    Thank you for this test. This is almost identical to my Silverado. I just can't justify the money for a intake manifold. However who doesn't love the look of a aftermarket manifold.

  • @BigHeinen

    Same takeaway I came up with. For a street rod or street truck application you will rarely see over 4500RPM anyway. In this test there was virtually no difference in HP or torque clear to 5,000. That $1,000+ will go a long way in other areas of your project build. Just my opinion and as always YMMV.

  • @jr78racer
    @jr78racer 2 года назад +59

    My takeaway from the test is that you really have to be honest with yourself about how often you’re going to be above 5000 rpm. For vehicles that see 90% street time, I would argue it’s not worth it. Of course if you’re racing, the FAST is the way to go.

    • @blow0me
      @blow0me 2 года назад +4

      in this case, it's more a case that the stock intake/tb just isn't a huge restriction on the small 5.3. But it is equally impressive that the FAST intake loses nothing at the low end, so it is a win win for those who are seeking to grow further down the line

    • @wydopnthrtl

      Even w/my 04 Z06 and 6 speed used as a toy.. I really don't go full throttle over 5500 rpms all that often. It's gotta be like less than 1% of the time. ANd due to traction.. its only in 2nd and 3rd gear when on the street.

    So a modified 5.3L, $1,000 intake, $514 for throttle body, $398 for cam & lifters, you gain HP & torque = $633 per 3 hp, 42 lbs ft torque is very small gain! Got it.
    My 1,510 house is valued at $440.000 which includes a 10 X 12' shed is covered for $44,000. Makes sense to me to pay $428 per month on homeowners even though it hasn't grown larger! Since 92.

      Idk bout that, with the turbo gonna need more gas going through injectors from forced induction so would need bigger injectors which 80lb injectors are already $1k+ plus however much the turbo setup is. Typically the stock intake doesn’t perform near aswell under boost as the 102mm lsxr intake due to stock fuel rail and injectors and not enough air to breath, the acceleration on a forced induction engine with the stock intake compared to the 102mm lsxr and some even put another 102mm throttle body spacer on is like walking and riding a bike. In the end huge difference if you go all out compared to cheap.

    It's too bad the price of the Dorman LS2 skyrocketed. If I recall correctly, it made damn good power, not quite what the FAST makes, but close enough considering the cost, at the time anyway. Now they're almost as expensive as this intake if you can even find one.

    • @vans1107
      @vans1107 2 года назад +5

      if you've got this engine in a truck you would be better off going with a NBSS/TBSS intake, much cheaper than the dorman LS2 and makes the same power. In fact there's really no point in even considering the Dorman anymore since the price is over a grand now..if you're spending that much you might as well spend the extra couple hundred and buy the significantly better FAST 102.

    I wouldn't spend the money on the TB, Intake, and Fuel rails until you already maximized your combo with cam, valve springs, converters, gears, tune. Doing this intake/tb/fuel rail on a mostly stock setup that maybe only has headers and a y-pipe this would be money well spent elsewhere and you'd get gapped by a cammed truck or one with a higher stall converter. This would be a good upgrade if you already have the other stuff and just want a little more out of your combo, but I'd probably get a set of ported heads and swap it all on at the same time. Also, can get good gains from a TBSS / later model truck intake swap and you can find those in a junkyard and get it for under $100 if you can find one and remove it yourself.

    Great test... This shows it'll shine up top and not kill street manners. And if it's not going to live in the upper RPMs, then it's not necessary...
    That's where a good TBSS intake would shine great at.
    This intake would definitely be great on a bigger motor with good flowing heads as well. But then you get to the point of, when do you just go turbo and keep it more budget friendly. 😁

    Truck intake will be good for most people. LSXRT is for people pushing the limits of their build. TBSS will increase power across the room range and increase the efficiency of the mods that were already completed and give you most of the gains from the LSXRT without the cost.

    I kind of had an idea where this was going to go because my son swapped out the truck manifold for a fast manifold and the results are very similar. One thing I believe I noticed, or maybe it was in my head, but did anyone else seem to observe the fast manifold and larger throttle body made it louder? Perhaps it was just me or varying placement of the microphone or did I observe the setup becoming louder with the fast? No big deal either way as most people really don't mind a little bit of extra noise if the performance is increased as advertised. Thanks for the test Richard!
