  • It's a horrible feeling knowing that I haven't been able to give 100% to my lovely peeps, but the realities of traveling abroad for a week and a bit were that I was only able to do my best as far as possible. Well... I'm back now and will be delivering three quality new stories every week; back to my Mon / Wed / Fri schedule.
Tonight's tale is typical of the ones I like best: a real slow burner that doesn't answer all of the questions it poses. I had a lot of fun reading it and hope you all enjoy it as much.
Have a great week everyone; see you again on humpday!

Good Thursday morning. Having woken at 5 a.m. I chose listening to a few tales rather then trying to go back to sleep. It's a good time for creepy things. I enjoyed this one.

I just started listening to this channel a couple of weeks ago and I love your narrations and I like that the stories aren't the same as every other scary story channel out there. I am somewhat of a connoisseur when it comes to channels like this as I listen to them while I work and in my free time and this one has quickly become one of my favorites.

"With the cunning of serpents..." though your delivery of that beautiful line was perfect, I still had to chuckle. Any snake owner can tell you that serpents are often dumb and clumsy little oafs. Virgil, my pine snake, often scares himself with his own tail, causing him to throw a literal hissy-fit. He has also bitten himself by accident four times while attempting to 'catch' and missing his pre-killed food (two more times than he's ever bitten me); two of these times he latched on so stubbornly that I had to pry his mouth open. Dante, my Central American boa, will believe himself to have a firm grip on my shoulder when he only has looped a coil around himself, leaving him to go rolling off my shoulder and into my lap. Heck, even wild snakes tend to be dirt dumb, as your average garter or ribbon snake will often startle from basking and go crashing quite loudly and obviously through the grass at a person's approach... oh, so stealthy indeed.

Omg "dumb, clumsy little oafs." That's so funny though, would have never expected that. I really want a little snake 🐍 but don't know what to get.

CharlieTheUnicorn - Many kinds of snakes make great pets! The biggest factors in figuring out what you might want is how big the species gets and how fast it moves. My number one rule in getting a snake is to only get a snake that has been bred and born in captivity, this helps to make sure you get a snake that's free of parasites and is used to humans and does not encourage stealing snakes from the wild and hurting the wild population.
The younger the snake, the better, as if you socialize the snake, first by introducing it to your scent with a smelly sock in its hiding area, then frequently placing your hand calmly in its enclosure, and finally handling it on a regular basis while its small, it will come to trust you and other humans and see you as just part of its normal environment. I trained Dante, my boa, this way as I planned to use him as a classroom pet. He's a big hit with kindergardeners and young elementary schoolers whenever I bring him along when running a reptile educational outreach show since he's so used to grabby hands and unexpected pats. It's a big help to my vet as he's so easy to treat and do yearly exams on since being man-handled is just a part of daily life. Though snakes aren't social animals, he generally takes interest in my movements during the day and will often come out of his cage and climb up my arm and onto my shoulder when given the opportunity. He also leans into my hand when I rub his back, often shifting himself so that I hit a knotted muscle, and will settle down when stroked under the chin, at very least tolerating the handling if not enjoying it outright.
My personal favorites are Central American Boa Constrictors (their species is Boa constrictor imperator or B.c.i)-- these include Nicaraguan Boas, Blood Boas, Hog Island Boas, Tarahumara Mountain Boas, etc. They stay relatively small, with males averaging 3-5 ft long and females 4-8ft - the males are very similar in size to a corn snake. These snakes are about the size of a cat and don't eat anything larger than one medium-sized rat once per week. Boas tend to be slow (my boa cruising at max speed is still slower than my walking speed) and easy-going since they're ambush predators who spend 90% of their day snoozing, and they're quite hardy. A thing to note is that despite being sufficiently different to be classified as different species or sub species, they're still considered the same species as the Colombian Boa (B.c.i.) and Red-Tail Boa (B.c.c) which can reach lengths up to 16ft, which may make it illegal to own in some areas. The general rule of thumb is if a snake can grow to be larger around than your arm/thigh and longer than 10ft, they can be a danger to children if they're very hungry or scared.

I'll say this dear Doctor. You know, I'm sure, that many have stated they could listen to you read a phone book or something similar and be happy just to hear your magickal voice. So many of the stories you read are as good as your voice. Tonight, however, IMO, I quite enjoyed your reading of a phone book. I rarely give such a critique. However, I am blunt and honest and call it like I hear it. You did a magnificent job Dr. Creepen.

