from the first She-ra episodes where Hordak is introduced, but Hordak can buy him in robots and he knows it.
@@killingragethrowback Hordak was Skeletor's mentor.

Out here stringing all of the different stories together! Lol
It helps to have a spread sheet
These stories aren't a continuous arc. There are several different canons that are all retcons of each other. The comics have their own canon which is separate from the Filmation canon which is different from the 200x/MYP canon. Then there are other canons purely based on the toys. In the comic "Masters of Multiverse" the different canons are all acknowledged.
Nice. Masters of the universe revolution followed this almost perfectly. Nice to finally see this animated. So what's next? Despara vs He man, the resurrection of Hordak? Horde prime makes an entrance? Looking good story wise for season 3

The He-Man series (among others) was a major childhood inspiration for my 'Power of Omegus!' sci-fi trilogy I came up (Omegus, 'Supreme Emperor of the Imperium Empire' being the most powerful villain in all existence, who battles against the heroic scientist/special agent Dr Todd Roone of the W.D.F.) I'd love to see a crossover with He-Man & She-Ra if I ever write my story and if it becomes popular, Omegus would be the greatest threat to Eternia if he discovered that world (as he would be to any world that has the power that he craves)

I really enjoyed this video. It some ways, this was like the larger overall storyline of MOTUC. It left me with one nagging question though! Does Horde Lord have origins outside of MOTUC? Is he something adopted from the archives, or a more recent character?
If memory serves, it was the UK comics
They need to do a book collecting all the mini comics from the newer toy lines similar to the book they did with all the vintage ones.
I’ve been saying this for years
Once I met a northern German man at a hotel I worked at. He said his name checking in and I thought I missed something; I said “what’s your name again?”
“HORDAK!” He said in a thick German(?) accent.
Did you run and hide immediately?
@@spectorcreative1872 I had to check him in, I was surprised a man had the last name hordak. I had a hard time not laughing but I’m glad I didn’t or I would be pile of ash.
In another video, you said that He-Man and She-Ra cannot appear in media together, which is why there was no He-Man in the 2018 She-Ra cartoon. What about Hordak? Is he bound to the She-Ra universe as well?
Hordak is allowed because his toy shipped under the MOTU brand in the 80's. I know, its complicated...
Thank you for sharing the storyline.
I've always been a fan of princess of power since I was a kid because the storyline of evil vs good battle I felt was pretty awesome then watching GiJoe or transformers.
It was a great cartoon afternoon we once had
Warning. Do not type Hordak/Skeletor/He-man three way into a non-child safe google search
So noted.
How can I get these mini-comics?? They sound so good, but only the first few and in the big compendium.
Alas, DC has yet to reprint them. Let them know if this is something you want to see!
This was pretty interesting! I had no idea Hordak's OG design was inspired by a mask or that Bruce Timm drew the first comic about him. I'm a big fan of the latest iteration of Hordak and he has a completely different backstory. In this universe, Horde Prime is a cult leader as well as ruler of a massive empire and Hordak is a clone of his, who was thrown out of Prime's army for being disabled and therefore "worthless". Hordak wants to be accepted by Prime and tries to conquer Etheria by setting up a Horde army there, in the hope of impressing his "brother" and proving he isn't worthless. Scorpia, Catra and Octavia are amongst his army! Adora was raised in the Horde too, but defects after befriending Princess Glimmer of Brightmoon and her best friend Bow. Adora doesn't have a wicked cool battle suit/persona in the new one and certainly no buzzcut, though I can imagine some lesbians might wish she did. XD Adora forms the Princess Alliance with various royals in order to take down the Horde. An autistic princess named Entrapta gets accidentally left behind on a mission to the Fright Zone and Catra and Scorpia convince her to work for the Horde instead, as their technology expert. She starts working beside Hordak and finds out about his backstory and disability. She tells him not to be ashamed of his disability, having one herself, and that "imperfection is beautiful". Hordak falls in love with her and as a result, when Prime shows up again, he eventually kills his big brother to protect Entrapta, the woman who showed him he was worth something. It's such a beautiful love story! :)
I'm currently reading a fanfiction in which Hordak is Prime's literal brother and it's super good, especially when they find Etheria and meet lots of other familiar characters from She Ra!
Yeah, everything in this video predates the She-Ra Netflix show which went in a different direction
awesome
Right back at you
I always felt like Hordak was disrespected from the get go and was one of the biggest mismanaged characters of the whole line. I mean, they went to all this effort to create a guy who made a guy with a skull for a face seem tame by comparison. When the commercials introduced this new ultimate evil that even frightened Skeletor, I was totally on board.
So, did they take this instantly iconic design and personality and portrayed it as the ultimate evil? The biggest bad guy of all, worthy of training Skeletor and challenging both he and He-Man?
Nope, he was shuffled off to fight a bunch of rooted hair dolls and a guy with a heart on his chest. But the indignity didn't stop there! No, he was quickly demoted to second banana so he could cower to Horde Prime. His henchmen, who judging by the figures, were supposed to be bizarre and terrifying were quickly reduced to comic relief. Grizzlor wasn't a terrifying beast of legend, just another idiot. Same with Leech. And Mantenna, maybe one of the most f---ed up and scary figure designs in the line was reduced to nothing more than a clown. Modulok was like something out of John Carpenter's The Thing, but spent most of his time in front of a computer console.
And the disrespect didn't stop there. The 200X series was cancelled before we got to see Hordak truly arrive in his full glory. The comics mentioned in the video have him defeated by Skeletor. I mean the whole point of Hordak was that He-man had been defeating Skeletor time and again for the past couple of years and needed an adversary who really tested him. Yet Hordak was continually bested by Skeletor in just about every iteration, which torpedoed his whole reason for being.
Then even the toy line quickly forgot what he was supposed to be ... introducing King Hiss as the new ultimate bad guy. All of the sudden everything was Snakemen, and the Horde was kind of forgotten. Even guys like Blast Attack, who seemed like a hoard figure, were now Snakemen figures.
Yeah, the girls group kinda, well, see here: ruclips.net/video/GOONTAqPhjU/видео.html

