followed the instructions. i mounted mine on the roof on the back and ran the wire through the trunk, and up through. works great!
Such a helpful video. I knew I wanted to run my wire along the window crevasse like he shows, but the screwdriver I was using was too aggressive. I damaged the outside of the wire and eventually severed the wire by tugging on it too much. I will try the credit card thing when I get my replacement antenna, and hopefully have a better go at it.
Thanks for this. I wish RUclips had a tip button because you sir deserve one.
then youtubers would end up being the richest people in the world lol
@@EVGUY13245 lmao this came true
You should spray it with a protectant such as Plasti-Dip to seal it up and get you better weather protection. It will last you a while, but to be extra safe spray it. The great thing about plasti-dip is you can paint it and peel the paint right off if it becomes damaged and spray again. It is essentially a rubber spray, very cool stuff.
I have mine right on the dash and the reception is perfect.
We use either a Canon 5D or 7D, and sometimes even a 60D. However, the quality is all in the lens, so make sure you get a quality pro lens if you want great video. :)
Appreciate the detailed visual. I wasn’t adding a tuner but I did need to run the antenna outside the car cuz mounting inside kept dropping signal
You can mount the antenna inside and just use mount it on the dash by the window
I go through Kaady car wash with no problem of the magnetic antenna coming off. If any worries, just have them tape it like they do with rear wipers.
I am sorry, but satellite radio signals will penetrate plastics so the best place for an antenna is to hide it. In this car, it would under the black plastic shield in front of the wipers and as far forward as possible. It will be invisible and still pick up a signal. On my Tacoma, it was under the bed rail covers. On my Envoy, it will go under the plastic cover over the rear glass tailpiece.
This is an old comment but thank you. I would rather not scratch the paint on my new truck with a magnetic antenna. Thanks!!!
I'd rather get a mast antenna and bolt it on, but I found this informative.
It all depends on the vehicle. Some vehicles have absolutely no issues with the antenna being mounted in that way, some may experience reception issues. You just have to try different locations and look for the best one.
Great video. Very helpful. I was nervous about installing my XM radio myself but this video gave me the confidence to do it and it turned out great! Thanks again.
P.S. I used the end of a plastic pen cap to pull back the weather stripping around my windshield...lol. It did the trick.
You will have to pull the dash open to find out. However, because the radio is so low in the dash, it is unlikely the antenna can fit there and get good reception.
Ive watches your video about 10 times, and its great . But i have a question. On a Lexus 2008 SUV rx, where would be the best location to install the Antenna for Sat. Reception. Any suggestions would be appreciated. thank you, R. Stacy
The labor depends on the unit you buy, the car you have, and the shop you take it to get installed. The unit prices are also different.
I was wondering when you go to the carwash ,you may loose the antenna. But great video about how to hide the cable .
Absolutely not, Those magnets are way too strong for a car wash to knock it off! I had my XM antenna and my GPS antenna mounted on the roof of my Silverado, Neither antennas moved for the seven years that they were installed!
How do the antenna hold up in a carwash?
Thanks, I teally like that method. I have a Dodge truck 2500 with the XM radio built in to the AM/FM receiver. What I need to know is can I replace the antenna that came with the truck with an aftermarket antenna without any signal degradation? My problem is the mechanical device that secures the antenna to the top of the truck has come apart. Dodge dealer has told me that I can't just replace the antenna. The wiring and the antenna all have to be replaced at the same time because it comes as one piece. If I can replace the antenna with a aftermarket antenna it would be a lot easier. I can just cover up the hole with the new antenna and run the wiring through that hole.
An antenna should be fine to be moved from vehicle to vehicle... but I'd go with an antenna specifically branded by Sirius to pick up their signals. "Aftermarket" antennas may _not_ be correctly configured to pick up the specific Sirius signals.
Like your wedding band, looks sharp! Think I'll get my husband one:)
Just a point of correction... silicone is NOT ELECTRICALLY CONDUCTIVE. As a matter of fact, it's a pretty good electrical INSULATOR. Putting "a dab of silicone" under the antenna when affixing it to a metal surface (hood, roof, or trunk lid) will effectively ISOLATE the antenna from the metal surface any negate any realized increase in reception due to a localized surface area increase of the antenna when in contact with metal..
If you want some "extra security" in attaching the antenna, you CAN run a tiny bead of clear silicone around the OUTSIDE EDGE of the antenna down on to the metal surface to help seal the magnetic antenna to the surface. Don't worry... silicone won't damage the clear coat or paint finish to any car.
Do you need to do this if your vehicle has a factory radio with sirius/xm already? I want to install a new radio with sirius, and ditch the factory radio.
100% silicon is definitely a great choice not only for adhesion strength and being waterproof but is also able to tolerate up to 400F. Obviously a car roof gets so hot in the summer months it would hold up far better than tape; especially if you live in a warmer climate:) Thanks for the great tips. Just bought a new Alpine that is XM ready so they're offering a deal. I'm leaning toward possibly adding this on, not 100% sure yet.
