Trapjaw, looks wise, seems a lot like a villain I created called Dr. Algernon Alchemy, in that he looks like he's been defeated and mutilated (by his own devices), burned, crushed, etc. except Dr. Alchemy kind of looks like a walking corpse and a bit like Emporer Snoke. Anyway, that's what he always reminded me of.
Well, Dr. Alchemy, I created him in 1972, and like all my characters, never went anywhere other than fanfiction and school papers, he's not very sympathetic, at least anymore. I started him as a brilliant professor, so smart that he once taught Reed Richards and Victor Von Doom. He was always obsessed with alchemy, his namesake, and delved into forbidden knowledge which of course drove him insane and caused the death of his wife. At some point he used his knowledge, creating a kind of Zombie like group of monsters, and took over a small town. This is where he came into contact with the second incarnation of my created heroes. Though he was eventually defeated, his actions would ultimately destroy the second group known as G.O.L.D. Over the years Dr. Alchemy became more evil, became a child Killer, brainwashed his own, now grown daughter who was a genius in her own right with mechanics and electronics. Somehow, he has attracted a group of other enemies of the now third incarnation of G.O.L.D. He basically looks like Snoke now, held together only by hate. There is some mystical stuff in there as to why he sacrifices kids to the Chaos Lords etc. Anyway, he's managed to kill, directly or indirectly, several of my heroes, including Bearclaw, the original leader, Vegas, Cowboy, and Ladyhawke, and secretly controlled Billy Ray for years sending him into hiding until recently. Action figure wise, as I have made customs and kitbashes of some of the characters I have imagined, it gave me a reason to buy both an Emperor Snoke and a Rose Tico!
@@edwardbeaty8899 That sounds cool and really in depth. You remind me of me. I had a whole universe of heroes and villains. I played role playing games with my friends and I basically made a world where key DC, Marvel, He-Man and other characters were part of the Teenage mutant ninja Turtles' multiverse. It lasted for about 3 or four years and it was awesome to see it grow and evolve. Now, 20+ years later, I'm recycling a lot of characters and updating them so I can publish my own comic truly independently. You could try doing that too. You can self publish books on Amazon. You can print your own comics. The sky is the limit now in the digital age. Follow your dreams. One day, you may be the one selling the toys.
I did make an attempt to do my own Comic in the late 1980s. I was manager and eventually owner of different Comic stores for 24 years. In the late 1980s there was a boom in Independent Black and White comics. It's been decades now so I guess it's okay to tell this. I was in talks with Solson Comics, known for a LOT of hack work and one shot comics but they had a couple of good books. Unfortunately they folded. Shortly after that I got married, started having kids, moved up to other Comic stores. During the years, nerve damage in my right hand that I sustained during my military service (1975 to 1984) took away my ability to draw. Now, I'm in my 60s, a widower, about to be a 3 time grandfather. So, I don't have the tools to do it anymore.
@@spectorcreative1872 My bad, I thought you said wasn’t since it followed your previous statement. It was hard for me to imagine as something to discover when the commercial and comics seemed to make it obvious.
In Germany we had a series of radio plays and in that Trap Jaw has another story, I'll translate it from a fansite with Google translator. The Bodyguard of Evil Trap Jaw has two different backstories. One is told in the mini comic "The Menace of Trap Jaw". Here Trap Jaw is a dangerous criminal on another world. By chance, Trap Jaw arrives in Eternia and is able to acquire the mysterious powers of Castle Grayskull. But He-Man and Skeletor can work together to prevent the worst, and Skeletor takes Trap Jaw with him. In the radio play "The Level of Eternity" the second background story is told in a strange way. Orko falls into a trance and learns the true story of Trap Jaw. Here, who was once on the side of the good, armorer Jaw freed a little boy. But when attempting to rescue him, he is caught by the skeleton tank and seriously injured. Skeletor takes Trap Jaw under his wing and replaces Trap Jaw's right arm and jaw, and has given him a hearing wash. His special abilities lie particularly in his right arm, which he can replace with various weapon prostheses. Trap Jaw has a particularly diverse arsenal of weapons, especially in the cartoon episodes. With his steel jaw he can crack all metals and "hard nuts". Trap Jaw is one of the most loyal followers of Skeletor and is loyal to his master. In addition, Trap Jaw is often at work as a technician for Skeletor.
