About 6 years ago, (2015 I think) wife and I were visiting the falls, the flow was not a great as it was in this video, but we saw a kayak go over the falls. We thought we were witnessing a mistake/tragic accident. We watched the kayak paddle out of the pool and to shore. About 5 minutes later, a second one goes over the falls. Same result. Another 5 minutes go by and a third repeats the event. After the second one, we realized it was planned. People say I took crazy risks in my younger days. I've never touched a kayak but I just want to understand the technique of this, even going over smaller big falls, how does it work? It just seems like they would hit the water so hard , how do you not get injured/killed going over a damn waterfall in a kayak hah
extreme paddlers like these guys receive injuries very often! broken noses, shoulders, etc... when you run a high waterfall, the most important thing is to get your boat vertical to the surface before hitting the water. otherwise you could easily broke your back or something else.........
George R.R Martin HAT Majority of kayakers survey the waterfalls they intend to leap off of beforehand. If you notice in the beginning of the video, the phone call he made to his buddy states that they have been watching the activity of the waterfall for the right time to do so. I'm sure they're well aware of the depth of the pool they will land in. Yes, the idea is to be vertical and before impact cross your arms and push your head against them into the hull of the kayak. This closes the gap in which the buoyance of the kayak will force against the kayaker upon impact.
The water at the bottom is churned up and air-ated, so the impact is softer. If you were to launch of a 180ft bridge with flat water underneath the impact would then definitely break the boat and the paddler.
A kayaker drowned last year going over the 12 meter Lundbreck waterfall that doesn't have anything close to the volume this fall has . He was held under by the recirculating water at the base for 10 minutes. He was an expert kayaker and had successfully gone over this waterfall many times before, as have many other kayakers. One is taking a random chance for death doing this.
I used to ride my motorcycle here. Those falls sometimes look like a trickle, this must be during the spring that he did this. AWESOME! If you go. go BIG hell go HUGE!!!!
That's funny cause his dad is the man and LOVES that Tyler pushes himself on waterfalls. He also kayaks hard whitewater with Tyler and is a bit of a wild man himself. Tyler's run is a CALCULATED descent and the odds of him sticking it were in his favor... And he did stick it... And he didn't die. So... I guess you have no idea what the fuck you're talking about.
I hope you got something in writing from Redbull and Gopro saying they would pay for your wheelchair, feeding tubes, and/or casket. At least tell me you got that much in the Risk/Reward matrix. Congrats but a few seconds worth of RUclips video is NOT worth your life.
shanedude93 Sure, but how great would those memories and even money from sponsors be when he's sitting in a wheelchair or laying in a casket? Risk vs. Reward, it just doesn't add up.
***** Risks vs. Reward. I don't have a problem with risking, but only when the reason is worthy. Such as protecting fellow Soldiers in combat. And for the record, I now spend most of my time pursuing an Engineering degree. SSG U.S. Army (Retired, medically) Combat Infantry Sniper, multiple tours. And I have a nice life, thanks, hope you have one too.
+Ryan Taylor its his life to kayak, if you cant see that then you just dont understand the meaning. he didnt do it for a video, he did it because he lives it. wake up doofus
WOW - just WOW!! What a rush, dude - glad you made it out safely!! Great to have mates to watch your back and maybe a mom that prays ;) Congratulations - even this many years later!!
The fact halfway over you see it's already a white out and looks to be submerged is terrifying, then the wash machine pool at the bottom. Being in a kayak and performing the duck roll is probably the only way of escaping the power of the shower
Additional risk presents itself at 2:37 in the final drop segment. You can see the falls take a bump on the way down. The bump is within sight of anyone planning on doing the drop, but who would notice it until hitting it? Any unexpected bump on the drop could alter one's orientation from feet(-on-pegs) first to back-of-the-neck first, or sideways or whatever. It seems pretty obvious that he could have easily been killed if his orientation was suddenly bumped out of alignment. Very risky stuff!
It pisses me off that something this amazing only has 1100 views that was probally one of the most difficult things in the realm of sports and pisses me off that more ppl dont reconize that
@10missgloria Why so serious? This man is living his life, testing the limits of the human body, and experiencing something that not many on the face of this Earth can claim they've attempted or even considered attempting. The day that he does pass away, he will be remembered for attaining something you haven't. The day he passes, he will be remembered for living his life and loving it. What will you be remembered for? Besides trolling on someone else's accomplishments?
SWEET! Only in a dagger baby! haha That should be the official advertisement for the Dagger Nomad. So apparently I SHOULD get one. That guy has balls of steel.
Plenty of people will remember this guy and the things he's accomplished. It's not about being remembered though. It's about the rush! Nothing compares to the feeling you get from doing something dangerous and amazing! Some people choose to live their lives cautiously and play it safe...good for them. I just don't see the fun in that!
dude whats with all the negativity, this is awsome ive been kayaking for 6 years now and i can aprecaite how amazing this is, he's not just some guy that decided to kayak a waterfall he's been paddling for years so he knows the risks more than some fat guy sat at a computer, that are only jealus because they havnt done anything with there lives ='D
@ClassVKayaker I believe it is completely real... He wasn't shown coming out of the falls because it would appear they didn't know where he would emerge. Furthermore, although it may take more skill to run class V creeks... it takes more daring to run falls of this magnitude. And he did survive so... either he is very lucky or has perfect technique or both! Congrats!