This was awesome. What is this 2000xyou speak of ? How can I watch or read this storyline ? Thx
It is the Mike Young Production Animated series which ran 2001-2002. You can get it on DVD or it may be on a streaming service. I haven't kept up
The old filmation series also showed us that the apprentice has surpassed the master. Skeletor always seems to get the better of Hordak one on one or scheme for scheme, but Hordak has an army that Skeletor can't match and those resources keep him in the game.
And a rematch would be great
I think that both villains are a couple of hams and they try to upstage one another. The Secret of the Sword was a great movie and the action was really great. On some of the episodes, Earth was mentioned. It's too bad they didn't try to come here only in the live action movie
Pretty typical of 80's bad guys!
The funny part about all these He-Man videos explaining the origins and different characters and stuff is... if you watch the episode of "The Toys that made us" on Netflix that focused on He-Man... you'll see just how much they were just throwing shit at the wall to see what stuck as far as character design. All this explanation is post hoc now that geek culture is super mainstream & demands that everything have this in depth story behind it to justifyits existence. Everything has to be Tolkien or something... truth is... they were just selling plastic, it was never that deep. But I love hearing how they ended up having to piece all this stuff together into and make it into a universe.
They're doing the same thing with Star Wars I feel like. What was supposed to be a fun little romp about Space Samurai and Space Cowboys/Outlaws 40 odd years ago now has to be Hamlet or something... it ain't that deep.
Oh it is definitely true, and a big reason with Classics since that was an adult collector line we wanted to use that to flesh out the story more and make it more epic
More isn't always best ...too much of some can be a bad thing... like if you over feed a gold fish it will die ..
@14:05 what issue is that/ DCE masters #1?

