This is not about patriotism. This is specifically about the Vietnam war. ALL young men received draft cards at the age of 18 with no choice in the matter. Then they just waited to be called to go to the war. The wealthy had ways of getting out of going to war. John Fogerty (lead singer and writer of the song) is angry. The Vietnam war ended up being fought by middle class, poor and minority boys because they didn't have connections to get out of it. This is a classic anti-war song.
Minority boys?
And the sons of certain wealthy families (including the sons of certain senators), got exempted from the draft.
Exactly.
@@krakalaka911 Middle class, poor and minority boys. They're all boys.
@@krakalaka911 Middle class boys. Poor boys. I meant they were all 18 year old boys. Sorry if it looked to you as if I was insulting minorities. I certainly.was not doing that.
It's amazing how lex can connect every sound or voice to something unique.
"It sounds like he ate a lot of Halloween candy!" "You know what I'm saying?" - Fantastic.
She wants to rock out, she connects to almost every rock/metal band
It's "Wet maccasons" all over again! She has a way of seeing and or hearing things differently than myself and I'm thinking most people. It's adorable.
Not the typical streamer who talks about voice/voice viscosity.
She cracks me up. Lol. Shes adorable!
You gotta remember there was a draft during the Vietnam War, and that people with connections, i.e rich people, could either get deferrments, posts where they'd be guaranteed to never see combat, or be declared 4-F by bribed doctors.
Right, they couldn’t use fake bone spurs or deferments to get out of serving.

A dark addendum to a very dark song: The son of Chesty Puller, one of the most decorated Marines in history, went to Vietnam, where he lost both legs and most of both hands. When he got back, he went to law school, married and wrote an autobiography which won a Pulitzer Prize. It was called "Fortunate Son," as ultimately, despite his grievous injuries, he found a way to embrace life. Just a couple years later, his marriage broken and his demons resurrected, he took his own life.
Sad. Very sad.
I read Puller's book. Shocked when he took his life a few years later.
That poor bit of history is a hard slap because at the end of engagement in French Indochina, country was united in communism.
All wars are bankers wars...... and war truly is..... a RACKET.
I have never heard that before. And I’m a big ccr fan. Thank you for that info
As a boy during the Vietnam war three of my older brothers were drafted. My oldest brother never came home. I hardly knew him. My Dad was heartbroken. I didn't understand it at the time but all his prodigious energy and drive just died. He just went through the motions. I always resented it, thinking he was cold and distant, until he was dying and I got the chance to actually talk with him. He told me he loved me for the first time, and that he was proud of me. I felt like a truly fortunate son.
You are Darlin💖 My dad fought in the jungles of New Guinea in WW2 & brought it home with him so we were never close due to his alcoholism & violence ,me & siblings, had to endure. He had what they call Shell Shock (mental issues) & I was on my way to see him & let him know that the past was the past & I loved him. BUT, he had a fatal heart attack 6hrs before I arrived. Good thing was he knew I was coming to see him before he passed & I cherish that.
I'm an old Vietnam vet. I was the door gunner on the Huey with the M60
This is an antiwar song
Thank you. My dad was in as well.
"He sounds like he ate a lot of Halloween candy..." "It was like if bacteria could beatbox...." Oh, to be a fly on the wall in Lex's mind when she is listening to new music.
If you watch almost any movie about Vietnam, you'll hear CCR or the doors. They really defined the sound of the times in my book.
The doors never wrote a song about the Vietnam war, which was a popular theme for bands at that time. A common misconception is the song Unknown Soldier which is not about a Vietnam soldier.
@@balboaunderdog1968 right... But their music is still featured in those movies as representation of the sound of that era
I served two tours, 1965-66-1970-71. Like all Marines I volunteered.

This is definitely the best reaction channel, I’m glad I found y’all. I enjoy listening through everything you guys say. You guys really seem to feel it and go in depth with it and it really shows some passion for it
You have to put this song in the context of the Vietnam War. By 1967 the US had been involved in the war for 4 or 5 years, and it was becoming apparent that there was no goal and no end in sight. And the draft was still active, so men were being sent to Vietnam whether they want to go or not. The sentiment that those men were just being sent over to die was a growing concern in 67. (By 68, after the Tet Offensive (look it up) that sentiment was rampant.) There were ways around getting drafted, or at least avoiding going to Vietnam, but you had to be fortunate. If you had money, you could go to college. Politicians and high ranking military officers could get their sons sent to military bases elsewhere.
