One of the funniest if not THE funniest moments on this fantastic show. The mystified look on Bartlet's face when he says "I wasn't supposed to take them both?" cracks me up every single time. Then the way he tries to stay involved in the conversation despite being so high he had his own air traffic controller just makes my sides ache. Brilliant acting from a superb actor and perfect support from the rest of the gang makes this a perfect TV moment.
Oh man, this series. It could make you pump your fist with excitement, it could make you grip the arms of your chair with tension, it could make you wipe your eyes with sadness and, in scenes like this, it could make you split your sides laughing!
I LOVE this scene! 'I-I'm Sam, sir' 'Sam, of course you are.' 'Toby...Toby,Toby,Toby...Toby's a nice name, don't you think?' 'There's always resignation' 'Hot damn, now you're talking!' 'Mr. President, I left you alone for two minutes' The whole scene makes me laugh so hard I cry.
Having chronic back pain myself and being on several prescriptions a day, the wife and I really get a kick out of this scene and it lends a hand to several real world ' incidents ' we have had. I miss this show and its writers
This could be my favourite scene from the series! Everything about it is perfect! I love the little smile shared by C.J. and Sam when he gets a hug from the President! I also love how grumpy Toby is about getting his hug!
That was me after an ear operation I once had. I don't remember much of the after math, but apparently I was talking about how much I loved everyone, offered to buy the doctors and nurses lunch, and told my mom I was going to buy her a new car. Worst part of it all is that my Father, great guy that he is, decided it would be good to film clips of this on his phone.
A couple things: 1) i love how some of the staffers exchange muted smiles of amusement over the fact that the old man was stoned. 2) Its a good thing the country didn't come under attack while he was under the influence. It might have been a mess.
So are we just gonna ignore Claudia Jean's priceless face at 1:42? Are we just gonna let that trying not to laugh and lose my job if I laugh face pass? 🤣🤣
Man for being the OLD guy on the set he looks pretty AOK there. I say this with all the respect in the world for NOT wishing that Charlie would have the struggles it seems he does but WOW getting back to regular life has given back a ton of years to Martin.
One of my subordinates took this exact same cocktail (plus an anti-inflammatory) after falling off a ladder. She wasn't loopy like this, but very upset that she couldn't stay awake as if she was somehow failing the rest of us. I took a look at her prescription and asked how the hell she wasn't comatose (unlike the president here, her doc told her to take all three pills). It took everybody in the room loudly ordering her to bed before she got over being upset.
Haha he looks like such a goof when he has his head leaning back on the sofa, like he's just pretending to listen, around 2:56. And I love that they reference the MS thing about a season early, at 2:19. Skilled writing, great acting :)
oh my gosh they did reference MS excellent foreshadowing by sorkin, utilising the scene where bartlett's a bit high on vicodin & percocet, kind of letting his personal guard down.
I miss John Spencer. Such an amazing man and actor. And the bloopers from this scene are hilarious 😊 Other little known fact. Rob Lowe grew up down the street from the Sheens. They were friends and neighbors.
This one and the one in season 4 just before the Bartlet - Ritchie debate and they're having a quick fire q&a in the oval, and the president bets the senior staff that Toby cant stay quiet if he gives a bad answer, cracks me up every time.
D'you think that the cast knew that Martin Sheen was going to play it like this cos their reactions were priceless. I love this scene and I love this show!
I really liked when Sam was done talking, he slapped his knees. And then right after that, the President clapped his hands. Nice timing and rhythm there.
This scene reminds me of how Will gets high in "The newsroom" love seeing one of the many parallels and similarities between the two series by Aaron Sorkin.
look on Bartlet's face when he says "I wasn't supposed to take them both?" Martin Sheen is so funny
I'm guessing you'd love him in _Grace & Frankie._
I thought he was going to laugh at the end and say he pranked them all.
I like how when Bartlet moves in for the hug, Toby is like, "LEO..." -_-
He IS Grumpy Cat.
Even better! He's Grumpy Cat's Mentor. Or weird uncle.
My favourite moment. Just the look
More like Squidward.
I was looking for this comment! His face 😂
3:25 I love how Charlie talks to the President like he's a 5 year old kid: "Mr. President, I left you alone for 2 minutes."
Sheen said it was the most fun he ever had in front of a camera. Many takes to get this.
"i"m seriously thinking of getting a dog" classic exit line
🤣❤👍
I watch this JUST for Toby's deadpan-but-desperate "Leo...?!". And his expression during the hug; like it's the first one he's ever received.
Mandy's "Guuuurl" side-eye is giving me life.
The only bad thing about these first season clips is the unfortunate reminder that Mandy ever existed.
I'd completely forgotten who that character was.
You mean it was not
"Here's what I think we should do."
(long, awkward pause)
"Was I just saying something?"

Toby is my personal favourite, but moments like this make me wander to Bartlett.
"Was I just saying something?"
"Toby, Toby, Toby, Toby....Toby's a nice name. Don't you think?"
