@@Xdev1lG00D Yes, it is as I had said. Hyundai has another dct, that's a 7 speed with two concentric dry clutches, that is almost as slow as manual shifting.
Unless you're on a track, there is absolutely no reason to use that DCT in manual mode for straight line racing. It's faster letting the car do it. Also I always hit the NGS right before I hit the pedal, not a bit before hand. Seems to work better that way. Just my experience so far with my Elantra N.
I have one, and I be with you, in the straight line don't need a manual mode, and that is true about the NGS is right before hit the pedal, also I don't like to used the lunch control.
I bet the N feels faster in daily driving conditions. I used to own a type r and it only felt fast on top. City driving it was a dog and no fun. The N seems more fun.
The N series is run by executive engineer for bmw M series cars. As anyone knows the M series are not designed to be the fastest cars but fun daily drivers. Speed does not translate into fun, if you want fast get a tesla roadster it will destroy both of these speed wise
All I can say is, for being 200 lbs heavier and about 6 grand cheaper, the Hyundai kicked butt! Took the launch despite the Honda starting slightly earlier. Hyundai is for real.
I have a 21 sgp type r. Stock i ran a 2018+ mustang gt (460hp) from 80 to 130 mph and matched his speed till we saw traffic ahead. I dont condone that kind of driving but it interesting how fast the type r is in 6th gear. The aero is truly functional.
Damn! The Korean car market is killing it. This is coming from a Japanese car lover. The Type R may have won the runs, but I can't deny that the Elantra N was right on its rear bumper. I never thought I'd say the day when Hyundai would fail to remain cordial on the raceway.

@Adam Chapman I bought my '12 Genesis Coupe 3.8 R-Spec brand new in 2011. I've had ONE serious problem with it in all these years (and I drive hard). When I did have the issue, I took it to the dealership and they fixed it under warranty with zero hassle. Maybe I just got lucky, but I have no complaints about Hyundai quality.
@Adam Chapman they get 100k miles warranty I don't know what you smoking but those are great cars. I own 2018 elantra sport and is a blast to drive it. not like my older 07 bmw 335i but gets similar vibe.
When doing the rolls, your NGS feature is already off by the time you get to speed since you press it so early. Also, I believe the manual is gonna keep up MUCH better in the rolls compared to the DCT auto. Still crazy how much car you're getting for under 35k an with a few minor upgrades it's gonna be hard to stop.
What do you mean when the Dodge SRT4 came out it was $1995 and would probably spank both those cars or give um a run for the money 13.6 at 99mph with a good driver and to a bad driver at 14.0 1/4 mile time. They want us to pay for garbage what a joke

@@SamCarLegion yes but one has 6 gears the other one has 8 and is automatic, the automatic is obviously easier for the driver side, at the drag strip with the DCT would you use paddle shifters?
Both great cars. At 3:00 though, that reaction time is long enough to honestly cut the whole race. Not much learned there. I initially thought maybe it was the car's throttle response but you can still see the brake lights on so it's driver error. Loved hondas forever but the Elantra is out for blood in this segment.
Kind of tough to compare based on this vid because the Type R got a head start first race but then made a sandwich on the 1-2 shift at 4:27 (you can watch the palpable loss of acceleration the R had on the way to second at 3:57). Then the first roll seems solid but the second the Type R really got the jump at 6:23. So it's like combine that with the whole NGS button and launching business, and it seems like a race would be better had between drivers with a little more seat time in each car. But I guess that also kind of represents the real world if you encounter one another on the streets (of Mexico haha). Electronics are finicky to manage, shifts get f'd up, pacing get jumped, you kick yourself for riding the rev limiter, etc. Would love to see an on-track comparison and also how these cars times will compare at autocross this summer (I think they are in the same class to boot). My friend with an Elantra N tells me it loves to playfully oversteer and is a handful, but a good handful when the back end likes to slide a bit and it's practically yelling at you to mash the throttle! My R stays delightfully neutral even when the laws of physics say it shouldn't.