i would be very happy about that. but it will be a very difficult task. if my english wasn't so bad i would offer myself for it. the german radio plays were "masterpieces" spoken by some of the best dubre speakers in germany and the radio plays are unmatched nowadays .... the radio plays were already for the adult level at that time and i still shudder when i listen to them. if you want to do it then look for a real He-man fan (not like Kevin Smith) who speaks German and English fluently and knows the radio plays. I would love it
I find TrapJaw/Kronus' story compelling. Its amazing how he started to think for himself, rebelled against his leader, he tried to bring him down, just to end up being chewed up and spitted out by him. And now, out of humiliation and insecurity, he has to follow him eternally, since his quasi alpha status has been eradicated altogether. This is what I call great story telling. Thank you for another amazing video.
@@spectorcreative1872 You guys should do a collaboration! Midnight's Edge are big fans of Conan the Barbarian and there was a little bit of confusion on the He-Man connection in one of their videos. Everyone who subscribes to you points it out. Also they might like an insider's perspective on MOTU: Revelation.
He is fascinating because he carries a lot of body-horror and gory elements with him. I will always remember his origin story in the german audio tapes where he was an ordinary farmer who was saving a child from skeletor, who had the child bound on railway tracks and came driving towards it on a train and mutilated the now known Trap Jaw and decided to create a new henchman from what was left of him!
Trap Jaw has always been my favorite MOTU character. Loved when they added the Kronos back story and how he didn’t like who Keldor became as Skeletor and tried to overthrow him only to fail. And that another one of my favorites, Tri-Klops assisted in repairing him as Trap Jaw. And the Iron Jaw idea is very cool. Since it is quite a few differences between us 2 versions as well as unique backstories
I love how you admit when you made different variations of characters for the sake of profit, but also just like to give lots of homages to the Masters of the Universe franchise. It's very fun to hear your stories from working with the brand 😁
First rule of business: stay in business. In this case, profits mean you get to keep making more and cooler toys. No profits mean you have to scrap a line and start staging another from scratch- which I’d imagine is harder and often less fun. ;-)
I remember when I was a kid, Trapjaw sold out around here and I freaked out! I know I was a collector at that point... like 3 or 4 years old. I was like, if I couldn't get Trapjaw, I can't let Triclops pass me without getting him! I mean... I remember having serious debates with my parents about this stuff... lol
Trap Jaw also had an alternative origin in the german audio cassettes from the 80s! He was a weaponsmith named Jaw (not very creative with the naming here). One day Skeletor drove with a tracked vehicle (Landshark?) trough his village and was about to run a child over that was standing in the middle of the road. The weaponsmith saved the child but lost his arm and jaw in the process. Skeletor took the remains and put cybernetic enhancments on him - including a microchip in his brain that makes him obedient to Skeletor! Very gruesome - but not as terrifying as Beast Mans origin story.
@@TitularHeroine Beast Man was the the smartest scientist of his race. When he uncovered an ancient stone tablet and realized it actually was an instruction for a machine to melt the pole caps, he altered the plans, rendering the machine useless. When Skeletor found out about the machine, he tortured Beast Man over a long period of time - without success. As a final step Skeletor messed with his brain - turning him into a loyal, but stupid subject without any memories. (The audio of the torture was really terrifying!) Webstor found out about this, and told Beast Man about it - tragically, he didn't understand it. Skeletor: "Beast Man, you are a fool! Which, however, I am not entirely innocent of." (Years later, Skeletor succeded in building the machine and that's what the episode was about!)
@@derheadbanger9039 Holy cow! That is intense! Those stories sound amazing (and poor guy!). And Skeletor sounds so much more evil and sinister in these.
