  • Welcome to Toysplosion - the show all about the hobby of toy collecting and getting nostalgic about toy history!
    According to the MPAA, the Restircted, or "R" rating means that the rated film includes adult material not suitable for viewers under the age of 17. Even though these movies aren't made for kids, that doesn't stop the toy companies from making toys! Let's check out a few of these toy lines today on Toysplosion!

    Thanks so much for the feedback, everyone! Just so you know, the plan is to revisit this topic in future episodes. There were so many toys that fit this category that I could talk about. So if there is a certain toyline you feel is missing *cough*RoboCop*cough*, fear not! I'll get to it in time! ;-) Thanks so much for watching!!!

    It was the existence of toylines for these movies that convinced my parents to let me watch them when I was a child. I'd tell my parents that the movie must be ok for kids or they wouldn't make toys for it.

    I remember there being all kinds of controversy about WWE wrestling figures in the late 90s because the product was adult-oriented but still “geared to kids.” Meanwhile, they sold South Park, Robocop, Police Academy, Mortal Kombat and Terminator figures which were apparently just fine.

    • @orinanime

    Despite the ridiculous levels of censorship in kids' programming in the 80s, the decade was truly a lawless wasteland when it came to transitioning hard-R movies into cartoons and toys. You'd think the 1979 brouhaha over the aborted Alien line would've signaled caution, but the 80s gave us toys and cartoons based on movies so violent, they had to be CUT to get an R in the first place. See RoboCop, and Toxic Avenger...a movie that features a close-up of a child's head being run over by a car. 😕

Don't get me wrong, my parents aren't irresponsible, I just had surprisingly mature movie preferences back then. I'm 24 now, and I just barely started collecting vintage r rated toys and various other stuff. Thinking now it was an Odd thing indeed. Though when the Alien and Predator lines hit was in my teens but did check them out and read a few of the comics and loved the Arcade games. Never got any but always dug the designs. Today thanks to NECA I do have a clan leader Predator and it's a fav fig of mine with the Retro box design showing off the old toy.
    Think only R rated movie toy I ever owned as a kid was Robocop with the blast cap rolls. Boy that would scare people today.
    Think the first Police Academy movie was R and as sequels hit the rating went to pg-13 and also the cartoon which I really can't remember sadly.
    Now we have toys on Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger, Leatherface, Chucky, Candyman, Zombies a plenty, and Evil Dead. Yes collector toys but then we have the Funko and plushies of these same characters.

    Something to remember about 'back in the day'.... While the shows were rated R at the theater and video, There WERE other versions too. Back then the network cable stations would show off an 'edited for Television' version. I couldn't see R rated movies, but with some fancy editing that cut out the swearing and sex.... I had vhs tapes of Lethal Weapon, Rambo 1 & 2, Robocop, Aliens, Terminator and a lot more.
    Therefore when "I" saw a Terminator figure or a Rambo figure... they weren't some unknown quantity. They were from movies I had seen and loved. Even if I didnt' realize how much swearing and violence and nudity the director's MEANT there to be in them... I had stlll seen the story and the characters.
    Honestly, I wish that was still a thing. I'd love to introduce my nephews to some shows that I loved... that frankly are NOT acceptable for little boys. Nowdays they just show them on the other 400 channels that can get away with more and really don't cut anything anymore. :(

      Not sure about Marv, but their was a frakus in 1999, when Trendmasters released action figures for Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me. One of the figures was of Austin in his underwear with a base that had a recording of his line, "Do I make you horny baby?" A mother that was shopping with her son saw this and complained so the figure was quickly pulled from retail at major stores.

      I think the aforementioned Sin City toy was made by Macfarlane Toys. It courted controversy because (a) toys for adults were a fairly new thing at the time and (b) remain an alien concept to the moral guardians.