It's a hilarious moment, but Josh getting pranked on election day was better.
@MrPeterpiper1969
I just love how you said "He was so high he had his own air traffic controller." I'm definitely going to steal that. Too funny.
"Done!"
"Wait." Kills me every time. Also Sam and CJ's smiles when Bartlet hugs Sam are just the best
Oh my god, can any of you imagine the greatness the crew of the Bartlet Administration would've gotten up to with a dog?
Yes. Yes, I can. And I now feel completely robbed.
Can you imagine the directorial problems with a WH dog? W.C.Fields had a line about this.
Abby should have gotten a cat. Every White House needs a cat in residence.
Almost all modern presidents have dogs, because everyone loves dogs...except one recent former president.
Oh man, this series. It could make you pump your fist with excitement, it could make you grip the arms of your chair with tension, it could make you wipe your eyes with sadness and, in scenes like this, it could make you split your sides laughing!
+ArcaneAzmadi I hope you are pumping your exited 'first' in private-LOL!!!
"Before I go, please let me say this. I'm seriously thinking about getting a dog." Hahahahahahaha
At the end of the episode there should have been a Dog and Bartlet’s chasing it with Charlie and then the staff goes oh god and they all chase it.
It's the dramatic pause that makes it. Kills me every time! 😂
@@helenl3193 right 😂😂😂
@@lox3csimiami22 nothing like a well-written scene, well acted!
...he says after hugging Toby who looks so much like a Bassett Hound it hurts. I wanna hug Toby.
I LOVE this scene!
'I-I'm Sam, sir' 'Sam, of course you are.'
'Toby...Toby,Toby,Toby...Toby's a nice name, don't you think?'
'There's always resignation' 'Hot damn, now you're talking!'

The actors were corpsing (unscripted laugh mid scene) and I think Rob and Alison had to find a distraction in the room to avoid ruining the take :P
No matter how many times I re-watch this show, this scene always cracks me up
The look on Leo's face at 1:07 is priceless.
I love it when it looks like he's going to say something important, it ends up being some nonsense. lol "I'm seriously considering getting a dog."
Anyone ever notice he tips off the MS here? "I know my muscles are not, you know...but my mind is sharp, and I can focus."
Well, no. Having a bad back he took muscle relaxers.
Sam: "How do you feel, Toby?"
Toby: "Like I just got screwed with my pants on."
Sam: "Excellent!"
Bartlett: "Give me a hug."
*leans in to hug Toby*
Toby: *in alarm* Leo! [Save me! Stop the incoming display of happy emotions!]
Isn't it after this when Toby says the best line.... "there is LITERALLY no one I don't hate right now" !! GOD I LOVE THIS SHOW!!
"Let me just say this, I'm seriously thinking about getting a dog." Makes me bust out laughing everytime I see this clip.
That was me after an ear operation I once had. HOT DAMN NOW YOU'RE TALKING
I think he meant me, sir.
@@jerodast AH
Of all the crackup moments in the scene...this is the brief exchange that always brings me to tears with laughter.
"I wasn't supposed to take them both?" Hilarious, still love this show!
A couple things:
1) i love how some of the staffers exchange muted smiles of amusement over the fact that the old man was stoned.
2) Its a good thing the country didn't come under attack while he was under the influence. It might have been a mess.
I don't know if you've seen the Newsroom, but they had an episode where that happened (sort of)...
Toby's "Leo" at the end always cracks me up
Does the president reference his MS in this episode as he says "I know my muscles are not, you know, my mind is sharp"?
Oooo maybe.
As far as I know they hadn't thought up the MS plot at that point, but with Sorkin who knows..
Possibly, but i think it is more in relation to his acknowledgement that he inadvertently OD'd on drugs and that he is compromised.
I think it's reference to his age
Listening to the west wing podcast Aaron says that the MS story line came from Stockard Channing wanting to act more in the show :)
This is one of the reasons why I loved the show so much. The humor. I was so right on.
"I wasn't supposed to take 'em both?"
LOL!
I miss this show so much.
Leo's reaction was perfect!!!
"Charlie's a great name." LMAO XD.
So are we just gonna ignore Claudia Jean's priceless face at 1:42? Are we just gonna let that trying not to laugh and lose my job if I laugh face pass? 🤣🤣
Man, these are top-notch actors and they are absolutely struggling to keep it together.
such a great clip! one of my favorite of many from this amazing show! 4 more years!!
Man for being the OLD guy on the set he looks pretty AOK there. I say this with all the respect in the world for NOT wishing that Charlie would have the struggles it seems he does but WOW getting back to regular life has given back a ton of years to Martin.
One of my favourite scenes. Everyone that’s had strong painkillers knows this
This is a brilliant scene. Brilliantly written and performed.
I liked Sam's reaction to the hg.. Smiling bright ! 'He huged me! He likes me!'
One of my subordinates took this exact same cocktail (plus an anti-inflammatory) after falling off a ladder. I loved that show ❤
CJ's facial expressions alone make this scene amazing.
brilliant show!