This story is written superbly and is an excellent modern take on the medieval notion of the "prankster demon", which are slightly more benign than their biblical counterparts and were known to play a whole range of jokes on unsuspecting humans, such as making windows fall and doors refuse to close. If provoked or chased, they can do more malicious things such as make milk curdle or even ruin a harvest and threaten a village with famine. As a matter of fact, one of the very first gun control laws passed in the world, in a town named Lubeck, Germany in the 1500s, was done in order to prevent the attraction of prankster demons to the town. Apparently, Church officials believed that the townspeoples' tradition of long-range target shooting with highly accurate and advanced rifled muskets, with the clouds of fire and sulfur stench upon the guns being shot, were demonic in nature and the fact that the bullets, which were stabilized by the rifled barrels and could hit a target over a mile away, proved that a demon "helped" the bullet in it's flight. Of course, now, we have learned that the true reason for the banning of firearm use in Lubeck, was due to the fact that the ruling chivalric order of knights and feudal lords realized that an armed civilian population with such skill with deadly weapons posed a serious danger to their continued rule over the land, which was enforced by the sword and lance and had the backing of the Church. What they really feared were not demons, prankster or not, but heretics and rebels, especially those with the means to fight back against government oppression.

Long spoiler theory: I know that the author has given some clarification, but here's my take anyway. Amanda goes to class and rides the bus, so she is human enough to probably have a tuition bill, college ID etc. But, from the early part of the story when Billy sees the writing on the window, it's possible that he's delusional. The writing seems to appear out of nowhere, Amanda always seems to be disappearing or behaving strangely. From that point, Billy starts acting obsessive and strange. He blows off work, he feels completely freaked out by any interaction with the girl. He starts trying to stalk her, basically. How could Amanda find out not only his name, but his mother's phone number? That doesn't make any sense. But, if these interactions are happening mostly in his head, that does make sense. His mother even mentions that the girl sounds young. That could be his mind trying to tell him that his obsession is wrong. The call he gets sounds distorted, and he reacts to it by getting violent, as he does later in the house. At the mall Amanda says all kinds of flattering things to him that really she would have no way of knowing. But it could be things that Billy thinks about himself. When he opens the letter, he says he knows the area well, and when he gets to the old house, he recognizes the grandfather clock, but it's not enough to throw him off his obsession or tell him that something isn't right. He either is imagining the clock, using a memory from the past, or he is actually in the old house of grandparents (I lean toward the latter). All this adds up to him being totally unstable. Even if Amanda is an actual evil creature, and not just a delusional incarnation of a girl he knows only from the bus, odds are that most of the action is taking place in Billy's head. I think his violent instability caused him to start the fire himself.
My first take of the story was that something was missing, but after analysing it, the ending reminded me of the old 60's and 70's horror flicks that would take place in old gothic estate mansions. There are a few of them that revolve around the question of supernatural events vs. crazy delusions, such as the Haunting and House on Haunted Hill, as well as bunch that I used to watch on UHF channels on Saturday afternoons as a kid, but whose names I've long forgotten. And now I'm just showing my age. ;)

I was considering the possibility of there being an 'unreliable narrator' to the story. Thanks a lot for this great comment, dani.

Very interesting analysis! Also, you say that the author has given some clarification, but I could not find it anywhere... Would you mind explaining what the author said or just provide me a means of finding it? Thanks a lot!

Oh, I love you! You just totally redeemed this story for me. I honestly feel the author should rewrite the story with that concept in mind. It's well written, but this reframes the content in a much more interesting way. It's very convincing that she's creepy all throughout, so if it turns out that he's actually creepy too but doesn't know it because his brain is fucking with him, that's a mind-blowing twist. And it makes him more sympathetic, and her too.

Billy Was a bully. Amanda is "a man duh" and billy's cousin. When younger Billy bullied his male cousin for being feminine, he then got a sex change change and turned into Amanda. Trying to live a normal life Amanda encountered billy on the bus and sought revenge.

ery rtyu she is more of a femme fatale of film noir. She seduces men into doing horrible things, like murder in exchange for love and the victim is often gets into trouble or she disposes of them after the victim does what she wants. Examples include Phylis from Double Indemnity and most of the females in Hitchcock film.
