how high are you aiming to hit with the side kick kekomi ? do you ever try to hit head height or solar plexus height is max ? i am asking what height is this kick effective
a video on how to shape the foot for all the kicks is a highly wanted video :) much love with the mae geri front kick, what is the highest effective height for it?
Thank you, great advice. I spent years performing only passive stretching and did see benefits, but active stretching was really what made a huge difference. I hope this channel continues to grow, great for all karateka.
I started japannes karate at 8 years old at the time we where doing lots of stretching then but after you practice for a long time is not need for to much stretching because your muscles know your capabilities after a nice warm up. Thank you for your Great video!
In a world that is growing more disrespectful toward traditional martial arts, I appreciate your insight. I trained in Kyokushin Karate up until a yellow belt and I honestly can say that even though I did not complete the process, the discipline and respect I learned from that process prepared me to walk into every dojo I did after that. Thank you. OSU
This is spot on, I had a friend who could do the splits easy, at the time I was almost there but it was a struggle. When it came to actual kicking, I could kick to my full flexiblity but he couldn't get nearly as high. I was alway told to do warm up first, then dynamic stretching like leg raises, then all the proper kick training, then at the end do relaxed stretching. I just found your channel and subbed, really great stuff.
Another excellent to point demonstration & explanation, on the mechanics of the human body. For training strength & flexibility in kicking techniques 🤜🤛
Again perfect instruction .. At 50 years old i have to do just this everyday i call it mobility stretching its mandatory just to keep what kicking ability i have. any Mobility/active exercise you ccould share would be appreciated mostly hips / hip flexors Thanks Agin thats for the Motivation
Thanks a lot Sensei! Just come home from my 6'th session on Kyokushin and was stretching like crazy, in the Dojo afterwards! I am pretty agile but would love to get a whole lot better. This was total new for me. Will take it with me ❤ Love your videos! OSS!!
Thanks for the advice, I'm near 40 and only just started shotokan karate for a year now. My hamstrings have always been tight so hopefully this will help
When you've kicked head height enough times, you won't even think about flexibility and technique. It will just happen, the same way a low kick happened
@MA1980c its more the yoko geri for me, can't get enough height. My other kicks are fine but I know I can improve. I've no issue with power it's just the flexibility 👍
How to kick higher: Step 1: Be Johnny Gardiner himself Step 2: After failing miserably on being him, because you're not, watch his tutorials Step 3: put it to work, comment here "Hey Johnny, I did it", and wait for his reply. I'm sure you guys will enjoy this journey 😂😂😂
Great advice as always. I hear differing things about the importance of kicking head height. In your opinion how important is it to progression in karate?
Really it's not important at all, it's just nice to be able to do. (Unless you plan on competing then it's more important) but low kicks are far more realistic and useful.
Thanks for the quick reply and appreciate i the feedback. I have found high kicking the most challenging aspect of karate training so this is all very helpful.
Hi Sensei. To understand your lesson, do you recommend some dynamic stretching followed immediately with static stretches, to improve your kicking height before your Karate activities?
Yes you can do that, or simply just the dynamic stretches first and then static after the session. I’ve done a recent video where I talk a little about this. It’s the most recent of my videos on my channel.
@@jkgardiner Thank you for the response. I was thinking something like a maintenance diet/typical day of eating for you. Maybe also discussing some past diet mistakes and adjustments you have made to maintain a low body fat while remaining strong and powerful.
Recap:
Improve both your passive and active R.O.M. as well as strength of the muscles of the midsection.

@@slingshotshooter7536 generally the body is the highest, hips and knees are better targets.

with the mae geri front kick, what is the highest effective height for it?
Don't forget that muscle memory is a big part of doing unnatural motions. And that develops through repetition.
@slingshotshooter7536 I'd keep that to the body as well. The higher it goes the more risk of missing or being caught.
Best teacher sensei
Great lesson. 👍
Fantastic concepts, time for a dedicated book on these training methods!

Very good 🥋 🥋
Very useful
Verygood
This is perfect timing. I was just thinking about this today. It's a really good point you're making between active and passive range of motion.
Fantastic video, got me thinking a lot about developing flexibility through active stretching. Something I never learned in my training.
As Always on the point advices which I really appreciate.
Thank you Sir 👌
Great!! You are very Good Bro!!

Can someone start karate At age 37 and he has a karate background in his youth and becomes champion?or it's late at this age??
It depends on what level of champion you mean. Like world champion? And it also depends on the federation because some have categories for 35+ etc
Yes like world champion@@jkgardiner
Subbed. Can you please make a diet video?
Thanks. I can do, what kind of diet? Building muscle/strength? Cutting body fat? Improving recovery?
