Your victory is found in the morning swims, endless miles on the bike, and all the long runs you start when you're already tired from the last workout. Champions are made in practice; they're just recognized on the course. Keep moving forward. You WILL be an Ironman!!
I grew up on the Big Island of Hawaii for 13 years, it was amazing to see these guys and girls run across the finish line. I remember one year we were at the finish line and both finishers lost there legs (they gave out on them), and both of them were crawling to the finish line, fighting for the spot. It was very, very awesome to see the determination in these athletes. Just amazing. I couldn't even finish the swim, let alone run and bike another 240+ miles.
never done an ironman but it is my ultimate goal to finish it. i have volunteered at a water stop for the disney ironman and i am always amazed at the persistance of the runners
It's not all about your physical appearance. It's about the mind. It all happens in the mind. Determination, motivation, perseverance. There are so many things that determine if you make it or not and they're played inside your head. Everyone can go so much further than they think. You'd be amazed what the human body can do.
these people are gods of fitness i am doing my third liverpool olympic distance triathlo in june! one day i hope to be fit enough to do ironman!!!!! live strong.........
Depends on a lot of things. I know a guy who used to be a body builder (not exactly 220 pounds maybe, but he also had some muscle weight), started training for triathlon in fall 2006, and last year did an IM with a time of 11:38, which is awesome. For you it might take long, but if you stop body building and start running you will for sure lose weight and get faster. Good luck!
HOLLY SHIT!!!! i had no idea that it was that hardcore. I thought it was like 15 miles bike nore 112. WoW thats crazy. Im only in highschool, on the xc team. I love it a lot and i have gotten addicted to going out and above what is needed. Im considering doing a half marathon, but i give these people a lot of credit. WOW, crazy stuff,
i agree that eminem trak was made for ironman, but the iron man footage goes from florida iron man to hawai, where you can see stadler on his kuota and al-sultan in the chasing bike back. Still a great inspiration to any one brave enough for ironman
A Battle, A determination, A drug to be achieved and to prove the world what you have and they don't. I SAlute all the people who participate in IRONMAN
I did the La marathon in 2009 in 5 hours and that was brutal for me im 16, and plannig to do the Iron Man when im older, and fly to hawaii, and learn how to swim :p I really respect this competion, and people who finish this *CLAPS* When I do it I plan to just finish.
If I was awesome I would be swimming the channel and doing the Ironman. My whole original point was that 2.4 miles isn't an insane distance to swim and can be done by pretty much anyone with some training. What makes it difficult is that you're racing against some of the best in the world and you still have to cycle and run afterwards, again, against some of the best in the world.
Think it's almost been a year since I posted that question but @ 163 pounds 7% body fat since I used to bodybuild @ 220 pounds think bodybuilding has given me a big edge in triathlon since I still kept a good size muscle/strengh ratio, hehe on my way to a sprint triathlon.
@waltkrieg well your obviously not gonna stop during a swim to grab a bite to eat or drink. in a marathon food and water is provided throughout the course. water at every mile and snacks such as pretzels, nuts, bananas ect.. but i dont know how that works in iornmans. but im sure thats why its an ironman because you have to push through the cramps, fatigue, and self doubt and when you're all done its absolutely worth it.
@waltkrieg oh and also the temp of the water depends on the location of the ironman, some are in hawaii where the water is warm and others further north or south where the water is pretty cold. it really depends on the location because california is pretty hot but the beaches are always cold because of the alaskan current but im not sure Cali hosts an ironman.
oh common, when I was like 13 years old we used to swim a mile. You could do it reasonably easily if you pace yourself and train for it... That's when we were young teenagers. If you're a professional athlete a couple of miles is not much.
@MrBozo88 Fair play to you! I'm an ex-International decathlete (and now personal trainer) and you sound very committed and will do very well I'm sure. I once did two decathlons in 5 days and that was tough, but I have always loved the mystique surrounding the Ironman. I can't wait to tell everyone I've done it!
@sedberg1 You are incorrect. Every individual in this triathlon has ironman will, and ironman strength, but few, if any, have the ironman heart displayed by Dick Hoyt. This is a man who carries not only the burden of his own body, but that of his son, for nothing more than to let him experience a sort of pride and accomplishment his body could never achieve on its own. Dick chose the road never travelled, carrying his son on his shoulders with a proud father's smile on his face. God bless
IRONMAN... not "plasticman" or "textile-man" IRONMAN! it's hard by design, if it was easy then everybody would do it. Do you "race" it? or do you just try to survive it? An amazing feat... even people who try to do it should be respected!
@gsf04 well ive never done an iron man but i have ran a marathon and believe me when i say that it is 80% mental and 20% physical....you will doubt yourself of finishing n your in at about mile twenty but digging deep inside and finding some sort of motivation is the best way to finish. (my dad told me i wasnt going to finish, my goal was to prove him wrong) so i did it without stopping. now the iron man is my next goal
