I can see in your techniques that you know what you're doing. And your teaching style is great. If I could have found more teachers like you when I was younger I know that I would have gotten a lot further. Thank you for sharing, it is very much appreciated.
Sir, your explanation of the roundhouse and back kick was spot on. I teach Chang Mu Kwans traditional back kick loading my knee high into my mid section, but I see the benefit of not lifting so high, instead bending the knee back. I find that it doesn't hinder the power of the kick and improves the quickness of the technique. Thank you for the valuable tip sir.
Thailand kicks are powerful but these Japanese kicks look so powerful as well! One of these kicks in my torso and my intestines will burst!! WOW! SUBSCRIBED!!!👍👍👍
Great video ! The lining of the front foot is the technique that I’m looking for. Thank you. Please do one that covers the front kick, side thrust kick and back kick in one movement as well.
Oh man I haven’t seen such a quickly executed ushirogeri in my dojo definitely gonna borrow these tops and try to surprise somebody! With control of course! OSS!
Very instructing video! If I had to rank kicks in MAs, I would deem leg sweeps first, mae geri second and ushiro geri third. Whatever is your MA, combat sport, self defense system etc…these techniques are nearly an asset. Congrats on your vid! 👍
Awesome lesson! I will definitely practice these pointers. I struggle a lot with front kicks (going upwards instead of into the opponent) I wonder if you could make a video on this topic.
Keen golfer just taken up karate (age 59!) I love it and this channel is great, helping me to understand the moves, and learn the terminology. Speed kill’s technique 😮. What is telegraph 🤔? I think those fast hip moves going to add yards to my drives 🙏
Telegraph is when you make a movement that tells the opponent what you are about to do. The hip rotation from golf will carryover nicely to karate and vice versa 👍
This is actually my best kick but I only make my sparring partners stumble back. I don't generate the power to knock the wind out or someone down (Kyokushin practioner) which is my goal. Seriously taking notes to practice this on my Ushiro Geri drill days. Hai!
Outstanding explanation. Been doing shotokan for 2 decades - never been explained to me this well. Can I ask for some troubleshooting however? When I do the spinning Ushiro-Geri, I tend to lose my balance as/immediately after I land the kick. Any idea what I could be doing wrong?
@@mohda.9420 thank you, do you mean when landing on a target? If so try to work on pulling back the kick to the chamber position (tucked position) after impact to regain balance
No, no , no , NEVER kick and then step back, ALWAYS continue through the target on a straight line and step forward ready to throw combinations!!! Full power through the target on a straight line. Otherwise most of what you show is correct, keep your knee high and your foot tucked tight as you turn so you cannot get jammed by your opponent , he will only run into the kick …. I’ve kicked opponents out of the ring with this in tournament!!! NO< NO do not step your front foot over, that is a telegraph, just rotate and point your heel, that is your sight as you momentarily loose eye contact but the line from your heel keeps you aligned on target…. No disrespect intended, I’m an 8th Dan and love this kick. And get your final foot position better, like a side kick with bottom of heel extended, the rest of your foot tucked back.
This is a shotokan karate back kick, the foot position is not the same as a side kick. It is a different technique to a turning side kick. The front foot, as explained in the video, is a teaching method to get the correct alignment because the biggest problem most have is missing the target. When I deliver it in sparring, this step across is not used.
Hi John , another technique , perhaps underrated but can be devastating ,,,in combat ,, or freestyle kumite , and competition , is good old ashi bari. Foot sweeps many different ones , ankle ,,, calf ,,,,, sweeps ,
Thanks for this. I have massive issues with Ushiro geri and Ushiro Mawashi geri... so this is so helpful. What I noticed was in your intro, you hardly move your front foot at all. It's almost Kyokushin style. I started in Shotokan, moved to Kyokushin, so I'm having trouble twisting into Ushiro without moving the front foot. Getting there tho'✌🏼😊 Ushiro Mawashi is a bit easier strangely. Probably due to the momentum. But only one side. Hip/neck injuries really hinder fluid movement. Any ideas for helping that?
I'm not sure what your specific injuries are, but are they permanent or something that can be rehabilitated? A suggestion might be to focus more on hip rotation and keep the head and neck fairly still, this may help, I think technique should fit your body, rather than trying to fit your body into a technique.
Thankyou 🙏🏼 Yes, they are semi-permanent... in that I am hoping to clear them. Old injuries, calcified. I think the way you've shown to sink, then twist...that will help. I'll get into drills with that technique and see how I go 😊@@jkgardiner man, you're so damn quick tho!!! 😁
Either use it as they come forwards or set up with some hands or maybe another kick, or you can simply find the right position through movement and fire it in when the time is right
Thanks for the video. But in my opinion, the backward rotation should be done with a shoulder blade leading it, like sensei Asai did. Its more powerful. Ossu.
Maybe but allowing the shoulder to come round too much changes it to a turning side kick, which I addressed in this video, accuracy is potentially reduced and speed. There are always variations to techniques, you need to find that which suits you.
One of the several good karate moves that work nice. You have to time it right or else it can leave you vulnerable Just cut the nonsense and learn the Thai clinch, that with good punches typically ends it faster
This is the best explanation of how to execute Ushiro Geri, I have seen so far. Thank you a lot and keep up the great work!
Thank you 🙏
Hello, could you teach us some ways on how to break the Muay Thai long guard with karate techniques???@@jkgardiner
A LESSON ON USHIRO GERI (BACK KICK)
I totally agree.👍
Excellent video and explanation. Would love more videos like this on other techniques.
I can see in your techniques that you know what you're doing. And your teaching style is great.

