    Just found your channel and subscribed. Just bought a iMac 24 M3 and still have my iMac 27 Retina (Later 2015). Considering the Luna Display so as to use the iMac 27 as a secondary display. As for ethernet connection, is it correct to assume a 1Gbps ethernet is sufficient? Also, I assume I can connect a Gbps ethernet cable to the router and then connect each computer to separate switch ports on the switch, correct?

    • @HelpfulPhil
      @HelpfulPhil  5 месяцев назад +1

      Yes. I suggest you connect each iMac via Ethernet to your router. 1 Gbps is as good as it gets. Some people use WiFi which is much slower than that.

    Thanks for this Phil. Im waiting for the Luna display coming from the states and have read and watched all your info Only one question I have a new Mac studio and an older 2015 21inch iMac that I'll use as the secondary screen to my Benq attached to the studio. My router is down stairs and will not be able to connect direct with ethernet cables as its too far away and not practical. Is there any advantage to connect an ethernet cable between the two Macs ? Will it help towards a more stable connection through the router wirelessly? I thought of thunderbolt cables but Id need one that serves thunderbolt 2 to 3. Astropad does say about ethernet connections between Mac to Mac but not sure if I'm reading it correctly many thanks Jim

      Ethernet between Mac’s is actually not as easy as it sounds. Try using the new Peer-to-peer connection (wifi) option as it’s likely to be better than your wifi if the router is not close.

      The easiest way is to connect Ethernet cables from both Mac and PC to your Router. If you have a MacBook without an Ethernet port you would need to obtain a converter. Have you tried Peer-to-peer (wireless) connection?

      You have several options available of linking the 2 Mac's. I use Ethernet cables in both, directly to my router/modem. You can use WiFi as long as they are on the same network. Peer-to-peer (WiFi ) connection is another option which is managed automatically by the Luna software, and finally your USB cable - read this article for help

      Hi Phil. Can you connect two Macs directly by ethernet without a router or switch between them? I have a 2010 27" iMac and a 2023 MacBook Pro... Hoping to connect to Ethernet via one of the Thunderbolt ports on the MBP (with an adapter) and plug straight into the iMac... hopefully I can also access the iMacs hard drive via filesharing too, which will be a bonus!

    Hi there, I am trying to use this Luna with a MacBook Pro m3 as primary and an iMac as the main screen. I just want one screen the iMac. Additionally I want to be able to use the hard disk of the iMac as an external hard drive and the color correction of the iMac as the main ICC. Is it possible?
    Thank you Massimo

    • @HelpfulPhil
      @HelpfulPhil  4 месяца назад

      Yes. All of that is possible. In Luna Display terms you have a Primary and a Secondary screen, so either of your screens can be the Primary, for you just close the MBP (Clamshell mode) leaving the iMac screen as the only screen, therefore the Primary. Check out my other Luna Display videos for more answers.

    Hi Phil
    I am getting a mac mini in the new year and want to use my 2017 5k Retina 27" intel screen as my primary ( and only ) monitor by using Luna Display dongle. It's cheaper than buying the Studio display which is 2500 Aussie dollars. ouch !!
    Can I use a Samsung smart TV as a monitor just for setting up the LUNA app on the mac mini using HDMI from the mac mini into the HDMI on the TV and then set up my Retina 27" as my stand alone monitor? I don't have another Mac product to use in the set up.

    • @HelpfulPhil

      I don't think so. If it was able you would need more than one Luna Display device and I don't know how the Mac would differentiate between each one. Also remember that you need to connect the USB-C version to a port which supports display protocol which I think are limited on the iMac. Please check with Luna Display via the link in my description!

    Hi Phil.
    I have a 2017 27 in iMac with keyboard and mouse that was included when I bought it. I want to upgrade to the macmini2. … And use Mac to Mac for using the old iMac screen in the “headless” mode. I currently connect my iMac with the internet using an Ethernet cable. So it is used. My router is on the opposite side of the house. I do not use the Wi-Fi.
    1. Do I need to buy a new keyboard and mouse to setup the macmini2 for the Luna display. ? (I plan on using the hdmi port to TV to initially set up with the 2nd screen.) Or do I just need a new mouse? I assume I can use the lightening cable direct for keyboard with the Mac mini for setup only.
    2. I would like to try peer to peer. At least initially. Otherwise I would need to buy a thunderbolt cable.
    3. Do I have access to the hard drive of the old iMac when using the Mac mini in the headless mode?
    4. I use Bose speakers that are connected by USB to my old iMac. Can I continue up to use them there or do I need to set it up(plug it in) on the Mac mini?
    5. Can I use the SD memory card insert/port on the old iMac? There is none on the Mac mini.
    Thanks for your thorough explanations. Well done.
