  • Hello folks, this is my vocal analysis of Matt Bellamy from Muse.
    Matts distinctive style and use of dynamics in his performance gives him an instantly recognisable voice on record. So, i thought it would be worth delving into to see how he gets that particular vocal sound!
    p.s apologies for some audio glitches in this video. there are few pops in the sound levels as my voice got a bit loud as i was singing...DOH!!
    Disclaimer: The aim of these videos is to show you how I try to mimic the tone and style of various singers. Singing in a style that isn't natural to your voice and using certain compressions styles can damage the voice if used long term. I use these sounds and techniques for certain studio performances and for clients who wish to have a certain style and sound on their recordings. The same as voice actors may push their voices in a studio session, I may use these styles in the same manner. If any singing style or technique you try hurts, I do not recommend using it long term.

    You did a great analysis!
    Matt Bellamy's voice and singing style is very difficult to imitate.
    He's using his diaphragm and maschera technique mixed with chest voice. This is why he has so much power in his voice. He has an awesome wide range of voice, being a clear lyric tenor. High notes, sometimes, aren't falsetto. They are a combination of his head voice with a very piano voice.
    He's unique!

    Kind of a push pull pattern of inspiration/exhalation cycles prior to each vocalization attack using a sort of return to his chest register as a base line enabling him to regulate amount of force and breath reserve to moderate levels & precisely slide into throat, falcetto, oral, and nasal modes (which each require varying amounts of breath support) and he in a sense equalizes effort and amount of air.
    Amazing vocal control

    I think it's a really good analysis. Maybe you shouldn't try to re-sing every line. Seems like we often left the analysis for you to do your best matt bellamy impression (which is pretty good btw). Maybe just do an analysis first and then a cover second?

    • @Vonbeardingham
      @Vonbeardingham  4 года назад +3

      Eduardo Guimaray thanks for your comment. My idea behind these is to try and show how to try and mimic the singers style, tone and delivery. Generally there is so much going on in each line alone if i was to try and do it all as a cover at the end there would be bits i would miss out 😞. I try to do line by line as it means i can give more attention to detail

    I think you should analysis in live performance.

    • @Vonbeardingham
      @Vonbeardingham  3 года назад +4

      For me, depends on the performer. Ive mentioned this in various videos before that one of the main reasons i use studio performances is that in the studio the artist gets multiple chances to get the take and sound THEY want. Live its a one shot wonder and a lot of singers tend to sing a bit different live. In the studio they have a better environment, can hear themselves better and can really lay down the sound they are happy with including a lot of the vocal nuances that really make a performance.
      Thats my reasoning 👍🏼

      Jessica hi jessica, and thanks for the subscription!
      I generally try and steer clear of being a reaction videoer. My aim is to try and replicate their voice and vocal nuances..so generally i’d have to see whether i could even sing her stuff lol.
      As i said in the video, if someone sings better live and i can find a live recording that shows all their characteristics in their voice then i’d definitely use it 😃

    • @Vonbeardingham
      @Vonbeardingham  3 года назад

      Its chest voice all the way in the chorus. Head voice is in the “you will be” of the verses and then i think in the oohs he does it like:
      OOH OOH ooh yeah yeah yeah YEAH YEAH
      Capitals being chest, lower case head

      @@Vonbeardingham thanks a lot for your answer ;) I've always wondered about this when it comes to mathew singing, because in live he seems to use more of head mix to hit those high open vowels, for example on a song like starlight. Whether in studio his high notes seems more chesty. Do you agree with me ?

    • @Vonbeardingham
      @Vonbeardingham  3 года назад

      I havent heard much of the live stuff, what it might be is a bit of voice preservation. Live in the studio you can give it your all, out on tour doing shows night after night you might have to go a bit easier on those top notes in the chest voice. He might use a bit of a blend or switch into head voice lower in his range to make sure nothing squeaks

  • @evilcowboy
    @evilcowboy 3 года назад

    Dude I am with ya, studio versions are the best versions to display the creativity of the artist, you tend to do way better when you know you can just cut the take over and over. So as you said no real pressure to get it absolutely perfect on the first take. This is also when happy accidents happen where the vocals my have an unintended part but just sounded good for the song. Good proof of this is well George Martin existed, he was primarily a studio guy and the work he did with the Beatles speak for itself. I don't think I have ever seen an image of George Martin when he wasn't behind a mixing board.
    So personally that tells me George Martin knew where to apply himself to be successful.......he was right.
    As you said only a clean live performance can really be used, it really sucks trying to analyze a vocal with a crowd cheering and screaming. Also the studio version is the only version that stands with a possibility of isolating vocals as they are usually mixed in a way you can do that with a lot of songs. Its how we all have isolated vocals of Layne Staley singing Man in the Box. You can really hear what a person is doing when you can isolate their vocals.
    Also this is a great artist to analyze, he has an impressive vocal range and is very impressive in the vocal techniques he uses. His compression on a lot of his vocals are pushed to the point before break up and distortion happens, that level of control is actually retarded.