@sedberg1 i have been training for an iron man for the past 3 years, working my way up from sprints to olympic to half irons. I have a very real base of experience in what it takes to register for one of these events. Don't read too into my words and look for opportunities to attack - and be reasonable. I said "few if any have the ironman heart DISPLAYED BY Dick Hoyt". Sure triathletes have heart, myself included - but how many of us have risen up to the test the way Dick has? very few.
@Technopunkster the training may be a peice of cake but to wake up everyday with the same determination as you had yesturday thtats the hard part and you have to do it even if its raining or snowing training for these events calls for consistancy
@beavervalley1 damn right. I've been going for almost a year to prepare for this event and your motivation starts to wane from time to time but there is always a reason to keep going forward.
The true Ironman is Dick Hoyt who does the race with his physically disabled son. Dick pulls him, rides with him and pushes him throughout the entire race. And he is 66 years old. Check out Team Hoyt on youtube.
Ya, the youngest to do ironman was 13 but it wasnt an IRONMAN series race, just ironman distance but its not good for your body to do races that far at this age.
I got a question I have been bodybuilding since I was 15 now 24yo 5,9 with 220pounds at 11%body fat but I have been curious about this sport it looks awsome and I think this is a whole different world of pain, the thing is how would my muscle mass impact me in this sport? my cardio consist of one mile run at 6 minutes pace and that's it lol, and that's every other 3rd day.
Ok so lets say I focus all my training into endurance training from now on? how long could it take to be at a fitness level to be able to try a triathlon lets say a 70.3 even just to finish in time. and I know Im going to loose muscle big time but always wanted to do a triathlon it's like a dream so far. Have some experience in swimming from High School team, and some road biking from when I was a young teen.
@INGRox u r so damn right. this guys really rock, this is the tuffest sport event the world has ever seen and you have to be really motivated and powerfull to complete in IM
Another 18 yo doing, this stuff! wahey! Have you done many marathons? i am just 18 myself and thinking i might aim for 2010 hawaii....have done a marathon but the other distances are quite daunting.
20+ hours shouldn be too tough for me, from summer after the exams, aiming for a sub 3 hour marathon in october (Dublin) if i can do that ill be starting to put time into the swimming part (my weakness)what are the qualifying times for kona?
Gahh at 203 pounds still looks like ways to go hehe, cardio is going up like a rocket I can say that, I can hold 3 miles at 7 min mile pace hehe =). starting to look at tri bikes Woo hoo!
@shinhigh Good for you! Your Dad sounds like mine and I've worked hard to prove him wrong many times (and always succeeded). It's sometimes the best motivation there is! Book your Ironman and go for it....
lol I'm lossing muscle like crazy down to 208 and I think Im getting chinsplints, hey but I can keep biking and swimming hehe, to heavy to run atm. will keep posting lets see what happends.
@shinhigh But if your body is not fit enough you can not finish. Also, I am a long distance runner and I can tell you that I would never participate to an Ironman, because I am not a good swimmer. Finally, Im wandering how is it to swim... Is it cold ? Warm ? and what is happening when a swimmer has cramps ? or when the athlete is hungry or thirsty ?
@ percdann An athlete from my Triathlon Club started at Kona and had a qualifing time about 9:50, an other one, who is in age group 30-34 had a 9:16 and didn't make the qualification
Your victory is found in the morning swims, endless miles on the bike, and all the long runs you start when you're already tired from the last workout. Champions are made in practice; they're just recognized on the course. Keep moving forward. You WILL be an Ironman!!
So much respect for these guys. Gets me pumped for my daily running. One day, I will complete an Ironman. :)
I just want to say that the days leading up to Ironman Wisconsin this past year, this was my go-to motivation. Thanks!
I grew up on the Big Island of Hawaii for 13 years, it was amazing to see these guys and girls run across the finish line. one day i hope to be fit enough to do ironman!!!!! live strong.........
Awesome! I've got my first Ironman in Sep 2011 in Wales...can't wait!
Good luck!
it only takes one triathlon to know the feeling at 4:37 and its something you'll never forget
This is psyching me up for the San Francisco Triathlon tomorrow... HTFU!
I wonder if Eminen ever imagned that so many people would use this song for their Ironman motivation - it got me through my first
HOLLY SHIT!!!!
i had no idea that it was that hardcore.
I thought it was like 15 miles bike nore 112.
WoW
thats crazy.
Im only in highschool, on the xc team. I love it a lot and i have gotten addicted to going out and above what is needed.
Im considering doing a half marathon, but i give these people a lot of credit.
WOW, crazy stuff,
anyone with any kind of fitness can train 6 months and do IRONMAN. piece of cake baby !
i agree that eminem trak was made for ironman, but the iron man footage goes from florida iron man to hawai, where you can see stadler on his kuota and al-sultan in the chasing bike back.
Still a great inspiration to any one brave enough for ironman
with you on that one, im doin the first ironman i can after i turn 18, im 14 now, last year i was top 5 in country