@@sidelingscroll Yes, I think it's safe to say our buddy Sam (is that his name?) can't drive very well. Those brake lights at 3:00 when the CTR is already gone is hilarious. And the missed shifts, oh man.. Yikes. Sammy had a bad day.
And this is only in a straight line. Take into consideration the Type R performance around the track and we can see why it is the benchmark to beat overall in this segment. The engineering of the car is impressive.

To be fair first race the Type-R looks to have the jump and the N bogged really hard. Second race it looks like it is closer on the start but the Type-R had a little shift issue from first to second unless the N is just faster there due to the DCT. On the 30MPH roll, not surprised looked good on launch of both with the Type-R starting to go. The 60MPH roll well, I think Sam upshifted too soon and really flattened out the launch for the N. I would like to see another 60 roll with a driver change. I think it would be similar to the 30 roll with the Type-R having a car length lead at the end. But for the extra 12k in price difference, you can get some really nice mods on the N that I think would make a bigger difference then on the Type-R. The issue I have is in the Type-R price range, your looking at a Golf-R or a Audi S3. And the 2022 Golf R eats all of there lunch at that price point. The N wins it for me at a lower price point, better warranty. I can put that 12k into mods down the road and the sounds from the N well it just has more fun factor then the Type-R. This also coming from a Honda owner.
You must be from USA? When CTR was still available to buy the price difference was only like $6k up here (Canada) Golf R was even cheaper than ctr. So I think Elantra N is way overpriced up here compared to USA for some reason.

60mph roll: the Elantra was probably spinning at 3k rpm cuz it sounded like it took a long time to rev up which means it wasn’t in the power-band. While the type r looked like it jumped just a little and was probably already spinning at 5k rpm. So it was already in the power-band which is why the type r was so far ahead. But as you said the result would have been the same as the 30mph if everything was done right.
@Bry Zeer that's the point. Compare manual to manual, auto to auto. When the trans are different its just another variable. Also dcts are automatics, no need for "auto". There's a reason some sports cars only come stick. Kinda wish the veloster n didn't get an automatic if they had the elantra n in the pipeline
@Bry Zeer it's a super car. Sports cars would be like a miata to a supra. In this case, the supra has an automatic. Or the hot hatches that mostly came in stick only, think sti, Evo, focus rs. Or dedicated sports cars like the s2000 which is only available as stick. There are sporty and great performing vehicles with automatics, and there are less than great automatics. You'd be hard pressed to tell me a charger scatpack (which shares the transmission with the supra) is a 4000 lb sports car.
@Bry Zeer bro Google something. No one calls dct cars dct. They are called automatic. Look up that gtr that you bring up "6-speed automatic". There's nothing wrong with an automatic like you make it seem but a 911 is hardly a sports car nowadays either. The cars you talk about being "sports cars" are not meant to be over 100k. A mustang gt? Sports car. A gt500? Not a sports car. Golf gti? Not a sports car, it's a hot hatch. Idk why you think sports car means fast? Miata and brz are not fast but are the pinnacle of daily driver sports cars. Porsche 718 is a sports car In manual or auto. If you can't drive stick that's fine, but it's not an excuse to classify whatever you want as a sports car
@Bry Zeer civic sis are not much faster than a stock civic anyways. But I'd call a civic si a sports call 10/10 times over a r35 gtr or new nsx since those are supercars (luxury and performance focused)
Both FWD asian sports sedans made by companies that start with the letter H. Finally, a video that I've been waiting for. Thank you, Sam! Bravo! Another great video and great match-up between the Elantra N vs the Civic Type-R. Amazing results. I can see you having trouble with the initial launch of the Elantra N.... Hyundai designed its own DCT and it does not like hard launch of its transmission. Probably to maintain its longevity/reliability. Also, when driving in a straight line, no need to do a manual shift on a DCT. Regardless, great job on the friendly matchup. For under $35k, the Hyundai Elantra N is a lot of car for the money. Respect to the Civic Type-R... a legend and great car.

Automatic vs manual. Also finally like seeing the different rolls. More power prefers a faster roll

@@Ace-oz9pc because on the street you smoke them on traffic lights lol. But I agreed.