@@TitularHeroine Yes, he is - and he even sounds threatening. The audio tapes were what I grew up with and where my nostalgia lies. Unfortunately the stories are riddled with plotholes and inconsistencies. But the voice acting, atmosphere and music is top notch most of the time. These are the voices I hear in my mind when reading the comics etc.
It was with Trap-Jaw that suddenly my mother thought MOTU was cool. Trap-Jaw was the first one she saw on a peg and picked up without us having to ask for it because she thought he looked cool. She actually bought two of them -- one for me and one for my brother which was rare. After that she was paying more attention to the new figures and picking up anything that she thought looked cool without us having to ask. All thanks to Trap-Jaw.
I still think it's so cringy that they made Zodac into Zodak ... Just create a new black character if you want to focus so much on skin color rather than a toy just being fun for kids. I hate when Hollywood or whoever takes an already established white character and makes them black, just to appease the PC crowd.
Jaw was a kind man who worked as am armourer. Once he saw a little boy chained on a street while a tank was approaching to run over the kid. Jaw managed to free the boy just in time but the tank hit him, tearing of his arm and crushing his jaw. The driver of the tank, Skeletor, decided to give Jaw a new jaw of steel and a weapons arm. He also reprogrammed Jaw's brain, making him his slave and bodyguard.
I always pretended that Trap Jaw and Tri-Klops were Eternia soldiers injured in battle that were rebuilt by Man-at-Arms and eager for revenge at what he did to them. That might have been a cool story. Thanks for the awesome video!
It doesn’t make sense for Trap Jaw and Iron Jaw to co-exist. Both have the same EXACT injuries?!?! I don’t think it works It’s definitely not like Zodak and Zodac who are part of the cosmic enforcers and “brothers” Also it really doesn’t make sense that Keldor/Skeletor is the one that injuries him.... cause why would he go and work for him???? It should be a goodie OR maybe Zodak. Always thought Trapjaw and Triclops would be friends as both are disabled and tech characters
You are swift to judge. Other stories in other genres get away with doing this sort of thing, example would be alternate timeline character travelling into his doppelganger's universe.
This is one instance where I really like the different looks being other characters. I couldn't fit the all green look into my head canon, but if he's a different character, it works great. Question: was his name going to be "Iron Jaw" in classics, as well?
I always found it interesting that James Bond's Jaws was filling a slot which had once been occupied by the guy who wanted to kill Jaws the shark, in the beloved romantic comedy, Must Love Jaws. Regarding trapjaw, I found it interesting that no Eternian scientist could ever give him a more dexterous hand to work with.
A MOTU Classics Trap Jaw would be awesome to get, they are so expensive to get now... Oh well, at least I got my Origins Trap Jaw for now and hope they make a Masterverse one of him.

This is rather lolzy- I was playing with Origins Kronis and was thinking I'd ping you for more info on just what his background is, at least in universe. 200x etc. shows him being a blue skinned warrior/soldier type before losing his arm and jaw and becoming the happy go luck cyborg we all know and love- is he a Gar in your head canon/semi-official canon?
@@coywarrior71 I keep hearing people on boards insist he's a Gar, because he has blue skin (racial profiling much?), but I haven't seen anything official stating that he's a Gar. Usually, he's from a different dimension entirely.
I never fully understood the play value of the loop on Trap Jaw's head. A hook, sure, but a loop? He zips down a line to join a battle (or to quickly escape), but wait, he needs to stop to unthread the line first... would have been easier to use his hook arm attachment instead.
In the German Radio play cassettes, skelletor ran him over and then tried to "repair" him again by implanting these cyber things into him. In the German radio play, for example, you were beast men by a biologist and Skelletor poisoned him, which made him stupid
I had a radio play on audio casette from Masters where in a vision of the past a man saves a boy from a tank. And Skeletor taunting the wounded telling him he will make him his servant and call him trapjaw. That was pretty grim but also a cool origin story.
With the rights reverting soon, are there any MOTU characters / character designs that Mattel owns and those Universal would have to get permission from Mattel to use?
I sort of get the feeling Mattel is doing everything in their power to demonstrate to Universal that Mattel should be running MOTU and letting them turn the brand into a license to print money for whoever owns it, while under the control of (or at least while getting heavy input from) the toy company who created the brand to begin with.
