  • Stages of labor nursing OB review for nursing students who are studying for the NCLEX exam and maternity nursing lecture exams. This lecture explains the various stages of labour. There are four stages of labor and they include Stage 1, Stage 2, Stage 3, and Stage 4. In nursing school, you must know that the Stage 1 of Labor has three phases. These phases are the Latent (early labor), Active, and Transition phases. Stage 1 of labor will be where the cervix will dilate (open) from 0 to 10 cm and will have hundred percent effacement (thinning). During the Latent phase of Stage 1, the cervix will dilate 1-4 cm, contractions will occur every 5 to 30 minutes and be 30-45 seconds in length. During the active phase of stage 1, the cervix will dilate to 4 to 7 cm and thin (dilation will be 1 cm per hour), and contractions will be noticeably stronger and longer (45 to 60 seconds) every 3 to 5 minutes. The next phase, which is the transition phase, will be the shortest but most intense in regards to the strength and duration of contractions. During the transition phase, the cervix dilates from 8 to 10 cm and thins completely. This phase will lead to Stage 2 of Labor. Stage 2 of labor begins when the cervix has fully dilated and ends when the baby is fully delivered. Stage 3 of labor begins when the baby is fully delivered and ends when the placenta is delivered. Stage 4 of Labor is the first 1-4 hours after the delivery of the placenta and is the time when the mother is at most risk for hemorrhage, infection, and other problems.

Hey everyone :) Thank you so much for watching the video! UPDATE: ACOG.org has recommended guideline changes for cervical dilation for stages of labor: "Cervical dilation of 6 cm should be considered the threshold for the active phase of most women in labor."
Meaning: First Stage "Latent" Labor: Cervical dilation of 0-6 cm, First Stage "Active" Labor: Cervical dilation starts at 6 cm rather than 4 cm. For more information: www.ajog.org/article/S0002-9378(13)01690-6/abstract

I wish I knew about your videos at the beginning of the semester.I am struggling in OB and having a really hard time comprehending the information. I watched one video and suddenly decelerations was clear as day. I started watching more and I am understanding it so well it is amazing. If only instructors taught this way instead of straight from the power points.

Your videos are very helpful in teaching topics that my instructor has failed to teach me in an understandable fashion. Sometimes I feel you are a better teacher than my nursing school professors. I wish you had more videos on more OB topics. Thank you!
