  • It's October 1990 and we are in Basingstoke on a Saturday afternoon, with some nice English Electric & Sulzer thrash. Plenty of classic NSE action with class 50 hauled West of England line services along with a class 205 DEMU Thumper unit. Then there's a couple of class 47's on Inter-City and Freightliner workings while class 442 Wessex Electrics and Cig units complete the NSE front. I love the sound of the loose rail joints - quite a rare sound these days.

Memories of camping down near Dorchester and travelling on the 442s when new. They were a really comfortable journey- even went to Waterloo on them one time.

This brings back memories, I commuted from Branksome to Waterloo using the 442s in the early 90s.

Those class 442s were really good. I think we should’ve never privatised BR, or at least the train building side of it.

Yes SWR wasted a lot of money trying to upgrade the 442s with AC motors and 3 step enhanced West code brakes but then abandoned them for refurbished Class 458 EMUs. The privatised railway wastes a lot of money, far more than what was ever directed at BR. A perfect example was the scrapping of the class 365 EMUs. It was a shame that BREL was disbanded.

Basingstoke before the ends of the platforms had trees growing out them!

A sad state of the railways countrywide! You can see the same in my Llandudno Junction vids, in the 90s nice and clear, now, all around is a jungle!

@@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus yes it can’t do the infrastructure any good. I have even seen vegetation growing out of trackside drain catch pits. And Network Rail wonder why the permanent way floods!

The slam door trains I do remember as I have been on them before they were replaced by trains with sliding doors.
And the Class 442 would still be used on London Waterloo-Southampton Central, Portsmouth Harbour and Weymouth.