@@Canoby I agree with all you said and I recall Scott mentioning in another video that Mattel will get first rights to refuse. My question is based on ‘what will a MOTU under Universal look like’? Will there be characters they can’t use because of some legal issue with its creation/genesis/origin? Will there be no noticeable difference other than Universal can redesign the characters as it sees fit and a different artistic take because of that redesign and manufacturer’s style?

I completely forgot about that glow-in-the-dark ring with the secret compartment, I used to wear it to school along with my talking watch from RadioShack.
Tri-Klops was tasked by Keldor/Skeletor to fix-up Kronus. Now do Tri-Klops' origins. His ghastly, hard-wired, eye apparatus revealed in the 200X cartoon was a shocker! Thanks for your expertise & covering these topics 👍.
Fun Fact from Germany. In the 80s we had official radio plays on MC, don't know if they were 1:1 identical with other countries but there's another origin story of Trap Jaw. There he was once a weapon engineer seing a child traped in the way of a tank driven by Skeletor. Though he was able to save the child, he suffered sever wounds on shoulder/arm and head. As Skeletor stepped out seing the wounded man he said (more or less good translated): "This is the weapon engineer Jaw. He has been wounded. But that doesn't matter. I will fix that Jaw. I will give you a jaw made of steel and a new shoulder. From now on you will work for me. Because I will reprogram your mind. Your right arm will become your fighting arm, I will call you Trap Jaw. You will become my slave and bodyguard. Trap Jaw, the mightiest warrior of Skeletor."
The German MOTU Audio Dramas - from the 80ties - made up their own Origins: Trap Jaw was here the engineer Joe of the Royal Guard, who got horrifically injured by saving a child from Skeletor, who was joyriding a tank. Skeletor in his infinite compassion saw the chance to get a free crony (see Kronis) and rebuild him as a cyborg. The German Audio dramas were weird, yet entertaining.
If you were at Mattel long enough to release Iron Jaw, what differences would you have made other than establishing that him and Trapjaw are two different character? Would you have went with a more 200X look when it came to his head and cybernetics arms or would it look similar to what Super7 had released with a cartoony-looking head resembling MOTUC trapjaw, but with the elongated ear guards?
didn't know the motu story has different realities...kinda disappointing. in the original cassette tapes trap jaw was kinda good guy, saving a child from skeletor and nearly died losing arm and jaw. than being turned into evil (kinda like that)
The ring on the helm always confused me. So he can zip line with it. But now all that weight is supported by his head, and there’s no way to detach from the line without cutting or untying it. I guess he lost his jaw because of a failed zip line action, where he fell, and the helmet’s chin strap tore off his mandible when he fell.
The loop on top of Trap Jaw's helmet is a custom made and modified heavy duty swivel style bolt snap/dog leash clip. That's the only way he can zip line without any issues at all while using his mechanical arm to help guide him as he slides down or across it.
To tell you the truth even though visually impressive i don't like that much the back story with keldor before being skeletor etc as a premise. Those are stories that was released to fill in the gaps in a series of a toy line that afterwards became an animated series.I always wanted to imagine skeletor as an evil warlock & stuff having always this face of terror, and the other characters even though we didn't knew their origin to put our imagination run wild to make our own stories, instead having someone tell us one and that's that. This was the role of all those toy franchises all allong from the beginning,to make our imagination run wild that's why they serve us in each figure those small comic books without specific continuation,to make our own stories and play!
He-Man is definitely a universe that one should not wonder these questions, like origin stories, the “whys” and “motivations”, etc…. Just let the Art flow over you, don’t think too hard, else this universe of greyskull home, will fall apart. Lol
Well Tri-Klops is Skeletors tech/scientist guy, I wouldn't be surprised if they made it cannon that he fixed up trapjaw with similar tech as his helmet.
