These are great videos! It’s comforting knowing you can still enjoy you’re active job and sports… it’s made me more positive about my own fusion booked next year. Thank you!
Hi, got my ankle fused 4 weeks ago and in 3 days will start walking (with cast). I am very excited and scared at same time because my y story is very complicated, after an osteomyelitic tibial resection and a retrograde nail fixation with 12 cm bone graft from bone bank. Now it’s time to test everything after this hurricane, so I’m thrilled like hell. 57 yo, sport is my life and can’t wait to bike and sail again… Thanks for your videos, really important to me.
Your videos provide hope, reassurance, and comfort in knowing that ankle fusion isn't all that bad. It has been very helpful watching your videos, one I'm not alone and two having someone to share your experience by leading the way. At least there is light on at the end of the tunnel. I'm now four weeks post op and not much to add yet., but do hope to when I get active. it will be very interesting because it is my left ankle and the rest of my foot has been fused, I agree running is out. Also, I had a lower leg close wedge surgery that took out a quarter inch which isn't a whole lot, but considering my very own anatomy this has been a great challenge because one leg is shorter and get awful back pain. Thank you for your videos very informative.
Hi I am 5 months post ankle fusion, not back at work as struggling to walk properly, just ordered Hoka trainers , still have ankle pain, ankle has fused though.i work with folks that come out of hospital and need short term support eg hip replacements, knees , ankle etc, was really hoping to be back at work now, really didn't think it would take this long and is impacting on me mentally...Thank you for the videos
In my opinion the MBT Zee range is better than the hoka. I had a pair of Hokas and after walking for a little while I got pain in the ankle. With the MBTs I can walk all day without pain. Good luck with your recovery
May I ask you a question? I’ve had an ankle fusion operation. Eight weeks in cast. Just gone into a moon boot(4 days)Did you find you still had “some moderate” discomfort/pain in the foot when you started weight bearing, especially when placing the foot down on the heel?
Hello, firstly I’d like to say thankyou for making these videos. I’m currently waiting to have my right ankle fused and your videos have really given me an insight into what life will be like after a fusion. It is a very hard decision to make, but after listening to your experience I feel more confident that I will still be able to lead a relatively active life 😊 I currently also enjoy resistance training and was wondering if you are restricted at all by the fusion for example doing squats and lunges or even burpees? Thanks Ann
For squats you can see in one of my videos that I use weight plates under my heels. Lunges are fine but I prefer the rear leg elevated split squat (Bulgarian split squat) and you can hold weights to increase difficulty. I wouldn’t do burpees because of the jumping action, this would cause pain in my ankle.
Thank you so much had my ankle fusion September 1 23 still working on it they made a ankle brace for me I have to wear it every day could you please tell me if you ever heard of it?😊😊
Im a wrestling coach and am having this fusion done next week right after the season. Little worries about restrictive mobility on the mat. Any suggestions? I'll keep you up-to-date as I progress. Thanks in advance, and thank you for making these videos. I'm working through them.
You can keep good mobility everywhere else except the ankle. Fusion will limit mobility at the ankle. You should be able to adapt. I have been able to adapt in ways for things like cycling, doing squats, running (a bit)
Hi...thanks for the videos, really helpful. I'm just about to have the same op and I note that you said cycling was great. Can I ask if you use or can use clip in pedals or did you change to flats? Thank you
I was never a big cyclist so have never had the clip in pedals. I’m not sure if it would work with the fused ankle? I have normal pedals. I also move my foot along the pedal a bit so I am pushing with the mid foot which is more comfortable
Thanks for the quick response! I'm sort of expecting Clip ins to be ok on the basis that the ankle moves side to side in a twisting motion rather than up or down. Also...sorry...did you need to drop your seat to account for the flat position? Thanks for your time
@@nickjordan6069 again I’m not sure about seat position. Tbh I didn’t cycle much before fusion so I just adjusted my seat to what was comfortable when I got fusion and couldn’t really run anymore for cardio. You may have to adjust the seat

Hi Thank you informative videos really helpful and well made. I have to make a decision soon as have osteoarthritis in my right ankle after running injury and has been slowly getting worse. I am able To cycle without any problems but know I will at some point need surgery. My question do you think after fusion you would still be able to do trekking in the mountains? Not heavy rope type but more like EBC type treks ? I know I am Probably clutching at straws but miss this part of my life the most. Thank you again for giving a bit more positivity about this ! Hello. I’m really not sure if it would be possible. I did an 11km trek but it was quite tame. That was fine for me whilst wearing my comfortable MBT trainers. I’m not sure I could do much more. I have to get my right ankle fused and I'm scared. I was trying to figure out how I was going to drive if my foot is a perfect 90° angle. Do you have to sit closer to the steering wheel in order to have you're right knee be able to push the gas pedal enough?
Don’t worry it’s not a big deal. You have more extension at the knee and hip in order to drive. I just did it automatically without having to think too much. Also your foot moves quite a lot (check out my other video) which compensates for the lack of ankle movement

Hi There, I'am far from the Czech Republic😉 My ankle fusion was made 4 weeks ago. I wonder, have you tried to ski??? And please let me know the best shoe to wear (to avoid the pain). Thanks a lot.
Yes I skied at Christmas and I’m going again next week. I will be making a new RUclips video when I’m back from my ski trip, in approximately 2 weeks. I got a pair of ski boots made especially for me. You might be able to wear normal boots but you would need to wear a wedge in the heel so that you can lean forwards and it creates the dorsi flexion at the ankle (a bit like putting plates under heels when squatting)
I’ve had an ankle fusion. My tibia has been screwed into my talus. The remaining cartilage removed first. I just googled a triple arthrodesis, I haven’t had that. Thanks
Thinking about the fusion and your videos took away some of my concerns. Thanks for that. How long did you wait until you began to work out / do sports after the surgery?
You’re welcome. I had so many operations that I got used to going to the gym on crutches (although you probably shouldn’t) and sitting on machines to do upper body workouts. I didn’t do sports for quite a long time after surgery, at least 1 year. I didn’t realise how much I could do until years later. I was always hesitant and held back but turns out I can run a bit, although it’s not the most comfortable and I can ski again!
Thanks man. I hope to be able to surf a little and unfortunately I WILL ride motocross as soon as I don’t feel pain anymore. That’s why a replacement is not an option for me: If it works I’ll wear it out in no time😂 went to the gym on crutches, too. Never give up! It’s awesome to hear you’re even running a bit and your walking looks just normal. Thanks for those videos!
How long did your surgical pain last? Im 2 1/2 weeks in and while the suture pain seems to have gone I feel like I’m feeling “bone” pain now…and I’m sure the triage team is getting sick of my phone calls 😅
Hey, I know the sport but have never tried it myself. Difficult to say but I would guess that it would be ok but you might have to make some adaptations to how you ride. I presume that you would have to use your knee and hip joints more to take the landing/ momentum. I also think you might have have your foot further back on the pedal. When I ride a bike now I don’t have the ball of my foot on the pedal, (this causes pain in the ankle after a while) instead I have my mid foot on the pedal. Not as efficient or ‘good technique’ but it prevents any pain when cycling. I hope this helps. Please stay in touch and let me know
Hi, I have no swelling around the ankle. There is some bruising which has remained ever since the operation. The doctor assured me that this was normal and nothing to worry about. It doesn’t hurt, just looks a darker colour than my normal skin tone.