Thank you for sharing, it is very much appreciated.
Very nice explanation! The pointers are just what is needed to correct students. Clearly explained. Kudos
That's the moat comprehensive breakdown of Ushiro Geri I've seen. Extremely helpful, many thanks!
Your technique is flawless, and you are very good in explaining the execution in a simple and direct manner. Keep them coming, Sensei! 🥋🙏🏻

Thank you so much for valuable training videos please continue training video 🌹🌹🌹🌺🌺🌺🌺
Great video ! The lining of the front foot is the technique that I’m looking for. Thank you. Please do one that covers the front kick, side thrust kick and back kick in one movement as well.
Again: simple explanation, simple set up, great results. But I need the practice! I need videos like this👍
Thank you 🙏 I'm posting at least one video per week so please subscribe if you haven't already and you should be notified every time I upload 🥋👍
Thank You! Great way of teaching. Osu! 😊
These are awesome tutorials man, really easy to understand. Great explanation & demonstration🤜🤛
another excellent video thank you sensei john
Excellent details and form 👌
Excellent explanation, thank you

Great details, very helpful. Thanks!! 🙏
Good tutorial it works great in freestyle , fast , sets up for follow ups to with twisting techniques ,
Nice 👍👍👍
Awesome demo,
Benny Urquidez “the Jet” made very good use of dispatching an opponent with this devastating attack.. well explained

Yea I know exactly how to solve that, it's quite a common problem. I'll do a video 🤜
Highly appreciated sensei 🙏
Great tips. Will definitely be practising. I have the same issue with my jodan front kick so am looking forward to that for too.
*vid too

A true legend
Shay checking in from dublin Ireland thank you
Wow, powerful ushiro Geri is my best for me. Then a good kicker is always a good kicker.
I like this explaination
Thanks alot
thank you Sensei , oss
Would be great to see you interact with Hung Gar masters in China! Or whichever Shaolin practice preceded Shotokan
Shukokai kicking techniques to pads were the hardest I ever saw. The result of body mechanics (Sensei Tani )and regular practise
This is actually my best kick but I only make my sparring partners stumble back. I don't generate the power to knock the wind out or someone down (Kyokushin practioner) which is my goal. Seriously taking notes to practice this on my Ushiro Geri drill days. Hai!
Try first Joe Rogan turning kick.

The kicking leg should be more extended that.

Whats the best way to set this up so the enemy dont see it and can it break ribs or a leg?
Either use it as they come forwards or set up with some hands or maybe another kick, or you can simply find the right position through movement and fire it in when the time is right
SECOND REMINDER FOR DEMONSTRATING WITH RIGHT & LEFT. REST IS GOOD.
Thanks for the video. But in my opinion, the backward rotation should be done with a shoulder blade leading it, like sensei Asai did. Its more powerful. Ossu.

If you study karate in a reputable school clinching is part of the curriculum. I’m sure he does.
My sensei doesn't tell us to move the front leg cuz its telegraphing so we just come up with the back leg
Yes I addressed that in the video. The step across is a learning exercise to get the correct alignment
Oh yh sry im must have missed it
Could you make a video on bassai dai?
Here you go: ruclips.net/video/0AfxcQSVY98/видео.htmlsi=vU3a1JAq0k-Oalox
Jimbei!!
Ashi ushiro is much faster, and therefore much efficient, as also the other kicks with front leg.