In the 80ies there was a german he man Radio play which tells a different Story about trap jaw. Im pretty sure this is not canon but in this Story trap jaw was a regular guy who was wandering in the forest. He heard a child crying for help. He found a little boy tied up and saw a tank driving in the boys direction. He saved the boy but got ran over by the tank getting horribly injured. The tank stopped. Skeletor who was driving the tank took the injured man and made him trap jaw. The disturbing thing about this Story isnt the fact that trap jaw was a nice guy before He was pancaked by a tank. The disturbing part is that skeletor kills innocent children with a tank in his free time

BTW, Snoke and Rose were in a 3 figure deal with Jaina Solo, the only one I originally wanted.

Yup!
@@spectorcreative1872
My bad, I thought you said wasn’t since it followed your previous statement.
Yes! Can confirm the good trap jaw gets crushed by a tank while saving a child story!
I really should do a video on all these differences
i would be very happy about that. but it will be a very difficult task. if my english wasn't so bad i would offer myself for it. the german radio plays were "masterpieces" spoken by some of the best dubre speakers in germany and the radio plays are unmatched nowadays .... the radio plays were already for the adult level at that time and i still shudder when i listen to them. if you want to do it then look for a real He-man fan (not like Kevin Smith) who speaks German and English fluently and knows the radio plays. I would love it
Just a question , with "radio play" do you mean the cassette series made by EUROPA ?
@@paluxyl.8682 yes exactly the google translator has "Hörspiele" translated with "radio plays"
Always wondered if The Bezerkers from ThunderCats were inspired by Trap Jaw?

I find TrapJaw/Kronus' story compelling. Its amazing how he started to think for himself, rebelled against his leader, he tried to bring him down, just to end up being chewed up and spitted out by him. And now, out of humiliation and insecurity, he has to follow him eternally, since his quasi alpha status has been eradicated altogether.
This is what I call great story telling. Thank you for another amazing video.
Well glad you enjoyed! Feel free to share, it helps the channel a ton
What timing! Just as I was binging your most excellent videos anyway!
Well thank you! And big fan of your channel as well BTW Midnight. I watch your videos all the time.

Yeah so much in a 5 inch toy!
how did he lose his arm??
Trap Jaw has always been my favorite MOTU character. Loved when they added the Kronos back story and how he didn’t like who Keldor became as Skeletor and tried to overthrow him only to fail. And that another one of my favorites, Tri-Klops assisted in repairing him as Trap Jaw. And the Iron Jaw idea is very cool. Since it is quite a few differences between us 2 versions as well as unique backstories
Yeah he just keeps getting cooler
I love how you admit when you made different variations of characters for the sake of profit, but also just like to give lots of homages to the Masters of the Universe franchise. It's very fun to hear your stories from working with the brand 😁
Well everything I did was to sell toys! It was my job. ;-P
@@spectorcreative1872 I know, I just appreciate the good balance between profits and creativity you have
First rule of business: stay in business. In this case, profits mean you get to keep making more and cooler toys. No profits mean you have to scrap a line and start staging another from scratch- which I’d imagine is harder and often less fun. ;-)
The MVC comic was much cooler then the later DC retcon. Loved those MVC comics.

I remember when I was a kid, Trapjaw sold out around here and I freaked out! I know I was a collector at that point... like 3 or 4 years old.
Good point!
Okay, almost afraid to ask -- what was that origin of Beast Man's?
@@TitularHeroine Beast Man was the the smartest scientist of his race. When he uncovered an ancient stone tablet and realized it actually was an instruction for a machine to melt the pole caps, he altered the plans, rendering the machine useless. When Skeletor found out about the machine, he tortured Beast Man over a long period of time - without success. As a final step Skeletor messed with his brain - turning him into a loyal, but stupid subject without any memories. (The audio of the torture was really terrifying!)
Webstor found out about this, and told Beast Man about it - tragically, he didn't understand it.
Skeletor: "Beast Man, you are a fool! Which, however, I am not entirely innocent of."
(Years later, Skeletor succeded in building the machine and that's what the episode was about!)
