Testing LS Intakes! Which LS3 Intake Makes the Most Power? [Can Stock Keep Up?]

  • We hit the dyno hard with Prestige Motorsports (www.prestigemoto.com) as they test three very different intake manifold designs (FAST LSX R, FAST LSX HR and Holley Hi-Ram) against the stock LS3 intake -- which is already very good -- to see how they perform. Plus, as if that wasn't enough, we also had to throw in one of Holley's 102 millimeter Sniper throttle bodies into the mix. It is horsepower everywhere!

    Thank you for this test . I was planning to go with bigger intake then what I have now which is the MSD 102. I think it's almost the same one of the Fast small intake which is the best mod of the street dually driving also good for the natural aspirated engine with no boost

    Gwatney Performance and Hot Rod have done the same dyno tests (except Gwatney used a ported LS3 intake). Gwatney saw the same gains when going to the 102mm TB vs the 92mm on the FAST, but commented that in their experience those gains don't transfer over to the chassis dyno due to the design restrictions of the intake plumbing leading up to the TB.

    • @huntermckinley593

      I could see that for sure. My tbss has a 3" intake right now and 90mm tb so when I do go with a fast 102 and 102mm tb I'll be building or buying a 4" intake with ls7 maf because otherwise it's a waste of money buying the bigger throttle body. One thing I retained from college is air/fluid/electricity will only flow as much as the smallest diameter in the system. You can have 10 miles of 4 inch pipe and 1 inch of 3" and it'll only flow what that 3" can flow

    I'm trying to imagine building a big cube motor like that with all that camshaft (which undoubtedly needs more split) and then saddling it with abysmal sub 8:1 dynamic compression. Imagine how much more responsive and driveable that would be if it gained a little LSA, added 10* of exhaust duration, and slide the static compression up into at least the mid 12.x:1 range.
    Guessing we got a combination built for something else, and just got pulled into some NA testing.

      I'm basically using a HD stock replacement head on my sleeved 427ci engine and gain 50hp stock to stock...LS3 vs LS7...why on earth would you go to 441 and not run a monster raised runner say MAST Black label LS7 head which would make big power with more compression on this.....most of the big shops move over as soon as you go 4.125 bore plus....
      Nothing wrong with LS3 top end but this engine is obviously not worried about a little extra money....

  • @vortecturbo
    @vortecturbo Год назад

    Two things that was a poor camshaft design for the setup those heads look very promising and it had very little compression for that big of a cubic inch now mind you if that's set up would have been 12 to 1:00 which would have ran on 93 not optimal but would have ran on 93 and a camshaft along the lines of 258 on a 113 plus 3 268 or 272 at 50 on the exhaust side all of those intake manifolds would have done better but the Holly High Ram as well as the fast High Ram would have shined a lot better and had a lot more torque in the mid-range

    Shows that the stock Ls3 heads can make as much power as a ls7 with after market parts, big cubes, low compression and freak cam with a tiny split for high rpm. Not something I would build though. A good heads cam with 12 to1 compression on 93 octane 416Ci would have been a much more common street/track build.

      @A Phil I had WCCH Stage 2 or 2.5 LS3 heads. Upgrading from those heads and intake, your displacement bump and cam, swap from that 3600 to a higher stall. The Fast intake does really well sent to Tony Mamo to be ported, especially on that many CI. I think Greg Good is the go-to guy for the Dart Pro 1 heads. At least he was when I had them on an 8.8 CR 408ci Va Speed spec 236/236 .632 114LSA cam for a turbo 4th Gen Camaro. Are you going to run the motor on E85 or just 91 or 93 octane? • @custommotor
    @custommotor 3 года назад

    Since this is on a engine dyno and not in a car. Why not start at a lower rpm? Like off idle? Most cars live between 1-4K RPM and we never see how they perform down low.