Love the Silverchair in the beginning. haha
Ironman's life = simple life
Swim, bike, run, eat, sleep, and repeats :)

Chrissy Wellington performance at Hawaii was incredible!
these Ironman are the elite SAS of human athletes
Still training for my first 70.3...can't imagin doing a full one!
I wish you fluent race and good luck !
There is a 17 hour cut off time. Each portion of the race has thier own cutoff time but at max you have 17 hours.
Think it's almost been a year since I posted that question but @ 163 pounds 7% body fat since I used to bodybuild @ 220 pounds think bodybuilding has given me a big edge in triathlon since I still kept a good size muscle/strengh ratio, hehe on my way to a sprint triathlon.
awesome ORF1 *thumps up*
Speechless

Best video ever
haha nice silverchair song! i never hear it anymore...
the pinacle of human fitness. i wish one day i will have the balls to do this..
3.9km is still 156 lengths of a 25m pool...a fare old distance + its open water with currents etc.
oh common, when I was like 13 years old we used to swim a mile. You could do it reasonably easily if you pace yourself and train for it... That's when we were young teenagers. If you're a professional athlete a couple of miles is not much.
can't wait for the day when i finally get to compete in one myself...
@MrBozo88 Fair play to you! I'm an ex-International decathlete (and now personal trainer) and you sound very committed and will do very well I'm sure. Great, man :) u're right.
@minidude0 I am agree with you about the mental toughness.. I am sure than even the best of the bests is never 100% sure to finish.
@gsf04 well ive never done an iron man but i have ran a marathon and believe me when i say that it is 80% mental and 20% physical....you will doubt yourself of finishing n your in at about mile twenty but digging deep inside and finding some sort of motivation is the best way to finish. Fantástico - Alex Brasil
2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride and 26 mile run (marathon), i think?
Good, Start with some sprint triathlons then work your way up year by year.
Et hop dans la playlist.
Ahhh...but not all Ironmans are the same. Each course is different. There is always a challenge there, anywhere you go.
COMAAAAAAAAAAAN! respect :D

There are people that swim the fking English channel! That's a fair old distance!

cookies....doing an lronman...i would burn off about 3 dozen....so there iam stocking up on cookies...question how many can you eat ?
I think it's too early to try it with 18. I Germany people have to be 21 to be allowed to start and even that is really early.
But if you follow the movie, there's a tin can :P
Holy shit, i can barely jog 1.5 miles.
What if you were on the beach one day, and all these people were swimming your way? wtf? haha
holy crap i would die
@ percdann An athlete from my Triathlon Club started at Kona and had a qualifing time about 9:50, an other one, who is in age group 30-34 had a 9:16 and didn't make the qualification
awesome ... just a suggestion - cut out the first 1m05s and just start with Eminem