Fogarty was poor and didn't have those advantages, so he was drafted and served in 1965. Even that was enough to anger him into writing this song when his term was over and he'd founded CCR.
Involvement in Vietnam goes back to the '50s. By the time we ramped up feet on the ground it was well known that we couldn't win. And still we sent boys over there to die.
This is one of my favorite protest songs from the era!
oh HELLL yeah! This video is all clips from Tour of Duty!! I loved this series growing up used to watch with my dad all the time. It's of course about the Vietnam War and the soundtrack featured lots of CCR, Jimi Hendrix, Rolling Stones and many more from the era. The music was like another character in the show and really set the vibe and tone of each episode.
I also grew up watching it with my dad and he just recently got the show on DVD and has been watching it again.
She has the sweetest smile. So cute.
John Fogerty was in the service in Vietnam and this was after he got out of the service, Thanks for Your Service
Have you tried The Rolling Stones yet? "Gimme Shelter" is one of their best songs IMO. The two songs compliment each other well, being released in the same year and exploring similar themes.
In my time in the military, I've seen every reason for joining that you can imagine. For some people, it's financial, like good insurance, good pay, paying for college (that's me). For some people, they just couldn't figure out what to do after high school and the military seemed like a viable career path. For some people, it's a family tradition going back 3, 4, or 5 generations. Some people grew up in terrible situations and need to escape. And, yes, some people are there for patriotic reasons. They feel that the best way for them to show their love for their country is to serve it.
The Draft Was Imposed When They Made This (and orhers) Song.....
That's now! Back then we had NO CHOICE! As @Linda dollar said in her reply - We had the Draft!
….and I’m so thankful for every single one of you! Much love from Michigan 🥰

I just discovered Someday Never Comes a few years ago, and it quickly became my new favorite
This song is the very essence of the year it was written.
Lex is so spot on with most of song analysis, Half of CCR's songs were about the Bayou :)
The hilarity is that CCR is from California, not the Deep South, yet they sound like they were born and raised there.
CCR tried to sue Fogerty as well, because his solo music sounded too much like CCR, which he wrote all the songs for...
@@Yvolve The part of California that they are from (Central California, Lodi), especially back when they were kids, is a different planet from L.A. or San Francisco. It's all farms and blue collar.
@@Christian-vq8rd I know, but there's no bayou's there, which makes me smile. They sound like they grew up hunting alligators in a swamp, but are from rural California. Great how they paint such a vivid picture in their songs. Amazing music nonetheless, love CCR!
@@Yvolve No bayou, but there's thousands of miles of waterway in the Sacramento River Delta.
@@chuckwilliams6261 I believe that, America is massive, but a bayou is a very specific thing. That's what makes me smile when I hear their music, how they can make it sound like it's in their blood.
I remember in 11th grade watching several of my friends being drafted for the Vietnam War. I remember watching TV after my high school graduation and seeing what my lottery draft number would be .. it ended up being 56 a low number. I only missed not being drafted by 3 days. But I went.
John Fogerty is a insane singer. Like you said. He just has that grit and dirtyness in his voice.
Uhhhh like he ate too much sugar????? Pretty sure nature gave him that voice, not his diet.
Lex you are always on point, Brad you always bring the stoicism game to the reaction videos!
Lex feels the music and so on point so fast. Brad thinks about it and can get close, but yet to to be on point that I've seen.
Lex has the most beautiful smile I've ever seen.
Man, I'm at the point where I don't care what song you're all reacting to, I've just gotta see Lex's expressions! It's fascinating to see and her metaphors are so far out there and unique but still make sense. (At least to me) Peace and love.
CCR is amazingly good. Music that just makes people happy :)
As a 1966 high-school graduate, this was part of a most frequently played list. CCR was big.
Absolutely love this song! Growing up, me and my dad would jam out to this. Before every soccer game, baseball, paintball, anything we needed to get hyped for. Always good memories!
It would be a lit party if we all played the drinking game every time lex said you know what I mean 🤣🤣🤣🤣
John ALWAYS sings from his soul.