    • @MrDerekRobinson
      @MrDerekRobinson 2 года назад

      Because no one actually builds stroker motors to be heavily interested in the way a car performs between 1 to 4k rpms like they're trying to save on gas mileage for manifold choice selecting purposes as they do based on mid to high rpm power when choosing. Living in 1 to 4k rpm is also driving in multiple gears which the power output would vary by which gear based on current desired speed and won't be much worth the comparison at 1k to 2k rpms. A range that is over in matter of milliseconds. That would basically multiply the time it takes to test all these intakes and no one lives in 4th gear for dyno sake from idle at full throttle in a muscle car for study sake when these intakes have a very specific operating rpm efficiency range starting from 3k rpm and up.

    So no test with the bigger injectors and throttle body on the stock intake? Not a complete test! Looks like comparing apples with oranges for some of the manifolds.

    • @TheHorsepowerMonster
      @TheHorsepowerMonster  3 года назад +1

      Not really. The bigger injectors would not have helped much with the stock manifold. The stock injectors weren't at full capacity yet, we just upgraded because we knew that the aftermarket intakes could flow more air. Bigger injectors may have changed the curve some but wouldn't have made a big change. Likewise, the Holley Sniper throttle body wouldn't have helped on the stock intake because the opening is only 90 millimeters in diameter. Putting a bigger throttle body wouldn't have helped because the throat on the intake manifold is the choke point. Not even sure if it has enough material to allow you to port the intake large enough to accept the Sniper throttle body. Thanks for watching.

      The injector wasn't at all limiting the power of the LS3 intake but it most likely would have limited power on the better intakes if they didn't replace them.

    • @TheHorsepowerMonster

      There isn't really a point to that. The bottleneck is the throat of the intake manifold, so adding a larger throttle body won't help make power.

    I have to mention…. Great test, love intake comparison tests… BUT…. You’re over caming the engine and are loosing power everywhere except maybe peek RPM. The intake and exhaust duration is to high, not a good cam choice for the stock LS3 intake or any long runner intake. A 440 ci LS Stroker engine should be using a cam 234-238 intake @ 50 and a exhaust duration at about 246@ 50 with a 110-112 LSA . I believe you will make more power and torque with all the intake manifolds being tested throughout the power band.
    I know what I’m talking about from experience.😏

"Nothing to fancy or out of the ordinary which is exactly what a lot of guys are running both on the street and at the track". We defiantly have a different idea about what constitutes "out of the ordinary" and "a lot". I don't know anybody who has that kind of engine, let alone runs it on the street. I understand using an engine which moves a lot of air to stress the intakes, but you would have to be pretty out of touch to try passing that off as anything close to common.

    You already stated that it was unfair test I mean you changed injectors on the stock intake manifold from the fast which pulse with has a lot to do with Flo so you could have picked up some power there and you could have seen if the larger throttle body would have been proved flo all equaling two more power not really a fair test but I see you trying to sell your engine builders vs true test

    • @TheHorsepowerMonster
      @TheHorsepowerMonster  3 года назад

      How many people upgrade their fuel injectors on a stock intake? What's the point of testing it if nobody is going to do it? And likewise, if the higher flowing intake calls for more injector, it makes no sense to choke it off with the stock injectors. When I said it was an unfair test, I was only saying that the two high ram style intakes perform best with some form of forced induction.

      The biggest injectors in the world would not have gotten anymore power out of the LS3 intake...... but yes there probably would have been a few ponies to be had by putting the larger throttle body on the LS3 intake but it would not change the results as it still would have finished last.

      Engines are a system. With the stock manifold, the injectors were at just over 90% duty cycle. Enough to make sure we got the most ourt of the stock intake manifold. But we knew the aftermarket manifolds would be able to pull more air into the engine. So if we left the stock injectors in and max'ed them out on the duty cycle, we'd get an artificially low number for the intake performance. Since they are capable of more, they needed more injector. If you left the same injectors in them, you get the result that the aftermarket intakes really aren't any better than stock, when that's not true. Same with the throttle bodies. The stock throttle body is properly sized for the stock intake, so that delivered it's best performance. Some of the aftermarket intakes had a larger throat, so we installed a throttle body that matched it.