+Lori A Plus, it's conductive, so it'd help the antenna in using your cars metal to amplify its strength!
Where did you or do you buy silicon?
No it's not Lori. Silicone (silicon is the element) is a pretty effective electrical insulator. Putting some of that _under_ the antenna, while certainly helping to adhere the antenna to the metal surface, would effectively electrically isolate the antenna from the hood, roof or trunk.
No, it's NOT conductive.
They're speaking about the kind of silicone (not silicon) sealant you buy from the hardware store in tubes.
thank you for taking the time to make this video
Great video. What kind of silicone do you recommend for the actual antenna to help it adhere to the roof?
I have my antenna mounted to the inside of the windshield at the top, and behind the mirror. Everything is completely out of site for the driver, and I don't have to worry about damage to the paint, or the antenna getting torn off the car by a car wash or a vandal. The only time I lose reception is inside parking garages, tunnels, or under a long viaduct.
Are use a piece of Woman’s stocking between the paint and any magnetized antenna, I have never had a vehicle scratch in the last 22 years! I just removed my GPS antenna and my XM antenna from my Silverado after seven years, Absolutely zero issues!
What happens if the windshield gets replaced? Is there a chance the glass people will just crush the cable or knock it out of place?
+GT -R Sure, but if you tell them about the antenna, they should be able to work with it and put it right back how it was.
Could you mount this antenna inside the car under the headliner?
The antenna "receiver" needs to be "line-of-sight", or in this case "line-of-transmission" to the satellite serving the Sirius system. Attaching the antenna to the underside of the roof under the headliner will block any satellite signals from reaching the antenna. Putting the antenna INSIDE the car - on the dashboard under the windshield or on the back deck under the rear window also degrades the receptivity of the antenna. It's still best mounted on either the hood, roof or trunk lid somewhere.
I had mine inside the car and it would keep loosing signal all the time. I ended up installing it on the roof of my car towards the back and now it hardly ever looses signal. Only time the signal drops is inside a tunnel or under a long bridge.
Yes same experience here... Terrible inside vehicle, outside on roof great
I have a 2010 ford F-150 and i do have a button for satellite radio. Does it work for my factory radio?
Thank you, great job. Question can i use that on my 2011 F15 factory radio. The radio has a "Sirius" button, but no Sirus receiver. is the connection universal?
Thanks again
Hello,
Thank`s for replying back to me and thank`s for the advice.
I`m not sure if you`ve had experience with my car but, I have a 2004 Mustang GT coupe and it would be nice if the antenna could be hidden because my car is white.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Cool video.
Yesterday I was wondering if one could mount the satellite antenna like you did with the GPS antenna in yesterdays video but it looks like that might not be the best way for optimum reception.
How to check xm when it say check antenna
Howdy, I had Sirius Satellite installed in my truck in 2006. Is it possible to use the original antenna instead of using the new? If it can, then all I will need to do is install the tuner. Thanks.
What a dual Antenna Multiplexer for
Ive put mine in the back window.
I prefer having the car looking good and a radio that loses signal from time to time.
+ Id be scared for an idiot to rip everything off
What a drama free guy!
Awesome explanation!
Hey there> I have a 2008 Toyota Prius didn't came with SiriusXm Radio only has a manufactory radio. Can install that unit you pulling in that car on your video. Can you tell me where I can fine one that I can have XM radio tooI'm calling from Houston Tx
can a Sirius antenna go bad just asking
track satellite pass the front windows ???
How does this hold up to weather? I live in open country, in arizona where dust, mud, rain and many other x-factors. I've been wanting to install this type on my vehicle(which duel purpose off road/highway) for awhile
Just bought a 2019 Ford F-150, what type of cable do I need to make the application of the Sirius antenna adapter to the Ford antenna thanks Bryan
Most 2019 vehicles already have a factory setup for SiriusXM. I would make sure that your vehicle has one first before buying an aftermarket kit
What if I mount it in between my headliner and metal truck roof would I still get good reception
NO! It has to have a clear sight to the sky. Under a fiberglass shell, bed rail liner or plastic cover works well and hides the antenna.
Would it work if I put it in the crossbar, in the dash I have the same car celica I put my GPS antenna at that location and I get all full bars for signal do you think my Sirius antenna would work
Not likely. The GPS signals are quite a bit stronger than the Sirius satellite signals.
Thats screaming "Break into my window and steal me!"