Ccr was the sound track of the Vietnam war,I read a comment section a few weeks back somebody wrote back in 67/68 as a 14yr old younger brother not a day went by without him worrying about his older brother who got his call up papers. I believe he made it home safely after all his tours.that just broke my heart.
This song always brings tears to my eyes. Yes, his passion and subject matter are so poignant. It's a bittersweet rock. Long live CCR, El Cerrito's finest from The Bay Area! :)
Lovin it.. A couple more great songs by CCR are " Lodi" and ' Susie Q"
Love to watch the way you guys react and the way y'all bounce thoughts back and forth, perfect.
Its so simple, "Right Brain, Left Brain"
I love how Lex gets into CCR she's absolutely awesome
It may help to know that the singer John Fogerty was drafted (and served in the Army Reserve as a supply clerk I think) …. He was borne in California …. In the Vietnam war era their was a draft and the vast majority of soldiers were drafted and had to go wither they wanted to go or not (and most were poor) …. In this day and age soldiers volunteer which is incredible …. Most young people don’t get that …. Either way American soldiers (and the sacrifices they make) deserve a TREMENDOUS amount of our respect …. God bless your family members who served us …. You guys have a great Chanel buy the way !!!!
Dad's favorite band was CCR. My old man served in Vietnam through '68, draftee turned CIB after dropping out of college and being outright threatened by college staff with the draft for not providing them further funding. Trained on mortars, given an M-60 machinegun after in-country. Which he initially and understandably disdained due to worse options for survival, being such a big target. Yet he was more ferocious giving up his M-60 later on after achieving E-5 and squad leader. Easier to pull a big trigger than make regular decisions regarding your peoples' lives, I suppose. Said he was most proud of keeping all his boys alive. Definitely a win in my book.
I wouldn't be able to post this is he was unsuccessful.
I used this song as an outline for a 1st year Liberal Arts/Native Studies Paper. My professor told me it was a great beginning for a Masters Thesis.
This is the Vietnam movie, and it’s in practically every movie involving Vietnam ever
Think of a ‘Rummage Sale’ as a ‘Yard Sale’, he’s basically saying wealthy people over indulge, don’t pay their taxes and then the IRS seizes and sells all of their property to pay the taxes. He wrote this after being drafted, the night before he was to be inducted.
John Fogerty was a Vietnam war vet then formed CCR when he got back with a lot of perspective to put in his music !
One of the best of dzns of great anti-war songs to come out during the late 60s through mid-70s (when the USA finally pulled out of, and admitted at last, our defeat in Vietnam)... We're currently -- right now -- facing the same reality in Afghanistan, which eventually surpassed America's previously longest war in Vietnam; yes, when we the people don't learn any lessons from our failures, history will (more or less) repeat itself!
I love y'all's friendship?!! U truly respect each other's views and thoughts! You're VERY LUCKY to have that kind of Love 💕😘 live the matching red too!
He's singing on the Vietnam war....
It's meant to be a diss to the rich not having to fight on the front lines! Our government overwhelming drafted the poor or less fortunate??
This was one of the songs the guys in Vietnam loved.
Fortunate Son was my first CCR song that I heared, and that was an awesome knowledge with this band.
P.S. Thanks for a such soulful reaction
Lex's aura is so bright and contagious that it made me subscribe. I'm on my 15th vid binge watching and I'm still going on.
Lex's way of describing things cracks me up but always has an awesome perspective that I love.
1967 was Vietnam and this song is about turning 18 being drafted and going to Vietnam for your senior trip...UNLESS you were a fortunate son or fortunate one....(college)
Great band. Saw John Fogerty at Bourbon and Beyond in Louisville 2019. The Old Man stole the show that night. He was my 17 year old son's favorite act.
Vietnam was a nightmare for peace loving young in the USA. Almost every band had a protest song. This 1 song was their anthem because of how true it is.🔥🧨🏴☠🧯🚿💊🩸⚔✒🪖📯♨🥀💣💥
The average age of a Viet Nam soldier was 19. The rich got away with not going because their parents found ways $$$ of getting them out of going. This song is a protest song against the establishment at that time.
John Fogerty actually did serve in the army during the Vietnam war from 1966-1968. He served in the reserves as a supply clerk and apparently in those days the reserves never really got sent overseas, so he got lucky.