By far one of the funniest things I've ever seen on a TV show. MS is a genius.
"There's always resignation." "Hot damn, now you're talking," is without a doubt the funniest delivery of a punchline I've heard.
I love NiCole Robinson so much - Margaret was an absolute delight in the series.
That is one of my favorite scenes of the show
Honestly, the best ever.
"Hot damn now you're talking" - i love that part :) Bartlet cracks me up
I love Leo's face when he said "I wasn't supposed to take them both?"
Always take both!
Leo is thinking: wow! That must feel great! Lucky bastard I wish I had a bad back…
"You guys are like family." Also, Mandy.
So in this scene, Charlie is the parent, and President Bartlet is a toddler left alone for two minutes. 😂😂😂😂🤣🤣
Why are there nine down-votes? It should be five votes down.
I see what you did there...
+Liz Viau net 1044 votes up but who's counting
Liz Viau Oh, VERY good Ma’am! Nobody tell Brown Town what it means! (Kidding ;))
It's always a treat seeing President Bartlet rolling in with blue jeans and a Notre Dame sweater on.
Haha he looks like such a goof when he has his head leaning back on the sofa, like he's just pretending to listen, around 2:56. And I love that they reference the MS thing about a season early, at 2:19. Skilled writing, great acting :)
oh my gosh they did reference MS
excellent foreshadowing by sorkin, utilising the scene where bartlett's a bit high on vicodin & percocet, kind of letting his personal guard down.
I don't think he ever got that dog.
I love how much CJ is loving it
CJ the struggle is real with her not to bust out laughing LOL
OMG!! One of the funniest moment on the show.
I miss John Spencer. Such an amazing man and actor. And the bloopers from this scene are hilarious 😊 Other little known fact. Rob Lowe grew up down the street from the Sheens. They were friends and neighbors.
Watched this today in class.. its great
This just about kills me every time, it's so priceless.
Toby’s “Leo -_-“ made me spit my tea 😂😂😂😂
If anything, his Notre Dame sweater was made by Starter.
That definitely takes me back.
"Here's what I think we oughta do."
*total silence*
Martin Sheen is GREAT in this scene.
This one and the one in season 4 just before the Bartlet - Ritchie debate and they're having a quick fire q&a in the oval, and the president bets the senior staff that Toby cant stay quiet if he gives a bad answer, cracks me up every time.
looks like emillio in this scene
Totally. I'm thinking of the peyote scene from Young Guns
+Kasino80 thats what I was thinking
especially when he says "this what we're going to do."
The look on Josh’s face. It was priceless
One of the funniest scenes of the entire series.
"before i go please let me just say this. I'm seriously thinking about getting a dog"
haha xD
that was so random
Sam looked so happy after he got hugged.
I'm hoping that it's an intentional irony that there are five 'down' votes for this extract
12 more people have spoiled that now, what a shame...
CJ was loving this: she couldn't stop smiling, LOL
This show was just epic!
1:07 I love Leo's face when he realizes the president is high as AF.
So much love. X]
You can totally see a lot of Charlie in Martin in this scene I wonder if he was channeling his son.
13 years later and still hilarious
We watched this in class today and I was dying lmao
as a pain killer addict, this is extremely accurate.
Yes...and I'm jealous of him every time I watch this lol
Sam: So how do you feel there, big guy?
Toby : Like I just got screwed with my pants on
Ouchy.
D'you think that the cast knew that Martin Sheen was going to play it like this cos their reactions were priceless.
I love this scene and I love this show!
Leo is jealous he remembers feeling that good....but he also remembers the nightmare of feeling the other way.
I am with Leo
i love how he motions rolling up his sleeves. tooo funny
Toby looked absolutely miserable when he got hugged lol.
Richard Schiff's ability to become the most visibly uncomfortable huggee is impressive. Not to mention the plea for help beforehand.
"Leo-"
"Mr. President, I left you alone for two minutes." Oh, Charlie.
"Mr. President, I left you alone for two minutes...."
i love and everything about him. his smile
I've always wondered, is the president foreshadowing the whole MS thing at 2:18?
OUTSTANDING!!!
In the back of my mind, I hear a frustrated voice going "Even while *high off his ass,* Bartlet would be better than any of the shot we have!"
This is my favourite scene. If I'm ever trying to convince someone to watch the west wing, I'll show them this
toby getting hugged is just priceless!
good one Darrin!!
this series is too brilliant... I can keep watching it... I MISS IT! Barack is a nice guy, but he ain't no Jed Bartlet ;)
I really liked when Sam was done talking, he slapped his knees. And then right after that, the President clapped his hands. Nice timing and rhythm there.
I love that Martin Sheen had known Rob Lowe for over twenty years at this point. They really were like family!
This scene reminds me of how Will gets high in "The newsroom" love seeing one of the many parallels and similarities between the two series by Aaron Sorkin.
This must be how Boris Yeltsin's staff felt every time he went on a vodka bender.
All I can think of is mr Sheen's opening scene in Apocalyps Now.