    Great video! I think toy and movie execs realised that kids were getting to see most of these on home video. This is why Highlander, Rambo and Robocop generated toys and cartoons too. Plus the 1994 timing of Kenner’s ‘Predator’ series ties in with the syndication of the two Predator movies. And did anyone else but 11-14 year old kids get obsessed with all these VHS and Cinemax classics?

    Well, even though the movies were rated R, there was multiple comics, books, and other items that kids can read and watch of those characters. So, yes, there is a safe source for those toys. The Aliens and the Predator ones, for example, were more comic based than the movie.

    I remember having a Rambo action figure and I'm sure I had a kenner Robocop back in the 80's as well. On the surface it was such a bizarre marketing idea but it made me want those figures so much more because the movies were forbidden fruit. Great video

    You're probably unaware of toy lines based on previous tv shows from r-rated movies Planet Of The Apes and Logan's Run in the 70s, when I was a kid. Sears had foot-tall Apes figures, and Mego made the short Logan line. I have neither, but I distinctly remember Dr. Zaius in his beige outfit with tiny snap buttoned vinyl coat.

    I had some of the T2 toys despite not watching the film until later in my adult years. Although, I do wish I had those Police Academy toys. Those and the Beetlejuice toys looked like tremendous fun that I regret missing out on as a kid.

    One thing to consider is that all these movies eventually got edited TV versions. I wasn't allowed to see Predator unedited as a kid, but I taped and wore out the TV version and got at least one of those figures.

    I think its because kids liked the action part of the R movie.
    Some movies that are R rated IMO are okay... but still need adult supervision. example: t2 a okay! but I wouldn't let me kid see American psycho xD

    I never thought too deeply on this but you are so right on this like Aliens and Predator. I remember reading the Dark Horse comics on them and watching the movies but, I didn't think too deeply at that time on what should or should not be made into kids toys. I own all those Alien toys featured.

  • @RaymondCastile

    There was a big figural game for the movie Alligator. I don’t remember if Grizzly was rated R or PG, but there was a rubber figure and a Collegeville Halloween costume. The Incredible Melting Man was definitely R-rated, and Collegeville made a Halloween costume for that film, while Imagineering made a makeup kit aimed at kids. Mego was going to make a game based on The Car, but there is disagreement as to whether it was ever produced. They made a TV commercial for it. The very R-rated Mad Doctor of Blood Island had a rubber figure in 1969. I could probably think of others if I thought about it.

    The exploding T 1000 was cool for the first few days. Then it wore out, and you had to hold it together because it would just fall apart. The Mobile Assault Vehicle and Heavy Metal Cycle were pretty cool too.

    If you want to watch a pg-13 movie from the 90s watch cool world just saying it should have been rated R

    • @MarvelandDC379
      @MarvelandDC379 5 лет назад +7

      Back then PG-13 was a soft R. Nowadays PG-13 is a hard PG.

      I thought Cool World was a motion picture back in the 80's and was Rated-R.

    • @dreamlandnightmare
      @dreamlandnightmare 5 лет назад +4

      @MarvelandDC379
      Today's PG-13 is PG, "hard" or "soft". PG is G. R is still R.
      The whole concept of the PG-13 rating was to introduce a category to distinguish movies that featured material a bit too edgy for the standard PG-rating (usually violence) but not intense enough for an R (e.g., "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" and "Gremlins"). The rating was used appropriately for a while, but sometime in the 90's, it became clear the PG-13 rating was the most marketable; around this same time, PG movies increasingly became family-oriented. The association with being kid-friendly stuck to PG, and thusly the G rating was rendered all but extinct. So, what began as a nuanced rating to bridge a gap between PG and R has instead become a replacement for PG, shifting PG's function to G and essentially eliminating G (which is now only used for things aimed at very young children).

    • @brandonlyon730
      @brandonlyon730 2 месяца назад

      @@dreamlandnightmareThe G rating had a bit an interesting history as well when the MPAA rating system was first implemented. Stuff that was rated G back then would’ve definitely been rated PG or PG-13 today like the first Planet of the Apes movie had a G rating.
