  • Whoever corrects a scoffer gets himself abuse, and he who reproves a wicked man incurs injury. Do not reprove a scoffer, or he will hate you; reprove a wise man, and he will love you. Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning.- Proverbs 9:7-9
Solomon infers that there are two types of men. Type one is the man who can't be corrected. Type two is the man who can be corrected. Type one despises you and sees you are the enemy. Type two loves you and perceives you to be a friend. And thus, each man has two different responses. One increases in wisdom, and the other injures and is abusive.
Of course, I think we would all love to be known as the type of men who can receive correction. But none of us always receive it perfectly. Maybe this is because:
We don't always agree with the correction being delivered.
We don't always like how the correction was delivered.
We don't always like the person delivering the correction.
These are three big reasons why we don't. And as soon as we focus on these three things, we get caught in the conundrum of the type one man. We move our focus from what needs to change in us to what needs to change in others. And if we feel cornered in this conundrum, we will fight our way out until we have injured them in the way we feel injured by them.
But the type two man, the man who can be corrected, he handles these moments differently. He pauses in correction to look first at himself. He searches for the truth in what others say and finds ways to adapt, change, and grow. And rather than be on the offensive with others, he is on offense with the sin that lies within his own heart. And the men who learn to do this become very wise and accelerate their learning in this life. So fellas, be that type of man.
ASK THIS: With whom do you need to get better at receiving correction?
DO THIS: Next time, receive their correction, say "thank you," and then change.
PRAY THIS: God, give me direction and correction. Give me a second chance.