This music PUTS you THERE. I was born in 1978 and I can FEEL the emotions from his music from there era. Its a true gift. 💜🙌🏻
The video are scenes from an 80's Vietnam show (think is was Tour of Duty), but the song was an anti-Vietnam war song. Mostly against how the rich (Senator's sons) could avoid the draft but those unfortunate to be born with a silver spoon were drafted. Since Vietnam we have gotten rid of the draft and gone to an all volunteer military.
Still a great CCR song, for another check out Proud Marry, Running through the Jungle. Another group from this time period to check, Buffalo Springfield "For What It's Worth".
Yeah its "Tour of Duty" wich had the song "paint it black" as an intro
@@h4d3z Paint it Black was a great intro for that show.
@@snix3297 It really was. Still have all the seasons haha
Vietnam: my Father and both his brothers were all there at the same time; they were not fortunate sons and they survived thank God
Same- thanks to them all.
John Fogerty was a Vietnam veteran. He wrote songs critical of WHY we were in Vietnam, but he never disparaged the soldiers doing the dirty work.
My brother in law was in one of those choppers. 19 years old and drafted into the war
During Vietnam if you were a "fortunate son" you could get out of serving in the military. A recent President received 5 deferments and eventually got a doctor's note to disqualify him from serving there.
Brad looks at Lex like she's tripping LOL OMG she's is so funny but she's on top of the music
Lex loves CCR, which is proof of her innate musical gift.
These are at least a yr old but I'm watching because of her smile - it's infectious. She smiles thru the entire song. Ear to Ear grin and she wears it well. Then I realized what drew me in. I do the same thing whenever my favorite songs come on - I have thousands - so I smile a lot...but I do not look pretty like she does.
This Girl (Woman) just exudes joy, reminds me of my Granddaughter who just bubbles over with joy!
Please react to Nightwish - Ghost, Love, Score. Given Lex childhood filled with classical music and melodies, she'll love this. It's like a metal opera. The singer, Floor Jansen, has an insane voice. Impossible to explain, but you'll get goosebumps!
you know they could choose the Tarja version if you dont tell them the Wacken or Buenos Aires version right?;-)
@@paulriddle7818 Good point! I didn't think of that, should've added the link. Usually the Wacken version is the top result, given the insane amount of views.

That line gets me every time.
Love love love me some CCR…!!! They have so so many hits. His voice was so soulful and emotional. That rabbit hole is definitely worth going down with CCR. Much love from AZ 🌵
Sad and happy times, Vietnam, our awesome soldiers coming home, hippies, jocks, free love, flower children, bell bottoms, Woodstock. Great rock and roll.
I love your energy Lex. Most of the reason I watch
John Fogerty served in the National Guard in his El Cerrito, CA hometown pre-CCR during the early 'advisor' days of the Vietnam Conflict.
CCR's "Someday never comes" is a masterpiece that no one ever reacts to, check it out.
ditto
There aren't a lot of CCR songs that I particularly like, but they do a few that are among my Classic Rock Favourites, and this is one of them.
CCR's cover of " I put a Spell on You " is a must hear if you want to hear John's most soulful voice, and his guitar solo is insane or " Put a candle in the Window" ✌️♥️
"Long as I can see the light". Just on great song out of so many by CCR. There is a pretty good cover of "Long as I can see the light" by the Rival Sons. Well worth a listen.
There was a draft going on in the Vietnam war, so if your dad had money he could probably get you out of going to the war. So, this was a big anthem song during the war. This so g has probably been in every Vietnam movie too.
Wow, I just came across this again and both of you are so smart and funny but on this one especially in the ending discussion, Lex was just freaking killing it but inside and compassion and understanding and casual acknowledgment of things. But the overall effect was definitely a wonderful conversation. You guys are amazing.
First of all I’m from Louisiana. I was watching this guy sing on tv and my dad goes “I could never understand what he was saying.”
Love your show. It's true, young people often think going to war is glamorous, heroic, brave, until fire and shrapnel explode around them and the sound of dying penetrates into their soul never to find it's way out. And not just the war depicted by this great song, but every war,WW2, the Civil war, Revolutionary war, the Spanish American war. Young soldiers patriotically marched away from home to the sound of Waltzing Matilda, naive smiles on there faces and kisses thrown from there sweethearts, only to return, if they return, with war wounds of unending variety, hope obliterated and a mind tormented with endless nightmares. War is not glamorous.
