Thank you for this test. This is almost identical to my Silverado. I just can't justify the money for a intake manifold. However who doesn't love the look of a aftermarket manifold.
Same takeaway I came up with. For a street rod or street truck application you will rarely see over 4500RPM anyway. In this test there was virtually no difference in HP or torque clear to 5,000. That $1,000+ will go a long way in other areas of your project build. Just my opinion and as always YMMV.
My takeaway from the test is that you really have to be honest with yourself about how often you’re going to be above 5000 rpm. For vehicles that see 90% street time, I would argue it’s not worth it. Of course if you’re racing, the FAST is the way to go.
in this case, it's more a case that the stock intake/tb just isn't a huge restriction on the small 5.3. But it is equally impressive that the FAST intake loses nothing at the low end, so it is a win win for those who are seeking to grow further down the line
Even w/my 04 Z06 and 6 speed used as a toy.. I really don't go full throttle over 5500 rpms all that often. It's gotta be like less than 1% of the time. ANd due to traction.. its only in 2nd and 3rd gear when on the street.
People spend more than $1k on wheels alone, that's nothing compared to a $1k intake upgrade thay actually offers performance.
@@sepg5084 ya-but... that performance is only seen a few times. That is... unless your like I was when I was 16yrs old 😆
My 03 Silverado sees over 5k very often lol
Don't forget the Fast just looks nicer as well so more power, better looks and more room to grow made it worth while to me. I was guessing about 20 HP on my 5.3 with a cam.
So a modified 5.3L, $1,000 intake, $514 for throttle body, $398 for cam & lifters, you gain HP & torque = $633 per 3 hp, 42 lbs ft torque is very small gain! Got it.
My 1,510 house is valued at $440.000 which includes a 10 X 12' shed is covered for $44,000. Makes sense to me to pay $428 per month on homeowners even though it hasn't grown larger! Since 92.
Excise me while I throw up..
$2000 + for 30 hp just turbo it . Love your work . Thank you saves people tons of money and work .
Is it $2000 I thought he said it was $1000 which is about what I have seen
1200 for the intake all new gaskets tuning and all the extras to add the intake
Idk bout that, with the turbo gonna need more gas going through injectors from forced induction so would need bigger injectors which 80lb injectors are already $1k+ plus however much the turbo setup is. Typically the stock intake doesn’t perform near aswell under boost as the 102mm lsxr intake due to stock fuel rail and injectors and not enough air to breath, the acceleration on a forced induction engine with the stock intake compared to the 102mm lsxr and some even put another 102mm throttle body spacer on is like walking and riding a bike. In the end huge difference if you go all out compared to cheap.
Literally just went full bore heads, cams, 102mm intake could weeks back. Looks like it was a good choice. Thanks for the test and all your hard work man!
Multiple cam LS? Interesting
Cams lol
It's too bad the price of the Dorman LS2 skyrocketed. If I recall correctly, it made damn good power, not quite what the FAST makes, but close enough considering the cost, at the time anyway. Now they're almost as expensive as this intake if you can even find one.
if you've got this engine in a truck you would be better off going with a NBSS/TBSS intake, much cheaper than the dorman LS2 and makes the same power. In fact there's really no point in even considering the Dorman anymore since the price is over a grand now..if you're spending that much you might as well spend the extra couple hundred and buy the significantly better FAST 102.
Damn. I could make money on my dorman. I bought one early on. Think I paid under $300. Anything more than that is a ripoff. It’s really a piece of shit.