@@Ace-oz9pc What people dont understand is that once you start making real power FWD is useless. Even with the most complex LSD systems. Traction is everything I would say anything >300 whp.
Also, people don't understand how much a role that suspension plays in traction as well. Weight transfer is everything (balance)
@@keving5286 yup! My buddy knows whenever we cruise and I get a chance to launch my Golf R against him from a light I’m grinning lol. Its only when we enter a highway or freeway (for you Americans) it turns out to be a different story. Nonetheless I’d pick my Golf R over the Type R just cause….
@@Ace-oz9pc agree to disagree 🤷🏽♂️ I live for that 0-60
On Run 2, did the Elantra N driver use the NGS button -- it doesn't look like it. Also, at launch, was traction control turned off and was high RPM rev around 2300?
Yes he did
@@SamCarLegion Thanks for confirming, Sam! For the Roll 3.... it looks like the NGS button was activated prior to launch?? Per Hyundai, NGS is suppose to be activated when in motion and not prior to launch.
N mode sets traction to 'ESC Sport' and launch RPM range can only be between 2500 and 3500 - in this case it was set to 2500.
@@n2productions Yes, I forgot the N mode was activated. Thanks for the clarification!
Solid win for the Type R, and the next generation is coming in just a couple months.
Thank you for doing 100kmh/60mph rolls its a much more reliable speed to race at to avoid gearing slowing the car down (especially when you learn how to put it in the right gear)
The first and fourth run should be done over. On the fourth run (100 kmh roll) you can see the Type R driver floor it at least 1 car length before the orange marker, and the Elantra sounded like it was in too high of a gear, with a slightly later reaction time.
Nice to see the Type R still hanging tough with the new kids on the block.
A track car vs a display of bravery/ a hail merry/ it's the last days of gas cars / lets throw everything at it to a price point car.
I bought my first Honda after they became official PU suppliers for Red Bull. Since then I m enjoying my Civic hatch and always wanted to buy the Type R but due to lack of transmission choices, never was. Looks like Honda is gonna be lazy with next gen as well. So Elantra N with a DCT it will be, I’ll just slap on some HRC stickers on the back window just like Red Bull did on their cars after Honda’s exit from the sport 😄🤷🏽♂️
P.S. Well done Sam, I wanted to see this comparison since this N was launched. So thank you and looks like I have found an another RBR fan 😄
Learn how yo drive manual lol
Yea max verstappen had a hell of a season too last year beating the one reigning champion Lewis and the redbull honda taking the title win from Mercedes
Honda's lazy because you want the car to shift for you? Lol.
U can learn how to drive a manual . It’s more fun because you learn the engine better , aren’t relying on programming that people complain . A lot of people who drive manual can tell the sped and rpm without looking at the speedometer .
The Type R has auto rev match. You don't realize how easy it is to drive manual with that feature. Defintely wouldn't consider Honda lazy, mate. Does 3 pedals confuse you???
The first launch was a gift to Honda ... I would say study the potential of the cars before testing and publishing them.
the second launch went well.
the launch from 100km / h, certainly done with the hyundai under torque or with a high gear.
Did they not even use N mode for the exhaust clip? Sounds like normal mode. Also, the answer to how the MT does against the type R, the answer is: Worse.
Yeah, unfortunately it looks like the 'Normal' mode exhaust clip was used. We recorded N mode as well, but I guess brevity was an editing consideration lol
@@n2productions Listening to the video, it sounds like normal mode was used, I didn't hear any of the N's signature pops, nor did the exhaust really have the aggressiveness that N mode usually gives it. It's obviously a video and won't sound like it does in person, but it just didn't sound right.
@@g0d182 What do you even mean by that?
I've heard the type r is a very hard car to launch but on the track is a completely different beast
Yes I own a 21’ CTR, and holy fuck it’s horrible. You spin first and 2nd gear and won’t hook till 3rd and you can’t just dump n go you have to not throttle the gas all the way you just have to now to not make the car bounce
This was a win/win for the Elentra N. There’s like 6k+ price different and the type R is the Pinnacle of Honda performance ware the N is multiple model sharing the same performance.