He does just look that cool
I still think it's so cringy that they made Zodac into Zodak ... Just create a new black character if you want to focus so much on skin color rather than a toy just being fun for kids. I hate when Hollywood or whoever takes an already established white character and makes them black, just to appease the PC crowd.
I feel this way too
Jaw was a kind man who worked as am armourer.
Yes the German audio drama had a cool backstory
I always pretended that Trap Jaw and Tri-Klops were Eternia soldiers injured in battle that were rebuilt by Man-at-Arms and eager for revenge at what he did to them. That might have been a cool story. Thanks for the awesome video!
Head cannon can be the best stories!
I prefer this to the one depicted in the video.
It doesn’t make sense for Trap Jaw and Iron Jaw to co-exist. Both have the same EXACT injuries?!?! I don’t think it works
It’s definitely not like Zodak and Zodac who are part of the cosmic enforcers and “brothers”
Also it really doesn’t make sense that Keldor/Skeletor is the one that injuries him.... cause why would he go and work for him???? It should be a goodie OR maybe Zodak.
Always thought Trapjaw and Triclops would be friends as both are disabled and tech characters
You are swift to judge. Other stories in other genres get away with doing this sort of thing, example would be alternate timeline character travelling into his doppelganger's universe.
Yes, no two people in the world have ever been hurt the same way.
This is one instance where I really like the different looks being other characters. I couldn't fit the all green look into my head canon, but if he's a different character, it works great. Question: was his name going to be "Iron Jaw" in classics, as well?
If we got to the mini comic version (which was released at power con by super 7) yes.
These Motu vids keep getn better and better!!

Back in the 80's my cousin and I made a Zipline for my Trap Jaw figure that was so long that the string wore through the loop on the figure's head.
I never fully understood the play value of the loop on Trap Jaw's head. A hook, sure, but a loop? He zips down a line to join a battle (or to quickly escape), but wait, he needs to stop to unthread the line first... would have been easier to use his hook arm attachment instead.
Well yeah. Zip lines are tight
In the German Radio play cassettes, skelletor ran him over and then tried to "repair" him again by implanting these cyber things into him. In the German radio play, for example, you were beast men by a biologist and Skelletor poisoned him, which made him stupid
Oh yes, a totally different continuity for sure

Glad you enjoyed! Any topic suggestions are also always welcome!
Oh yes, and thanks to the Masterverse this a legit different He-Man universe
The German MOTU Audio Dramas - from the 80ties - made up their own Origins:
Trap Jaw was here the engineer Joe of the Royal Guard, who got horrifically injured by saving a child from Skeletor, who was joyriding a tank. Skeletor in his infinite compassion saw the chance to get a free crony (see Kronis) and rebuild him as a cyborg. The German Audio dramas were weird, yet entertaining.
Oh yes that is a whole other canon!
The MOTU origins is one of my absolute favorites of all time!
Same for me!
I still haven't found one!
@@spectorcreative1872 I meant Classics 😇
If you were at Mattel long enough to release Iron Jaw, what differences would you have made other than establishing that him and Trapjaw are two different character? Would you have went with a more 200X look when it came to his head and cybernetics arms or would it look similar to what Super7 had released with a cartoony-looking head resembling MOTUC trapjaw, but with the elongated ear guards?
Would have made him as close to the mini comic appearance as possible, which I think super 7 did
didn't know the motu story has different realities...kinda disappointing. in the original cassette tapes trap jaw was kinda good guy, saving a child from skeletor and nearly died losing arm and jaw. than being turned into evil (kinda like that)
Only in the German audio tapes!
@@spectorcreative1872 ah okay, good to know. so you are from germany i guess
Because its a toy
Ha!
Well I blame society.

That be Tri-klops fix him up.
Well Tri-Klops is Skeletors tech/scientist guy, I wouldn't be surprised if they made it cannon that he fixed up trapjaw with similar tech as his helmet.
That is how 200X went
The disturbing part is that skeletor kills innocent children with a tank in his free time
Oh yes, a very different continuity all together
in the bio of trap jaw(around 5:50) it says tri klops fixed trapjaw. but, we all have seen how things get retconned(cough cough star wars)
