Ankle fusion osteoarthritis how it went

  • What is ankle fusion?
Ankle fusion is a type of surgery to fuse the bones of your ankle into one piece. It’s also known as ankle arthrodesis. The surgery is usually done to treat arthritis in the ankle.
The ankle joint is also called the tibiotalar joint. It’s where the shinbone (tibia) rests on top of a bone of the foot called the talus. The ankle also includes the subtalar joint. This is where 2 foot bones called the talus and the calcaneus meet.
Arthritis can affect these 2 joints in the foot. Over time, the smooth cartilage on the surface of the bones wears away. This results in pain, inflammation, and swelling in your joint.
Ankle fusion is a surgery to fuse 2 or more bones in the ankle. This helps stop the pain and swelling. Your surgeon will make an incision in your ankle to work on the joint. He or she will then compress the bones together and attach them with plates, nails, screws, or other hardware. Your healthcare provider may also use a bone graft to help the bones heal together.
In some cases, an ankle fusion can be done with minimally invasive surgery. This uses a smaller incision and a tiny camera to help do the surgery.

February 9, 2024.....Thanks for posting this video. I had the calcaneus fused to the inner and outer bones of the ankle ten days ago and go back for my first post op visit on Monday the 12th. If everything looks good, I'll get a hard cast and will have to return every two weeks for a new one and eventually a boot like yours.
My procedure DID NOT include the tibia and talus as yours did, and I'm thankful for that so my range of motion in the flex won't be as restricted as yours, but the side to side motion will be affected. I'm 72 and in good health. Your video has inspired me and I MAY TRY doing a video of my own.

Wishing you the best for a great recovery from your op Hoka is another good brand of trainers that was recommended to me after my ankle fusion from foot and ankle surgeon also my podiatrist ! I had my ankle fusion , foot reconstruction Sept 18 , 2019 after 10 years of agony I had to wear a brace for support and steroid injections every 4 months / After op I had a very heavy large plaster for 2 weeks my leg had to stay elevated only moving for bathroom / then air boot for 6 weeks no contact with floor for 4 weeks then last 2 weeks only walking on the ball of my foot / I had a scooter to get around the house that was a god send ! It took 6 months before I could go back to work as I’m a hairdresser on my feet for long hours it wasn’t easy but I got there the surgery was worth it I couldn’t go on the way it was ! I’m doing great now ! I highly recommend following Drs orders to the word it worked for me / Things for me could be slightly different as I’m in Australia !

Seeing the surgeon next week to talk about taking the screws out as it’s a option and I might actually take it even though it’s adding more time to total recovery

Feel for you , I tore my achilles nothing compared with what you have got, but a similar recovery although a soft 'boot' with an angle to stop the achilles stressing and they gradually changed the angle. I did find when I was out of the boot, (which I had been using with crutches) I did seem to have pain in different parts of my body which I guess was to do with walking a bit one sided with the boot and crutches, that took quite a while to go but I just kept doing stretching exercises and that seemed to help, all the best

For the past 15 years, I've relied on a combination of two Naproxen pills (painkillers) and one Lansoprazole (to protect my stomach from the Naproxen's effects) to manage the pain. It made a significant difference in my life, but relying on medication for so long takes its toll. That's why I decided to explore other options and consulted a surgeon about the possibility of joint fusion.
To my surprise, the surgeon suggested a steroid injection instead, considering me a bit too young for major fusion surgery. I was sceptical, but I agreed. To my amazement, the injection has been incredibly successful. I haven't needed any painkillers, and I'm completely pain-free. In fact, I recently participated in an 18-mile charity walk without any discomfort. It's been a game-changer for me.
However, there is going to come a time when I will be in the same boat as you and will need to have the joint fused.
I wish you a speedy recovery, sir. And pain-free walking.

Sorry for the delay and firstly I’m glad the steroid injection worked for you great technology as for me I was old enough for the fusion and I’m 5 months in now and it’s still not perfect by far apparently depending on you perfection it can take 12 months or so which I can see this more likely for my age bracket and landscaping business, I saw the surgeon last about 2 months ago and he said he’s happy with the op and I can if wanted have the screws taken out at some point which I might actually do depends on my next meetings questions on it.
Hope it all goes well for you in the upcoming future 👍

I haven’t done any swimming yet maybe I should as that’s a form of physio as well I guess.
And certainly don’t have the ankle movement I had before the operation but I’m finding that manageable
I’m about 5 months in now and I think it’s going to be a few more months yet before I notice any big differences