Hordak was also the inspiration for Marvel's/X-men's Apocalypse!
Was he now? I had not heard that but I can see it
@@spectorcreative1872 Apocalypse was a last minute replacement in X-Factor. The Owl was supposed to be the Mastermind behind Frenzy, Tower and Timeshadow. Apocalypse was also supposed to be a single use villain, but his popularity brought him back. Go figure a MOTU knock off ended up getting an amazing history.
Marvels/Xmen "Apocalypse" was inspired by the entity named "Molasar" from the horror-movie "The Keep."

You really should put out a "Guide to Working in the Toy Industry" Book📚, where your knowledge is broken up into Chapters. I'm new to you channel "Begins kicking himself" and I'm playing catch up on your videos, you make it easy to find the topic your looking for but I know I've missed answers to my questions that you have already answered in a previous video, I just seen a video or comments referring to "Ideas" and why toy companies don't rush in to hear everyone's ideas do to the possibility of that idea already being in the works and accidentally being accused of stealing someone's idea when in fact that wasn't the case at all" I didn't think of that and I totally see why that rule is a rule and I like how companies have a certain section just for that situation where one can speak about a idea with a toy company without being worried about the subject biting them in the long run. I think I mentioned two ideas in a couple of our comments so sorry for doing that but you have my word those two ideas are anyone's now free and I will try not to blabber to much in that topic lol" but back to the subject, just like that topic, a Guide Book where someone like myself and others could use to research topics like that would be awesome especially in this field where there aren't many and Books will always be better then a search engine especially if the power goes out. I don't think you know how important your videos are to collectors and those who have ideas 24/7, your videos are beyond informative especially knowing that you worked and had a Direct influence on a successful Toyline as with HE-MAN, so please do us all a even BIGGER FAVOR and find a publisher and get to work on your book about the In and Out's of the toy industry, if it isn't on the best sellers list after the first week of release I will personally eat Ram Mans Hat.

This makes think of why the new Star Wars trilogy just didnt work for me. First they introduced Snoke and Kylo Ren, who just are not as intimidating as Darth Vader and Darth Sidious. And then they tried to reintroduce Sidious. They choose poorly. Yeah, they should have scalled the threat level up, like they did in the He-man universe. What is more frightening than Skeletor? Skeletors master: Hordak. So what the New Star Wars Trilogy should have done, was either introduce a bigger extradimensional threat, that threatens both the Empire and the New Republic. Or they should have introduced a more frightening Sith than the Emperor.... like THE Sith, the first Sith. Who is an eternal. That could have been better than what we got. But then again: it would still have failed with Rey, the most perfect, and thereby uninteresting hero ever put on the silverscreen.

The aforementioned comic book series also included something about the "Eyes of Grayskull" being two super weapons that can control time and space. I believe that was original content to that rendition only, but I thought a Castle Grayskull with insertable "Cosmic Eyes" would make a neat toy.
They also turned The Sorceress into just one avatar of The Goddess (Or whatever MOTU calls its creation myth), with Teela becoming a Snake Man style avatar of Serpos (An aspect of The Goddess), and Evil Lynn an avatar of Barbatos (Another aspect, that seeked universal destruction).
It was almost like the comic book writers were pushing fan ideas for toys. :)
what comics are shown in this video

I've thought of a good death battle idea She Ra vs Xena Warrior.
there is also cross over story ideas I feel have potential to be movies or shows on television in a series. Masters Of The Universe was good a sequel was mentioned however it never happened.
I believe the sequel that could have bern would have revealed Hordac and Skeletor how they knew each other.
also it would have shown the separation of Prince Adam and Princess Adora.
but Hordac and the origin of the Hord can be told in a new storyline.
because there are secrets which have not been looked at or talked about.
I have wanted to know Orcos life his past and who his people are.
