  • Hey everyone! In this video I answer the question "Should you get a biology degree?". I briefly discuss the details of my 4 year biology program and if I would recommend majoring in Biology for an undergraduate program. I go over some of the requirements needed for a bachelor's of science in Biology for the program that I was enrolled in and if I would do it again if I could go back. If you're thinking about majoring in biology, working in the laboratory field, or any other science-related field then this video may help you on your decision.

    Before I watch the video, as someone that has a BS in Biology, I would recommend a Biology degree to people that don’t exactly know what they want to do after they graduate. You will have most of the prerequisites for nursing school or an MLS program, you can go to medical school, dental school, etc. It’s a great foundation to have. There aren’t a lot of jobs open for Biology degrees though. However if you know you want to work in a lab, I would say get an MLS/CLS degree.

    • @RisaB
      @RisaB  Год назад +37

      I completely agree!! Describing it as a foundation is a great descriptor as someone who is planning further education because you take sooo many science courses. & when I was briefly doing nursing I only needed like 4-5 prereqs because I had already had most of them. I love having your perspective on this as well!

      @@RisaB When I graduated I was so mad I got a Biology degree lol. But then I realized I was prepared for almost any field. I just needed a little more education. As annoying as a Biology degree is, in terms of finding a job or making good money, it gives you room to try out different fields and figure out what you want to do once you graduate, especially since we don’t really do internships with a Biology degree unless you do research. I’m just glad I didn’t go to nursing school. I like being in my lab with my AirPods in lol.

      I feel like a chemistry or biology degree is good if you wanna work in an industrial lab, but can't work at a hospital lab.

    • @NiqLT
      @NiqLT Год назад +13

      @@marymoore1712 Actually you can work in a hospital lab but it depends. You can work as a lab assistant for sure. Some hospital labs might let you work as a MLT if they are willing to train you and it depends on your state laws. Some will let you start as a lab assistant, train you to be an MLT, then you can take a categorical exam to be certified in that department. The staffing issues for the CLS field is allowing more science majors to work in labs without certifications. Still best to get certified IMO. I also work in a hospital lab but my field is in andrology and embryology so it’s a bit different.

      😂 Yeah that’s how I felt too when I graduated. I definitely had to put myself in the mindset that even though I only have a biology degree, I’m still knowledge enough for things without having to go back to school first. Cause they be out here playing with these entry level job requirements 😂

      This is a bit late but I asked a PhD student in Instgram I followed and answered the same question and she answered that it would be still helpful.
      In my case, Microbiology is the only option I could get and I asked about it, and she said it’s still helpful and as the name itself, I’ll learn stuff in small level.
      Hoping this helped you a bit:>

    I enjoyed watching your thorough video. So, I am in the process of doing a career change, and I am applying to MLS programs right now. Unfortunately, I am in a dilemma! I already have a BS in Biology, so it would make sense to complete a 1 year post-baccalaureate MLS certificate. However, I haven't been in school since 2017 and I am concerned I might not be prepared for the rigorous MLS courses and certification exam , especially if I matriculate into an online program! Should I just do a 4-year MLS program to better prepare myself? I have enough credits to complete it in 2 years! Any advice is appreciated!

      This is such bad advice. I’d advise anybody here to not be discouraged by people giving out horrible advice due to their own personal experiences. If you’re passionate about biology and it’s what you want to do, then do it. There is no such thing as a useless degree, there is something as not being capable enough which sounds like the original commentator suffers from.

      Unfortunately there just aren't a lot of opportunities for Biology majors out here. I also majored in biology and 3 years after graduating it's really been a struggle to find a decent job because is just too general and very theory based. If you are passionate about Biology try and pick a degree that is a bit more specialised. Like nursing or microbiology atleast you would stand a better chance and get a job with a better salary

Some of the comments are TERRIFYING! I’m scared to take on this degree if it’s useless or if you’ll only make $15/hr because I can make that working at McDonald’s. Someone please give advice for biology majors, I’m a little discouraged reading the comments :(

      Study literally anything else. If you want to be a doctor you don't need to major in biology, you just need good grades so spend your undergrad years studying something that will work for you if it's the only degree you end up getting. Sure right now you might want to become a physician but four years from now you will be a different person and may well want different things. Studying subjects like engineering, business or accounting will open far more doors for you than a bio degree ever will. A twenty two year old with a BS in computer science is going to make more money and have far more options than a thirty year old biology PhD.

    • @RisaB

      Hey, it’s ultimately up to you. I would look up the requirements and job market for those degrees. I don’t know much about a biology degree with an emphasis on biotechnology (sounds ok to me) but I would lean more towards a straight biotechnology degree if available. Good luck with your schooling!