During the year after 9/11, more people enlisted into the military than in any single year since then. In total, 181,510 Americans enlisted into active-duty service that year, and 72,908 joined the reserves, according to the USO. Before the attack, many weren't aware of the threats against the United States
best 70s rock band easily
The range of your genres on here is crazy
That's why this is the best place to be.😉
CCR is such a great band 🎸🎸🎸🎶🎶💕💕
Im 56, raised 3 sons. Any male age 18 has to register. If a war breaks out the middle class and poor young men get sent! Wealthy people get out, story of the world. They are fortunate.
CCR was the soundtrack of the Vietnam War!
Lex you have a unique at looking at music you hear… ❤️❤️❤️❤️I’m binge watching your channel right now. I went into the military to follow i my fathers footsteps and to serve my country it really wasn’t a choice it was a obligation to make a family legacy, I never pushed my kids to go into the military and never would!!!
The Rummage Sale and the Tax man statement refers to places where they had personal property tax and folks would have home that looked like shit on the outside to try and reduce the amount they had to pay.
The verse you were questioning around 5 minute mark is referencing the draft and how some were able to get around it.
They are our brothers in those choppers. Thanks y'all, you have an awesome channel.
If you only knew how many times this song was played in outposts in Afghanistan
I had my 19th birthday on a combat patrol in the Central Highlands of South Vietnam in 1972....Delta Co. 1st Bn. 12th Cavalry 1st Air Cavalry....
I was legit LOLing all by myself here like a mental patient at Lex just not giving up on the Halloween candy thing. I've never noticed that effect either. Maybe I've not eaten enough candy in one sitting, or my voice isn't good enough to begin with for me to notice a difference if it gets "rough."
Also, the way most rock singers roughened up their voices is the old fashioned way: whiskey and cigarettes--Lemmy, for example.
Right after 9/11, there were more volunteers for military service than the services could absorb. It was born from a deep emotion of patriotism.
Everytime I hear this song the movie Forrest gump pops in my head lol
There's some episode of the voice somewhere where someone has to sing this song and when they're practicing it the week before he is there to coach them. It's really cool because he talks about the emotion that he had to put in the song but how he didn't have to try because this was happening back then it's not like he's singing about the past. That's why it's soulful and sounds like it's flowing right out of his emotions.
idk if it's still there but you guys would really enjoy the Woodstock documentary that was on Netflix a couple years ago. It would give you so much context to what was going on at the time.
Everytime I look up a reaction to a good song I’m so glad to see y’all pop up. Mfs actually listen to the lyrics and break the song down instead of trying hard to be funny and talking over the whole song not paying attention
Inheriting star spangled eyes in this song actually refers to people sending other people to war via the draft.
The line about “the house looks like a rummage sale” refers to people trying to cheat on their state property taxes. In some states, the property tax wasn’t restricted to real estate holdings, but also included your personal property. Every year, the tax collector would visit your home and make a quick assessment of the total value of your household possessions. Then you’d have to pay a tax, again and again, each and every year, that was a percentage of that personal property value assessment.
The song criticizes people who show off their wealth; but then hide their most valuable possessions, when the tax assessor makes his visit (replacing their valuables with valueless junk, for that one day).
Babyboomers from the Midwest would be very familiar with that form of state taxation, and would also recall the contempt felt for hypocritical, rich, tax cheats. Neighbors would slander neighbors, with vicious gossip, accusing each other of being tax cheats; even if the accused were honest taxpayers. It could get ugly.
I don’t know of anywhere, anymore, where taxes are assessed on household property. However, it used to be common; but was so resented that states discontinued that form of taxation.
My wife’s state had that personal property tax system, and she remembers the tax collector’s visits. My state had already stopped taxing that way, by the 1940’s; but, before CCR wrote that song, I had heard about those taxes and the tax cheats (from my parents, who still hated the tax collectors and the gossips). That lyric was understood by everyone, when the song first came out, as being a brutal insult, directed at a lot of people.
The personal property tax was different from state to state; just like today’s taxation of automobiles. Some states levy a big tax based on the current value of all your vehicles; but most states only levy a small, flat rate, road use, tax (and don’t charge anything for vehicles in storage).
John Fogerty is a BEAST
John Fogerty "The Old Man is Down the Road" has always been one of my favorites.
