I dont have the fancy press... i'm gonna use a bench, a steel tube... and a ratchet strap!! My buddy is gonna lose his mind when we tear this thing down. Great video! Loads of insight. Thanks a million!
wish you were close to me i would gladly buy a core and have you rebuild it.You are very thorough on your breakdown and know the trans.I like my 700r been plowing with it for 9 seasons and the OD helps when i have to hit the highway to get to other locations.
After this look into the teardown steps I have decided not to purchase a rebuild kit. I am going to buy a professional rebuilt trans for my 86 GMC suburban. looks like an exploded wrist watch. Thanks for the insight.
Great video! Although I'm not going to rebuild a transmission I do like the video's to find out about transmissions and what makes them work. :-) Thanks for the video.
STOKED! Someone gave me a 89-90 chevy pickup, runs killer. Tranny case and all the parts are in boxes just gotta put it back together. This will help big time! I do motorcycles for a living & this looks really cool! Cant wait.
Just wish I had videos like this when I started out. Those shop manuals are too boring. Thanks for posting. I think I'll post some tear down builds done in the man cave at home some day. I sub'd.
Now I know why I dont have reverse in my truck. Thanks for sharing. How much done it cost to put all new gears in a 700 r 4 transmission the truck is 4x4
Thank you for the video. I'm afraid I may be doing this in the next week or so. I changed out my filter and pan gasket and after test driving it my reverse is gone. May be my fault, but I'm not sure. (For future videos turn off the AGC on your camera's audio. That's causing the volume to surge.)
Update: I rebuilt my transmission after watching this and a few other videos October '17 . It all worked out great. Upgraded to bonded steel piston, corvette servo, beefier band and 3-4 clutch pack. Wired up an override switch on the dash for the TCC solenoid. Everything is working great.
5:00 Wow! I didn't know my transmission had a pinball maze in it? Use to love those as a kid. Then I got a sega genesis. Does my transmission have one of those too?
Great video quality, but the sound could have been better as a lot of the time I couldn't hear you clearly, specially since I have no Idea what you're doing and I'd like to learn as I am planning on doing all this.
So some major confusion here, didn't GM declare all 700-R4's as 4L60's (sans the E denomination) after 1990? 4L60 and 4L60E's are different for obvious reasons, but aren't all newer 700-R4's known internally as 4L60?
@@redrhino1911 That's what I figured, hence why I wanted some clarification. Some of the parts are interchangeable, but the bushings, bearings, washers, and races changed over the years.
Andrew Christian I replaced the tranny fluid and that helped a lot, I got my gears back but it wouldn't shift after 2nd when in drive or OD. We also found a lot of small metal in the pan so were thinking it's the clutches for sure. I just replaced he tranny last week because I didn't want to deal with the rebuild. Hope that helps!

John K just curious how’d it turn out?

terry neumaster "exploded wrist watch" lmfao 😂😂😂
Make sure it's a 30 spline and not a 27 spline input shaft, the earlier 700-r4's were very weak and prone to leakage and failure.
I agree! My eyes just glazed over once he pulled the bottom of it off.

Fuckin spaceship. About to rebuild my first transmission at 50 years old. A 1993 4l60e
Excellent quick and dirty overview of this transmission. I just got a Vette with one and am trying to learn about it.

What wirdsdoi hook up to pura4ll60e in where a 700r4 was
I got a 4L 60e
I'm putting it in place of where 700 r4 was how do you wire it up
Good video. Clean, concise (not to long) and to the point. Mild background noise, not overpowering. Thank you.
Upon closer review there's no way in hell I could do this....and it work afterward! Thanks for the reality check.
I hate automatic transmissions

I love anything that is easy enough to fix using a youtube video.
im having the same symptoms in my 83 firebird. i swapped a 5.3 LS engine mated to a 700r4 and i recently lost 3rd and 4th gear
When I was a dealer tech as soon as I found a failed hard part was told to box it. All the rebuilt stuff came from Mexico.
Awesome vid! Thanks for all the information.
8:25 Oooo so many shiny bracelets for my wife.
I want to know how do you removed the torque converter please thank you very match best Reguardes
Great video
he certainly tore that down!
why is it so hard to fine a flexplate dust cover for a 700r4 transmissions
great video thank you!
I got one from Jegs it had to be altered, one for speedway would not bolt upon the transmissions
Fuck that, I'd definitely mix all this stuff up, I'll shell out the $$ to have a pro do it lol.
thank you for the video

If you have a 700r4 and my understanding the 4l60 and the 4l80 are the same so if you have one of those then yes it has it too.
Great video quality, but the sound could have been better as a lot of the time I couldn't hear you clearly, specially since I have no Idea what you're doing and I'd like to learn as I am planning on doing all this.
I took my transmission pan down from my $700r4 transmission and there was a 14 mm bolt laying in it
Has any incountered this problem in a 700R4 transmission in a 2 wheel drive 1991 GMC C1500
No idea where it came from
HELP !!!!
so a retaining ring failed and damaged the input drum? 7:27
My input shaft is still stuck after I removed the drum is there something I'm missing?

Midnight Mechanic I believe so

On the 4l60e, do I need to pull the speed sensor out before I remove the tail shaft housing?
Where is the overrun clutch?
The band is 2/4 band.
my clutches and snap rings weren't in the drum at 9:25. What the fuck
How did you get the bitch of a snap ring out? Snap ring pliers??
Would this be the same for an 84 camaro v6 with a 700r4?
victormendoza871 yea
Okay my 86 Chevrolet K5 blazer has a 700R4 in it and goes reverse.....but no forward
you still got that problem? I got a 87 k5 that has no OD or D but I fixed it
Labeouf how did u fix it mine has same prob

And I forgot to add, I replaced the filter for about 15$ but I'd say replace fluid and filter and go from there
Like working on a hemorrhaging patient.
why not go a little slower and talk more about what you are doing