I’d love to see the N division of Hyundai new “N+” models in the same price bracket as Golf Rs, and Type Rs just see what craziness they would bring.
The type R simply won because of that massive weight difference, manual or auto wouldn’t make to much of a difference other then the dig and even that would be small.
dude type r is MANUAL haha
You have to realize that the type r wasn't built for straight lines either. For it to be able to compete as well as it does in a straight line is impressive. It's the current record holder at the Nurburgring for FWD cars
Can you imagine a type r and the Elentra N on the Nurburgrind? I wonder who will be reading the bumper stickers😆😆😆
Pinnacle of Honda performance?
NSX- hold my 🍺
@@SasquatchS550 the n wasn't built for numbers either it's built for fun
The only thing I like about the a N is the exhaust and the noise.
Yea if that DCT in the Elantra is anything like the one in my wife's Forte GT it's really hard to get a good launch out of it. Smooth shifting once you're going but very sluggish from the get go.
Completely different units
Different units.
Your Forte has a dry 7 speed DCT.
The one in the Elantra N is a wet 8 speed DCT.
There's a fix for the dsg/dct "lul" is to smash the gas pedal.
What's everyone's opinion of the forte gt? I'm curious
@@j.t.553 Talked about it in another comment but my wife's only complaint is that the DCT doesn't have a smooth power delivery at all when you're on/off the throttle. Basically feels like the car is always stuck in sport mode with sharp/snappy shifts. You won't win any races in it but it's not a slouch by any means. 6 speed may be the best way to go
Coming from a Honda Civic Sport 2019, I was looking to upgrade and my options were the type r or elentra n and I went with the N simply due to the price point with the crazy mark ups. MSRP 22 type r going for 58k while elentra n is 42k (Canadian).. 15k difference but you guy a car thats underrated at 286hp its def pushing 310-320 to the crank (there videos of stock N being dyno'd pushing 282 whp) with 15-20k you can do alot and still have lots of fun. Had my N for about two weeks and its amazing , exhaust sounds awesome, already got a few runs and safe to to say bang for buck you wont find a car at this price with this much power, let alone the customization options are amazing. Im a huge honda fan and always have and will be but hyundai is up coming, along with the 5 year engine/turbo warranty its safe to say im happy with my choice. Also love that it comes with manual and dct.. If type r came in dct it would be really interesting on a dig with the gulf..
Type R and Elentra N are the leaders for FWD technology.
If that track was longer, the R will catch up to the N in a dig... Great race
Im not a huge fan of the hyindais design but i love the accents and upgrades. For the price to have a affordable practical fun car to drive with almost 300hp i like it
There u go: the N offers near Type R performance for less than a GTI with adaptive dampers. Best performance value in the biz!
In a straight line. But how would it hold up against the type R in the twisty roads? That's really what the type R is made for. Not drag racing.
@@MrJjburgess11 Well I'll tell you: my VN keeps up with Type R's and M2's at my local track just fine. Off course they are faster, but not as much as the price difference would suggest
It got gapped multiple cars on the roll... Where is the same performance
@@Sie84yv the price difference really isn't that much. The problem is the dealer market ups For the type R are ridiculous. Msrp. On both cars is only a 5 grand difference.
@@MrJjburgess11 in canada they're is literally a $10 000 difference. EN all the way
my dad has an elantra n and they are fricking awesome (we just launched it today, best expriance ever)
I want to see Elantra N vs Accord 2.0 🔥🔥🔥
Why would you wanna see your accord lose
Elantra N did super well👌...for being 200lb heavier and less hp!!! Well done
Stock v stock N wins if type R driver is bad. But if driver is good R beats it.
Yep! Yep! Nope! And Nope!