Height: 189ft 57.6072m
Gravity: 9.80665 m/s^2
Free fall time: 3.427623s
Velocity on impact: 33.6134 m/s 121.0085 km/h 75.19123 mph

you didn't correct for the drag coefficient of the mans GIANT BALLS.

when you run a high waterfall, the most important thing is to get your boat vertical to the surface before hitting the water. otherwise you could easily broke your back or something else.........
yhea back/spine injury looks guaranteed with this crazy shit. but if they drop vertical how do they figure they won't impact the bottom with the nose
Wow...gets me pumped watching it.. makes me wanna step it up.
Holy F%%%%%%CK that's truly amazing! My hat of for that guy!
He should try angel falls lol jk
I used to ride my motorcycle here. Those falls sometimes look like a trickle, this must be during the spring that he did this. AWESOME! If you go. go BIG hell go HUGE!!!!
That's funny cause his dad is the man and LOVES that Tyler pushes himself on waterfalls. He also kayaks hard whitewater with Tyler and is a bit of a wild man himself. Tyler's run is a CALCULATED descent and the odds of him sticking it were in his favor... And he did stick it... And he didn't die. So... I guess you have no idea what the fuck you're talking about.
John Maxwell says the guy named maxwell
amazing, i go cliff jumping here a couple times a year. but you have to wait until July August when the water volume goes down.
Ain't nothing compared to this
incredible! but you shall be reported for talking on your cell phone while driving. LOL
Yes, very dangerous
love the back of the kayak view
I hope you got something in writing from Redbull and Gopro saying they would pay for your wheelchair, feeding tubes, and/or casket. At least tell me you got that much in the Risk/Reward matrix. Congrats but a few seconds worth of RUclips video is NOT worth your life.
Ryan Taylor It meant more to him than a few seconds of youtube video.
shanedude93 Sure, but how great would those memories and even money from sponsors be when he's sitting in a wheelchair or laying in a casket?
+Ryan Taylor lmao you must live a sad life
+Ryan Taylor its his life to kayak, if you cant see that then you just dont understand the meaning. he didnt do it for a video, he did it because he lives it. wake up doofus
WOW - just WOW!! What a rush, dude - glad you made it out safely!! Great to have mates to watch your back and maybe a mom that prays ;) Congratulations - even this many years later!!
Tryna F?
What a RUSH!!! Man! Gotta get in the water soon.
The fact halfway over you see it's already a white out and looks to be submerged is terrifying, then the wash machine pool at the bottom. Being in a kayak and performing the duck roll is probably the only way of escaping the power of the shower
I'm on Acid! :]
It's more of capturing something amazing... and yes I would like to see people showcase their talents.
Toothpick races in gutters or that intro to Land of the Lost, comes to mind.
That is as heavy as it gets! I remember when we thought celestial falls was the envelope!
ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC / SUPERHUMAN / EXTRAORDINARY / IT'S GIGANTIC !!! ADMIRATION GUYS ! BEAUTIFUL VIDEO .
It pisses me off that something this amazing only has 1100 views that was probally one of the most difficult things in the realm of sports and pisses me off that more ppl dont reconize that
Ive seen this place. Its called Palouse Falls which is in the eastern Washington State
Nice job Tyler. Stay safe out there.
Gotta love the kids that are so young they can't even comprehend a world before HD GoPro.
Really great performance congratulations 👍
Great video, love it !
Amazing feat..keeping watching regularly to motivate my self...Rise of a Superman :)
I believe that he said in an interview that he dove 20 ft down.
I've been there in person. That thing is massive. Video doesn't quite do it justice.
Robert, it DO go down!
ps: dream result is the BEST film ever made !!! love it :D
Did a real good job
Just before impact, a satellite photo was taken showing 2 massive balls dangling from the sides of the kayak...
Woow..You're so brave guys...
It was one guy....
Still epic after 13 years
Insanity!! You have to see the fall in person to understand how crazy this is! Vid doesn't do justice!
His poor mom 😥
@10missgloria Why so serious? This man is living his life, testing the limits of the human body, and experiencing something that not many on the face of this Earth can claim they've attempted or even considered attempting. The day that he does pass away, he will be remembered for attaining something you haven't. The day he passes, he will be remembered for living his life and loving it. What will you be remembered for? Besides trolling on someone else's accomplishments?
The feeling he must've had after making it out of there lol especially seeing that waterfall. Pretty fucking epic✌
This is so sick. Love this Video so much. All my respect to all tribe riders out there. Best Crew in the world :)
IT DO GO DOWN
Absolutely Awesome Young Man!
Well he's not that young anymore. lol
How did the imapact
Feel like that wasnt a small fall i would love to do this eventually but this is amzing ❤
SWEET! Only in a dagger baby! haha That should be the official advertisement for the Dagger Nomad. So apparently I SHOULD get one. That guy has balls of steel.
this is insane how he survived that impact zone
Plenty of people will remember this guy and the things he's accomplished. It's not about being remembered though. It's about the rush! Nothing compares to the feeling you get from doing something dangerous and amazing! Some people choose to live their lives cautiously and play it safe...good for them. I just don't see the fun in that!
dude whats with all the negativity, this is awsome ive been kayaking for 6 years now and i can aprecaite how amazing this is, he's not just some guy that decided to kayak a waterfall he's been paddling for years so he knows the risks more than some fat guy sat at a computer, that are only jealus because they havnt done anything with there lives ='D
absolutely amazing drop dude ;) next step for you, Murchison Falls in Uganda, which aren't possible to pass according to me :p
Jordan G. Over Niagara falls would be a severe challenge and down the Niagara river to Lake Ontario!
Congrats!