The faces you make bruh,. LMAO.. #priceless ! Merry Christmas to you and yours Rich.
You are the man brother.... God bless for all that you do for your community... Love all your videos...
I appreciate that
TBSS intake would have been an interesting comparison.
Eeexxxaaactly what I was thinking
He has done that already in another video
The 2007-14 NBS truck manifold is the same as the TBSS manifold.
And then port the TBSS
You mean Gen 4 Truck Intake
I wouldn't spend the money on the TB, Intake, and Fuel rails until you already maximized your combo with cam, valve springs, converters, gears, tune. Doing this intake/tb/fuel rail on a mostly stock setup that maybe only has headers and a y-pipe this would be money well spent elsewhere and you'd get gapped by a cammed truck or one with a higher stall converter. This would be a good upgrade if you already have the other stuff and just want a little more out of your combo, but I'd probably get a set of ported heads and swap it all on at the same time. Also, can get good gains from a TBSS / later model truck intake swap and you can find those in a junkyard and get it for under $100 if you can find one and remove it yourself.
A grand for gains only over 5150? Yeah, nah. Not for a daily.
Thanks again Richard. Giving us the best info in where to spend our hard earned monies.
Yet another great comparison video. I believe this video is another example to show where to spend your money based on your end result of the combination you want to do.
I cut the mounting tabs off of a stock truck fuel rail and made some brackets to hold the rails down, LS7 injectors with spacers.
I've got a 5.3 in my 84 camaro. The stock truck intake doesn't fit well under the stock hood.
This intake fits great, also the power gain doesn't hurt. Since this is a track car, the high rpms are where it likes to live
Or where U make it live i dought it Likes it lol
Thanks to you Richard I don't have to invest my money into an intake I will keep my stock I heard you saying one of your videos you didn't know how deep lake Tahoe 1,644ft
👍
I did a tbss intake for less than 100. Not as good as the fast but its still an upgrade over the gen 3. Think thats the value play. If you need the best of the best then fast is your manifold.
I love all your videos on all vehicle platforms
Seems like this manifold would be better spent on a 6.0 or a 5.3 punched out too a 5.7 where there would be a bigger requirement for more air volume and flow, a tbss is still the best manifold for a 5.3, considering that you can get ls1 pistons from summit racing for 800 bucks Canadian your money is way better spent increasing your displacement and getting the manifold later
Great test... This shows it'll shine up top and not kill street manners. And if it's not going to live in the upper RPMs, then it's not necessary...
That's where a good TBSS intake would shine great at.
This intake would definitely be great on a bigger motor with good flowing heads as well. But then you get to the point of, when do you just go turbo and keep it more budget friendly. 😁
The fast manifold at $1000 is $41.66/hp for 24hp. Nitrous is about $350-500 for 125/200hp. I don’t have the budget for the fast. I’ve just recently started welding so I can make my own aluminized mild steel turbo kit. I drive a truck with cam, springs, and long tube headers on e85.
no need for fast with boost
I say a LS 3 style manifold has major benefits if you want to keep your old hood in some of the lower profile hoods
THE LS3 INTAKE WORKS WELL ON REC PORT HEADS
make a video about the 300-500 dollar intakes on Ebay and JEGS
Truck intake < TBSS (NNBS) intake < LSXRT
Truck intake will be good for most people. LSXRT is for people pushing the limits of their build. TBSS will increase power across the room range and increase the efficiency of the mods that were already completed and give you most of the gains from the LSXRT without the cost.
TESTED ALL OF THEM MANY TIMES
For the money you can get springs and a cam. Might even be able to still get lifters and more
Also never shown on a dyno graph is Looks and Hood clerance . But the dorman Ls6 does that . If it ever goes back into mass production .
I kind of had an idea where this was going to go because my son swapped out the truck manifold for a fast manifold and the results are very similar. One thing I believe I noticed, or maybe it was in my head, but did anyone else seem to observe the fast manifold and larger throttle body made it louder? Perhaps it was just me or varying placement of the microphone or did I observe the setup becoming louder with the fast? No big deal either way as most people really don't mind a little bit of extra noise if the performance is increased as advertised. Thanks for the test Richard!
change in mic placement and volume during editing
Always a good dyno day when you see Richards Grrrr face
Scary face
I would have liked to have seen the tbss/gen iv intake thrown in to the mix. I considered a lsxrt intake, but you can pick up an lh6 out of a trailblazer cheap with a bad cam, and you get a set of 799 heads, tbss intake, and resell the aluminum 5.3l short block to get most of your money back making the heads and intake almost free.
That test like that exists on his channel, although it's from a few years ago and on a 6.0. ruclips.net/video/a2M10LiwE7Q/видео.html&ab_channel=RichardHoldener
@@wheelbasemedia5814 I've seen that test, but as you pointed out, that was a 6.0l, and one that is more heavily modded than most go. It would have been nice to have seen the tbss thrown in to the mix on a cam only 5.3l like so many like myself are doing.
Thanks for the time and effort you put on these videos for is boss appreciate it.
Blaster! Since 1957. Master Blaster since July 1985

My take away is that again cfm demand has told the story, the Fast manifold was more efficient in letting the heads flow their potential with the given lift of the camshaft 👍

@@richardholdener1727 Is it essentially that same intake manifold? Same runner length? Just different TB locations to clear the belt drive in each application?
I agree with the others, it's not needed for that build. Your not racing cammed a truck on a track, and if a cammed 5.3L is going in your project car, a wet nitrous kit would be alot better hp/$ for the occasional drag racing.
I noticed when tb was open all the way @ 5:11 into video, @ 5:14 closes slightly, and stays there, have you noticed this, or does that cause variations/power loses?

Ever test the stock smaller throttle body on something like this or the TBSS just to see what happens? It would be nice to see if there is a loss of power between the two since it is expensive to go with an aftermarket throttle body or OBD Link adapter harness.
the stock tbss tb is dbw
@@richardholdener1727 I know. I meant that the 3 and 4 bolt throttle bodies aren't electrically interchangeable and require an X-Link to make them work. The DBC guys have to run an cheap adapter or an expensive aftermarket throttle body with known Idle issues. I am going to run the TBSS manifold on my 03 6.0 w/ DBW, and use the 3 to 4 bolt adapter. I am just curious if there is HP left on the table with the stock, smaller throttle body. Thanks for the reply.

I love watching your videos they make want to try new things on my Challenger. Richard I would love to see this test done with the gen 3 hemi and eagle heads running comps 201-428-17 cam to compare the Charger/ Challenger intake to the Holley intake.
Ever tried a edelbrock cross ram on one of these using the adapters? I know that manifold has done very well in all the testing I have seen of it. I wondered if the transitions of shape really hurt it that bad.

I have to go back to your old cathedral port intake manifold test and see how badly the TBSS manifold beats the gen 3 truck manifold... And then there's the topic of how much is the throttle body worth in this power range/how big of a TB can you fit on a TBSS manifold with a bit of porting, or a reasonable adapter..
I think the Gen 3 truck manifold was 78mm and the Gen 4 truck manifold 87mm. You can fit a ls2 or LS3/7 90mm (some say it's 92mm after porting) throttle body depending on what color blade you have silver blade 07-08 or gold blade 09-14
A lot of time and money just to get the Gen 4 intake to work on a Gen 3 truck.

Curious how the lsxr compares to the lsxrt under na applications and boosted applications.
tested many times-they are the same
Have a link to the cam?

Im looking to put this on my 2007-13 model silverado 4.8, but its not driven by wire throttle body. Can i still put the fast big mouth throttle body on it with no cable and would it work?
you would need a dbw throttle body -but I don't recommend the FAST on the smaller 4.8L, unless you have lots of mods