Right? It makes me uncomfortable too
Jean Urena don't put it there.. or let alone get one.
or just some kid walks buy and goes oh looky * yoink*
I installed SiriusXM on my phone and bought a Bluetooth car kit so you can unplug it it's small plays thru my truck great
The deck is easily removable from dock. Take with you in the house or when parked for long times in unsafe areas.
very helpful video...thanks!!
awesome man thanks for the help!! what do ya recommend for a toyota venza
I recently got my hands on a radio/cd/satellite system from a 2010 Challenger that is a direct install on my 2010 Jeep Patriot. My old radio did not have satellite included. c I need an antenna for the replacement unit. Does Best buy carry anything like this?
Yes they do. That's where I got mine
How much are these and how much is the labor total
I may go to someone and have them install it too much work for me I wish the Antenna could be placed inside because Idw someone ripping it off of the top of my car!
VERY well done video. You do an outstanding job of explaining things.
I have a convertible car (Qvale Mangusta) and it is made out of composite not metal. How would you recommend I mount it to get optimal reception?
wow rarest car in the world you should talk to doug demuro
What do I do when my car comes with XM, so it has the Sharkfin. But I've just gotten a Sirius Starmate 8 which comes with that antenna. Should I Install it the same way yours is?
SomeUrbanNinja some vehicles that come with Sirius xm already have the shark fin antenna and with some you can use the factory antenna I know chevy is very easy to do this you would still need the box to plug into aftermarket Sirius ready radio. find the factory xm box where the antenna runs to plug in and you will simply plug the factory antenna to your new satellite box. in most chevy it is behind glove box which makes it super easy install
Great video !!! Thanks.
i have a 1981 mini cooper with a jvc radio and its sirius ready, but idk how to make it work, there is no aux cord or anything like that mentioned in the video, it also doesn't have a cigarette lighter thing, can anybody help me and give me a few tips on what to do?
Nick DeBernard go online and look up the model of your radio and satalite radio module. It will be a small box that plugs into the back of your radio.
What if i have a convertible...🤔
Horrible placement...when I had an aftermarket GPS antenna I had plenty coverage by either hiding face up behind radio or hidden running along bottom of dash up A pillar and into center of dash close to windshield with wire going down behind windshield for symmetrical and clean oem look no wires visible
great video
will it work under a shark fin antenna
I wondered the same thing...But that long cable probably can not be spliced into the existing wiring from what is under the current shark fin.
You can't just close the door on it I'm trying to make my satellite radio movable between several cars I already have several mounts
Fantastic. Thanks
Can I mount the antenna to the inside of my headliner just underneath the factory xm antenna? Or does the new antenna have to be outside the car?
Use the existing antenna!
@@jayrenner211 if I already have a shark fin antenna can I just put in this type without having to do anything with the shark fin?
@@gailgraham4990 The fin may be your FM / AM antenna? If so, you can't use it because of the vast frequency differences in SiriusXm and FM/AM. Check it out. If it IS an actual SiriusXm antenna, you should be able to find its end somewhere near your factory radio! It's usually yellow or purple.
i really do not want to dig up my car for this,,, also make sure u test it before you mount it, just in case! 😀
Just throw the Antenna up on your roof, no specific area needed, it will still pick up the Satellite signal.
I got this in my car but i dont how to work it lol
This gave me the confidence never to do this. Is Sirius aware that this is 2021 and Bluetooth is out there ??? They want me to mess the the windshield seals and run like 50 feet of wire . Ridiculous
Whatever you do never Mount the antenna inside the vehicle you will have problems like I did, always do it outside! 😁
I have a 2013 camaro can I just use the shark fin antenna ?
This video popped up so I decided to watch it and see how someone else installed there XM radio antenna...I installed mine on the plastic roof spoiler of my 2019 Chevy Silverado Truck using double stick tape. Works great. I did move it to the metal part of the roof a few days later for a few days as a reception test.. seems to work the same, so I put it back on the roof spoiler...
The only time I lost reception and it was with both mounting locations was while driving under large overpasses slowly or being stopped underneath one. Otherwise it works perfect no complaints. If you want to see the total install on my XM unit check out my install video. ruclips.net/video/IEdsszT0orM/видео.html
you dont need to put that to the roof when you take out you old rad they is metal there where you can put it someone will rip it off there thats 4 sure
I've had my magnetic XM antenna on my roof for over 6yrs and it's still there.
Why not just use an axe and cut a flap in the roof? Same level of craftmanship...
This will cause leaks.
Como sincronisar mi telefono con mi veiculo ford mustang 2011
Super jealous of your blue nylon pry bars. My yellow and orange ones get filthy disgusting instantly.
That looks like crap. Just drill a hole where the factory does and get a decent OEM antenna.
2023
He just got $99 for that install.
You could use that on a kayak for shits and giggles
You can avoid this through Bluetooth and get a Sirus app on your phone
And when you're out in the middle of no where and don't have data connectivity, guess what's the winner...
it go's without saying but please do not install this while driving the car
Oh hell no!
Omg... that's not a good site for mounting an antenna... that's not esthetic at all!!
Sorry but this installation is nowhere near elegant...
what if it gets stolen