🔔To properly use launch control on the N put the car into N mode and set traction to sport+, then activate launch control on the screen and hold down your break. While holding the break slam on the gas causing launch control to activate its self and then just release the break and enjoy!🔔
With that top end power, it seems like the race is already finished while the R is just getting to started 😎
Lol no the Elantra top end is definitely lackluster, makes the type r look good
@@Badmon.Bryann type r is better top end
@@EndritBajramiEshte21 no shit goofball, but only cause the Elantra slow asf lol
@@Badmon.Bryann bro for a sedan the elantra is very fast. 4.9 0-60 is quick as fuck for a 35 grand car
Raymond its not that much of a difference. The tuning is the difference here. Its also a sedan vs a hatchback. The sedan weighs more. The elantra Ns engine has a 5 mm bigger turbo than the veloster N and tuning has the elantra N at 355 whp tuned with 93 octane. Hyundai has tuned the car conservatively. I guess they didn't want to step on the 2.5Ts toes.
REALLY hoping you can repeat this race when the new Civic Type R becomes available 😄
Hello Sam, thanks for your videos and since you have the possibility of being able to face these cars, I would ask you to face the Hyundai Elantra N vs the Kia K5 GT in a drag race the next time, since they basically have the same engine, the same front-wheel drive and a very similar power, it will be very good to see these two cars from the great Korean manufacturers compete.....greetings!!!
This is the one video I wanted to watch first before reading comments. Didn’t want to spoil the results!
Both great for design, power, and technology in my opinion. Thanks for the video, Sam.
Thank you Honda for giving the world the FK8. Oh, what joy you have given to the everyday drivers. 😁😁
Both are good cars that have styling I cannot live with. I’m sure there are loads of people that like the way these cars look but not for me
I agree completely. I love both companies and both are great cars, but they both look terrible to me lol. Now the Veloster N.......that thing looks awesome, would wayyyyy rather have that over the Elantra N! Though either would be better than my rather subdued basic 2013 Elantra GT lol (still like it, has good styling and is comfortable)
@@NiirTheRaccoon I had a sense that the Elantra GT was a good car but hadn’t driven one. The veloster n struck me as less than the sum of its parts so I bought a civic si. I like understated, though for some it may be too conservatively styled
@@stms4411 Understandable, I am just not a fan of Honda's newest styling really, and some of Hyundai's is not great either. I just think the Veloster N would be perfect for me haha. I will never have one though lol
@@NiirTheRaccoon you never know!
You should try a Forte GT 6MT with a racechip. The chip adds 50hp and 50torque. Roughly. Really wakes up the car. And it looks fairly subtle and tame. I suspect traction might be a problem though, as it's lacking a diff.
N sounds better and is probably more comfortable.
I love the look/performance of both, if I had to chose between the two I’d go type R though
Agreed
Type r is $50k elantra n is $32k
I would like to add that I cant wait to see the results of the manual vs manual.
When a Honda loses in a drag race it's the driver's fault. But when it wins, it's the car that did all the work and the driver is not credited. 😆
Always 😂😂
@@SamCarLegion That's the Honda army men! You've got to be kind with them, cause lately, every time Sam doing a race with a Honda, it loose.......
Gotta love ol mate SAM.. He hits the NGS button and then talks for 25 seconds whilst the timer expires then takes off.

Elantra N vs Kia K5 GT !!!
Just check for msrp of both:
msrp for the Elantra N is 39 500$
Civic type R, and this is the 2021 cause their is no 2022 and the new will be 2023, and since the SI msrp is 33 100$ the new type R should be near 50 000$ ( 2021 msrp model were 46 500) All this
in Canadien dollars of course. So the clear winer on acceleration is the N, plus the power/ fun ratio is just unbeetable...

@@SamCarLegion That's too bad!
The "yeah buddy" instantly made me thing of Ronnie Coleman lol
The civic is so nice but i would never trade my veloster n for it
The N is equal or even a bit faster. I honestly feel the N needs better drivers lol. When racing straight line there is no reason to shift the car yourself.. Just launch control and go.. As far as the roll races. Drop the N down into 2nd (30 roll) and 3rd (60 roll) and just floor it and have the car do the rest of shifting. The manual N won't be faster than the dct N either.
